When the ‘for sale’ sign first went up at 2100 James Avenue, our first interest was just in seeing this historic house and its distinctive view of the Lake, something that was never really available from friendly peeks over the sidewalk gate. But once we visited the property for the very first time, we became excited about creating and restoring the landscape to be a garden on the level that the original owners, the Schutt Family, had created and shared with the community. In fact, we heard stories from many of the long term neighbors about the incredible gardens that Mrs. Schutt and her daughter developed on the property. continued...

Tom and I spent admiring many of the incredible gardens in this immediate neighborhood as well as small gardens published from homes across the nation. It was Tom’s idea to create a winding, wooded walkway that would reveal both the Lake and the inner perennial gardens further down the path. We ‘penciled in’ the perennials according to textures, color and blooming periods so that there would always be a movement of peak blooming periods to the eye. We worked with Michael Saphir of Sticks and Stones Design in Linden Hills to design and construct the walkways and retaining walls, as well as the antique fountains and laying the right soil. Tom and I did all the plantings ourselves over many weekends. “A number of people would just walk onto the property while we were working and assume that we were a work crew. More than once someone would announce themselves to us by saying ‘We know the owners’! It was pretty hilarious, but we loved that people wanted to enjoy the property as much as we do,” said Mark. “As everyone knows, a garden is never complete, and although we are in our third Summer season, we are still creating and coaxing the garden to be the one we first imagined” said Tom. The two are still moving plant beds, adding trees here and there, and figuring out what to do with the bluff hillside. “Just come back and I promise you it will continue to change.” “We are so lucky to live in this neighborhood, so close to downtown, where you can feel like you are lost on a lake up north” added Mark. “And we are lucky to have our time with this amazing space that the original family first created.”

November Lake of the Isles Living

“Blue Zones” are geographical areas where people live exponentially longer and sustain a healthier existence than anywhere else in the world. Dan Buettner, Lake of the Isles resident, has been studying these five regions for 15 years. Since 2009 he’s implemented what he’s learned in 26 cities across the United States. “I’ve been a lifelong explorer,” Dan explained, “I segued this passion into scientific expeditions we called ‘Quests’ where, with teams of experts and an online audience, we solved health-related mysteries.” In 2000 Dan’s adventures led him to Okinawa, Japan where the World Health Organization found it had the healthiest life expectancy in the world, and he thought, “There’s a good mystery.” This began a different type of quest for Dan; discovering how residents of these regions lived long, healthy lifestyles. Along with Okinawa, the five blue zones include a remote region of Costa Rica, islands in Italy and Greece, and Loma Linda, California. The first city chosen to pilot an American Blue Zone program was Albert Lea, Minnesota. “The idea is not to convince people to adopt the Blue Zone lifestyle by changing their behaviors, but instead change their environment so the healthy choice is the easy choice, and sometimes entirely unavoidable.” “I believe Lake of the Isles is a Blue Zone,” Dan declared. “It’s consummately walkable, there’s easy access to nature, plant-based foods are readily available, and people know their neighbors - we get together for happyhour wine at five.” Want to learn more about Blue Zones and implementing this longevity lifestyle? Dan has authored two New York Times Bestsellers: The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longevity and Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way. Also learn more about Dan at www.bluezones.com.

Blake senior, Duncan Werling’s typical day of training starts and ends at 6:00. He can be found doing pre-sunrise workouts at FIT Studios before he heads off to school. Shortly after the 3:00 p.m. dismissal, he heads over to North St. Paul for his daily hour and a half soccer practice, where he makes sure to try and squeeze an extra training session in after. His long day concludes with dinner and walking his dogs, Stripe and Oden, while catching up with his family and friends. The dedicated athlete used to play as a midfielder and claims he was “never very good” until he switched to goalie his freshmen year, and that’s when everything changed. “I just devoted all of my time basically trying to see how good I could get and maybe find my ceiling.” Duncan sure did find his ceiling this past summer when he committed as a goalie to UCLA, currently ranked number one in men’s Division One soccer. He is proud to be the “first kid in Minnesota history to earn a spot on their roster and the first without being on the national team. ” Duncan works with equal rigor in the classroom as on the field. When asked what he’s most excited for about his future at UCLA he responded, “I’m really excited about not necessarily the athletics because I know what that’s going to feel like, but the academic support that I will be provided just by going to a very big school with few student athletes is going to help me because it’s going to provide structure outside of high school in a college environment where I think I’ll be able to achieve better academically just because I’ll have that safety net built in.” Watch for this talented athlete and scholar when he makes his debut for the Bruins in the fall of 2016.

