IN-CHIEF

MAY OFTEN SHINES A light on mothers, but this issue is for every woman who finds herself nurturing something or someone. For some, that looks like raising children. For others, it means caring for aging parents, showing up for friends, mentoring younger women, or loving a pet like family.

For me, part of that nurturing shows up in four furry paws named Layla.

We brought home Layla, our mini sheepadoodle, at the very beginning of the pandemic in 2020. At a time when the world felt uncertain, she quickly became the steady joy our family needed. She brought laughter, routine, sass, and a surprising amount of personality into our home. She still does.

knows. She’ll come sit beside me, rest her head in my lap, and stay there without asking for anything except to be near. There is comfort in that kind of quiet loyalty.

And science agrees that pets do more than make us smile. A 2024 survey found that 84% of pet owners say their pets have a positive impact on their mental health. Dogs especially are known to reduce stress, ease loneliness, and encourage us to slow down and be present.

Now that I’m an empty nester, her companionship means even more. On the days when I miss my daughter and the house feels too quiet, Layla somehow

That is why our May issue always makes room for Lake Norman’s cutest pets. Because nurturing takes many forms, and love often arrives covered in fur.

So whether you are a dog mom, cat mom, human mom, mentor, caregiver, or simply someone who pours love into the world around you, this issue is for you.

As Roger Caras said, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” w

LORI'S Cocoa & Norman

Cocoa, my sweet and spirited cockapoo, and Norman, my playful mini goldendoodle named after the beautiful Lake Norman itself, are the perfect duo for the Lake Norman Cutest Pets feature! These two furry friends are inseparable and absolutely adore everything about the lake — from splashing on a big float to boat rides on the lake.

Sylvie is a two-year-old Labrador with a heart of gold and the mischief level of a cartoon character. She “borrows” anything not nailed down and keeps the local wildlife on high alert. The squirrels probably swap stories about her like she’s an urban legend.

WHITNEY'S Bogey

Bogey is so handsome, funloving, and truly like a human. He loves every toy he’s ever given and he will bring you one every time he sees you.

Kona is a 3-year-old mini long-haired dachshund with a big personality packed into a small, fluffy body. Always on alert, he proudly takes his job as household protector very seriously— often announcing every passerby with enthusiastic barking. Beneath that toughguy attitude, though, Kona is a devoted companion who absolutely adores his humans. When he’s not keeping watch, you can usually find him exercising alongside his owner or happily searching for his next snack—because Kona is definitely a dog who loves his food.

Oakley is a rescue from an eightpuppy litter found abandoned along a dirt road in Maiden, NC, right near where our home was under construction, and he quickly stole our hearts after being discovered by chance during a routine stop. Now part of our family for two years, Oakley—named for the oak trees where he was found—has been a loving, playful companion who helped heal our hearts after the loss of our senior dog and continues to bring joy every day.

These sweet pups have been by our side through every major milestone. They greeted us as soon as we returned home, the night we got engaged. They were in our wedding, they were wagging their tails patiently for us both days we brought home our boys from the hospital. Totally unaware of how much their lives were going to change. Our boys now love them as much as we do. I can’t imagine a day or milestone without them. They are truly the best.

ANNUAL CHECKUPS

MATTER MORE THAN YOU THINK

Pets age faster than we do, and changes can happen quickly. What feels like a routine year for you can be significant for them. Regular vet visits help catch issues early, often before your dog slows down or your cat starts behaving differently.

FRIENDLY REMINDER FOR PET-FRIENDLY TREATS

Those pleading eyes can be hard to resist, but many everyday foods can be harmful to both dogs and cats. Chocolate, grapes, onions, and certain artificial sweeteners are big no-no’s; and fatty meats such as bacon, sausage, and fatty cuts of beef or pork can lead to stomach upset or even pancreatitis.

4

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

You know your pet’s routines, quirks, and personality better than anyone. If something feels “off,” trust that instinct. Whether it’s your dog skipping a meal or your cat acting out of character, it’s always worth checking in.

LITTER BOX HABITS ARE A HEALTH WINDOW

For cat owners, the litter box is one of the best early warning systems. Changes in frequency, posture, or even where a cat chooses to go can signal anything from stress to urinary or kidney issues.

DENTAL DISEASE CAN START EARLY

Many pets show signs of dental disease by age three, long before most owners think to check. Starting dental care early can prevent more serious health issues later on.

