The team at LANDSCAPE hope that everyone has been staying safe and keeping well throughout these hugely challenging times. Covid-19 has had a huge impact on the way in which we all live our lives and has been especially tough on our industry but with the recent re-opening of garden centres it certainly looks like things are moving in the right direction for all of us.

We are obviously taking the appropriate and proportionate steps based on Government advice and want to reassure everyone that the well-being of our visitors, exhibitors, and our staff is our number one priority. We will continue to reassess when necessary, and while the situation is everchanging, we will, of course, keep visitors and exhibitors up-to-date with our seminar programme and features as and when they develop.

Here at the LANDSCAPE Show, we want to reassure you that we are still full steam ahead with our event in Battersea Park this September. In this, our tenth year, the team are more eager than ever to provide the very best opportunity to reunite the industry and provide that much needed chance to re-connect, especially with the opportunities that have been taken away from us all this year. With so many trade shows cancelled including major industry events like RHS Chelsea it just means that the LANDSCAPE Show couldn’t be more perfectly timed to provide that “We’ll meet again” opportunity that we all need.

BURGER & CIE The wooden decking and composite market is enjoying rapid growth and forecast to increase by 17% over the next five years. Moreover, the market is moving on several fronts. For instance, there has been the successful emergence of composite boards, which enable companies such as Grad to offer an alternative to wood. Paul Burger of Grad comments: “Our NEKKO composite is available in chestnut brown and grey. Since it’s in the classic co-extrusion segment, the price is comparable to that of a top quality wood species.” Yet there’s even more movement! Whilst most terraces are still fitted using the classic method, Burger & Cie believes that there is a growing interest in invisible fastening systems. Paul Burger continues, “Rapid fitting and an exceptionally long lifespan are just a few of the benefits.”

The longer lifespan comes partly from the fact that the floorboards no longer come into contact with the support beams. There are fewer points of contact and therefore fewer points of wear and tear. The Grad concept that Burger offers makes it possible to take account of all configurations via the Grad 3D Software. There are five points for attention when planning and quantifying a project: the type of soil, the specie, the foot feeling, the total height of the decking, and the finishing touches. The simplicity of the concept means that all professionals can cope with the fitting.

Professionals who specialise solely in fitting terraces are quite rare because fitting a terrace is usually part of a wider project.

The AFI represent a market worth in excess of £1.1 billion, employing many thousands of people. Fence Sense Ltd is a newly incorporated company set up by two women who are passionate about ecological and ethical ideals, which includes preserving and utilising rainwater. They have achieved this via their unique, ecologically-friendly and versatile water butt/fence panel designed to be installed within existing fence posts.

With the help of mainly local, but all British companies, they have produced their first sample panels that withstood Storms Ciara and Dennis.

Each panel holds approximately 85 litres and a set of three, replacing one complete fence panel, is therefore able to hold up to 225 litres. Their black panels are manufactured from 100% recycled materials and many other colours are available in a fully UV and heat stabilized product used in rotomolding.

Fence Sense Ltd’s first production order has been delayed by Covid-19, so these are are the only panels available to photograph at present but, by the time of the LANDSCAPE Show, they will be in full production.

The Fence Sense water butt/fence panel is an ever evolving product with many other exciting and optional add-ons planned that will be on show in September. Their panels require little maintenance, need no weatherproofing and will include standard fittings for irrigation outlets.

Looking back at the beginning of 2020 to consider where they have been - everyone has been affected by the Covid-19 outbreak at a personal and professional level.

Developing Harrowden Turf’s B2C offering was paramount as they saw a reduction in business from landscape contractors and a shift towards online business.

In March Harrowden Turf began a social media campaign based around LinkedIn and Facebook. The campaign was focused on those self-isolating, working from home, looking after children unexpectedly or feeling vulnerable. “Let’s Build A Garden” was designed to encourage the sharing of ideas, the creation of resources and the practice of building a garden whether it was done with children, parents or alone.

“Let’s Build A Garden” used social media platforms to provide step by step ideas, resources and “homework” to encourage people to start a garden project – with a new step introduced every week or so using video and regular postings.

With six general guides, three videos and a clear identity, “Let’s Build A Garden” was designed to drive web traffic and build online business as the profile of the business moved more towards B2C. It is still quite difficult to know exactly how many garden projects have actually been started but the traffic and link clicks have shown significant growth in reaching those with school age children and those working from home with an interest in horticulture and providing them with free online resources to help them plan and develop a garden project.

EUROPLANTERS

Corten Steel is proving to be very popular now. However, this does not come without its issues. It will often leech onto surfaces and stain them along with clothes and furniture.

