Middle school bands successful at festival

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte Middle School Bands earned a Division I rating at the MSBOA District VIII Band and Orchestra Festival on March 18. Both the Seventh and Eighth Grade Band and Cadet Band I earned straight I’s for a final superior rating of a I. Seventh and Eighth Grade Band performed Lone Eagle March by John Edmondson, Rogue River Rhapsody by David Shaffer, and Etowah! by Brian Bal-

mages. Cadet Band I played Normandy Beach March by John Edmondson, The Rowen Tree by Randall Standridge, and Rhythms and Riffs by Brian Balmages. The adjudicators were Penny Daab-Cushway, retired from Big Rapids Middle School, David Fitts of Owosso, Ted Bazany, retired from Jenison High School, and Keith Hudson, retired from Greenville Public Schools. Some of the adjudicator’s comments were: “Group

plays with great control and balance, Very musical performance,” “a wonderful mature sound,” “great musicians and great teaching,” and “very strong playing across the band.” Mr. Gronda and Ms. Detgen would like to thank their students for their hard work toward excellence.
