THIS MONTH’S THEME, Making Her-Story, feels especially close to my heart. In this issue, we feature women from the Lake Norman area sharing the women who inspire them. And as I reflected on that question myself, one name rose to the top immediately, my maternal grandmother, Barbara Spainhour. We simply called her Grandma.
So much of what we do at Lake Norman Woman traces back to her. Our “Ladies Who Lunch” events? That was Grandma. No matter what was happening in life, she made time each week to sit down with her girlfriends. Lunch wasn’t optional, it was sacred. Connection mattered.

Our Mahjong night last month? Also Grandma. She never missed bridge night. Ever. My grandmother was an only child, so her friends became her sisters. She built her own circle, intentionally and faithfully, and she showed me that friendship isn’t something you stumble into, it’s something you nurture.
So many of us move to the Lake Norman area for work, family, or simply because it’s a beautiful place to live. But starting somewhere new means building community from scratch. It can feel lonely at first. Walking into an event alone takes courage. I see it every time … a woman stepping through the door by herself, hoping to find her people.
And I love that.
Because whether it’s through this magazine, the Lake Norman Woman Podcast, or one of our events, this is why we exist. To create space for connection. To help you find your sisters. To remind you that you don’t have to do life alone.
If you’re searching for community, you are welcome here.
We are your community. w

CELEBRATING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH: Local Women Making Lasting Impacts
FEATURE STORY: A Place Where Confidence Grows 20 26
pg LOCAL WOMEN MAKING LASTING IMPACTS 46

FEATURE STORY: Local Girl Scouts Take The Silver COVER STORY: Restoring Trust IN HIS OWN WORDS: Shane Pursifull

In recognition of International Women’s Day, we shine a light this March on local women whose passion, perseverance, and compassion enrich our communities. Their influence reminds us that inspiration is often found not in grand gestures, but in everyday acts of service, leadership, and love. We are grateful for the many thoughtful submissions from our readers and honored to feature just a few of them here. w
A devoted wife, mother, teacher, coach, and worship leader, JENNIFER QUICK has long been a steady source of encouragement to those around her. She and her husband, Brian, recently celebrated 12 years of marriage and are raising their two sons, Cooper and Beckett, with intention and love. At Lake Norman High School, Jennifer is known not only as a passionate math teacher and varsity swim and dive head coach, but as someone who recognizes possibility in every student and challenges them to believe in themselves — in the classroom, on the pool deck, and beyond. In recent weeks, Jennifer faced one of her most difficult chapters after being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing surgery. What followed was an inspiring recovery shaped by faith, determination, and an outpouring of care from those around her. “This journey reminded me how precious life is and how powerful hope and prayer can be,” Jennifer shares. “I felt lifted up every step of the way.” Even during her healing process, Jennifer continued giving back. She remains head coach of the Winslow Bay Wahoos in the Lake Norman Swim League and leads worship at The Cove Church alongside her husband, who plays drums. “Whether I’m teaching, coaching, or worshiping, I want people to feel valued and encouraged,” she says. Jennifer believes this season has sharpened her sense of purpose, reminding us that true resilience is revealed not only in victories, but in the kindness and compassion we offer one another along the way.

Through her nonprofit, Bags of Hope, NICOLE FIEHLER ensures that hundreds of students each week have access to weekend meals, helping children in Lake Norman and beyond face food insecurity with stability and confidence. She provides comfort, support, and hope to families navigating challenging circumstances. Nicole’s dedication shows how one person’s vision and persistence can make a big difference—inspiring others, strengthening resilience, and creating brighter possibilities for children who need it most.

A beacon of hope and action, DIANA SPRADLEY channels her energy into serving those most in need. From combating human trafficking to leading jail and homeless ministries and supporting international missions, she pours herself fully into making a difference. Diana’s relentless commitment inspires those around her to act with courage, live intentionally, and recognize that each effort, big or small, can transform lives and strengthen the bonds of community.

