T

he Lanesboro Arts Campus is a layered and memorable arts experience integrated into the fabric of Lanesboro. It builds on, and is designed to enhance and connect, existing assets― the river, scenery, recreation, history, and downtown― while extending art into the community. By utilizing art, design, and history to maintain, strengthen, and link what's unique and authentic about Lanesboro, the area's active and engaged community has made visible progress in stimulating economic growth and improving quality of life. From the Explore Lanesboro Medallion Walking Tour, the Poetry Parking Lot, and the Art Car to the Coffee Street Walking Bridge, the County Rd 8 bridge underpass and downtown's artful wayfinding signs, Lanesboro itself is an inviting and attractive destination for exploration by pedestrians and cyclists. The town's restored historic buildings, scenic parks and trails, and professional theatres and art galleries provide charming and idyllic settings for reflection and community interaction. Lanesboro's cultural institutions are also committed to activating the community beyond the confines of any one building. The Lanesboro Museum presents History Alive!, a touring set of historical pop-up plays featuring costumed locals, music and dancing. This year Commonweal Theatre Company is launching a new second stage series called Wealhouse. This will allow the professional company to break out from the Commonweal Theatre building to perform new kinds of stories at alternate indoor and outdoor sites. In addition to organizing the annual fine art festival Art in the Park, Lanesboro Arts activates various locations throughout town each summer with Surprise Sculpture, a free drop-in collaborative art education program where area youth create temporary, site-specific sculptures using a mixture of upcycled, recycled and fine art materials. In September of 2014, the City of Lanesboro unanimously passed a resolution declaring the entire town of Lanesboro an Arts Campus, becoming the first rural town in America to make such a declaration.
