The Annual Report is a publication of the Advancement Office of Richmond Montessori School. This report honors parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, alumni, and friends who have helped to make the 2017 - 2018 school year a success. We are truly grateful for the outpouring of generous community support. To better steward your gifts and reduce the impact on our environment, we present the Annual Report in an online format. This format eliminates the production and mailing of nearly 60,000 printed pages and allows us to highlight our RMS community in much more detail. This report recognizes gifts received between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018. Every effort has been made to ensure the information contained in this annual report is accurate. If we have made a mistake, please accept our sincerest apologies and contact the Office of Advancement at 804-741-0040. 3

Dear RMS Family,

Once again, I am delighted to share that 2017 – 2018 was another banner year for Richmond Montessori School. We exceeded both our enrollment and fundraising goals and achieved record participation in our annual fund. This Annual Report recognizes and celebrates those who have given time, talent and treasure to our school. Your investment in Richmond Montessori School directly supports our incredible faculty and enriches the experience of all of our students, from our youngest learners to our eighth grade community leaders. Most importantly, we were able to offer the kind of education that Maria Montessori envisioned, to more than 280 students - nurturing the natural curiosity of children, honoring the diversity of our community, and preparing our graduates to successfully navigate life and contribute to their world in a meaningful way. We could not have done so without the support of our wonderful community of volunteers; parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni, and friends of the school working together to sustain our flourishing school culture. “Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence. -Maria Montessori I feel truly fortunate to be connected to such an incredible and inspiring community. Your engagement continues to make a true and lasting difference in the lives of our students, and we are deeply grateful for all that you do to support the mission of Richmond Montessori School. Sincerely yours,

Grainne Murray Head of School

Dear Friends, We have so much to be proud of at RMS this year. As a community, we have many successes to celebrate, most notably: An overwhelmingly generous donation by the Wise family to the Wise endowment, which will provide tuition assistance for families for many years to come. We treasure their support of our community.

The creation of an Alumni Board, which has helped to foster relationships among RMS graduates while bringing more alums back to campus for special events. A successful Spring Fling event which brought so many families to campus for a fun night as we raised funds to send our teachers to the American Montessori Society conference in Washington, DC next year. Continued strong growth in enrollment and an increased interest in our Lower and Upper Elementary classes, which enabled us to open a new class in each of those programs this year. Achievement of our Annual Fund goal, which is crucial for RMS and allows us to provide everything necessary so that our students can excel in an authentic Montessori environment. As a parent, I am eternally grateful for all that RMS has provided my children. From igniting their academic and personal growth, to creating a supportive and inspiring community for them to develop into caring, compassionate and globally-minded citizens. I am truly thankful for our Head of School, Grainne Murray, and our dedicated Board of Trustees who lead our school with compassion and integrity, ensuring our continued success as a preeminent Montessori school in our region. While we are fortunate to have a strong financial foundation, tuition revenue from each student is not enough to maintain the high quality of materials, instruction and learning environments that make our school prosper. Contributions to the Annual Fund are necessary to sustain and enhance the academic experience that RMS provides. Sincere thanks to those listed in this Annual Report who donated to the school this year. I personally encourage each RMS family to consider making a meaningful gift (whether it’s $25 or $2500) to the 2018-2019 Annual Fund. With a goal of 100% parent participation, a gift of any amount helps our community grow even stronger. It is what makes our great school an exceptional one, and we cannot do it without your help. Finally, I want you to know that I am inspired daily by our entire school community – faculty, staff, parents, alumni and students – who dedicate their time and talents to finding ways to continually enhance the lives of our children and families. It is because of all of you that RMS is truly a special place. Thank you! Sincerely,

Allison Held Chair, RMS Board of Trustees

Annual Fund Recap All About the Annual Fund The Annual Fund is RMS’s most essential fundraising effort and involves all members of the community. It provides the vital difference between what is ordinary and what is extraordinary about the RMS experience. Its impact touches all aspects of our exceptional program, providing resources and opportunities that would not otherwise be possible. We ask our school community to consider RMS a top philanthropic priority by giving loyally and generously to the School. Support of the Annual Fund ensures that our programs continue to enrich the lives of our students and faculty.

