Welcome to
Edinburgh and the Lothians Welcome to Edinburgh and the Lothians, where the buzz of Scotland’s capital city sits in perfect contrast to the peaceful tranquillity of the surrounding Lothians region. Whatever the weather or time of year, the city skyline always manages to impress. Old Town and New Town See the layout of the city from the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle, at the core of the Old Town. The Royal Mile runs downhill, with a large selection of places of interest on the way, including the Camera Obscura, Gladstone’s Land, St Giles Cathedral, John Knox House and many more. Atmospheric old ‘closes’ (alleys) run off the main street adding to the mystery of the Old Town. The New Town, built from the mid-18th century, lies to the north of the Castle and its story is told at the National Trust for Scotland’s Georgian House in Charlotte Square.
Cosmopolitan Capital Simply one of the most beautiful capital cities of Europe, the city has an accommodation choice to match, as
How to use this folder This folder is full of information on the best places to visit in this area. At the front you will find leaflets and information on local attractions, followed by a new section on More Great Things to See & Do and Places to Eat. For information on attractions further afield, have a look at the national map and ‘Things to See and Do in the Rest of Scotland’ listing at the centre of this folder. This is followed by leaflets on other attractions, many of which may be within easy reach of where you are staying.
well as more restaurants per head of population than any other Scottish city. As host to the annual Edinburgh International Festival, the largest of its kind in the world, Edinburgh also has a rich and diverse cultural life, especially strong in museums and galleries.
A Close Encounter One of the best ways of getting to the heart of the city’s historical ambience is to join one of the guided walks. Some take historical themes, where you walk in the footsteps of the monarchs and soldiers who have passed along the Royal Mile. Others take a more sinister turn, with ghost tours and graveyard tours firm favourites! You can also tour the famous Mary King’s Close, a 17th-century complex of closes off the Old Town’s High Street, long abandoned and built over.
Grazie.Vi auguriamo una splendida permanenza, e ritornare ancora in Scozia.

Green Space Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden is a place to pause and rest while exploring the city. ‘The Botanics’ is a popular resort for locals and visitors alike, throughout the year. Superb glasshouses, a magnificent rock garden, a major rhododendron collection plus a fascinating and densely planted Chinese Hillside exhibit are just some of the highlights in this display of at least 6% of the world’s known plants. Likewise close to the city centre is the wilder green space of Arthur’s Seat the city’s own mini-mountain, offering fine views of the Old Town skyline and the Palace of Holyroodhouse from Salisbury Crags. Walk round the park for a pint of beer at the Sheep’s Heid in Duddingston, tucked below the steep slopes.
Out in the Lothians The Lothians’ countryside rings the city and includes the high walks and trails on the Pentland Hills, as well as some fine coastline, especially around the John Muir Country Park by Dunbar. Linlithgow Palace, Rosslyn Chapel and Tantallon Castle are some of the area’s historic features, while the seaside

communities of Gullane and North Berwick, with its fascinating Seabird Centre, are also popular little resorts. Other little red pantile roofed villages tucked into the edge of the Lammermuirs, such as Gifford, also make good excursions within easy distance of the city.
Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016 From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Discover the richness of the country’s beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside contemporary and cutting edge designs of today.

The Georgian House
Tel 0131 226 3318
EH2 4DR (in Edinburgh city centre at 7 Charlotte Square) This fine house, set in a fascinating 18th-century designed landscape, is something of a time capsule. Newhailes contains a fine collection of paintings, including portraits by Medina and Ramsay, and its library played host to many famous figures of the Scottish Enlightenment. Much original decoration and furnishings have survived intact, though worn, and visitors will see an untouched rather than immaculately restored house.
The Georgian House is a vivid re-creation of life in late 18th-century Edinburgh. Experience a taste of high society – and contrast this with the fascinating ‘below stairs’ life of the servants who made this elegant lifestyle possible. Children can dress up in replica Georgian costumes (and wear them as they explore the house if they like!), as well as handling replica objects, writing with quill pens and colouring in Georgian-themed sheets.

Gladstone’s Land
Tel 0131 226 5856
EH1 2NT (477B Lawnmarket, on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, near the castle)
One of the favourite country retreats of the Stuart dynasty, Falkland Palace was the scene of Mary, Queen of Scots’ happy childhood years. Set in a charming village amid the gentle scenery of the Kingdom of Fife, the palace is a stunning example of Renaissance architecture. Parts date from the reigns of James IV and James V between 1501 and 1541 and contain some of the most sumptuous rooms of their day. The palace is famous for its beautiful gardens and for the royal tennis court, built in 1539 and still hosting international championships.
Gladstone’s Land was the home of a prosperous merchant in the 17th century. It is authentically decorated and furnished to evoke Edinburgh’s Old Town nearly 400 years ago and visitors can admire remarkable painted ceilings, reconstructed shop booth and a fine collection of period furniture.