PREVENTION IS EASIER (AND MORE AFFORDABLE) THAN TREATMENT

Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, along with vaccines and routine screenings, are essential for both dogs and cats. A proactive approach helps avoid bigger health concerns down the road and keeps your pet comfortable year-round.

5

WEIGHT GAIN SNEAKS UP QUICKLY

A few extra treats or overfilled bowls can add up fast. Indoor cats and less active dogs are especially prone to weight gain, which can affect joints, energy levels, and long-term health. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the simplest ways to support longevity.

CATS ARE MASTERS AT HIDING PAIN

Cats in particular are incredibly good at masking discomfort. It’s an instinct from their wild ancestry. By the time a cat shows obvious signs, an issue may already be advanced. Subtle changes like less jumping, hiding, or shifts in grooming habits can be early clues worth paying attention to.

A MOTHER’S DAY tosavor

MOTHER’S DAY IS ALL ABOUT THE WOMEN WHO do so much for us. It’s a day to show appreciation and create meaningful moments together. Whether it’s sharing a relaxed brunch, enjoying a favorite drink, or simply soaking up time in a sunny spot, making her feel seen, valued, and celebrated is the focus. This year, turn Mother’s Day into a celebration she’ll truly treasure.

A LITTLE ADVENTURE

Mother’s Day is about more than just a meal. Pair brunch or a cocktail outing with a stroll around town, a gallery visit, or a garden walk. For something a little more unexpected, create a simple scavenger hunt that leads Mom to a table waiting just for her.

LIVELY LIBATIONS

Add a playful twist with a “Mom’s Choice” drink station. It’s interactive, indulgent, and perfect for adding a fun, festive touch (and great photo opportunities). Think prosecco, sparkling water, iced tea, fresh citrus, berries, herbs, and edible flowers.

BECAUSE BRUNCH IS MORE THAN MIMOSAS

Moms deserve food that’s thoughtful, shareable, and full of flavor, and Paloma has the kind of brunch that invites everyone to slow down, catch up, and raise a glass together. Think elevated brunch favorites like:

• Smoked Salmon Deviled Eggs with herb cream cheese and pickled red onion

• Avocado Toast topped with a perfectly cooked egg and a drizzle of balsamic glaze

• Shrimp & Grits with smoked gouda, andouille sausage, and a rich creole cream sauce

• Burrata & Pear with charred grapes and peppery arugula

DELIGHT IN THE DETAILS

It’s the little details that make the day unforgettable. Do some planning ahead and create a few Memorable Mom Moments such as:

• Personalized champagne flutes or napkins with her initials, a favorite quote, or song lyrics.

• A handwritten note of gratitude or poem tucked under her plate.

• Jewelry hidden with the sugar packets or a small gift tucked into her napkin.

• Let the flowers (and even the vase) go home with her for a special gift she’ll remember.

RELAXATION & CONNECTION

Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. From small bites and signature cocktails to thoughtful surprises and time spent together, the goal is simple: connection, indulgence, and joy — all for the moms who deserve it most.

ROOTS IN THE FLOWER SHOP

“I grew up in my parents’ flower shop in Brooklyn. It opened when I was just five and honestly, it was the heartbeat of our family. Buckets of roses, spools of ribbon, the comings and goings of people celebrating life’s big moments— that was my childhood. Years later, both of my daughters, Jordanna and Janelle, were born while I was still working there. So in many ways, flowers have always been part of my family story.”

A DIFFERENT PATH OF SERVICE

“Even though flowers were always around me, I didn’t start out planning to run a floral studio. I worked as an EMT for the New York City Fire Department and later studied nursing. Those jobs taught me empathy, discipline, and how important it is to be present for people during vulnerable moments. No matter where life took me, though, flowers were always my emotional home ... they called me back every time.”

WHEN PASSION BECAME A CALLING

“Creating with flowers became my way of telling stories. Through Petal Perfections, I get to celebrate weddings, new babies, anniversaries, and even goodbyes. Flowers help people say what words sometimes can’t. That’s what I love most ... knowing that something I made helps mark a moment someone will never forget.”