ANDREW FISHER TOMLIN LONDON COLLEGE OF GARDEN DESIGN

Are you a garden designer who was hoping to exhibit a garden at a show this year before they were cancelled? If so, the London College of Garden Design have a new platform for all your hard work. The #internationalgardenshow is their online show and is now open for all entries. The best bit is you can now showcase your work alongside your peers both locally and internationally.

The garden in their post was designed and built by Rob Skoblar of The Greener Garden Company. He was due to exhibit in the LCGD sponsored planting design section of the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. When it was cancelled he created the garden anyway and LCGD think you’ll agree it’s wonderful.

The LCGD also have a new competition with prizes including a £6,000 bursary and plants for schools. The brief is “Embrace your garden” and entries are open to anyone in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. The full brief is available by visiting lcgd.com.au/ competitions. RUTH MOILLIET SCULPTURE

This year has seen many of us shed the chaotic trappings of the lives we led in the ‘befores’ and return to our places of familiarity and security. A return to the core of what we believe we are. Ruth Moilliet’s Allium has always been her signature piece.

It was never a conscious decision but it evolved thus. People identified with them readily and they found their way into many private and public spaces, where life flows around them daily in whatever form that may take.

Ruth has chosen her Allium work as a centrepiece for the LANDSCAPE Show 2020 because in many ways, it represents where she, and many others are, as artists and

API The Association of Play Industries (API) is the lead trade association for the UK play sector. The use of living walls has become one of the established solutions for maximising urban green spaces and enjoying the many benefits that they bring. With the introduction of their new G-WALL System, Platipus have given everyone a robust and efficient solution to help create their own green space.

Conquest Creative Spaces were commissioned to design, create and maintain a beautiful private domestic garden in Keymer, West Sussex. The centrepiece was this beautiful 4m² green wall using the G-WALL modular living wall system.

The Landscaping Team from Conquest found the system quick and easy to install as there were no frames, rails, hanging grids or membranes and the individual cells were light and easy to clip together. With 64 individual planting pockets per square metre, the team had 256 pockets to establish the colour pallet of white and purple. Using various herbaceous plants from 1 to 1½ litres in size, the living wall was covered in Ferns, Thyme, Cyclamen bulbs, mixed grasses with Aubretia for colour. The irrigation lines were set to every second row of plants, allowing the G-WALL, drip through slots to work efficiently. Gabion side walls completed this impressive design.

GEORGE PLUMPTRE NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME

The impact of Coronavirus on the National Garden Scheme was seismic; at a stroke on 22 March the charity took a decision to close all gardens until further notice, something that had never been done before in its 90 + year history. And it was a decision which effectively turned off the tap of the charity’s income.

fortnight they began making short videos of their gardens, each one different and personal, which the National Garden Scheme have been editing and launching in batches of new ones every Thursday. These Virtual Garden Visits have been the material which has sustained the campaign from week to week.

It was very quickly clear that a number of the major nursing charities that the National Garden Scheme has supported for decades, such as the Queen’s Nursing Institute, Macmillan and Marie Curie, were absolutely on the front line of the Coronavirus crisis. And so just before Easter the charity launched a campaign, Help Support our Nurses, which would raise money via donations.

Now they are looking tentatively towards the time when their gardens will be able to open again, albeit under very different circumstances.

ANGLO AQUATIC As wholesalers, Anglo Aquatic supplies many Landscapers all year round, but much of their seasonal business revolves around wholesale supply to garden centres.

During these unusual and very difficult times, many garden centres have been told to close, to comply with Government social distancing, unless they supply certain essential goods.

Anglo Aquatic had to try and come up with a way to supply those shops remaining open, whilst complying with Government guidelines on the nursery themselves.

All office staff started to work from their own homes, using remote PC access and newly purchased mobile telephones.

Landscapers they were able to supply by delivering direct to site, making sure their delivery notes have no prices on. They always do that however.

Century property is beautifully complemented by the contemporary garden that matches the client’s lifestyle and love of mixing the old and the new.

The client being a Yorkshire lad himself made Crosland Hill Classic Buff Yorkstone a natural fit for a project that left both designer and client enthralled.

To assist their retail customers, they designed a unique but simple spreadsheet that permitted shops, still able to remain open, to obtain telephone or email orders from their customers, take card payments upfront and they then fulfilled that order direct to their customer’s home address, neatly delivered in a box by courier.

It meant they had to be very specific as what would fit in the boxes, so there were some restrictions and caveats, but Anglo Aquatic have managed to help a host of shops and aquatic centres satisfy their customer demands, despite lockdown.