An dre a Sm i th
PASTOR ANDREA SMITH lives her life with vision, boldness, and unwavering integrity. Thinking creatively and acting with intention, she places ministry at the heart of her work. Her presence reassures and empowers, making everyone she encounters feel acknowledged and valued. Andrea’s fearless approach to leadership reminds us that true influence comes from opening spaces for others to flourish and creating a community where everyone is welcomed and supported.
CORAL RILEY exemplifies resilience and generosity in everything she does. By day she teaches; by night she juggles two businesses while working tirelessly to provide safe, affordable housing for homeless individuals and veterans. A single mother, she navigates life’s demands with grit and determination, proving that strength is measured by the ways we lift others. Coral’s example shows that everyday heroes don’t just inspire, they create lasting change in the communities they touch.
JAMEKA HAYNES is a connector in the Lake Norman area known for bringing people together with grace, courage, and compassion. Through her organization BOLD, her work with Crosby Scholars mentoring youth, and her involvement with local groups such as the Iredell Health Foundation, she embodies the power of uniting people across differences. Believing that real change comes through listening and connection, Jameka reminds us that progress is built together—one conversation, one act of kindness, and one brave step at a time.

SPRING IS THE SEASON OF FRESH STARTS, making it the perfect time to finally tackle that Honey-Do List. Instead of letting it grow into an overwhelming weekend marathon, try a “His & Hers” approach that balances home maintenance and deep cleaning. Dividing responsibilities helps every part of the house feel renewed and keeps projects from piling up. w
Spring is ideal for handling home repairs that go beyond quick fixes. These projects improve safety, prevent costly damage, and extend the life of your home.
Replace damaged or rotting exterior trim and woodwork.
Repair or re-secure loose railings, steps, and deck boards.
Re-caulk bathrooms, kitchens, and exterior windows to prevent moisture intrusion.
Patch drywall and repaint larger problem areas, especially where water stains or cracks appear.
Install or replace ceiling fans and light fixtures.
Repair damaged fences, gates, or shed doors.
Inspect attic access points and crawl spaces for signs of leaks or pests.
Realign sticking doors and windows caused by seasonal shifting.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up, it’s about resetting the home for a lighter, brighter season.
Declutter one room at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Deep clean kitchens and bathrooms, focusing on grout, cabinets, and appliances.
Wash windows and wipe down blinds, ceiling fans, and baseboards.
Rotate seasonal clothing and donate unused items.
Clean and refresh soft surfaces like throw pillows, rugs, and curtains.
Organize pantry shelves and label containers for easy access.

When repair and cleaning tasks work together, the results are more dramatic and long-lasting. Fresh paint looks better in a dust-free room. Repaired doors and railings feel safer after a deep clean. Each list supports the other.
Create a shared checklist and spread tasks over several weekends.
Prioritize safety-related repairs first.
Set a reward once the list is complete like a backyard BBQ or weekend getaway.