GROWING SOMETHING THAT LASTS

“My daughters inspire me every day. I want them to see that dreams are built with courage, creativity, and consistency. I start each morning with a few quiet minutes to ground myself because I know I can’t pour into others if I haven’t poured into myself first. On a perfect day, I’m surrounded by fresh flowers, creating something beautiful, and knowing that somewhere, a memory will live on through my work. Like many mothers, I’m planting seeds today that I hope will bloom for generations.” w

LAYER TEXTURES AND COLORS

Pillows and throws are your best friends for quick style upgrades. Swap pillows seasonally, mix patterns, and layer throws in baskets or draped over furniture. The result? Depth, comfort, and an instant “lived-in chic” feel.

TIPS FROM A MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO

The most inviting homes are those filled with warmth, personality, and pieces that tell a story— they’re not just styled, they’re truly lived in. This Mother’s Day, take inspiration from Whitlyn’s Boutique and the mother-daughter duo behind it, Lynne and Whitney Barbee, whose thoughtful approach helps transform any space into one that feels both beautiful and deeply personal.

MIX, MATCH, AND MAKE IT YOURS

Gone are the days of matching everything perfectly. Combine different wood tones, sprinkle in pops of color, and add touches of black for definition. Think of black accents like eyeliner for your room ... they make everything else shine.

LIGHT THE WAY TO COZY

Lighting sets the mood. Candles aren’t just pretty, they create a sense of intimacy and relaxation. Scatter them across tables, inside lanterns, or among bookshelves, and let seasonal scents fill the air for a home that welcomes everyone who enters.

CELEBRATE WITH COLOR

Neutral bases are timeless, but splashes of color bring rooms to life. Mustard, sage, or dusty rose can be woven into textiles, décor, or art to reflect your personal style and brighten your home for spring and beyond.

BRING NATURE INSIDE

A little greenery goes a long way. Mix eucalyptus, magnolia, or seasonal blooms for a fresh, organic vibe. Faux stems are perfect for lasting style, while fresh flowers add movement, fragrance, and joy just like a bouquet from mom. w

where beauty meets legacy

At Valeria Salon in Huntersville, beauty has always been a family affair. More than 23 years ago, Geri Palillo opened the doors with a vision that went beyond haircuts and treatments. “My mom wanted a place where people could escape for a little me-time, recharge, and truly feel cared for,” says Rachelle Charles, Geri’s daughter and now the salon’s leader. What began as a two-story salon, spa, and boutique quickly became a community hub, a place where clients didn’t just come for services—they came for the experience and the relationships they built along the way.

Valeria originally operated as a traditional commission salon, giving stylists 50 percent of their service fees while the salon covered the rest of the overhead, training, and marketing. “Back then, a commission salon rarely lasted more than a few years, but my mom built something that endured,” Rachelle notes. The salon thrived for more than two decades, thanks to strong leadership, ongoing education for stylists, and a welcoming atmosphere that kept clients coming back.

they crave, but I also didn’t want to lose the essence of what makes Valeria special,” Rachelle smiles.

Over time, the salon industry began to shift. Independent studio spaces became popular, giving stylists more freedom to run their own businesses. While the model offered flexibility, it often came at the expense of the client experience—cramped rooms, limited natural light, and minimal reception areas left visits feeling transactional rather than indulgent. “I wanted to give our stylists the independence

Under her leadership, Valeria has embraced a thoughtful hybrid approach. The salon now features just eight spacious studios, each filled with natural light, along with a welcoming reception and comfortable waiting areas. “It’s the best of both worlds,” Rachelle explains. “Stylists can run their own business, and clients still get that full salon experience they’ve loved for years.”

By combining freedom for the professionals with a client-focused environment, Rachelle has preserved her mother’s legacy while shaping Valeria for the future. Today, the salon remains a place where clients can unwind, feel pampered, and leave looking and feeling their very best, continuing a story of beauty, care, and family that began more than two decades ago.

THIS MOTHER’S DAY, GIVE HER THE GIFT of OUTDOOR LIVING

LET’S BE HONEST FOR A MOMENT—MOMS RARELY ASK FOR MUCH. A CARD, MAYBE FLOWERS, PERHAPS A QUIET MOMENT WITH A CUP OF COFFEE BEFORE THE DAY BEGINS. BUT WHAT IF THIS MOTHER’S DAY GIFT COULD LAST LONGER THAN A BOUQUET?

That’s the kind of everyday moment that Lake Norman Patio & Game Rooms helps families create.

Whether you’re refreshing a small porch or creating the ultimate backyard gathering spot, their team helps make the process simple and enjoyable.

