UN Interfaith Harmony Week 2013 Introduction of The Donzo Kounti By Patrick Gorham Lanfia Toure
On February 7th 2013, the AfricaWrites team led a delegation at the UN to represent indigenous African spirituality among Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Islamic and other religious leaders of the world in accordance with UN resolution AR/65/5. This historic and first of its kind African delegation was led by the Donzo Kounti, traditional chief of the ancient Donzoya (hunters society) of northern Guinea and AfricaWrites Field Coordinator Robert Saa Millimono and AfricaWrites Director Patrick Gorham. Donzo Kounti Simbon Woloba is the chief of Malinke traditional hunters and mystics of upper Guinea known as Donzo (Donso). In his role as chief of the hunters and revered spiritual leader among the Malinke people, Donzo Kounti Simbon Woloba has been designated by the Guinea government to mediate land disputes between hunters of Guinea and Mali. As chief and a respected elder, Donzo Kounti Simbon Woloba serves as a cultural and spiritual ambassador of goodwill in promoting dialogue, peace and cooperation between African communities of different ethnicity and nationality throughout Guinea and abroad.

World Interfaith Harmony Week was proclaimed by the General Assembly in resolution A/RES/65/5 adopted on 20 October 2010. In the resolution, the General Assembly, points out that mutual understanding and inter-religious dialogue constitute important dimensions of a culture of peace and establishes World Interfaith Harmony Week as a way to promote harmony between all people regardless of their faith Recognizing the imperative need for dialogue among different faiths and religions to enhance mutual understanding, harmony and cooperation among people, the General Assembly encourages all States to support during that week the spread of the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill in the world’s churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other places of worship, on a voluntary basis and according to their own religious traditions or convictions.
