Old Town Times Volume 8, Issue 2
By Kids For Kids!
By: Christopher L. It was cool and windy on Veterans Day at Old Town. We all gathered around the blacktop while the some of the Cub Scouts lead the flag ceremony. After the pledge we invited soldiers to come to the center of the blacktop. Dads and grandparents who served us in the past came, too. We honored them by singing songs, and reading poems, and thanking them. If you are reading this, and you don’t know what Veterans Day is, or you want to know more, please read on. Veteran’s Day is about honoring retired soldiers that have help fight to protect our nation. Veterans have either retired because they have done their duty, or because they can’t fight anymore. Veteran’s Day is all about remembering those brave soldiers who have served in the army to protect us from other dangerous countries, and have helped other countries fight for freedom. The first Veteran’s Day (then called Armistice Day) was held one year after the end of World War I.
Character Dress up Day By: Caitlin L. and Laura H.
What is character dress up day? It is a day where we have a big, huge, humongous parade that shows our favorite story book character. We go to the hallway and watch kindergarteners walk in the parade. One of the most common costumes for character dress up day this year were Fancy Nancy or one of the Disney princesses (for the girls), or a super hero (for the boys). The kindergarten teachers dressed up like characters from, Where the Wild Things Are. But the youngest Texans weren’t the only ones having fun. Pictured here are 4th graders, Little Red Riding Hood and the Big, Bad Wolf . I can’t wait until next year’s character dress up day!
What`s Cookin’ in the Old Town Café? By: Ally K. and Brooke M.
Do you know different grade levels have different ice cream days? Now 1st graders have ice cream days on Mondays and 2nd graders have ice cream days on Tuesdays. Also, do you know about the reserved table on the stage? Everyone will get a chance to sit at the reserved table (hopefully). Remember to put your first name and last name on the clipboard so they know who has been up there or not .Do you know about the red tickets in the lunch room? If your class gets the most stamps in your grade level, you’ll win lunch with Mrs. Oliver. So during lunch if you get a red ticket, ask a lunch lady to go and look at the wall. If you find two red tickets that are yours, you can get a prize. They do this to reward kids that are doing an outstanding job. They will be giving red tickets out all year. They will be doing all these excellent things throughout the year!!! So always be on your best behavior in the cafeteria. Dear Shirley, My friends keep leaving me out of their conversations. It is as if I am not important enough to hear. I am afraid that they might be talking about me. What do I do? Leftout
Dear Leftout, You should point this out. Tell them you are a person and you would like to be treated like one. Everyone is important. They should let you in too. You’re their friend also. If they are talking about you then tell a teacher. They don’t usually allow gossip. It is one of the ways to bully. Hope it works. E> Shirley <3 Safety tips: If You See a Wild Dog.
The School Store BY: JAKE W.
The Student Council is opening the School Store once again. It will be open on Thursdays from 7:20 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. on the stage. The money that they earn will support projects to make our school even more awesome. Mr. McConnell and Mrs. Hillerich are running it, along with parent volunteers. I know some people that work at it like Braeden, Sarah, AND MANY other hard working STUDENT COUNCIL members! There are mechanical pencils, mini staplers, highlighters, pens and much more, (but they don’t have the scented markers). COME DOWN TO THE SCHOOL STORE AND BUY (please)!!!
By: Jake W. If you see one far away you… 1. Don’t run away 2. Don’t walk back 3. If they see you, slowly back away 4. If you know the dog, tell a parent 5. Just stay calm 6. If you get bit, try to remember what the dog looked like and tell it to the animal control. P.S. I got bit by one, IN THE EYE! So be careful!

Council Collective By: Roma V.
Student Council has had elections for office. We had five positions. Vice president and president are very selfexplanatory. The secretary takes minutes (we never want to forget what we’ve talked about), and supervises recycling. Historian 1 takes pictures and works on videos. Historian 2 takes pictures and works on the Student Council part of the year book. The historians work together to make an awesome Student Council scrapbook. Now here are the winners: President: Roma V. Vice President: Peyton W. Secretary: Alex Q. Historian 1: Meghan B. Historian 2: Sammi M. If you see any of these people in the hallway congratulate them. Student Council is trying their best to help our school be the best it can be.

Meghan Danahey’s Visit By: Caitlin L.and Maison K.
Meghan Danahey visited Old Town Elementary for the 2nd time. She is a meteorologist from channel 3 at 3:00 in the morning on KVUE News. She talked about her job and what it’s like being on TV, when she visited our school. Meghan also talked to us about weather in the U.S.A. She only wears dark clothes because there is a GREEN screen behind her. When she wears GREEN the part where she is wearing GREEN disappears! Meghan Danahey is a good meteorologist and is often right in her forecasts. She said that she does the weather estimations every single day. Her job is very important because she can warn people when dangerous weather is approaching and this information may even save their lives.
The History of Thanksgiving By: Travis M.
Thanksgiving is coming! Did you know that the first Thanksgiving was in the 1620’s? That’s when the Pilgrims came to America. A Wampanoag Indian named Squanto, helped the Pilgrims grow corn; learn how to fish, and a lot of other things. The Pilgrims thanked the Wampanoag Indians, by having a big feast. The Pilgrims brought turkey, lobster, and goose and the Wampanoags brought deer and fish. Thanksgiving was created to give thanks, because the Pilgrims wanted to thank the Wampanoags for their help in surviving the winter.

The Found Time Machine Experience By: Ashley H.
It was an ordinary Tuesday night when our own librarian, Mrs. Thrift invited us to come to the school at 6:15 pm. It was all very mysterious. Earlier in the day our class received a note saying “you are one of the missing”. If we wanted to find out more, we should show up at school that evening. People started arriving around 6:00 FOR THE EVENT. It was held in the cafeteria. Our mission was to make a time machine with a place to sit, emergency kit, and something to make it pop. All of the kids were sorted into groups. People had to reach into a box with a number. Whatever number you got, was the team you were a part of. Every group got a box, bubble wrap, fabrics, a marker, scissors, crayons, and an egg carton. We were told we only had 20 minutes to complete our time machine. We needed to work together and work fast. When the time was up, 2 people from each team went onto the stage and explained their project. Mrs. Mercer was our judge, and she thought everyone was a winner. We were all tied. One thing is for sure, everyone had a good time.
The Awesome Spectacular Teacher By: Maison K. The teacher we`re talking about today is Mr. McConnell. I have had him for 2 years because he moved up to 4th grade. Mr. McConnell moved up from the 3rd grade because he wanted a new challenge, wanted something different and taught 3rd grade for 5 years and is now moving on. Mr. McConnell has been a nice teacher for the past few years. He does really well at his job, (being a teacher). Being a teacher is hard work because you have to do a lot of grading and make a lot of copies for the children. This year and last year I have been a really good student for him. In Mr. McConnell`s class we have a great time because we do fun games and have a great time learning all kinds of things! There is nothing bad about Mr. McConnell, because he does nothing bad at his job.
