50th Anniversary Facts: Killarney won the 1982 BCs and displayed the trophy in the school’s showcase. The next season, coach Ted Cusick got a call from a woman who lived miles from the school saying she’d found a trophy in her trash can. She called Killarney because it was listed as the last winner. Cusick soon discovered it was the BC junior boys’ trophy with some figurines broken and the featured large golden ball missing. No one had noticed anything missing from the display case and there was no sign of forced entry. The ball and figurines were replaced for the 1983 playoffs, but it’s still a mystery as to how the trophy got out of the showcase and ended in the trash can.

50th Anniversary Facts: McPherson Park lost their first game in the 1976 BC junior tournament but won the championship. How could that happen? From 1975-82 when it was a 12- or 14-team tourney, one or two teams advanced to the winners’ bracket if they lost in the opening round by the fewest points. McPherson Park lost 4140 to K.L.O., then won the next three to claim first place.