Motherhood, FAITH, gratitude

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the many ways women nurture the people around them—at home, at work, and throughout their communities. For Dr. Michele Putnam, owner of Vitality Chiropractic & Acupuncture, caring for others has long been at the heart of who she is.

Dr. Putnam has been balancing a thriving career here in the Lake Norman area for over 30 years. She is a proud mother of four grown children— Austin and his wife Yuqi, Brittany, Taylor, and Bella—and stepmother to 16-year-old Fore. “I am thankful to have worked through the juggle (and jungle!) of career and family that comes in those earlier years of motherhood,” she explains, “and now I enjoy seeing my children navigate life and accomplish their goals.”

She also enjoys seeing her patients achieve their goals. Helping others find balance and wellness is more than a profession for Dr. Putnam, it’s a calling rooted in compassion, faith, and a lifelong passion for holistic health.

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Putnam’s journey into healthcare began with a strong academic foundation. She attended Missouri State University for her undergraduate studies before earning her Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Logan University, where she also completed certification in acupuncture. Her dedication to advancing her knowledge led her to pursue further specialization, including a diplomate certification from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and a fellowship from the American Board of Oriental

Reproductive Medicine. "With specialized training in acupuncture and reproductive medicine,” Dr. Putnam says,” I help patients navigate everything from PMS and fertility challenges to menopause. My work frequently supports women from the early stages of trying to conceive through pregnancy and beyond.”

Helping others find balance and wellness is more than a profession for Dr. Putnam, it’s a calling rooted in compassion, faith, and a lifelong passion for holistic health.

Dr. Putnam began her career practicing in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where she helped introduce acupuncture to the York County community. “I was one of the first acupuncture providers in the area at that time and had the opportunity to serve the community and bring a new treatment to the area,” she says. Her expertise even led to a guest appearance on the local PBS program Homepage, where she discussed the benefits of acupuncture.

Today, her practice reflects both her experience and her vision for comprehensive care. Alongside chiropractor Dr. Kayla and massage therapist Stacey Dickens, the team offers a wide range of services including chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, dry needling, massage, laser therapy,

and functional health treatments. Dr. Kayla is also certified in the Webster Technique, which focuses on pelvic alignment during pregnancy.

The team’s philosophy extends beyond simply treating symptoms. “It’s a paradigm shift,” Dr. Putnam says. “It goes beyond just fixing problems ... it’s educating people about obtaining overall wellness—mind, body, and spirit.”

Her mission has always been to support patients on their journey to health, vitality, and balance. Today that remains the core focus ... a simple yet powerful proclamation: help others live healthier, fuller lives—one patient, one day at a time. w

Reimagining Care.

ONE STORY AT A TIME Restoring Trust. Transforming

Medicine, Breastfeeding, Backed by Care:

PERSONALIZED LACTATION SUPPORT AT ONE HEALTH

Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn't mean it is always easy. Mothers often need support at some point during their feeding journey.

One Health values the need for lactation support and has two International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) who serve five OBGYN offices in this area (Lincolnton, Link Landing, Lake Norman, Mooresville and Prosperity). These lactation consultants see pregnant and postpartum women and take the time to answer their questions and concerns. Each visit is tailored to the patient’s needs, lasting up to 75 minutes to allow time to assess a baby feeding or assist with pumping and make adjustments to help breastfeeding and pumping more comfortable. If a baby is having trouble gaining weight or a mother is having painful breastfeeding, the lactation consultants create a plan to help the mother be more comfortable and confident that her baby is getting enough milk.

Lactation consultants help families navigate a variety of challenges like painful latch, breast pain, mastitis, tongue tie, low milk supply, and breast pump use. Women can schedule a lactation visit even if they are not a One Health patient by calling one of the One Health OBGYN offices or through the Atrium Health MyChart app, and these appointments are covered by insurance.

Pregnancy through the entire first year postpartum is an important season in a woman's life. While it can be a beautiful time full of joy and anticipation, it is also an emotional time. Body changes, shifting hormones and sleep deprivation, in addition to her support system and a short maternity leave, can impact a mother's mental health. In fact, 1 in 5 mothers experience anxiety or depression during this time. Both of One Health’s lactation consultants earned a certification in maternal mental health (PMH-C). This extra training means they are able to better support families through difficult emotions and also recognize when a mother needs more specialized care. The lactation consultants work closely together with

other providers to ensure that every mother gets the care she needs.

