Development Director Job Description The Southern Oregon Land Conservancy, based in Ashland, Oregon, seeks a Development Director to join its leadership team and help grow and guide the organization. The Development Director is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program, with a special emphasis on major and planned gifts from individuals, private/family foundations and corporations. The Development Director also raises funds through membership gifts, special appeals, annual campaigns and special events. The Development Director must be highly organized and experienced in fundraising and developing and maintaining personal relationships with individuals, businesses and foundations. The Development Director works closely with and reports directly to the Executive Director.

Core Accountabilities Leadership 

Work collaboratively with the Executive Director, Board and a committed staff to deliver on the strategic goals of the organization



Represent the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy in a wide range of public forums and partnerships



Understand fundraising best practices and monitor trends, issues, and regulations that affect fundraising.

Planning 

Implementation of the organization’s fundraising plan to achieve targeted goals and increase overall giving to the SOLC




Work with Executive Director, Board and Development Committee to establish future fundraising goals, objectives and strategies



Work with Executive Director, Board and Development Committee to develop plans for special purpose multi-year fundraising campaigns



Research and support best practices in all aspects of staff and board fundraising

Individual Donor Program 

Implement a giving program that generates a minimum of $300,000 per year



Increase the membership base 20% each year



Establish systems and creative strategies for donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, tracking, acknowledgement, recognition, events, and donor stewardship



Motivate, train, support, and coordinate the Executive Director, Board members and volunteers as effective fundraisers



Personally manage and solicit a portfolio of prospective major donors



Develop and implement a Planned Giving program



Design and implement innovative strategies to raise money through annual appeals and special campaigns



Ensure the timely and accurate processing of gifts and acknowledgements



Provide staff support and direction to the Development Committee



Manage the donor data base



Prepare budgets and annual plan and produce quality financial reports

Foundation and Government Grants 

Research and identify potential grant opportunities for the organization and write grants as requested

Events and Marketing 

Coordinate and oversee all special fundraising events to generate annual net revenue of at least $50,000



Build positive relationships with all types of community partners, supporters, donors, media, and other stakeholders.

Experience Requirements and Competencies 

Solid relationship based fundraising experience, with proven success in the areas of individual and planned giving



Demonstrated ability to build, expand, and manage a development program responsible for $500,000 to $750,000 annually



Success in building strong foundation and corporate partnerships



Have a strong public presence – articulate, optimistic and energetic – with the ability to motivate and inspire people at all levels



Experience managing and motivating boards and volunteers for fundraising initiatives



Experience leading and managing people and working in a team based environment



Outstanding interpersonal communication skills



Experience with donor database software (DonorPerfect highly desirable) and proficiency with MS Office, including PowerPoint and Excel



Strong financial skills, including the ability to integrate fund raising into the broader operational finance management; develop management reports that present a clear financial picture of fundraising activities; budgeting



Process Management - Good at figuring out the processes necessary to get things done; knows how to organize people and activities; understands how to separate and combine tasks into efficient work flow; knows what to measure and how to measure it; can see opportunities for synergy and integration



Written and Verbal Communications - Is able to write and speak clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles; can get messages across that have the desired effect
