Arson caused fire, 5k reward offered on info Will Kangas and Kevin Grasha

DIMONDALE — A fire on May 17 that damaged the home of the Holt High School senior who faces prison time in connection with a fatal crash was intentionally set, officials said. The fire destroyed an early 1900s barn and attached garage that officials said was about eight feet from the Dimondale home where Brett Johnson, 17, lives with his mother and older brother. The exteriors of the home where Johnson lives and another house about 20 feet away from the two-story barn sustained severe damage from the heat, said William Fabijancic Jr., assistant chief for Windsor Township Emergency Services, one of four departments that responded to the morning blaze. Johnson’s mother’s car, which was inside the garage, also was destroyed. Everyone inside the homes escaped

safely and there were no injuries, Fabijancic said. Michigan State Police fire investigators have ruled the blaze arson. Specialist Sgt. Ken Hersha said Tuesday it was fortunate that Johnson’s mother woke up, heard the fire and called 911. “Even with her quick discovery of the fire,” Hersha said in an email, the house was close to becoming “fully engulfed in flames with the occupants inside.” Johnson, who is expected to graduate at the end of this school year, pleaded guilty last month to one count of driving while intoxicated causing the deaths of two fellow Holt seniors and a Holt graduate, officials said. In the early hours of Jan. 30, Johnson, who had alcohol and marijuana in his system, lost control of his car and struck a tree, killing three passengers in the car. He will be sentenced on June 8 in Ingham County Circuit Court by Judge See ARSON, Page 2

New county districts blasted by Delhi representatives Will Kangas

DELHI TWP. — Both of Holt’s representatives on the Ingham County Board of Commissioners say a recent redrawing of district boundaries has crossed the line of fair play — in more

ways than one. District 14 Commissioner Steve Dougan has called for Ingham County Clerk Mike Bryanton to resign and said the change is clearly “gerrymandering.” “This map is an affront to everyone who lives in

Delhi Township and everyone who lives in rural Ingham County,” Dougan said. “It’s a joke. Bryanton, Stuart Dunnings and Eric Schertzing should be ashamed of themselves.” The three were on a commission that voted May 23

to redraw district lines. Republican Chair Linda Lee Tarver was the lone vote against the plan, which passed 4-1. Democratic Party Chair Sandy Zerkle was also on the commission. Dougan said the map was one of three proposals

that changed boundaries for county commission representation. The changes came as a result of changes in population noted in the 2010 census. Delhi Township’s population has increased by 3,300 residents since 2000,

missioners will have to run against each other in the next election. Dougan, who represents the east portion of Delhi Township, also represents rural townships to the east and south through Dansville and Bunkerhill Township east of Mason. He said the new boundaries have a single purpose. “It’s clearly intended to further diminish the voice of rural and suburban Ingham County,” he said. Vince Dragonetti, who represents the west portion of Delhi Township and then rural land to the south, including Aurelius Township, questions why this was done. The new boundaries in his territory now include a portion of the south side of Lansing. “What socio-economic conditions make the people similar to those that live in the Jolly Road and Washington Avenue areas?” he asked. Dragonetti said the new district will be a combination of municipal lines

that are very different — from rural Ingham County to urban south Lansing. “This new commissioner will find there is no common make-up of people to serve,” he said. Dougan said he and Dragonetti will have to drive past each other’s houses to campaign in the new districts. The new map combines most of Delhi Township’s urban area into a new “District 7.” “I will stand on my front porch and look at houses that are denied the chance to vote for me again,” he said. But Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings, who proposed the approved plan, said it was the plan that most clearly

followed state law and that districts were as close as possible to being the same size, according to an article in the Lansing State Journal. Delhi Township Clerk Evan Hope said he knows the committee struggled with Delhi Township and even tried to use the current local precinct map to make changes. He said the township precinct map will be changing as well however, because of census figures. For example, Hope said the populous precinct 10 — the northeast portion of the township — may be split so that a shift would even out the township’s sparse voting turnout from its western most precinct.

“I haven’t examined the new county map enough yet to form an opinion as to its impact on Delhi Township,” Hope said. Dragonetti said it seemed Meridian Township was favored.

“Why is it they bent over backward to keep two commissioners in Meridian Township by slicing it in two but meandered all over the countryside in Delhi and the adjoining area?” he said.

HOLT — The 2011 version of the Holt Hometown Festival is scheduled to have all of the usual fun — and is expected to grow with a new open spirit, according to organizers. The festival, August 26-27, is “moving towards decentralizing” said Mark Jenks, Delhi Township Parks and Recreation manager and festival committee member. That means Holt area businesses and organizations can all get into the spirit by hosting their own special festival event to be included in the festivities. “We know the farmer’s market will be

having some music and a special day, meanwhile there will be a car show at the Tim Horton’s down the street,” he said. Jenks and committee chair Sharon Osborn said instead of focusing on one area, the festival will felt all over town. It’s part of a trend that started last year, when events like the festival entertainment tent were axed with the knowledge that local restaurants like Sammy’s and Buddies will have their own entertainment tents. The car show moved to the former L&L parking lot next to Tim Horton’s on S. Cedar as well. The Sam Corey senior center had its own ice cream social, Jenks said.