So much so, that certain retail outlets have had their best April in some time.

The team at the LANDSCAPE Show have been hugely motivated by the incredible display of community spirit in recent times and were eager to play their part in raising a smile and helping everyone through these difficult times. It was with this in mind, back in March, LANDSCAPE launched their #GrowHappy initiative, in conjunction with the Landscape Institute, the London College of Garden Design and Davies White Landscape Architects to create a fun and exciting challenge for all of the family.

A simple but fun challenge, to grow the tallest sunflower in 100 days, plant them in a pot or garden and brighten up the neighbourhood! It goes without saying that we all need a ray of sunshine in our lives right now and what better way than with a Giant Sunflower!

We’ve been blown away by the response that #GrowHappy has generated on social media, with thousands of seeds being planted across the nation! We have everybody taking part from grandparents and grandchildren through to NHS keyworkers, Neighbourhood Groups, Girl Guides, Schools and Nurseries.

Our 100 day countdown officially began on Saturday 23rd May 2020 and we cannot wait to see all of the amazing Sunflowers on “measure up day” on Monday 31st August 2020.

ARCHITECTURAL PLANTS Architectural Plants have a long history of growing rare plants, mainly evergreen.

The main principle is that the plants have ‘shape and form’, sometimes in their natural state and sometimes it is thrust upon them through Architectural Plants’ creative maintenance techniques.

In the last 12 months they have increased their nursery space outside by 3 acres, inside by 1 acre and built a fog, mist and liner house. Alongside their laboratory, they now have some fairly impressive growing areas to allow them to ramp up production. The idea is that they can grow more of what they love and become more self-sufficient.

Architectural Plants hope to appeal to customers who want to design and build gardens that stand out and who want to support UK grown production where possible.

The Architectural Plants team look forward to meeting you at the LANDSCAPE Show, where they will be based on stand CP35.

The rigorous inspection process to join is one of the toughest within the industry. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers.

Decorative wall or free standing screens are made in the UK from premium products i.e. Metal, several different Metals, Wood, Eucalyptus Hardwood or MDF, Plastic in plain or many different colours. This company’s unique selling point is that all the 20 designs are available in any material, and any custom size – their art department can re-size, stretch or shrink if one of their standard sizes does not fill the gap intended for use.

If one of their designs is not suitable, then they can make a bespoke new one to your own drawing, if you supply the CAD drawing.

APLD

ACOUSTIC ARTS Acoustic Arts design bespoke outdoor musical installations for parks, sensory gardens, museums and schools. They were recently commissioned by Prior’s Court School in Berkshire to design a music garden for young people with autism.

Following extensive consultation, they created a set of percussion instruments and kinetic sound makers with specific tunings, mechanisms, colours, materials and layout that took account of the wide age range (5-25) and educational, physical and social needs of the students.

All instruments are played by hand or by using inbuilt actuators eliminating the need for unattached beaters. The various drums, chimes, xylophones and wheels are mounted on freestanding frames that can be accessed from all sides. Careful management of sight lines and spacing between instruments allows students to interact without infringing on each other’s personal space.

Each instrument is designed to engage different parts of the body. Actions include spinning, rocking, tapping, scraping and swirling using everything from hips to fingertips. Tactile and visual stimulation is provided by the use of contrasting colours and textures. The musical wheels and springmounted drums have clear polycarbonate plates to display the mechanical movements inside.

This has been Acoustic Arts’ most challenging and rewarding project to date. The students have responded enthusiastically to the installations and feedback from staff has been very positive. They are currently working on a new range of instruments inspired by the designs developed for Prior’s Court.

EUROPEAN BOXWOOD & TOPIARY SOCIETY

EBTS aims to encourage all things boxwood and topiary and in 2020 it’s ‘Time for Topiary’. They are running more ‘Learn to Clip’ courses where students, amateur gardeners and professionals can come together to acquire new skills from expert Topiarists. Whether it’s how to sharpen and clean tools so that you achieve the best shape and reduce potential plant infection, or plant suggestions and how to assess their shape, EBTS can guide you. Given the difficulties of meeting in person, EBTS is working on getting parts of the course online so that plants can benefit from the extra time people have in their gardens.

ASLA The 2020 ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture in Miami Beach is the single largest gathering of landscape architects and allied professionals in the world. HUXLEY GOLF

Huxley Golf specialise in the supply and installation of premier all-weather surfaces for golf and last year were asked to carry out a large private installation in the beautiful surroundings of the Dolomites in Northern Italy.