One Health began its lactation program in May 2024 when Jeanette O'Neill, IBCLC, LCCE, PMH-C, joined the team. With more than 15 years of experience in women’s health as a lactation consultant and educator, Jeanette offers compassionate care to help each mother feel seen and heard. As a resident of Iredell County, she understands families’ need for lactation support close to home. She creates a safe space for all families to find their rhythm. Jeanette covers offices in Mooresville, Lake Norman (Cornelius) and in the Prosperity area. When not at work, Jeanette enjoys traveling with her husband and listening to Taylor Swift music with their three teenage daughters.

In March 2026, One Health expanded its lactation program with Allison Harkey, IBCLC, PMH-C. Allison brings 10 years of experience in the hospital caring for postpartum mothers, advocating for NICU families, and helping moms meet their breastfeeding goals through

outpatient services. As a resident of Lincoln County, she is excited to provide breastfeeding support for neighbors, making lactation care more accessible. She is passionate about maternal mental health and advocating for additional postpartum support. Allison covers offices in Lincolnton and Link Landing (Denver). When not in the office, you can usually find Allison in her garden or enjoying time outside with her husband and their two daughters.

Whether it’s her first time or fourth time learning to feed her newborn, mothers often find that their breastfeeding journey and postpartum experience look different with each child. Patients have the opportunity at One Health to see a friendly face, who will listen to their story, while supporting them to breastfeed their baby with confidence.

RESEARCH PUBLISHED

IN the Journal of Environmental Psychology shows that cluttered environments are linked to higher stress, reduced mental clarity, and even elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol—effects that can accumulate quickly for busy moms juggling work, kids, and household routines.

Wellness experts note that our surroundings shape our mindset, and a peaceful, functional closet isn’t just about neatness; it’s a small but powerful tool for mindfulness, calm, and control. Even something as routine as getting dressed in the morning becomes smoother and more positive when everything has its place. Overflowing or chaotic closets can contribute to decision fatigue and a lingering sense of overwhelm, while a thoughtfully organized space creates a ripple of calm throughout the day—making room, literally and figuratively, for what matters most. This Mother’s Day, consider your closet not just a storage space but a sanctuary. A little organization goes a long way in helping moms breathe easier, start their mornings grounded, and focus on the people and moments that truly matter.

NO MORE MORNING MAYHEM

Hunting for a missing shoe, sweater, or accessory is frustrating for anyone but for a mom on a tight schedule, it can set the tone for the entire day. When items are visible and easy to access, those small stressors disappear, leaving more energy for family, work, or self-care.

MINDFUL CHOICES

When your wardrobe is organized, it’s easier to choose outfits intentionally rather than grabbing the first thing you see. Taking a moment to pick something that makes you feel confident and comfortable can boost mood and set a positive tone before the day even begins.

SAVES TIME & ENERGY

An organized closet streamlines routines. With everything grouped logically and accessible, getting dressed becomes faster and more pleasant—leaving more time to enjoy your morning coffee, read with the kids, or simply breathe.

PROMOTES GRATITUDE

When clothing is arranged thoughtfully, it’s easier to appreciate what you already own. Rediscovering favorite pieces tucked in the back of a crowded closet reminds us that beauty and joy are already present, just waiting to be noticed.

IT'S LIBERATING

Sorting through items you no longer wear or need creates space (both physically and emotionally!) for new possibilities. For moms, letting go of the old can feel empowering, a gentle reminder that self-care and clarity are worth making room for.

Rewrite Your Story. Reclaim Your Life.

TO THE WOMAN WHO CARRIES A LOT…

Let’s sit together for a second. Women were not granted a road map or a manual, and life can be truly heavy and exhausting. We carry it all… expectations, grief, self-doubt, and the quiet pressure to hold everything… and everyone together. Our brains and bodies hold more than we ever were supposed to hold. It’s heavy and can feel oh.. so… isolating.

Life doesn't always give us a clean break between chapters. Sometimes one season just bleeds into the next, and before you know it, you’re exhausted from trying to keep your footing. Whether it’s the fallout of a divorce, the quiet ache of an empty nest, or even the heavy pressure of your own success, it’s easy to feel like you’re just going through the motions. You’re doing

a dream; it’s the version of your life where you finally set the terms.