The Annual Fund ensures that our school has the resources it needs to provide an authentic Montessori experience from the classroom to the library, from technology instruction to the playing field, from the theatre stage to the art studio, from toddlers to the eighth grade. The Annual Fund supports the resources essential to the RMS program and has a direct impact on every student, faculty and staff member. The annual fund provides funding to projects and programs that are beyond the scope of our tuition income and support the mission and strategic plan of Richmond Montessori School. Pledges and gifts can be made to RMS during our fiscal year, which runs from July 1- June 30. Gifts to the annual fund are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Endowments In order to provide essential qualities of a Richmond Montessori School education – diversity and excellence in teaching, the Board has established several endowments. The yield from the various endowments support programs and projects, while the principal, prudently managed, ensures a solid foundation for the future of the school. Endowments available for contributions include the Della Mae Reese Jefferson Scholarship Fund, the Wise Family Endowed Fund, the Martha Mabey Endowment for the Arts, the Training Educators and More (TEAM) Endowment, the Capital Facility Endowment and the school’s general endowment fund. For donors wishing to make a gift to RMS to establish a named endowment, a $100,000 gift is required. If, however, the purpose of the named endowment is scholarship, a new endowment may be created at a $50,000 minimum threshold. For donors wishing to make a gift to RMS to start a new unnamed endowment, a gift of $50,000 is required. For gifts below these minimum values, Board approval will be required to create a new endowment. In these situations, efforts will be made by the Advancement Office to direct the gift into an existing endowment prior to bringing any proposals to the Board of Trustees. For more information on contributing to an established endowment fund or to learn more about creating a new one, please contact the Advancement Office at 804.741.0040 ext. 49. Della Mae Reese Jefferson Scholarship Fund The Della Mae Reese Jefferson Scholarship Fund (DMRJ) was established in 2003 in honor of the mother of former RMS teacher, coach and mentor, Felecia Jefferson. Because Della Mae would often tell her children to “care about others,” the fund was created by an initial gift from Felecia and her siblings. It was fully funded in 2008. Interest from the principal is awarded annually by the Financial Aid Team to current RMS students who have demonstrated financial need. Martha Mabey Endowment for the Arts The Martha Mabey Endowment for the Arts was established in 1996 to honor former three-time Head of School, Dr. Martha Mabey, Emeritus. Part of this endowment fund includes a $500 scholarship that is awarded at graduation to a current RMS Middle School student for pursuit of visual, literary and performing arts study. In addition, approximately 5% of this endowment fund is utilized each year towards the arts component of the RMS Visiting Scholars program. Training Educators and More (TEAM) Endowment Established in 2004 through a major gift from RMS parents, Jim and Estelle Broduer, this endowment funds professional development opportunities for RMS staff and faculty. Capital Facility Endowment Established in 2012 through a major gift from RMS grandparent Ben Humphreys, Sr., this fund will help to ensure the upkeep of our facilities. The Wise Family Endowment Established in 2015 through a major gift from RMS parents, Marc and Laurel Wise, this endowment is to fund financial aid for students. 23

Hello, RMS Families, I would like to thank you all for another amazing year at Richmond Montessori School. We could not have done this without your time, energy and commitment. I am happy to share the community building events the RMPA sponsored throughout the 2017-2018 school year. Our first event of the year was Harvest Fest. A big thank you to Andrea Nikolov and Jana Smith for making this such a fun event for the entire family. Our RMS Alumni Association volunteered that day. It was awesome to have them back on campus. In November, we had our second roller skating party with a taco dinner and dessert. Parson’s Hall was changed into a sweet puppy-themed Bingo Hall in February. Kathleen Bobbio made this event so special. We “Walked like Egyptians” into our dance in March. Aekta Chawla and her committee hosted an amazing evening with dinner and Rice Krispy pyramids for dessert. Our last event of the year was the fun family picnic, chaired by Kara Augone. We had a traditional picnic with families pitching in to grill and children playing yard games. Emily Scarborough chaired our Hospitality Committee this year. She showed our teachers and faculty how much we appreciate them throughout the year. Jenni Booker Baker and Jessica Berdichevsky continued this effort chairing our “We Think the World of You” themed Teacher Appreciation Week. We had a very successful fundraising year. Michael Augone ran “Pizza Fridays” again this year. We also introduced Ellwood Thompson’s Mondays and later in the year Moe’s on Wednesdays. We are very thankful we had several dedicated parents onboard helping with our new lunch program. We continued our partnership with local bookstore, bbgb, to host another successful book fair organized by Vicki Browne. Pinki Shah coordinated our school pictures and family sittings with Freed Spirit. Shealyn Milesh did an amazing job reaching out to families to collect Box Tops. Thank you so much to the RMPA executive leaders. Their guidance is so valuable to the success of our events. Thank you so much to all of the parents for your support. RMS is an amazing school with a very special community. Sincerely,

Erin Campbell RMPA President