The client previously had two natural greens on the site, but was unable to keep up with the required ongoing maintenance. Huxley Golf were able to offer an alternative without the associated maintenance demands.

The resulting installation comprised of a Huxley Putting Green, a large Huxley Golf Green, multiple tee areas and large areas of run off using the Huxley Leisure Turf, as well as several bunkers.

For the 150 square yard (125sqm) Golf Green, the Huxley Golf team created the area using the company’s tournament quality Premier Nylon Golf Green – chosen for its superb ball reception and durability. The back tee lines up to the centre of the golf green and offers a shot of approximately 100yards. There are a further two tees and a fringe surround of varied width to create an interesting shape that blends well with its surroundings.

Beyond the Golf Green is the Huxley Premier Nylon Putting Green measuring 100 square yards (84 sqm) where the client can practice putting and short chis on a beautifully smooth surface.

All the surfaces are finished with the Huxley Premier Leisure Turf fringe surround resulting in a sensational area where the client can carry out serious practice or have fun with family and friends.

The Schiedel Pumice Garden Fire range has shown its versatility over the past 12 months with 2 very different projects at either end of the UK acting as a great showcase for the product.

The first one overlooking Poole harbour uses a traditional medium size Garden 950 set within a formal, seated area within the garden, providing a focal point that ties in beautifully with the clean geometric lines of the paving, fencing and the formal bed.

finish of the product as a blank canvas to stencil a design, which fits perfectly into the backdrop of the stone wall, with its climbing plants, set amidst the pale stone chippings.

In both cases, the light weight of the pumice panels and blocks, which make up the kit allow for simple installation on site, and the natural insulation of the volcanic pumice ensure a minimal distance to combustibles, whilst maximising the available space within the garden setting.

Vectorworks, Inc. selected the Jewel Changi Airport as the 2020 Vectorworks Landmark featured project by PWP Landscape Architecture to demonstrate what’s possible in landscape architecture and design. The imagery captures your gaze, making you question whether you’re actually looking at an airport instead of a climate-controlled forest reserve. What resulted from this redesign was a 130-feettall waterfall that pumps around 10,000 gallons of water per minute down through the airport’s interior into a renewable

reservoir below. By 2030, the airport’s capacity should increase from 65 million to 135 million.

IFLA EUROPE RE-FLOW Landscapers must implement digital solutions to stay safe while maintaining efficiency.

Winning new business as they return to work has never been more important for the landscaping sector. As they adopt new working practices in response to the coronavirus, now is the time to make changes so that the benefits of new business aren’t stifled by an increase in paperwork.

Daily job sheets for lone or socially distanced workers, more stringent risk assessments and SHEQ forms, as well as the usual planning, scheduling and maintenance forms and photos will create significant administrative challenges for landscaping companies. Fortunately, Re-flow now have sector specific software that bring all these processes online and streamline paper-based processes into a digital solution.

Tony Benger Landscaping in the South West has been in business for over 30 years and now employs over 80 people. They were one of the first companies to go digital with Re-flow, a mobile field service management solution. POLIS CERAMICHE SPA This year Polis’s range of external grade porcelain pavers has been enhanced by the addition of a stone effect series, Stoneheart.

Stoneheart is inspired by Nordic quartzite, and has been produced in a 2.0cm external paver to match the series produced in a 10mm thickness, for internal locations. As with all Polis pavers, it has an R11 / Group C anti-slip surface which passes the norms required for external wet conditions for both shoe traffic and bare feet.

The series is made up of four colours and at present is available in a large 60x120 rectified slab. Designed and crafted in the Gloucestershire countryside, the Escape Pod was born out of a desire to create a striking outdoor structure. A space to escape to, the pod offers a place to work, meditate, socialise or sleep. During these strange times, the Escape Pod has found another use. Clients have been using it as a place to isolate, with one family able to protect their daughter who coming back from University, was unable to safely stay in the house with two of the family exhibiting Covid-19 symptoms.

ONS figures show 49% of the UK workforce is currently working from home. Working

from home however can be distracting.

Perhaps an office pod provides a solution, a spot to work in the home and a space to escape the disruption and mental fatigue of working from the kitchen table. OXFORD GREEN ROOFS

Green roofs, otherwise known as living roofs, are becoming increasingly popular as we recognise their value both in helping biodiversity and improving the quality of our buildings. A green roof is possible on most structures providing the strength is adequate. They transform the look of a garden shed as well as helping a new extension to blend in.

