Welcome to

Dumfries and Galloway The quiet network of rural roads makes countryside touring very rewarding. There are historic castles and other attractions, and a great selection of rural craft-shops, galleries and cafes. It is also a walkers paradise. Inspiration for Artists The association of Kirkcudbright and E.A. Hornel, one of the ‘Glasgow Boys’, is perhaps the best-known artistic link - but plenty of contemporary artists also find inspiration in Dumfries & Galloway. The annual ‘Spring Fling’ brings together a wealth of creative talent. The hills, woodlands, coastline, pasture and hedgerow, plus the colourful frontages of the little towns, make South-West Scotland a visual delight.

Galloway’s Forests The 620 sq km Galloway Forest Park was designated as such about 70 years ago. Its mature woodlands and miles of marked trails are open to all. The Southern Upland Way cuts through, and an enjoyable forest drive called

The Raiders Road, linking Clatteringshaws Loch in the west and New Galloway. Glentrool is especially scenic. Walking, mountain biking, watching the abundance of wildlife, relaxing away from it all…

Gardens Galore The benign climate makes Galloway a great place for gardens. Notably Castle Kennedy Gardens, Galloway House Gardens and Threave Garden, Logan Botanic Garden in the Rhins of Galloway is noted for its exotica from the southern hemisphere.

High in the Uplands The Lowther Hills lie in the heart of the Southern Uplands, with high and rolling hilltops and the highest

village in Scotland, Wanlockhead. At 1531ft (467m), it is noted for its fascinating Museum of Lead Mining. You can go gold panning, as these hills hold a variety of minerals. The lower reaches of Nithsdale lead on to Drumlanrig Castle with its magnificent art collection.

Colourful Towns The ‘Queen of the South’, Dumfries is an important centre with a good range of shops and a history, back to its founding as a royal burgh in the 12th century. The town is associated with Robert Burns, who spent the last years of his life here. Nearby are the moated medieval Caerlaverock Castle, and Sweetheart Abbey. Castle Douglas’s shops sell an especially good range of produce. This old established market centre is Dumfries & Galloway’s official ‘Food Town’. Dalbeattie is an attractive community notable for its granite buildings. Picturesque Newton Stewart is the gateway to the Galloway hills. Kirkcudbright, the official ‘Artists’ Town’, has a very active cultural life, with festivities throughout the summer. Wigtown is Scotland’s Booktown, Stranraer for the Rhins, including picturesque Portpatrick and Scotland`s “Lands End” the Mull of Galloway, the most southerly point in Scotland, Creetown for its museums, Gatehouse of Fleet for the Mill on the Fleet.

The Castle of St John, Stranraer This imposing structure in the centre of town was built around 1500 by the Adairs of Kilhilt, one of the most powerful families in Wigtownshire. Over the centuries it has served as a home, a local court, a military garrison and a prison.

Sanquhar Tolbooth Museum Discover Sanquhar’s world famous knitting tradition and the story of mines and miners of Sanquhar and Kirkconnel. How did the ordinary people of Upper Nithsdale live and work in times past? All this and more can be found in the town’s fine 18th century tolbooth.

The Stewarty Museum, Kirkcudbright Explore the natural and human history of The Stewartry. The permanent exhibition includes the “Siller Gun” – Britain’s earliest surviving sporting trophy, and works by Kirkcudbright artists including Jessie M King.

Castle Kennedy Gardens One of Scotland’s Finest Our unique Gardens lie within 75 acres of landscaped grounds with legendary tree lined avenues, sculptured land forms, lochs and woodland. The 16th century Castle Kennedy ruins sit magnificently on a peninsula to the south of the Gardens while to the north, lies 19th century Lochinch Castle with its fairy tale turrets and towers – perfect for weddings. Garden Ranger Events

We run a seasonal programme of family orientated Ranger led events including Mini Beast Adventures, Pond Dipping, Building a Camp Fire, Tepee and Den Building, Painting with Mud and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, based on Michael Rosen’s book! These popular events bring the gardens to life, entrancing and entertaining the many families who visit us.

Seasonal Garden Walks

Join our award winning Head Gardener, Clan Chief John MacArthur of that Ilk, with us for 28 years, on his fascinating and expertly informed regular guided tours of our Gardens. Group visits are offered general or special interest tours with a range of catering options available from the Garden’s Tea Room. There is a 10% discount on the entry fee for groups of more than 20 people.

Holiday Cottages Open Air Theatre Luxury self-catering holiday accommodation is available

The romantic ruins of 16th century Castle Kennedy create the perfect, dramatic backdrop for our family orientated Open Air Theatre performances. We’re proud to welcome many of the UK’s best touring theatre companies with action packed fun!

Snowdrop Walks and Easter Egg Bonanza

Seasonal attractions with enduring appeal – our famous swathes of snowdrops in spring as well as our later spectacular displays of daffodils make our woodland walks at this time of year especially magical. During the Easter break we offer a fantastic Easter Egg Bonanza over ten days with a hunt for clues round the Garden and a delicious chocolate egg as a prize!

all year on the Lochinch Heritage Estate. Choose from the Chauffeur’s Apartment, at Lochinch Castle Stable Courtyard, the historic Ice House Cottage, and Balker Lodge, a traditional Gate House Lodge, all offering a stylish stay in a peaceful and private setting. Guests enjoy free access to Castle Kennedy Gardens.

Lochinch Castle Weddings
