her senior year of college.

I honestly don't know how we got here.

The other day I found myself thinking about fifth grade, when she wrote an original song for the PTA Reflections competition. It earned first place at Torrence Creek Elementary, first in Mecklenburg County, and third in North Carolina for music composition. One lyric still makes me smile: "I want to go to college to get some good knowledge."

At the time, college felt like a lifetime away. She was a little girl sitting at the kitchen table with a notebook full of dreams. Today, she's preparing for her final year before stepping into the next chapter of her life.

The years weren't measured in report cards. They were measured in play rehearsals, cheering from the audience on opening night, celebrating victories over ice cream at Carolina Cones, talking through broken hearts in the car, and all the ordinary Tuesday afternoons I thought would last forever.

Somewhere along the way, those ordinary moments became the memories I treasure most.

As I look back, I'm reminded that she didn't get here alone.

I'm grateful for every teacher who encouraged her, challenged her, and believed in her. One email exchange with a high school math teacher has stayed with me for years. After I thanked her for helping Katie gain confidence, she wrote back: "From the fear on the first day to the bravery to help her peers. From the 'I can't' to the 'Let me do it again.' That's my reason why."

For some students, the classroom is a field while others choose a desk, podium, or gallery. For me, it’s the stage. When children are given the opportunity to discover where they truly belong, they don’t just develop talent; they develop identity, purpose, and belief in themselves.

Choosing where they belong is how a child learns to build confidence, learns to think on their feet, live in the moment, discover resilience, and come alive. It’s not all rainbows and butterflies. It’s often challenging work, but in those difficult moments young minds learn to focus, solve problems, persevere, and rise to the occasion. That’s where true growth happens.

Like anyone who finally fits the last piece of a puzzle into place, the sense of accomplishment becomes the foundation of genuine pride.

After more than 35 years of working with children, I’ve learned something that extends far beyond dance and theatre: confidence isn’t created by constant praise.

It’s earned through effort, patience, and faith. Children become confident when they attempt something difficult, struggle through it, and discover they are capable of more than they ever imagined.

That belief is built one challenge at a time. Every missed goal, forgotten line, wrong answer, or lost opportunity becomes a chance to grow. Instead of rescuing children from failure, we should offer them two of the most powerful words in the English language: not yet. “I can’t do it...yet.” “I’m not ready...

THE

Emotional Cost

I

OF BEING TOO UNDERSTANDING once had client say to me, “He usually didn’t hurt me too bad.”

That is a sentiment I’ve heard too many times from my clients. Some were referencing physical abuse, others meaning emotionally and still others simply meaning callously.

The issue really isn’t the harm that they do, it’s the harm that she suffers. No matter the type of harm, self-diminishment is the result – regardless of the intention.

If you’re a goodhearted woman, you probably understand people more deeply than they understand themselves. You learned to keep the peace, not rock the boat and put yourself in other’s shoes. And somewhere along the way, that beautiful empathy turned into something heavier; something that asks more of you than it gives back.

Most women don’t become “too understanding” out of weakness. It’s usually a survival skill learned early. If you grew up reading the room, adjusting yourself or managing someone else’s emotions, you learned to understand people as a way to stay safe and connected and we keep doing it in adulthood.

That’s where the emotional cost begins.

Every time we excuse behavior that hurts, a small part of us steps back. Every time we minimize our needs, we train others that our needs can be minimized.

Every time you rationalize a red flag, you reinforce the belief that you should tolerate more than you deserve.

The confusion often comes from mixing empathy with responsibility. Clients have told me, “If I understand why they did it, I shouldn’t feel hurt.” Or, “If I understand their trauma, I should be patient.” But empathy doesn’t require you to carry someone else’s emotional weight.

Understanding someone’s story doesn’t mean you have to absorb the impact of their behavior.

Empathy is simply seeing clearly.

Responsibility is deciding what to do with what you see.

There’s a moment an empowered woman reaches - when she realizes she’s tired of being the emotional anchor for everyone else.

It sounds like: “They didn’t mean to hurt me” or “They didn’t intentionally forget me” or “I didn’t remind them that they promised to keep their word.”

She begins asking new questions: “Do they reciprocate?” “Do they take responsibility?” “Do they show up emotionally?”

Each excuse has different words but they all sound the same – “I understand.”

And when the answer is no, she doesn’t collapse. She doesn’t chase and she does not beg. She simply says, “I understand you… but I choose me.”

