YEAR OF COASTS & WATERS 2020 In 2020, Scotland celebrates its Coasts and Waters with a year-long programme of events and activities which will shine a spotlight on these vital elements of our landscape. From our beautiful natural features including coasts, lochs and rivers to our industrial heritage such as our canals, mills and the creation of our national drink – whisky, Scotland’s Coasts and Waters have shaped our culture, our stories and our way of life.

Ruthven Barracks
Historic attractions Forts and Barracks A lawless and roadless part of Britain where rebellions were frequent, the Highlands were once a major headache for the government. To sort out the problem, in the 1700s the region was garrisoned with troops. Forts and barracks were built and linked by new roads and bridges. This is the place to get an idea of the effort and investment that went into pacifying this area not so long ago. The splendid, now ruined, Ruthven Barracks, near Kingussie, once provided accommodation for 120 soldiers and 28 horses. It is a great place to visit, with superb views over the Insh marshes. Just over the hill on Donside is the impressive castle of Corgarff. It was rebuilt as a barracks in 1748, with a new star-shaped outer wall pierced by musket loops. Highland Folk Museum
Balmoral Castle
River Highway Long before canoeists paddled on the Spey, the river and its tributaries were used to float timber down from the great pine forests of Abernethy, Rothiemurchus and Glenmore to shipbuilding yards at the river mouth. You can still see traces of the old log floating dams at the outflows of Loch Morlich, Loch an Eilein and Loch Einich.
Townships and Sheilings Had you visited the Cairngorms 250 years ago you would not have seen a town, village or even an individual farm. People then lived in scattered townships of a few heather thatched houses and farmed the land in common. In the summer women and children went up into the hills with the cattle and stayed in small turf huts or sheilings. Ruins of these long deserted settlements, often marked in this area by an old larch tree, are easy to find. The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore has an excellent example of a rebuilt township.

Distilleries
he North East of Scotland has plenty of famous Malt Whisky distilleries ready to welcome you and share their secrets.
Speyside, on the lower reaches of the River Spey, is the heartland of the Scotland’s malt whisky industry. The 50 distilleries in this small area produce 60% of the country’s malt whisky. Amongst the world famous distilleries you’ll discover here are: The Glenlivet; Glen Grant; Glen Moray; Glenfiddich; Strathisla and The Macallan. A recent addition is the small family owned Ballindalloch Distillery. Closer to Strathspey are the award winning Tomatin Distillery, just up the A9 from Aviemore, and Dalwhinnie, Scotland’s highest distillery. Further east is Lochnagar on Deeside. Also well worth visiting is the Speyside Cooperage in Aberlour – makers and repairers of 150,000 oak casks per year for the local malt whisky industry.

Malt whisky distilleries offer a variety of behind-thescenes tours. Here you’ll experience the processes that have to be gone through before a grain of barley is converted into a drop of malt whisky. Most distilleries have excellent shops where you can buy a range of their single malts of varying ages, many of them unobtainable elsewhere. Some distilleries even bottle rare single cask whiskies.

GREAT Walks
iscover the finest walking that Scotland has to offer.
Some of the finest country walking is here, with a network of trails through superb Caledonian pine forests, long glens stretching deep into the hills and easy access on well-made paths to the high ground. To get a flavour of these forests try the path around beautiful Loch an Eilein with its island castle. Equally inspiring are the many trails in Glenmore, especially that go through the Pass of Ryvoan to the Green Lochan.
Lochan Uaine, Green Loch
For a longer low level walk try the path through the Forest of Rothiemurchus and on up Glen Einich into the heart of the Cairngorms. Neighbouring Glen Feshie is another special place with ancient pines, beside a river in an ever narrowing glen. Lairig Ghru, Cairngorms National Park

In Scotland the public have the right of access to most land and inland water, provided they respect the rights of the people and organisations who earn a living from the land, particularly livestock farmers. The Scottish Outdoor Access Code www.outdooraccess-scotland.scot - a really useful document – gives examples of the rights and responsibilities of all users from hill walkers to mountain bikers, kayakers to campers. Essential reading especially for dog owners! Paths have hugely improved in recent years. You’ll find that there are usually a range of well-marked trails wherever you are, especially on land owned by Forestry and Land Scotland. Loch an Eilein Visitor Centre

Wildlife Watching
Crested tits and crossbills
If you’re hankering after some Strathspey specials, such as crested tit and Scottish crossbill, then try the trails network on the Rothiemurchus Estate. Orient yourself at the visitor centre beside the B970 ‘ski road’, then enjoy one of the many woodland and loch-side walks, including the delightful trail around Loch an Eilein. Go to the estate’s trout fishery, close to the bridge over the Spey at Aviemore, to see ospreys trying for fast-food take-aways in summer.
Caledonian pinewoods In the hamlet of Glenmore, about 6 miles from Aviemore, the Glenmore Visitor Centre will help you to get your bearings before sampling some of the walks through the Caledonian pinewoods here. Watch for red squirrels and signs of pine martens on the tracks.
Red Squirrel
The original ospreys The osprey eyrie you can see from the Loch Garten Osprey Centre in Abernethy Forest is perhaps the world’s best-watched nest. Ospreys have bred in the area for half a century, with Garten eyrie occupied since 1958. Make the pilgrimage by going along the B970 east of Boat of Garten (the ‘osprey village’) and follow signs along the minor forest road to a car park. Look for voles nibbling nuts under the feeder by the ticket office. At the centre, attractions in addition to the star fish-hawk turn include siskin, great-spotted woodpecker and red squirrel.