AS TEMPERATURES FINALLY BEGIN TO WARM, many of us feel a natural pull to refresh our homes, our routines, and ourselves. Just as gardens awaken after winter, your body is also primed for renewal. One of the most powerful places to begin is within, starting with your gut.
Inside your digestive tract lives a vast ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms known as the gut microbiome. These microscopic allies are far from something to eliminate; they are essential partners in health. They influence digestion, immune function, inflammation, hormone balance, mood, energy levels, and even how your body manages weight.
Think of your microbiome as an internal garden. When it is diverse and wellnourished, it thrives, helping you break down food, absorb nutrients, and create beneficial compounds like short-chain fatty acids and key vitamins. When
balance is disrupted, symptoms may show up as bloating, irregular digestion, food sensitivities, fatigue, brain fog, skin concerns, or persistent inflammation.
For many women balancing family, work, caregiving, and community life, stress and full schedules can quietly affect this internal ecosystem. Poor sleep, chronic stress, processed foods, and repeated antibiotic exposure can all influence gut balance. In functional and integrative care, the gut is not viewed in isolation, but as part of a deeply interconnected system—linked to hormones, immunity, metabolism, and the nervous system.
Spring offers a natural invitation to restore that balance. A fiber-rich diet filled with colorful vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and seeds nourishes beneficial bacteria. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and unsweetened yogurt gently reintroduce supportive microbes. Reducing added sugars and ultraprocessed foods helps create space for resilience to return.
Beyond nutrition, daily rhythms matter. Prioritizing restorative sleep, managing stress through mindful movement or time outdoors, and maintaining regular physical activity all signal safety to the nervous system, allowing the gut and body to recalibrate together.
When this internal harmony is supported, many women notice benefits that extend well beyond digestion: steadier energy, clearer thinking, improved skin, stronger immunity, and a deeper sense of vitality.
We believe that people thrive when they are truly seen, heard, and supported as whole individuals. Our approach is centered on listening closely, connecting the dots, and honoring the body’s innate capacity to heal, blending both ancient and modern medicine alike. Whether someone is seeking digestive support, hormone balance, stress resilience, or preventative care, the intention remains the same—to help patients feel well, supported, and empowered in their health journey.

This spring, as the world around you blooms, remember that renewal begins within. Tend your inner garden with intention, and you’ll be planting seeds for lasting wellbeing season after season. w

energy efficiency, and curb appeal more than windows and doors. They influence everything from insulation and security to natural light and overall style, yet they’re often overlooked until a problem arises. Knowing when and how to upgrade these essential features can make a significant difference in both the performance and beauty of your home. With careful planning and professional guidance, window and door improvements become a smart investment rather than a stressful renovation. Here are key considerations to guide your window and door decisions this spring:
Mild temperatures make installation easier and less disruptive.
Energy savings can be realized before the heat of summer arrives.
Natural light highlights problem areas such as drafts, condensation, or warped frames.
Prioritize high-impact areas such as front entry doors or large window groupings.
Consider phased upgrades instead of replacing everything at once.
Balance initial cost with long-term savings through efficiency and durability.
Rising energy bills
Drafts or temperature fluctuations
Difficulty opening or closing windows or doors
Condensation between glass panes
Visible frame damage or rot
Energy efficiency:
Seek products with highperformance glass and proper insulation ratings to reduce heating and cooling costs.
Durability: Materials like fiberglass, composite, or highgrade vinyl offer longevity with low maintenance.
Design compatibility: Windows and doors should complement your home’s architectural style while enhancing overall aesthetics.
Ensure proper water sealing and insulation for every window and door.
Measure each opening precisely for a custom fit.
Choose installers who offer warranties and post-installation support.
Modern windows and doors can transform how a home feels. Larger panes invite natural light, sliding doors enhance indoor-outdoor living, and upgraded entry doors improve both security and first impressions. Spring projects should be about more than repair—they should elevate everyday living. By choosing the right products and experienced professionals, homeowners can create spaces that are brighter, quieter, and more energy-efficient for years to come.
WHEN BUILDING OR REMODELING a home, few decisions are as impactful as selecting the right windows and doors. They shape not only how a home looks but how it feels—how light enters a room, how energy is conserved, and how seamlessly indoor and outdoor living connect. It’s one of those choices where craftsmanship and guidance truly matter.

That’s where Window and Door Pros stands apart. Rather than simply selling products, their team focuses on building trust and long-term relationships with homeowners. From the first consultation, they take time to listen, offering thoughtful recommendations that balance design vision, quality, and budget. Their approach transforms what can be an overwhelming process into a collaborative experience rooted in expertise and care.
What makes their work exceptional is their commitment to detail. Design adjustments are met with precision, ensuring every element aligns with the homeowner’s goals without sacrificing value. The result is a finished product that feels elevated, often rivaling projects with much higher price tags.
In the end, it’s not just about windows and doors. It’s about creating spaces that feel intentional, beautiful, and built to last. For anyone embarking on a remodel or new build, working with a team that prioritizes both craftsmanship and connection makes all the difference. w