“You can’t live here and not be thankful for the incredible parks and amenities that we have in Minneapolis,” said Mark. “Part of the reason we wanted to restore the house and gardens was to use our home as a setting to help raise awareness, support and funds for organizations we care deeply about”. The two host about 5-6 fundraisers annually and pick organizations that have a meaningful impact in this and other communities. homas McClain is the creative mind behind Grow, a complete design and landscape company enhancing both home and business properties. Thomas developed his love of gardening at an early age. “My grandmother had a very nice English border garden and would send plants home with me,” he shared. “In my pre-teen years, she taught me how to divide large plants into smaller plants so I could propagate them and she taught me to prune by hand.” Thomas, who has a natural gift for art and design, began landscaping to combine his hobbies into a passionate vocation. “I am really drawn to aesthetics, and love working with clients designing projects that enhance their properties. It is a joy to and work with them to bring their personal style to fruition.”

Many of Grow’s projects are in the Lake of the Isles. “Many of my designs are colorful perennial gardens, which can be a challenge. We want to make sure that there are plants blooming at all times of the year; we work with clients to ensure that there is a harmonization of contrasting textures and colors,” said Thomas. During his seven years of project management experience, Thomas has developed strong partnerships with concrete, stone masonry, and carpentry companies sub-contracting their services to enhance his designs. “We work on both big and small projects; anything from rain gardens, front yard make-overs, swimming pools to potted annuals.” To view Grow’s portfolio and services visit www.growwithdesign.com.

Nineteen-year-old Moe has outlived his allotted nine lives. This remarkable Maine Coon mix spends most of his time outdoors and has survived many scrapes, including once when he impaled his tongue on one of his fangs (probably from biting his tongue while falling). He is sweet and gentle and beloved by all, especially 3-year-old Charlotte next door. His owners are the Fitzpatrick family. Note: Moe died peacefully at home shortly after this picture was taken. He died in his sleep in his favorite spot under a bench on our deck.

interest The Suttons have lived in the Lake of the Isles area for the past 16 years. Their favorite part about the community is spending time with their neighbors who love being outside as much as they do. If you’re a frequent visitor around the lakes, chances are you’ve seen one of the three sons zipping by on a skateboard with their beloved dog, Bella, chasing along. Walking the dog is the job of the boys, who have taken it upon themselves to combine the task with skateboarding. The combination of the two has made it more fun for the boys and made Bella a happy pup. “If you want to feel loved, stop to pet Bella when you see her,” Dan Sutton, father of the family says. The Wheaton terrier is an important part of their family who is more interested in visiting with neighbors than other dogs. Next time you see the dog walking, skateboarding duo, be sure to give a wave and Bella a pat.

lizabeth C. Quinlan, the co-founder of Young-Quinlan Department store, the first ready-to-wear women's clothing store west of the Mississippi had an affinity for high design beyond clothing. In 1923, Ms. Quinlan commissioned architect Frederick Lee Ackerman to design a home similar to the 16 century villas she had seen while traveling through Florence, Italy.

The home, located in Lowry Hill was built in the Renaissance Revival style and became an architectural prototype for the Young-Quinlan Department Store located on 9th and Nicollet in downtown Minneapolis also designed by Ackerman. Ms. Quinlan along with her sister, Annie, lived in the home from the time it was completed in 1925 until her death in 1947. Now a private residence, the home was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in July 2012.
