Outstanding Castles
Some seriously old castles here. Inverlochy just off the A82 to the east of Fort William is a remarkably well preserved 13th century castle, virtually unaltered since it was built. Originally it would have been defended on three sides by a moat and by the river on the other side. Another ancient 13th century castle, recently converted to an exclusive hotel, is the clifftop Mingary Castle on the south side of the Ardnamurchan peninsula. The other outstanding 13th century castle is Tioram perched on its tidal island in Loch Moidart. It is in a state of limbo at present with its owner having been refused planning permission to convert it into a house and a local trust wishing to restore it and open it to the public, but being unable to buy it!
French Connection
Just above Strontian you can find the workings of old lead mines. The minesā main claim to fame was the discovery here in 1790 of a new element ā strontium ā named after the village. French prisoners of war worked here, at about that time, extracting lead to be used on the continent against their fellow countrymen!
Neptuneās Staircase
An amazing feat of engineering, Neptuneās Staircase, just to the east of Fort William, is the longest staircase lock in Britain. Here, boats are lifted up 20 metres through 8 locks in only 90 minutes. Completed in 1822 the Caledonian Canal connects the west coast of Scotland with the east and allows boats to by-pass the dangerous waters of the Pentland Firth. A great place to stop and enjoy superb views of Ben Nevis.
Jacobite Steam Train
The Old Fort
Fort William owes its name to the large fort constructed here in 1690. With accommodation for 600 soldiers it was the westernmost of a chain of three forts built to help pacify the Highlands. It was demolished to make way for the West Highland Railway in 1894. While itās no great attraction, at the east end of town you can still see a small section of the fortās outer wall, proof, if you need it, that there was once a massive fort that gave the town its name!
Ardnamurchan Lighthouse
Designed by Robert Louis Stevensonās uncle, Alan Stevenson, the lighthouse was built from pink Mull granite in 1849 and rises to 36 metres in height. The Egyptian style of both the main building and the Keepersā Cottages make it unique in Scotland. The arrival of electricity in 1976 and full automation in 1988 mean that, like all other lighthouses in Scotland, Ardnamurchan is un-manned. Well worth a visit, the on site visitor centre and museum detail the lighthouse history. You can also access the restored engine room and workshop with the original foghorn.
Glenfinnan Viaduct
If you are remotely interested in Harry Potter films or the pioneering use of concrete, this beautiful curved railway viaduct is a āmust visitā! Built in 1901 by āConcrete Bobā MacAlpine it is an outstanding feat of concrete engineering and the first and longest mass concrete viaduct in Britain. It is also on the route of the Hogwarts Express! Between April and October there are some great photo opportunities here when the Jacobite Steam Train passes over the viaduct.

BEST LOCAL WALKS
Steall Falls
One of the best short walks in Scotland. This route heads below Britainās highest mountain, Ben Nevis, following the dramatic and beautiful Nevis Gorge and leads to the awesome Steall Falls. Here a hidden meadow is the perfect picnic spot.

Castle Tioram & the Silver Walk
A fascinating coastal route cut out of the rock through truly spectacular scenery. Add in stunning Castle Tioram, a deserted hamlet, pine-fringed hill lochs and a view out to the Isles, and you have a truly classic half-day walk.
Distance: 5.75km / 3.5 miles
Time: 2.5 - 3.5 hours
Glencoe Lochan
A gem of a walk following waymarked trails through ornamental woodland at the foot of Glen Coe. The picturesque and serene lochan (small loch or lake) and its wooded shores contrasts with the wild and dramatic mountain backdrop.

Enjoy fabulous views of Loch Shiel and visit the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct - look out for the regular steam train - otherwise known as The Hogwartās Express. You can also view the Glenfinnan Monument where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his flag at the start of the 1745 Jacobite uprising.

Ben Nevis
Tackle Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain. This is the easier of two routes described on Walkhighlands but is still a tough day out for experienced hillwalkers rewarded by fabulous views and life-long memories.

Buachaille Etive Beag
Bag two Glencoe Munro peaks on this magnificent but strenuous hillwalk. A good path aids the climb which leads to a great ridge walk with stunning views down Loch Etive and of the surrounding peaks of Glencoe.

Whisky lover or total newbie āeveryone should visit a whisky distillery at least once for a genuine centuries old experience. The north west of Scotland has plenty of famous malt whisky distilleries ready to welcome you and share their secrets.
Just outside Fort William is the long-established Ben Nevis Distillery, one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland, and home to āThe Legend of the Dewā of Ben Nevis Visitor Centre.
Established in 1825 and situated at the foot of Britainās highest mountain, the Ben Nevis Distillery is an impressive and historic place. It draws its water from the Allt aāMhuilinn which originates from two pools on Ben Nevis itself.
Malt whisky distilleries offer a variety of behind-the-scenes tours. They will let you experience the processes that must be gone through before a grain of barley is converted into a drop of malt whisky.