That desire for women to be seen and heard is what compelled Morgan Brawley, MA, LCMHCA, NCC to open Unbridled Counseling and Wellness, PLLC. As a Mooresville native, Mom, Daughter, Sister and friend Morgan built a practice where therapy isn’t about 'fixing’' you for the world. We believe it’s about

'all the things,' yet you still feel like you’re searching for a version of yourself that got left behind.

But to the woman reading this, here is the truth you might need to hear today: you are allowed to want more than just 'getting by.' You deserve more than just surviving the day. You deserve clarity, confidence, and genuine peace. Imagine what it would feel like to set a boundary without guilt, or to finally trust your own instinct over everyone else’s opinions of what you should be doing. That’s not just

stripping away the expectations and reconnecting with who you actually are. We provide the rare kind of space where you can scream if you need to, cry if it helps, or simply exist without having to perform. Every part of your story matters here, and we are committed to sitting in the trenches with you until you find your peace. You can show up exactly as you are. Here, your feelings aren't 'too much.' They are the roadmap, and we are

honored to sit beside you as you navigate them.

For the woman carrying the weight of everyone else’s world, it’s okay to finally choose your own. Rewriting your story doesn’t mean erasing the past. It means choosing how you move forward. And perhaps, for the first time in a long time, choosing yourself. You don’t have to find your way back alone. Your journey to healing starts here, and we have a spot on the couch waiting for you.

THE RUT NOT TAKEN ...

findingA NEW

PATH forward

strength doesn’t always roar.

Sometimes it whispers quietly for years, waiting for the moment it must finally rise. And when it does, you realize it has been there all along—steady, resilient, and ready to carry you forward on the days you need it most.

For Ansle Hudson (Certified Divorce Coach and founder of ASH Divorce Coaching), that moment came after more than three decades in a high-conflict marriage. The experience reshaped her world in profound ways and ultimately led her to help others navigate similar storms. Even the name of her practice reflects the resilience she discovered along the way.

While the letters are her initials, they also reference the ash tree known for its remarkable strength and flexibility. For centuries, ash wood has been used to make wagon wheels and chariot axles because it can withstand tremendous weight, and to craft bows because it bends without breaking. It’s a fitting metaphor.

“I walked on all the eggshells,” Ansle shares, “and held on to irrational optimism for years, but through that experience, I learned the strategies to survive and, most importantly, to succeed.”

Ansle’s keen perceptions on life began early. In fact, one of the most powerful examples she uses comes from a childhood memory:

“I grew up on a gravel road,” she recalls. “The kind that developed deep grooves over time—compacted paths carved by the repetition of passing cars. When I rode my bike along those grooves, steering required very little effort. As long as I stayed in the rut, I could glide forward. There was comfort in that predictability. No bumps, no decisions, no surprises. But once

each year, a dump truck would spill fresh gravel across the road, and a bulldozer would level everything out, erasing the old grooves. Suddenly the road became unstable with loose gravel and dust flying everywhere.”

Ansle would often park her bike for days, waiting for the road to settle again and eventually new grooves would form. Almost without noticing, she’d find herself riding merrily along once again, confident and unencumbered. Until, much like in life, different ruts were made. New ruts, yes, but ruts all the same. The lesson stayed with her.

“That’s the thing about ruts,” Ansle explains. “They’re easy. Familiar. They keep us moving in a direction without requiring us to make decisions, but they can also limit us. They keep us from detouring—from noticing the pond by the neighbor’s house, the wildflowers growing in the field, and all the other magic that lies ahead.”

Relationships easily fall into similar patterns. Our brains are wired for routine and familiarity. Even when something no longer serves us—or worse, harms us—we default to those wellworn paths. That neurological pull can be powerful.

“Relationship ruts form through repetition, habit, and the neurophysiology of attachment,” she says. “Even when a relationship becomes toxic, the brain can cling to patterns that feel safer than change. For many of my clients, particularly mothers, the decision to leave those patterns behind is complicated by concern for their children. Mothers often carry enormous emotional weight during divorce; but choosing strength and clarity can ultimately model resilience for their children.”

Like the gravel road
Ansle traveled as a child—when the dust settles, a new path begins to appear… leading somewhere better than you ever imagined.

Ansle completed the intensive High Conflict Divorce Coach Certification Program, an eightweek training that focuses on the complicated dynamics of contentious divorces, particularly when abuse or personality disorders are involved. But while certification gave her tools, Ansle believes her personal experience is what allows her to truly connect with clients.