One such project is a new build house where the whole roof is a living roof. Oxford Green Roofs built it as a wildflower meadow back in 2010. Part pitched and part flat it sits two storeys high and so, other than their once a year maintenance check and cut back, it is very much left to its own devices. Every year it changes, dependant on the

climatic conditions of that year and which plants respond favourably to those conditions. However, it always remains lush and varied just like any wild flower meadow would on the ground. Over the years there has been self-seeding of native flora specific to the area which in turn increases provision of a rich habitat for local bird and insect life.

All this balances out a site on which a building that originally reduced the land’s green space then returned it by installing a living and thriving green roof.

The amount of maintenance required for any green roof is a common question. This roof demonstrates just how little is required and the benefits both to the building and the local bio-diversity are easily measured.

SGD

The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) has been championing excellence in garden design for over 35 years. It is the only professional association for garden designers in the UK and counts some of the UK’s leading garden and landscape designers among its growing membership. It is active both nationally and internationally, promoting its aims through its monthly magazine, workshops, seminars and conferences.

The SGD also run the annual SGD Awards scheme designed to reward outstanding achievement in the garden and landscape design profession. Covering all aspects of design from private domestic gardens to engaging public spaces, the SGD Awards are dedicated to promoting excellence among landscape and garden designers.

The SGD Awards are open to Members of the SGD only including student members.

Categories include residential garden projects, international and commercial scheme and student design along with awards for planting, hard landscape and lighting design.

ADDAGRIP

Addagrip approved contractor Midland Decorative Surfaces was appointed to install an area of 1750m2 of BBA approved Addaset Resin Bound surfacing to rejuvenate the existing paving for the plaza of the Winnersh Triangle Business Park in Berkshire.

Winnersh Triangle is a 1.5 million sq ft mixed-use business park located in Reading, offering office spaces including major headquarter buildings, Grade A offices and start-up office suites.

The existing resin bonded surface was starting to age and the client was looking

for a solution to enable them to restore the decorative natural aggregate appearance with a product with a longer lifespan.

Midland Decorative Surfaces were asked by client Colliers to install a Resin Bound system over the old bonded paving. Once the existing surface had been prepared, Resin Bound Addaset in a 6mm Acorn blend was overlaid to create a decorative but hard wearing paving to smarten up the area in front of the hotel and shops on site.

The installation was completed in May 2019.

WISHBONE EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Wishbone Exterior Lighting was delighted to be chosen as the electrical contractor responsible for the specialist LED lighting and electrical infrastructure for the newly developed but timelessly iconic Sir Bobby Moore Bridge at Wembley Park, London.

The Sir Bobby Moore Bridge is often a visitor’s first impression of the stadium and many people pass under the bridge as they arrive and depart. Wishbone’s founding director, Branton Bamford was acutely aware of the sense of occasion the Bridge holds for many visitors: “As a sports fan myself and a regular visitor to Wembley Park over the years, I knew that we were a part of creating something incredibly special and we are proud to have been associated with this project.”

Using the latest in SPI technology, where each LED is individually controlled, Wishbone

installed pre-wired banks of LED modules used for the illumination of the 30M long walls. Multi layers of laminated glass were used to ensure a safe and robust cladding as this area is subject to the congregation of post-match fans who queue to get into the station. Glowline, a linear LED fitting, has been installed within the laser cut ceiling.

This links the two walls, completing the ‘crossover’ effect. Intelligent lighting control is provided by the Pharos “brain”. A section of the famous heritage tiles has been renovated and illuminated in the centre of the East wall, to celebrate the history of Wembley and Sir Bobby Moore, with the dedicated plaque to him being the centrepiece.

Many years of heavy footfall had caused a significant increase in soil compaction beneath one side of the ‘Old Man of Calke’, Calke Abbey’s oldest tree thought to be up to 1,200 years old. This had resulted in reduced water and oxygen availability to roots beneath this compacted ground.

This was reflected in the crown, which was displaying accelerated and significant die back on the footpath side. A solution needed to be found to alleviate the existing soil compaction and minimize further future compaction, ultimately preventing further die back.

A layer of Treetex geotextile was then laid on top, acting as a separation layer and pollution control measure. Panels of Cellweb®TRP were then laid on top of the Treetex and infilled with a clean angular stone. The Cellweb®TRP would minimise any further compaction within the rooting environment, while decomposers would naturally aerate the ground, reducing soil bulk density. The use of Cellweb®TRP infilled with clean angular stone would also allow the continued permeation of water and gas exchange between rooting environment and atmosphere.

A 90mm layer of mulched wood chip was applied to the existing ground surface before the installation of the Cellweb®TRP system.

This was used to encourage decomposers such as earth worms to help alleviate the ground compaction and aerate the soil.