Dave Jones is the founder of Captive Coaching and Empowerment. For years he has helped good-hearted women overcome drama and trauma to build confidence, set healthy boundaries, and step into their power. His passion for this work is deeply personal, inspired by the struggles of the women in his own life—especially his mom and sister. It’s when you stop carrying emotional weight that isn’t yours. It’s when you realize your empathy is a gift and not everyone has earned access to it.

If you’ve spent your life being “too understanding,” I want you to hear this clearly:

Your heart and empathy are beautiful.

But your goodness should never cost you yourself.

Empathy without boundaries drains you.

founder and president of Lake Norman Hair Loss Solutions, that journey of learning has shaped every chapter of her life. Rather than viewing obstacles as setbacks, she sees them as opportunities for growth. It’s a perspective that has guided her through personal hardships, career reinventions, and courageous leaps of faith.

“I never lose, I learn,” Debby says. “It’s become my philosophy. Every setback teaches you something... it prepares you for the next opportunity.”

It’s something she didn’t learn from a motivational book or business seminar.

She learned it through experience. “It happened in my early twenties,” she shares. “At the time, there were very few hair loss solutions available for women. I remember how emotional and isolating it felt. Hair is such a big part of how we see ourselves, and when you start losing it, it can affect every part of your identity.”

Born and raised in Sacramento, California, Debby developed a love for the beauty industry at an early age. Some of her fondest memories involve accompanying her mother to the salon and watching stylists transform not only appearances, but how people felt about themselves.

“I always loved going to the salon with my mom,” she says. “Even as a teenager, I was fascinated by the creativity and the way clients seemed to leave lighter than when they arrived.”

That fascination led her to enroll in her high school’s cosmetology program, earning her professional license at just 18 years old. But after experiencing hair loss herself, her focus shifted from beauty to something far more meaningful.

“I realized people weren’t just looking for hair,” she says. “They were looking for something deeper.

They wanted to feel like themselves again.”

In 1999, Debby turned that realization into a mission, launching the business that would become her life’s work. Today, she brings more than three decades of experience and nearly 60 years of combined industry knowledge alongside her husband and business partner, Gary. Together, they have built a company based on empathy, trust, and lived experience.

Supported by a team of licensed cosmetologists and trichologytrained professionals, the practice offers private, personalized solutions designed to restore not only hair, but self-esteem.

“We understand the emotional impact of hair loss because we’ve lived it ourselves,” Debby says.

“That connection remains at the heart of everything we do. When someone comes to us, they’re often carrying years of embarrassment, frustration, or even grief. They’ve tried products that didn’t work.

They’ve hidden under hats or avoided photographs. Sometimes they’re afraid to even talk about it. What I love most is seeing that moment when someone looks in the mirror and recognizes themselves again. It’s hard to describe how powerful that is.”

Behind every successful woman is often someone who believes in her dreams, and Debby is quick to credit Gary as her biggest supporter. The couple met on a blind date 30 years ago and have been building a life together ever since.

“Meeting Gary changed my life,” she smiles. “We’ve built everything together. We challenge ourselves and support each other’s ideas, and somehow, we always find a way to make them work.”

One of those challenges involved stepping away from their successful California hair restoration business and moving nearly 2,700 miles across the country to begin a new chapter in North Carolina. “It was definitely a leap of faith, and one heck of a mountain to climb, but we did it,” she says with a laugh.

“Leaving everything familiar wasn’t easy, but growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone.”

home, Faith Amigo-Choplin (owner and business development manager of Choplin’s Restaurant and The Guesthouse) has had quite the journey ... literally!

Beginning in the Philippines, she was just 6 years old when what she thought was a four-month family vacation across the United States became a life-changing adventure. After visiting every state, her father revealed the real purpose of the trip: the family was moving to America. Seeking stability amid political unrest in their home country, her parents settled in Charlotte, where they built a successful import business supplying furnishings and home décor to retailers across the country.

Because her parents traveled extensively for work, Faith often traveled alongside them, giving her a truly global upbringing. “I grew up everywhere,” she says with a smile. “Those experiences exposed me to diverse cultures, cuisines, and people ... lessons that continue to influence me today.”