DID you know?
The story goes that Long John Macdonald was a notorious bootlegger who came in from the cold and took out a license for the Ben Nevis distillery, just outside Fort William, in 1825. Before the end of the 19th century Ben Nevis was producing one of the first brands of single malt āLong Johnās Dew of Ben Nevis.
Most distilleries have excellent shops where you can buy a range of their single malts of varying ages, many of them unobtainable elsewhere. Some distilleries even bottle rare single cask whiskies.
For something a bit different, Pixel Spirits is a Scottish gin and rum distillery set in the scenic grounds of Loch Leven Hotel in North Ballachulish, south of Fort William. As well as a range of small batch signature and artisan gins, they offer the unique opportunity to create your own recipes and distilling your own gin or rum using the spices and botanicals of your choice to flavour your bespoke spirit. You will be given expert tuition through all the processes by their Master Distiller, and you can then bottle, label and wax seal your own bottle before taking it home. A fantastic memento from your time in this picturesque part of Scotland.

Getting out on the water and spending time on a boat can be invigorating and inspiring, especially here with seal watching trips down Loch Linnhe and eagle spotting cruises down remote Loch Shiel. The fresh air, the scenic landscapes, and the wildlife watching will all truly connect you to this wonderful part of Scotland and make your visit a memorable one.
From Arisaig there are daily sailings to the islands of Eigg, Muck and Rum, with Arisaig Marine allowing you a few hours ashore. Excellent wildlife focused trips depart from Ardnamurchan for Mull and even the Treshnish Isles.
The Arisaig and Ardnamurchan trips offer you a good chance of seeing minke whales, common dolphins, porpoises, grey seals, common seals and basking sharks as well as sea eagles, golden eagles and a host of seabirds. Manx shearwaters are guaranteed off Rum where some 60,000 pairs, one fifth of the world population, nest in burrows high on the mountain slopes.
Best whale watching months are between mid-June and midSeptember. Donāt expect to see puffins after the beginning of August, they will have long since left their burrows!
From Fort Williamās Town Pier, you can hop onboard Elsie, āThe Orange Boatā, operated by Cruise Loch Linnhe and take in the magnificent mountains surrounding the loch, including spectacular views of Ben Nevis.
For a great day out, you can make the trip to Glenelg and take the original ferry crossing to the Isle of Skye, and while in Skye youāll find fantastic wildlife sighting opportunities on Misty Isle Boat Trips.
The southern end of Loch Ness, at Fort Augustus, is also not far from Fort William and well worth a visit to see the historic loch, home to Nessie and certain to delight monster hunters. Cruise Loch Ness offer a variety of tours for you to explore the world-famous Loch Ness.

With a huge range of outdoor activities, Fort William justly promotes itself as the āOutdoor Capital of the UKā.
High on the adrenalin scale are canyoning, coasteering, funyakking and whitewater rafting.
You can try out a range of forest high rope courses, or zoom up a hill on a Segway ā the space age way to travel. The coast here is ideal for sea kayaking and the hills are famous for their climbs. You can sharpen your skills at a large indoor climbing centre, go rock climbing and abseiling, or experience the worldās biggest indoor ice climbing wall.
Other options include horse riding, and quad bike tours that take you well off the beaten track. The mountain bike trails are world class. With several rivers you have every chance of catching a salmon or sea trout. All lochs have brown trout and some have arctic char.
The region is well known for its winter sports with the resorts of Nevis Range and Glencoe offering some of Scotlandās best skiing and snowboarding.

As well as outdoor activities, thereās also a wide range of options for fun days out with the family.
For a unique experience, with strong Harry Potter connections, take the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig. Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near Ben Nevis, it crosses over the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct overlooking the Jacobite monument and finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!
Or visit Treasures of the Earth, a glittering array of gemstones, giant crystals and fossils. Donāt forget to enter their cave which makes crystals magically change colour and glow in the ultraviolet light. Youāll be amazed by the fossil remains ranging from 500-million-year-old trilobites, to petrified wood, ancient amber and a sabre-tooth tiger skull!
To the west, along the coast from Arisaig youāll discover some of the most entrancing beaches in the British Isles, one with the whitest of sands. If the water here is too cold for swimming, try the Lochaber Leisure Pool in Fort William.

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britainās most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!
The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summerās day, you can see the āSmall Islesā of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films āHighlanderā and āLocal Heroā.

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the āHarry Potterā films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. āThe Jacobiteā may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.
MALLAIG (Malaig)
The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.

Dunrobin CASTLE
The most northerly of Scotlandās great houses. It is the largest house in the highlands, with 189 rooms and is one of Britainās oldest continuously inhabited houses, dating in part from the early 1300s
The Gardens
The Gardens were laid out in 1850 by the architect Sir Charles Barry, who was responsible for the Victorian extension to the Castle and who designed the Houses of Parliament. The arrangement of the Gardens, inspired by those at Versailles, have changed little in the 150 years since they were planted. Despite its location so far north, the sheltered Gardens are able to support a surprising range of plants.
The Museum - Open 10.30am to 4pm Built by William, Earl of Sutherland as a Summer House and extended by the 3rd Duke, the Museum houses a collection of hunting trophies and other items brought from all over the world, together with many objects of interest presented to the Museum by friends of the Sutherland family.