Carrbridge Golf Course
T
Great Golf
his area has some of the best heathland golf courses in Britain. The renowned Boat of Garten Golf Club is perhaps the course that best captures the essence of Highland golf. From its 2nd tee and indeed most parts of the course, the views of the Cairngorms are breathtaking. The spectacular Aviemore Spey Valley course, snaking its way along the River Spey, is one of Scotland’s newest championship golf venues. It is a long and challenging course and includes the longest par 5 in Scotland. With the Cairngorms as a backdrop, it is perhaps also the country’s most scenic course. Other challenging 18 hole courses include Grantown-on-Spey, Newtonmore and Kingussie, with two excellent 9 hole courses at Nethybridge and Carrbridge. The latter is a real gem with a great variety of quite tricky holes, beautifully tended and with fabulous views in all directions. For a familyfriendly course try Craggan Outdoors. Children are particularly welcome here. For detailed information on the outstanding golf courses of the Scottish Highlands, check out: www.golfhighland.com Carrbridge Golf Course

Best Beaches
he best inland beach in Britain has to be Loch Morlich Beach with its golden sands. At the heart of Glenmore Forest, surrounded by ancient Caledonian pine trees, with the Cairngorms towering above the loch, and a water sports centre, this is a superb place to be at all times of the year. Only a short distance from the Cairngorms are the equally superb coastal beaches of Nairn, Culbin, Findhorn, Rosemarkie and the intimate Hopeman Beach with its gaily painted beach huts. Nairn Beach

Highland Games
ne of Scotland’s oldest and highly treasured traditions are the Highland Games.
With a history stretching back nearly 1,000 years to King Malcolm’s search for a royal messenger, each Highland Games includes tests of strength and endurance including the caber toss, hammer throw and weight over height events. Highland culture is also on display with the dancing competitions throughout the day and the massed pipe bands playing at opening and closing ceremonies. There are more than 60 games each year across the country from Skye to St Andrews, and from Halkirk to Cowal.

Dunrobin CASTLE The most northerly of Scotland’s great houses. It is the largest house in the highlands, with 189 rooms and is one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses, dating in part from the early 1300s. The Gardens The Gardens were laid out in 1850 by the architect Sir Charles Barry, who was responsible for the Victorian extension to the Castle and who designed the Houses of Parliament. The arrangement of the Gardens, inspired by those at Versailles, have changed little in the 150 years since they were planted. Despite its location so far north, the sheltered Gardens are able to support a surprising range of plants. The Museum - Open 11am to 4pm Built by William, Earl of Sutherland as a Summer House and extended by the 3rd Duke, the Museum houses a collection of hunting trophies and other items brought from all over the world, together with many objects of interest presented to the Museum by friends of the Sutherland family.

The Castle of Mey is situated on the North coast of Caithness just off the A836 between Thurso and John o’ Groats For further details please telephone 01847 851473 or www.castleofmey.org.uk
A ROYAL HOME When the Queen Mother first saw it, the Castle of Mey was in a poor state of repair. Recently widowed and looking for somewhere to escape from the public eye, she vowed to save the castle from destruction. This she did and in the process, created a much-loved holiday home to which she returned every summer for the rest of her life. The castle today is kept as it was when The Queen Mother was in residence and, with the help of the knowledgeable guides, the visitor gains an irresistible picture of her personality, her interests and her love of life.
The Lost Garden Lovingly Restored
The Visitor Centre
The walled garden was dear to The Queen Mother’s heart and represents a real triumph over the neglect of time and the onslaught of the elements.
The Animal Centre
In the visitor centre you will find our unique shop with many Scottish products also Royal Collection china, a range of Mey Selections and scarves made from The Queen Mother’s own check or the Castle of Mey tweed. The tearoom has stunning views to Orkney on a fine day and serves fresh local produce, cream teas and home baking. The shop and tearoom are open from 1000 hours to 1700 hours; entrance is free and there is easy wheelchair access. Most major credit cards are accepted.
The Animal Centre is only a short walk from the Castle where there are several different breeds of sheep and lambs, a rabbit, a variety of poultry, Daisy the wooden cow who can be milked, Alice the donkey, two goats Libby and Beebe and two pigs. It can be a fascinating experience especially for children.

With over 220 years of experience in working with the world’s finest fibres, Johnstons of Elgin is renowned for luxurious cashmere and fine woollen products, woven and knitted in the heart of Scotland.
The softest cashmere from China and Mongolia, and fine lambswool, is spun, dyed and woven at the original mill on the banks of the River Lossie in Elgin, where Johnstons of Elgin has manufactured for over 200 years. The only remaining British mill to convert natural, raw material into the finished product, Johnstons of Elgin utilises the traditional skills of craftsmen and women, alongside innovative technology and contemporary design.
Our unique family business has heritage and tradition at its core, while we continually push the boundaries of design and innovation to provide our customers with products of the highest possible standard. In our Scottish mills, employing over 1000 people in total, heritage equipment sits side by side with cutting edge technology. This balance of old and new is what makes us so special.
We are proud to hold a Royal Warrant of Appointment as Suppliers of Tweed to HRH The Prince of Wales, recognising our high level of service, quality and excellence. Visitors can find out more about our history and manufacturing processes by taking a free Mill Tour at our Elgin and Hawick sites. Our five-star VisitScotland tourist destinations each have a Heritage Centre, Mill Shop and Coffee Shop. Our Coffee Shops serve the highest quality local produce, from home bakes to Scottish seafood options. Our St Andrews retail store, at 4 Pilmour Links, is a five-star VisitScotland tourist attraction, while our flagship stores at 77 New Bond Street, London and 11 Multrees Walk, Edinburgh offer a unique retail experience with unparalleled customer service.