Would you like your son or daughter to learn the game of golf? The First Tees Target Outreach Program teaches children 7-17 years of age the game of golf in a fun and engaging environment! Summer sessions are available at 5 Lansing Area Locations! Scholarships are available for qualified applicants. “more than a game”

Sessions begin June 13th

Summer Session fees are $50

“If anyone or anyplace Holt wants to have an elevated day in the name of the Hometown Festival we welcome it,” he said. Vendors and children’s activities will still return to the grounds behind Sycamore Elementary school as always, he said. The fireworks and parade will return as well, even though the parade route may change slightly because of slated construction on Cedar Street this summer. “It’s more of an open feel,” he said. “There is going to be a big home football game Aug. 26 and I’ve had calls from several high school reunion committees on getting involved during that weekend.” The skate park will once again host a

bike and skate competition. The event has grown into its own since being introduced at the festival couple years ago. It’s an example of what is happening overall, Jenks said. “We manage what we can but for the most part all of these events are organizing themselves,” he said. He said last year’s attendance appeared to be up from the previous year based on vendor sales, but it would be to hard to calculate total crowds for all events. The festival costs operate by sponsorship. The only direct government funding for the event is through the township, which provides funds designated only for the fireworks show.

Pam was diagnosed with MS in 2001. Six years later, she was faced with a miserable life of depression, fatigue, pain and bladder issues. Fear of needing a feeding tube, being wheelchair bound if not eventually bedbound and she was on 10 prescription drugs and not one of them made the symptoms go away. In 2008, Pam was introduced to what is called cellular nutrition. It was then she discovered how very important diets affect our health. A startling statistic showed that about 85% of illnesses are diet related. Within 6 months of changing Pam’s dietary lifestyle, her symptoms began to fade away. She no longer spent the day in bed watching the world pass by her. The aches and pains subsided, the depression vanished. She was once again able to walk without falling down. She quit choking on her food. Life once again was worth living. – Pam Bullen FREE MS support groups that are not funded by any Originations

dale Junior Girl Scout Troop 271 collected 95 pounds of food and 150 items to donate for the Dimondale Food Pantry. In March, the troop visited the Mid-Michigan Food Pantry to learn about the food needs of our community and assemble emergency weekend food packets for kids in our area. After learning about hunger in our area, the girls of Troop 271 decided to do more. In April they planned a campaign at Dimondale Elementary School, met with the school principal and sent fliers home with their classmates. I sliced my life on my body every time I felt down, we stayed around I wanted to smile so I did it felt good to pretend I cover those marks because I’m always looking at my mistakes and I can’t help but slice away I bring someone back into my life-only for a moment I feel alright I want to smile, so I will, and it feels good to be fake but it’s real I hide my truths I don’t want to see my mistakes if I do I will have to slice away I numb the pain I just think of myself, I guess I’m vain I will sleep it away and it feels good to erase my mistakes It’s my fault to think they could change in a dream back to reality I’m gonna look at these mistakes and slice away

Quite a quilt

Why choose Lansing Ophthalmology?

Marilyn Washington of Lansing takes a close look at a quilt created by Kari Smith-Ruedisale of Grand Ledge. Kendra Cabrera, also of Lansing, also appreciated SmithRuedisale’s craftsmanship. The quilt was part of the Capital City Quilt Guild’s biannual quilt show held May 21-22 at the Summit in Dimondale. More than 400 quilts were on display during the show. SUE LOUNDS/LCN

Holt soccer loses cup

13 Holt Community News

HOLT — A lone goal midway through the second half proved to be the difference, as the Holt Varsity girls soccer team fell to Williamston in the first round of the CAAC Gold Cup last week. The game was dominated by strong defense and goaltending. Holt was in charge for much of the first half, but the game remained scoreless thanks to several diving saves by the Williamston goaltender. Holt goaltender Kori Ramirez responded with several strong saves of her own in the second half, before a loose ball in front of the net was tapped in by Williamston at the 25.19 mark. The loss sent Holt to the consolation game against East Lansing where, after falling behind 3-1, the Rams rallied to tie the game, sending it into a sudden death shoot out. East Lansing won the shoot out 4-3. The Rams will begin district play May 31. They travel to Portage where they’ll take on perennial soccer powerhouse Portage Holt defender Sarah Blohm holds off a Williamston player. Central. COURTESY KEVIN RAMIREZ.

Another league title for Rams softball team

HOLT — The Holt Varsity Softball team clinched a third straight league title. In 2009, current Holt softball coach Kim Reichard made sure a 10-year gap with no titles was going to come to an end. The Rams were crowned league champions in 2009 and ‘10, and the team made sure to keep their new streak alive as they recently capped off this year’s 2011 season with an 11-1 league record and another CAAC Blue title to show for it. “We’ve just been playing pretty good as of late, and more girls seem to be committed to the sport,” Reichard said. “It feels good to be back on top.” The Rams have posted a 33-3 record in league play over the past three seasons, and will be going for their third district title in the past four years. One primary reason for the team’s success has been their outstanding pitching. The Rams feature one of the best pitching duos not only in the Lansing area, but also throughout the entire state.

great having those two because they are both so good, but if one is ever struggling, the other just comes in and it’s a seamless transition,” Reichard said. “You can’t get through with just one pitcher, so we are very blessed to have two

great ones on this team.” After winning a district title last season, the team’s goal is to get past the regional round in this year’s postseason.“We have great pitching. Now we have to make sure that we get our bats going and we have

to eliminate giving up big innings for any team,” Reichard said. “If we continue to pitch well and we are able to get some key hits in key situations, then we should be just fine.” Either way, win or lose, it has become evident that

the softball tradition is now back at Holt, and Reichard is just pleased to be a part of that. “The entire culture of Holt softball is changing,” she said. “The expectations are there now. And those expectations are to win.”