We all have moments when the mirror feels unfamiliar. Confidence wavers, and the way we carry ourselves begins to change. Hair loss can be one of those defining shifts. For Debby Long, President of Lake Norman Hair Loss Solutions in Mooresville, restoring that sense of recognition has been her calling—helping people return to a reflection that feels honest, familiar, and fully their own.
BORN AND RAISED in Sacramento, California, Debby’s fascination with hair began in the salon chair beside her mother. “When I was a teenager,” she recalls, “I always enjoyed going to the hair salon with my mom.”
That early spark led her to her high school ROP Cosmetology program, earning her professional license at just 18. But it was her own struggle with hair loss in her early 20s that shaped her true mission. “At the time, hair loss solutions for women were extremely limited,” she says. “That inspired me to start my business in 1999 and ultimately become a master stylist, hair replacement designer, and alternative hair industry educator.”
Today, Debby and her husband Gary, who also works in the business, have helped thousands of men and women regain confidence with stateof-the-art non-surgical hair
"age, gender, or social status. Resolving someone’s hair loss issue is truly the most rewarding aspect of my job,” she smiles. “For our guests who have sometimes hidden their hair loss for years, the transformation can feel almost like reclaiming a piece of themselves.”
Outside the office, Debby keeps her own life balanced and joyful. Monthly spa days, true crime novels, bingewatching a favorite TV series with Gary, and playing with their rescue dog Honeybear help her recharge. “A loving pet is good for the soul,” she says. “Travel also is a must for our wellbeing. Our 20th wedding anniversary in Hawaii was a lifelong dream, including swimming with dolphins. It was a truly magical experience!”
Life-changing events, from meeting Gary on a blind date 30 years ago to relocating 2,700 miles to North Carolina to open a second hair loss clinic, have shaped Debby’s resilience and perspective.
Every guest they meet becomes part of a space built on care, understanding, & compassion."

For Debby, Gary, and their team, the work has always been about more than hair, it’s about the person in the chair and how they feel about themselves. Every guest they meet becomes part of a space built on care, understanding, and compassion.
“We’ve lived it ourselves,” Debby says with empathy. “Our goal is simply to help
people feel seen and supported. Sometimes it’s a new look, sometimes it’s just a listening ear but either way, we want them to leave feeling stronger, more confident, and ready to step back into their lives with a renewed sense of self.”

March is a month full of celebration for Girl Scouts, marking both Girl Scouts Week and the organization’s birthday. Since 1912, when Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia, girls have been encouraged to explore new experiences, develop leadership skills, and make meaningful contributions to their communities. Over a century later, Girl Scouts continues to inspire girls to dream big, take initiative, and leave a positive mark on the world. March is the perfect time to honor those who are carrying that mission forward, and this year, three local girls are doing just that.

recently recognized Troop 3270 members Caroline K., Sophia B., and Zoe H. with the Girl Scout Silver Award—the highest honor a Cadette can earn. The Silver Award highlights the girls’ achievements in Girl Scouting and their dedication to bettering their community. By earning this award, Caroline, Sophia, and Zoe have stepped into the role of young leaders, showing courage, creativity, and a commitment to making a difference.
Their project focused on creating a Kids’ Corner for Heartstrings Therapeutic Music and Art at Children’s Hope Alliance in Statesville. Heartstrings offers free educational, therapeutic, and experimental art and music classes to children in at-risk families, giving them a safe space to learn, grow, and express themselves. Caroline, Sophia, and Zoe collected more than 750 books, games, coloring books, and puzzles, and furnished the space

with rugs, bean bags, a small table and chairs, and bookcases, turning it into a cozy, inviting environment for kids of all ages. Many items were donated, and the girls raised most of the $1,400 project total by selling Girl Scout cookies—a sweet example of their dedication paying off.
Paula Miller, Heartstrings program manager, shared, “The space the Girl Scouts created has already provided kids and their siblings with fun ways to interact with others and entertain themselves. This has been a huge blessing to our families. Thank you, Caroline, Sophia, and Zoe, for your hard work in creating a space for them!”