“I get it,” she says simply. “I recognize that it only takes one toxic or abusive individual to create a high-conflict situation. I offer a compassionate, non-judgmental space where people can process their emotions and explore their options. Together, we develop a plan with confidence, clarity, and a necessary mindset shift.”

And sometimes the biggest transformations happen quietly. It’s that rediscovery Ansle hopes

to guide others toward.

“I’ve had clients tell me they thought they’d never feel like themselves again,” she relays. “But through the process, they discovered a stronger, more confident version of themselves.”

Life can feel overwhelming at times, but you don’t have to face it alone. The bravest step may be the one that leads you away from the familiar ruts. Like the gravel road Ansle traveled as a child—when the dust settles, a new path begins to appear… leading somewhere better than you ever imagined. w

A graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Hargrove continued his training through a rigorous path that included residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and a highly specialized fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. WHEN

IT COMES TO CHOOSING a diamond, its origin can be just as important as its appearance. For centuries, Antwerp (an historic city in Belgium) has played a central role in the global diamond trade, earning its reputation as the diamond capital of the world.

Located just north of Brussels, Antwerp is home to the famed Diamond District, a compact area near the central train station where generations of cutters, traders, and dealers have worked side by side. The city’s connection to diamonds spans more than 500 years, and at its peak, it handled the vast majority of the world’s rough diamond supply. Even today, it remains one of the most trusted and influential hubs in the industry.

What sets Antwerp apart is its concentration of expertise. Diamonds often pass through multiple hands here with each step involving careful cutting, grading, and evaluation. For buyers, this means access to stones that have been examined with a high level of precision and craftsmanship. Seeing diamonds in person, rather than relying solely on digital listings, also allows for direct comparison of quality, cut, and character.

There is also a practical side to sourcing from a place like Antwerp. Because it sits so close to the center of the supply chain, it can reduce layers of distribution that sometimes add cost without adding value. That proximity can make a difference when balancing quality and price.

Beyond logistics, Antwerp continues to influence trends within the jewelry world. New cutting styles, evolving preferences, and shifts in craftsmanship often emerge from this environment, where tradition and innovation coexist.

Ultimately, Antwerp’s significance isn’t just about prestige; it’s about its longstanding role in shaping how diamonds are sourced, evaluated, and appreciated. For anyone considering a diamond, understanding that journey offers a deeper appreciation for the stone itself ... one that goes far beyond its sparkle. w

Unlocking Medicare

BENEFITS YOU MAY BE MISSING AND HOW TO CLAIM THEM

Every year, billions of dollars in Medicare benefits go unclaimed — not because people don’t qualify, but because no one told them where to look. If you or someone you love is on Medicare, consider this your starting point.

YOUR FIRST STOP:

BenefitsCheckUp.org

Benefits Check Up is a free, confidential online tool created by the National Council on Aging that matches older adults with benefits programs based on their financial situation and location. You answer a few simple questions and the tool surfaces programs you may qualify for (many with nothing to do with income and everything to do with your circumstances).

The site connects users with nearly 2,000 benefits programs covering food, medicine, utilities, and daily expenses including Medicare Savings Programs, the Part D Low-Income Subsidy, SNAP, and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Visit BenefitsCheckUp.org or call 1-800-794-6559.

EXTRA HELP: The Most Underused Benefit in Medicare

The Extra Help program (also called the Low-Income Subsidy) helps cover Part D prescription drug costs. The Social Security Administration estimates its average annual value at $5,700 per person. In 2026, qualifying beneficiaries pay no more than $5.10 for generics and $12.65 for brand-name drugs, with no coverage gap and no deductible. Eligibility is based on income and resources, but the only way to know for certain is to apply. Do that at ssa.gov/ extrahelp or by calling 1-800-772-1213.

The Eldercare Locator:

A national resource most people have never heard of. Funded by the U.S. Administration on Aging, the Eldercare Locator connects older adults and people with disabilities with local services — from transportation and housing to benefits eligibility and home-based care. Call 800-677-1116, Monday through Friday, or visit eldercare. acl.gov. If you’re not sure what to ask or where to turn, start here.

The Bottom Line

MEDICARE SAVINGS PROGRAMS : Over $8,000 in Annual Value

Medicare Savings Programs are stateadministered programs that help cover premiums, deductibles, and cost-sharing for people with limited income. Enrollment in an MSP combined with Extra Help is estimated to save individuals at least $8,400 annually. Yet an estimated 40% of eligible people are still not enrolled, largely because they assume they won’t qualify. Apply through your state Medicaid office. Even if you are unsure, apply anyway.

