Jim and Betty Foster named grand marshals Jim & Betty are a community minded couple who met and married in 1959 and moved to Lake Stevens where they raised their two sons Vern and Rick. They pastored churches in Eastern Washington for about 15 years, and then returned to Lake Stevens in 1990. They stay involved in the community by managing the Lake Stevens Food Bank, volunteering at Aquafest (Betty has been a Miss Aquafest pageant judge for the past three years) and other community events, and working part time at Foster Press. Jim and Betty have always had a strong sense of community involvement and have passed that tradition on to their children and grandchildren.

run mostly according to U.S. Tennis Association rules with some adjustments as the tournament is targeted for the less serious player. “That’s not to say that we don’t have some serious tournament players entering,” said Brady. “Only that it’s not a USTA sanctioned event which means you don’t have to be extremely formal. We get a lot of kids from the local high school teams entering the events which is great.” The tournament offers a double elimination format with trophies for the winners. All proceeds from the tournament are donated to the LSHS Girls and Boys Tennis programs.

The race will take place on Sunday, July 31 and includes a 150-yard swim, five-mile bike ride, three-mile run, and one-mile paddle-boat race.

Children’s parade The Children’s Parade, sponsored by BECU, is the kick-off event on Friday night, July 29, and is expected to attract hundreds of kids and parents. Families, church groups, preschools, pets, bikes, scooters, wagons and small motorized vehicles are all welcome to participate. Participants are encouraged to dress and decorate with this year’s theme “The Spirit of Lake Stevens”. Each participant will receive a carnival ticket that is good for one ride, candy and a popsicle donated by Jay’s market. Registration forms for the Children’s Parade are available at City Hall, Lake Stevens

Journal, Foster Press and the Lake Stevens Library. Pre-registration is strongly recommended but you can also register at the parade. All pre-registered children will receive a “Purple Pom Pom.” Staging for the Children’s Parade begins at 5 p.m. on Friday in the triangle in front of the Fire Hall at Hartford and Grade Road. Parade begins at 6 p.m. and proceeds down Main Street to 18th Street, East on 18th to 125th, North on 125th ending on 20th Street NE. Popsicles will be handed out at the end of the parade.

Boat parade Folks can take the parade to the water with the annual boat parade. Snohomish Valley Roofing, Inc. and SVR Construction Services are proud to sponsor the 2011 Aquafest Boat Parade on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 6:45 p.m. off of the Wyatt Park/Davies Beach public dock. Participants are encouraged to decorate their boats using the Aquafest theme.

Bring treats to toss at the local docks as you tour Lake Stevens or participate from any private or public dock from Wyatt/Davies beach to The Cove. It is recommended that family boats stay to the front of the parade, near the fire boat, and “water-fun” seeking crafts stay to the rear. All boat safety requirements will apply and the parade will be monitored by the Lake Stevens Police Department.

Fireworks show Port Gardner Fireworks puts on a great show at Aquafest each year, gathering a large crowd to watch the display. The fireworks show begins at about 10 p.m. on Saturday night, July 30 and is always a spectacular sight. Bring a blanket and lawn chairs down to North Cove Park for the best viewing, or catch the show from just about any vantage point around the lake. Colorful explosions will light up the night sky over the lake for a 10 to 15 minute show. The fireworks are set off from a dock towed out into the cove from the Lake

Stevens boat launch. You can also watch the fireworks from your boat, but for your safety and that of the fireworks technicians, please maintain a 500 foot clearance from the fireworks dock, a rule that is enforced by the Lake Stevens Police, Sheriff’s Dept. and Coast Guard. The fireworks are sponsored by Tom Thumb Grocery and Pioneer Square 76 station.

Take a seat at North Cove park to watch the show

Port Gardner Fireworks has 20 years of pyrotechnic experience, is locally family owned and operated and has been a part of the Aquafest tradition for years.