Through their creativity, leadership, and generosity, Caroline, Sophia, and Zoe embody the very spirit of Girl Scouts. Their work reminds us that Girl Scouting isn’t just about badges and cookies; it’s about building confidence, making friends, and leaving a lasting, positive impact on the world. This March, as we celebrate the birthday of Girl Scouts, these young women shine as a perfect example of the next generation of leaders ready to make a difference. w

WHEW, WE MADE IT! March shines a light at the end of winter’s tunnel, and with spring’s arrival comes a welcome change of pace. As daffodils bloom and longer days invite us back into sunshine, the season calls us to savor the simple pleasures we’ve missed: live music under the stars, reconnecting with friends both old and new, and sharing food and drink that make this time of year feel truly special. Here are a few must-dos to add to your calendar:

As the days grow warmer, patios and open-air spaces become natural extensions of daily life—places to pause, sip, and reconnect. Fresh air and comfortable seating encourage visitors to stay a little longer, letting conversations unfold at an unhurried pace. Bottles and Taps captures that seasonal spirit perfectly with an outdoor space designed for easy gatherings and effortless enjoyment.
Community run and walk clubs continue to grow in popularity as people look for low-pressure ways to stay active. Welcoming all fitness levels and focusing on participation rather than competition, Bottles and Taps supports this trend through its BT Run/Walk Crew, a weekly gathering that combines movement with a social stop afterward, blending wellness with connection.

Spring evenings are made for music, laughter, and libations. From acoustic sets to full bands, local venues come alive with sound and energy—turning an ordinary night into something worth savoring. At Bottles and Taps, live music fills the air Thursday through Saturday, while rotating food trucks Tuesday through Saturday add flavor to every visit. It’s the winning recipe for date night, girls’ night, or anything in between.

Healthcare should feel like someone walking beside you, not handing you a map and wishing you luck. At its best, it is built on connection, trust, and the belief that no one should navigate illness alone. Yet too often, patients find themselves surrounded by information without feeling truly seen or heard.
fORTUNATELY, A NEW VISION OF CARE is taking shape. Enter Dr. Michelle Schmerge, founder of Equity Health (VIA Health Partners Company). As a nurse practitioner with a doctorate in Health Policy and Executive Leadership, Dr. Schmerge originally launched her practice to reshape how healthcare works. Rather than treating care as a collection of disconnected services, she integrates primary care, patient navigation, and future-focused planning into a single, accessible system—reducing emergency room visits, lowering hospitalization rates, and helping patients feel healthier, supported, and more confident in their care.
Today, Dr. Schmerge serves as Executive Vice President of Primary and Palliative Care for VIA Health Partners, the region’s largest nonprofit hospice. “By partnering with VIA,” she explains, “I am able to create a more comprehensive, longitudinal approach for seniors—one that guides them through every stage of their health journey. This model ensures continuous support, from chronic disease management to serious illness and, when needed, end-of-life care. I’m thrilled about this partnership. I don’t believe anywhere else in the nation is doing this kind of innovative work for our most vulnerable populations.”
When people feel genuinely cared for, outcomes change. The work Dr. Schmerge and her team do is as much about dignity as it is about diagnoses. Healing happens when science and compassion meet in the same room. Every decision they make is guided by one simple question: Is this going to improve their life?
Dr. Schmerge witnessed this patient-centered care firsthand early in her life—an experience that would shape her calling. “When I was a little girl,” she shares, “I always knew I wanted to care for older people. My paternal grandmother was an insulin-dependent diabetic, and I was inspired by watching her manage her own care. Years later, my maternal grandfather became ill, and I watched him slowly decline and eventually pass away during my freshman year of college. Along the way, I met so many incredible caregivers who left a lasting impression on me.”