The gap between what Medicare recipients are entitled to and what they actually receive is almost always an information gap. These programs are real, funded, and available right now, and most people who qualify have never heard of them. That’s where an independent broker earns their value. We don’t just help you navigate the plans; we help you understand everything Medicare has available to you. w

Cranberry, Feta, Goat Cheese, & Pistachio

croissants

Don’t let the fancy name intimidate you! These shortcut croissants are simultaneously sweet, savory, and insanely delicious. They come together quickly and disappear just as fast. Glam up Mother’s Day brunch or make them for afternoon tea ... either way, these tasty delights do not disappoint.

INSTRUCTIONS

First, thaw the puff pastry in the refrigerator. Once thawed, roll out onto a cutting board. Next, evenly cut the puff pastry sheet along the lines. This will leave you with three even pieces.

Cut each piece diagonally, creating triangle shapes. This will give you six triangles.

Mix the honey and olive oil. Layer the inside of each triangle with the mix. This will help the additional ingredients stick.

Layer each triangle with crushed pistachios, feta, goat cheese, and dried cranberries. Making sure to leave a little bit of the crushed pistachios left for the final layer.

Roll the stuffed croissant by starting with the larger side of the triangle.

Some ingredients might fall out. That’s ok! Just

INGREDIENTS

1 Sheet Puff Pastry, thawed

2 tbsp. Honey

2 tsp. Olive Oil

1/4 cup Whole Honey

Roasted Pistachios

2 oz. Crumbled Goat Cheese

2 oz. Crumbled Feta

1/3 cup Dried Cranberries

1 Egg + 1 tbsp. of water, lightly beaten

Dash of Powdered Sugar,  for garnish

A little Pink Himalayan Salt, for garnish

tuck them into the sides once you have rolled them into the croissant shape.

Mix together the egg and water. Brush each croissant with the mix, then lightly sprinkle the tops with pistachios. This is optional but makes them prettier.

Bake in a 350F preheated oven for 25 minutes on a lined baking sheet.

Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving platter. Decorate each with desired amount of powdered sugar and a light dusting of salt. Enjoy immediately. w

IN MOTION

RETHINKING

HOW LIFE HAPPENS

Have you ever felt like life was just happening to you? Like you were along for the ride—reacting, adjusting, trying to keep up—but never quite feeling like you had a say in how things unfolded?

That feeling is more common than you might think. And it even has a name. Here’s something worth understanding first: consciousness — the inner lens through which we experience everything — naturally evolves. And at each stage of that evolution, life shows up differently. The version of life that appears is always responding to the version of who and how we are being.

Polarity Consciousness is the first stage — where life genuinely does feel like it’s coming at you. Everything gets filtered through evaluation: good or bad, right or wrong. And the question that echoes loudest is, Why is this happening to me?

That stage? It’s not the end of the story. As awareness grows, something beautiful begins to happen. Life starts feeling less like an obstacle course and more like an invitation. The hard seasons begin to carry meaning. The detours start looking like direction. This is Christ Consciousness — where forgiveness opens the door, acceptance replaces resistance, and even the

LKN expert

difficult things begin to feel like they’re working for you. That shift alone can change everything.

But there’s even more available. There is a third stage — Faith Consciousness — where life no longer just happens to you or even for you. It begins to move through you. This is where something profound becomes possible: the ability to consciously choose your reality. To step into the version of your life that reflects your soul’s highest expression — the path, the relationships, the purpose, the peace — and begin living from that place now, rather than waiting for circumstances to catch up.

It’s no longer just belief or hope. It becomes alignment — holding a clear internal direction, claiming what is yours, and embodying the version of you already living your highest reality. Think of it like a radio signal.

The broadcast is always transmitting, but you only experience it when your receiver is tuned to the right frequency. When intention meets receptivity, the signal meets the receiver, and what was always available suddenly becomes your lived experience.

Life happens to us until we awaken to a higher perspective. It begins happening for us as we embrace forgiveness and open to grace. And as our inner alignment deepens, we discover the ability to participate in how reality actually shows up — consciously choosing the life we were always meant to live. This is personal heaven on earth. Some arrive there unexpectedly. Others access it deliberately, through what is known as the technology of faith. That’s not coincidence. That’s faith in motion. w
