‘Les Mis’ final joint show for MV, Lakewood By RACHEL GRECO rgreco@lsj.com

LAKEWOOD — Without each other’s help neither Lakewood or Maple Valley high schools could have pulled off “Les Misérables.” Next weekend the joint show will open at Lakewood High School — signifying the end to a two-year partnership between the district’s theater departments. With a cast of 65, that equally represents both schools, co-director Amanda Wells thinks it’s a sendoff worth enjoying. “We couldn’t have done ‘Les Misérables’ any other way,” said Wells, who works with the Lakewood musicals. But for the past two years Lakewood students wouldn’t have had theater shows without the help of Maple Valley. The school’s new auditorium was under construction. With no place

Wells, of the two schools. “This year in particular, it was the most talented cast I’ve ever worked with.” It also saved needed money. With one set to create and one group of costumes, instead of two, Wells said both districts spent less on the productions. The shows also drew in large crowds from both areas, up to 1,500 audience members one season, during performances. So why not continue joint musicals and plays? Wells pointed out that the new Lakewood auditorium is complete. She said in addition, teaming up did create scheduling and travel issues for cast and crew. “The savings for the district is one thing but the distance to travel for the students is a lot,” she explained.

Saying ‘thank you’

For now Wells said cast and crew are concentrating on their final joint show, which they began rehearsing for in January. Wells said the challenges associated

with “Les Misérables” have kept them busy. “We really didn’t want to deny anybody the opportunity to be on stage,” said Wells. In fact the cast was so talented that all eight leads are double cast — half from each school. That may be surprising when you consider that the entire show is presented in song. “The pit doesn’t ever stop playing,” she said. “That’s a huge challenge for these kids.” But not the only one. Set creation was also a challenge, with several pieces built to turn 360 degrees during the show. But cast and crew have been dedicated to “Les Misérables.” “We’ve had more volunteers for this show than ever,” said Wells. “Last Saturday I think we had 45 people these for the set build.” All told, it should be a good tribute, said Wells, to the work between Lakewood and Maple Valley. “So much good has come out of this partnership,” she said. “This is sort of a ‘thank you’ from Lakewood to Maple Valley.”

However, he said city officials have indicated they value that position. “It would only be in a desperate, last ditch effort that we would consider that,” said Guetschow. CHARLOTTE - Fern Persons Elementary School in Olivet is working hard to help its students -- and their families lead healthier lifestyles thanks to a $40,000 grant. The funding, a Building Healthy Communities Grant from Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Michigan, is being utilized along with help from Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital. The grant is good for the 2010-11 school year but school Principal Sarah Scott anticipates a longer relationship. “The grant has allowed us a renewed focus on childhood obesity and given us great tools to keep our kids moving.” Some of those tools include hands-on nutrition education, a run/walk, participation in community health events and using a Web-based physical education program called HOPSports.

Partnership

Through its partnership with Fern Persons, HGB has provided resources such as staff, educational materials and healthy snacks for a variety of presentations and events at the school and in the community. For example, Hayes Green Beach Dietitian Melanie Shehan has been assisting with the Taking Charge of Health component of the grant. In the fall, she hosted a healthy school snack table during Fern Person’s open house. Shehan also worked with kindergarten students to help them make three different healthy snacks. During fall parent-teacher conferences, she talked with families about healthy holiday eating. Fern Persons will be offering several health and well-

Potterville girls beat Bath, MV in districts By BILL McLEOD bmcleod@lsj.com POTTERVILLE - Potterville recorded two of their most memorable girls’ basketball victories in recent memory in the first two rounds of district play, defeating CMAC rival Bath, 42-35 on Feb. 28, and then advancing to the district championship game with a 66-44 win over Maple Valley on March 2. Junior Jessica Ritchey led the way in both games, including one of the best scoring nights in school history, 33 points, as the Vikings defeated Maple Valley 66-44 in the second roundon March 2. Ritchey scored 12 points and Morgan West added 11 to lead the Vikings to an upset win over the Bees, who finished second in the CMAC, and who had beaten the Vikings by 21 and 17 points in their two regularseason games. Potterville head coach Jay Harkness said that his team drew upon their previous experience against Bath for this win. “We’ve been building, we lost some close ones this year,” Harkness said. “We learned from our mistakes, we’ve learned from our losses. It was a fantastic gutty performance tonight.” Potterville led throughout most of the first half, but was never able to build more than a five-point lead. Bath (16-5) managed to take a one-point lead in the fourth quarter on a basket by Kate Garrity, who led the Bees with 12 points. Potterville closed out the big win from the free-throw line, scoring 10 points from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. “Our team was very wellprepared to win tonight,” West said. “It feels amazing, there are no words that can describe this.” West made five of six free throws in the fourth quarter, including one to tie the

Potterville’s Jenna Whipple fights to the basket during the Vikings’ 42-35 win over Bath in the first round of their Class C district tournament on Feb. 28. score at 33 with 2:38 left. “I felt very confident that I was going to hit them,” said West, who shoots about 50 free throws during each practice. The Vikings hit 17 of 24 from the free-throw line. Bath hit 4 of 10. “We struggled to hit shots everywhere on the floor,” Bath coach Craig Poppema said. “That happens, but the problem was defensively, we were slow on the help, we weren’t getting our feet positioned and giving them the chance to get chippy fouls. “When you are struggling offensively you have to create some offense by playing good defense. “You don’t want to lose in the district opener, give credit to Potterville, they did a nice job.” Ritchey’s 33-point game made the district semifinal win memorable, but Harkness said that her scoring didn’t tell the whole story. “I’ve never seen a player

score that much yet play so unselfish. It was a joy to watch,” he said. “She played an all-around great game. The whole team played a great game, and after that big win over Bath on Monday, I was happy to see that we didn’t have a let down against a tough Maple Valley team.” Mikaela Bromley led Maple Valley (2-19) with a teamhigh 18 points. With the win, Potterville improved to 9-13 for the season, and advanced to another tough CMAC rematch in the district championship game, against Laingsburg on March 4. That game was played after this paper went to press. The winner of that district final will begin regional play at Bath on Tuesday, March 8. Charlotte Shopping Guide sports writer Scott Yoahonis also contributed to this story.