Through years of learning and dedication, Dr. Schmerge has come to practice medicine with both skill and intention. In a world of constant demands and tight schedules, she has chosen a quieter way ... one built on listening, patience, and genuine regard for those she serves. Here, success is counted not only in outcomes, but in mindful moments of understanding.

“Looking forward,” she says, “I hope to continue building care that honors dignity and respects others. I want to expand access to primary and palliative services and help shape the future of senior medicine for generations to come.”

Balancing a demanding career with family life requires discipline and self-awareness. “I plan each day and look for efficiencies so I never miss family time. Sleep and exercise are essential to that balance. If you care for yourself, you can care for others. When evening arrives, I shift gears and shut off around 4 p.m. My husband laughs that I’m an extrovert during the day and an introvert at night, but it’s my way of decompressing. It allows me to be fully present for him and our children, Kellen and Anna.”
That same belief guides her work every day. For Dr. Schmerge, access means more than availability; it’s about meaningful relationships. When people feel understood and
supported, fear softens and healing begins. “I want everyone to feel safe, heard, and never alone,” she says.

Dr. Schmerge is reshaping what healthcare looks like, one patient at a time. Her work reflects a belief that extending life is only part of the mission; honoring it is the rest. That philosophy shows up in unhurried conversations, thoughtful guidance, and an approach to care that values understanding as much as expertise. In the end, her work offers a clear reminder: the most lasting progress in medicine begins with human connection. w

has been guided by a simple yet powerful mission: to preserve the gift of sight and improve lives—one patient at a time. What began as a commitment to delivering exceptional ophthalmic care across western North Carolina has grown into something even larger—a movement rooted in service, compassion, and community impact.
Today, Graystone Eye operates five locations—Hickory, Lenoir, Lincolnton, Boone, and North Wilkesboro—with its Retina Center marking continued expansion of advanced specialty care. Through a collaborative team of ophthalmologists, optometrists, and physician assistants, the practice provides comprehensive services ranging from routine eye care to complex surgical and retinal treatment. As the organization continues to grow and add physicians, it remains steadfast in its commitment not only to clinical excellence but also to service beyond its walls.
the philanthropic and outreach arm of the practice.
The organization recently formed its inaugural Community Advisory Board, bringing together civic, business, and healthcare leaders to strengthen partnerships, expand outreach efforts, and help guide long-term impact both locally and internationally.

That commitment extends far beyond the clinic through Graystone Eye Missions,

FROM RURAL COMMUNITIES IN BOLIVIA TO CHILDREN IN NORTH CAROLINA, GRAYSTONE EYE REMAINS COMMITTED TO ENSURING THAT ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY EYE CARE IS NEVER LIMITED BY GEOGRAPHY OR CIRCUMSTANCE.
That impact was clearly seen this past June when two Graystone Eye Missions teams traveled more than 3,500 miles to Bolivia, partnering with Consejo de Salud Rural Andino to provide care in rural communities. Over two weeks, the team cared for 510 patients and performed 108 sight-restoring surgeries— life-changing treatment for individuals who might otherwise go without access to care. Beyond the clinic, the team also visited local orphanages, providing essential supplies and meaningful human connection.
“One of the things that initially drew me to join Graystone Eye was the practice’s
longstanding commitment to international missions in Bolivia,” said Dr. Joshua Paschall, MD. “Restoring sight through surgery is always rewarding, but it is especially meaningful when patients who have nowhere else to turn can experience restored vision—and with it, renewed life.”
The mission is equally powerful close to home. Recently, Dr. Christopher Tanzie, MD, PhD, partnered with Catawba Valley Medical Center to restore sight for 9-year-old Jensy, who was living with congenital cataracts. Following surgery, she now sees the world clearly through her very first pair of glasses.
“In a very real and tangible way, we were able to change the trajectory of her entire life by giving her the gift of sight,” said Dr. Tanzie.

