OBJECTIVES Throughout my professional and academic experiences, I have acquired knowledge of the diverse complexities and details present in architectural projects. This inspires me to create patient-centered healing environments through insightful and thoughtful design, emphasizing its positive impact upon the users of a space. I aspire to work with a firm which emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, integrating streamlined coordination with all members of the project team. My goal is to contribute to my employer as I pursue licensure, working both collaboratively and independently at an architecture firm which aims to create highly successful environments, improving the lives of those impacted by their architectural design and vision.

PROJECT MUSCULOSKELETAL INSTITUTE PROGRAM FALL 2016 INDIVIDUAL GRADUATE PROJECT: ORTHOPEDIC AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER WITH ORTHOPEDIC AND SPECIALTY CLINICS SITE WEST ASHLEY, SOUTH CAROLINA PROFESSOR BYRON EDWARDS

My design for the Medical University of South Carolina Orthopedic Musculoskeletal Institute and Ambulatory Surgery Center was inspired by the structural form of the human spine, echoing the geometry of the vertebrae and disks within the building’s plan and section. Welcoming patients and family, the center creates a home-like feel with its warm tones on the exterior wood rainscreen and fiber cement paneling. The design allows for ample daylighting with the use of glazing throughout. To emphasize access to nature, two courtyards define the circulation of the building and enables an indoor/outdoor connection to views throughout the surgery center.

To promote community engagement with the town of Boone, NC and the Watauga Medical Center, the studio created proposals to create a Wellness District to revitalize the area transitioning to the hospital campus. To inspire a more community and health oriented urban design for the development of the actual Boone wellness district, overall street schemes were presented to the community of Boone, NC in three forums. The first phase, a team-based project, was a design based upon creating urban “rooms” and a unique identity for the town. Additionally, accessible pedestrian and bicycle paths, sustainable strategies and traffic calming measures were incorporated into the master plan.

Working with our client, members of the leadership team at the Watauga Medical Center, a community hospital in Boone, NC, we created master plans of the long-term potential development of the hospital campus, integrating the idea of connecting the wellness district explored in the previous semester with the hospital campus. The team-developed master plan was designed with the goals of integrating public spaces, connecting the wellness district with nature, sustainable parking, and overall effective functional relationships among hospital departments.

My flooring design for the Greenville Memorial Hospital bi-plane room (above/left) indicates equipment clearance while adding a distinct flair to the space. Additionally, my graphic designs of storks and footprints for the Women’s Hospital at Greenville Memorial Hospital (right) serve as wayfinding markers within the floor tiles, guiding visitors throughout the Labor and Delivery room areas.

SUMMIT DRIVE ADDITION PROJECT

CLASS SPRING 2013 ARCH 452 SENIOR SYNTHESIS STUDIO; LANSING DODD AND SAM FUNKE PROGRAM REGGIO-EMILIA INSPIRED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ADDITION SITE GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA PROFESSOR LYNN CRAIG

This Senior Exit Project, inspired by the ReggioEmilia educational philosophy, emphasizes interaction and creative methods of learning, the Summit Drive Interactive Education Center integrates opportunities for performances, gallery space and flexible studios which allow opportunities for the architecture itself to provide learning opportunities for students.

45

The crystalline geometries of the building incorporate three distinct forms which inform the program. An auditorium space, central piazza and atelier provide the anchoring spaces of the Center, while supplementary music, art, technology and science spaces contribute to the overall learning experience.

46

SUMMIT DRIVE

The location of the addition was informed by the circulation of the existing school, as well as the interaction with the courtyard, which allows for an open space beneath the structure for outdoor activities. The technical resolution and detail phase of the project (pictured at right) allowed for further exploration of the structure and materials.

Incorporating a central piazza, the connections between the spaces encourage a dynamic flow between areas. Concepts associated with the Reggio-Emilia system, particularly the ideas of Flexibility, Functional Circulation and Transparency, influenced the interior spaces, while the use of curtain walls and a balcony overlooking the constructed wetlands emphasize the connection between indoors and outdoors.

1600 meeting st. PROJECT CLASS FALL 2012 ARCH 352 STUDIO U CHARLESTON; LANSING DODD AND LUKE MORRIS PROGRAM CREATIVE COMMERCIAL/RETAIL SITE CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA PROFESSOR RAY HUFF

51

A commercial development which invigorates the creative process through a series of landscaped rooms, each with a unique identity, creating moments and cesuras as one travels through the site. Reflecting the non-linear creative process throughout the campus, the concept is centered around interweaving the currently disconnected site back into the eclectic urban fabric in order to develop a connection between the creative people who work at 1600 Meeting St. and the community as a whole.

1600 MEETING ST.

The exterior of the buildings at 1600 Meeting St. utilize vertical panels to create a rhythm and a strong impression which creates a distinct identity from the road. The panels mitigate sunlight as well as serve as a “canvas” for artists, allowing images to placed upon the panels and change the building’s appearance throughout the year. Within the interiors of the buildings, window walls allow natural light into the studio spaces, while spacious balconies allow for opportunities to interact.