With Saint Patrick’s Day this month, these Irish Bangers and Mash are the perfect dinner for creating a festive meal at home. I love all types of cuisine, but March always calls for classic fare from Ireland. We recently visited a new-to-us Irish restaurant, and of course I had to order their Bangers and Mash for my first meal. It was so grand that I knew right away I had to try recreating it at home. My husband loved his fish and chips, so I’m thinking I’ll need to take a stab at those next—stay tuned! w

Across rural America, access to essential healthcare is increasingly fragile. Provider shortages, limited facilities, and reduced preventive care have created deep disparities in health outcomes. Chronic conditions go unmanaged, screenings are delayed, and prenatal care becomes harder to access. Families often travel long distances, miss work, and absorb costs many cannot afford. These barriers fall hardest on low-income families, minorities, and older adults— reinforcing cycles of poor health and economic instability.
Nowhere is this crisis more urgent than in maternal health.

We ALL Deserve
Labor and delivery units are lifelines, providing prenatal care, emergency obstetrics, postpartum support, and continuity of care for mothers and babies. Yet they are disappearing nationwide. As of December 2022, more than half of rural hospitals and over onethird of urban hospitals no longer offered obstetric services (Journal of the American Medical Association).
For rural families, this means longer travel during labor, higher risk of complications, and delayed care. Closures force families to seek care elsewhere, weakening both health outcomes and community stability. When a labor and delivery unit closes, it signals more than a service loss—it puts a community’s future at risk.
Lincolnton, North Carolina, is a close-knit community with deep roots and small-town pride. Like many rural areas, it has faced challenges recruiting and retaining providers.
Atrium Health Lincoln serves Lincolnton and surrounding counties with essential hospital services. Women’s Services, in particular, stood at a crossroads—until collaboration changed the trajectory.
One Health is an independent, physician-owned group focused on improving patient experience, population health, cost efficiency, provider wellness, and access for all.
I grew up in a small town in Southwest Virginia, in a community much like Lincolnton. I learned early that where a woman lives should never limit the care she receives. That belief has shaped my work as an OB/ GYN and One Health leader.
In early 2022, a breakfast conversation launched a clear mission: partner with Atrium Health to save—and transform—the Lincoln labor and delivery unit into a comprehensive Women’s Services program. Women in rural communities deserve the same level of care as those in major cities, without leaving their support systems.
My work at Atrium Health Lincoln began in 2021 through gynecologic surgery. The collaborative, mission-driven culture made growth possible.
By October 2023, when One Health assumed the Lincolnton office, the hospital averaged 25 deliveries per month. Fifteen months later, that number reached 80 deliveries per month—an increase of more than 200%.
With strong support from Atrium Health leadership, Levine Children’s pediatric services, and pharmacy partners, Women’s Services expanded well beyond deliveries.
A Level II NICU was opened, lowering gestational age care to 34 weeks and keeping more babies close to home. VBAC services were introduced. Blood bank capabilities expanded. Circumcision services were

added—strengthening safety and continuity of care.
Gynecologic services also grew, with increased operating room access at Atrium Health Lincoln and East Lincoln Surgery Center. Patients now receive modern, minimally invasive care locally—reducing the need to travel to Charlotte.
“Our strength lies in our culture—providers who support one another, hold themselves to the highest standards, and share deep responsibility for the women and families we serve.”
The impact reaches far beyond hospital walls:
• Safer pregnancies and healthier babies
• Stronger local economies
• Families staying rooted in their communities
• Greater trust in rural healthcare
Improving women’s health is an issue of equity and dignity. When women thrive, families thrive. When families thrive, communities grow stronger.
Saving Women’s Services in Lincolnton shows what is possible when independent physicians and hospital systems unite with shared purpose. Where a woman gives birth should never determine the quality of care she receives—and every community deserves a future worth staying for.
This is only the beginning. With One Health, the work continues: preserving and transforming rural healthcare, strengthening communities, and building systems that honor the people they serve.
“My work in rural healthcare is about more than preserving services—it is about strengthening communities, restoring trust, and building systems that honor the people they serve. Caring for all is the legacy I am building.”

WE’RE USUALLY ALL ABOUT HIGHLIGHTING WOMEN, BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN, WE PASS THE MIC.
In our column In His Own Words, we invite local men to share their stories, insights, and a bit of their personality. From doctors and dentists to entrepreneurs and realtors, these professionals are part of the fabric of our community—and they’ve got something to say. This month, meet Shane Pursifull of Leavitt Elite Insurance Advisors as he gives us a glimpse into his world.
“My favorite title is ‘Dad’ ... nothing has shaped me more than becoming a father. My family is my greatest inspiration. They are the joy that drives me. Outside of work, I love being outdoors with my kids golfing, fishing, and camping together. We spend a lot of time at our cabin near Boone. The quiet of the mountains gives us space to reset, reconnect, and remember what really matters.”
“Success is built through small, daily habits. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced was leaving behind a familiar career and community. Mentorship helped me navigate that uncertainty and taught me the value of patience and discipline. I’ve learned that timing is everything. Just like a crockpot meal can’t be rushed in an air fryer, some things in life take time to come together the right way.”

“I grew up in Ohio and moved to Nashville in 2003 to attend Belmont University, where I earned my degree in business administration. While working at Sony Music Nashville in 2009, I met my wife, Cassidy. I was in sales, and she was in marketing for the New York office covering the Nashville market. We were married in 2013, just weeks before I finished my MBA at Vanderbilt University. While I enjoyed the music business, I knew I wanted a career that better aligned with our longterm goals as we planned to start a family. That decision led me into the insurance industry, where I discovered a passion for leadership and sales. In 2015, we moved to Cornelius, where we’ve built our life together and raised our three children: Elle, Luke, and Autumn.”
“We’re there for people during some of the hardest moments of their lives, and that makes the work matter. Winning contests and accolades is great, but what fulfills me most is watching a team come together around a shared vision and purpose. Helping people grow personally and professionally is what makes this work meaningful to me. When a team believes in what they’re doing and supports one another, that’s when real success happens. I am grateful to be part of such a dedicated and compassionate work family.”
“I believe I’m never walking through life’s challenges alone. My faith keeps me grounded. It reminds me to trust God’s plan, even when I can’t see the path ahead, and to remain present, enjoy the journey, and keep showing up every day with purpose.” w

MARCH INVITES US TO CLEAR what feels stale and make space for what feels alive. While we often focus on spring cleaning our homes, our inner world deserves the same care. By gently tending to our mindfulness habits, we create room for clarity, lightness, and steady growth. This season, don’t aim to perfect your practice—simply tend it like the small, sacred garden it is.
Begin with five minutes of stillness each day. Close your eyes; sit, breathe, and be still. You don’t need a perfect setup or long session, just a daily habit. Over time, this small practice builds calm and awareness naturally.
Try a different form of meditation: guided journeys, breathwork, body awareness, or slow, mindful walks in nature. Variety keeps the spirit curious and the practice alive.
Let your pen become a broom for the mind. Each morning or evening, ask:
What am I ready to release today?
What am I willing to receive?
Choose a corner that feels peaceful. Add a candle, a living plant, or soft light. Invite the senses with awakening scents like citrus or eucalyptus. It signals to your brain that something new is beginning.

Turn everyday self-care into a simple routine. Pair face masks or herbal tea with five minutes of quiet reflection or soft music. Add gentle stretching or deep breathing while you unwind. Treat these moments as scheduled time for yourself.
Mindfulness does not live only in silence. It lives in everyday moments like a warm cup of tea held with both hands and a deep inhale. Step outside and intentionally notice three sounds and three colors; pause for three slow breaths before a difficult conversation or meeting.

LIKE A SEED
Choose one word for the season (such as peace, balance, or renewal) and write it on a notecard or save it as your phone wallpaper. When you feel rushed or overwhelmed, pause and ask, “Does this choice support my intention?” Let that word guide your actions throughout the day. w