After earning a business degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Faith explored a variety of career paths. Her résumé includes roles as a radio DJ and VJ in Hong Kong, a food and beverage manager at a luxury hotel, and a brand ambassador

Yet through every chapter, one passion remained constant: creating memorable experiences for people. That passion led her to join her husband, chef and restaurateur Wes Choplin, in growing Choplin’s Restaurant.

Together, they recently launched The Guesthouse in Huntersville, bringing a fresh concept inspired by Faith’s worldwide travels and love of hospitality.

“My goal is to create experiences that make people excited about seeing the world,” she shares. “Whether it’s through the atmosphere, the food, or the feeling they leave with, I want people to feel inspired and alive.”

Faith credits much of her inspiration to her mother, whom she describes as the ultimate example of balancing family and career. An interior designer and businesswoman, her mother created a home filled with warmth, gatherings, and lasting memories while maintaining a thriving professional life.

Today, Faith strives to carry those same values into both her family and business. She is the proud mother of a 28-year-old son and is also blessed with three bonus children through her marriage to Wes. Her life has been shaped by defining moments, including winning the Miss Philippines competition despite being painfully shy and later navigating the profound loss of her parents. Through both experiences, she gained confidence, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for the values that continue to guide her.

During the estate planning process, you will need to decide whether to bequeath an inheritance outright, in a lifetime trust, in a “staggered age” trust, or a combination.

For purposes of simplicity, your child is the sole beneficiary at your death.

OUTRIGHT BEQUEST

LIFETIME TRUST

Your child has complete control over the inheritance.

The title may be in the child’s sole name or owned jointly with any person, with or without survivorship.

A lifetime trust is used to ensure that your child’s inheritance passes to your grandchild at your child’s death.

With complete control, your child may give or bequeath all or any portion of the inheritance to whomever the child wants, including the child’s spouse.

What if your child dies and bequeaths all of the child’s inheritance to the child’s spouse, and then the child’s surviving spouse remarries? The remarried spouse may give the inheritance to a second spouse at his/her later death or to children born to the second marriage that are favored over the children of your deceased child.

An inheritance is not subject to division between your child and her/his spouse under equitable distribution provided the inheritance is not merged with marital assets. North Carolina is a common law state.

A lifetime trust provides the child with creditor protection.

A lifetime trust provides protection from equitable distribution.

Trust distributions are governed by the Trust Agreement. For example, your child may receive all or a portion of the income of the trust. The child’s lineal descendants may be secondary beneficiaries of the trust. Principal may be distributed only to supplement the child’s other financial resources or for the child’s health, education, support, and maintenance.

Trust assets are invested based on the child’s needs and reasonable lifestyle.

The Trust Agreement usually provides that at the child’s death, the remaining trust assets pass to the child’s lineal descendants, outright or in trust. It is extremely rare that in-laws are permissible beneficiaries. The in-law will inherit from the in-law’s own family, while your assets will pass ultimately to your family.

STAGGERED AGE TRUST A middle ground is to retain an inheritance in trust until the beneficiary attains specified ages.

For example, the child may withdraw 1/3 of the trust property when the child attains age 28, 50% of the remainder at age 32, and the remainder at age 36. If the child withdraws 1/3 of the trust property at age 28 and spends the assets foolishly, then hopefully the child will learn from her/his mistakes and use the remaining withdrawals wisely.

Distributions may be made to the child and the child’s lineal descendants for health, education, maintenance, and support. Between distributions, the trust assets are protected from creditors and from equitable distribution.

Serve it surrounded by dippers for every taste: vanilla wafers, animal crackers, pecan sandies, graham crackers, whole wheat crackers, pretzels, celery sticks, or apple slices for a balance of sweet and wholesome options.

½ cup Toffee Pieces ½ cup Crushed Nila Wafers ½ cup Chopped Pecans ⅓ cup White Chocolate Chips ⅓ cup Mini Milk Chocolate Chips

I like the mix of white and milk chocolate in this recipe, but I encourage you to use whatever you enjoy most! Dark chocolate goes well with this dip, too. Sometimes I even mix the chips INTO the cheeseball and simply cover with chopped pecans.

You can certainly make this dessert cheeseball up to a day in advance, simply follow through step 2 and place it in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to serve, finish with step 3.

cheese, butter, pudding, toffee pieces, and Nila wafers in a large bowl. Fold together until well combined.

2 Scoop the cheeseball onto a large sheet of plastic wrap. Gently wrap together, forming a ball. Place the wrapped ball in the refrigerator to harden for 1 - 2 hours.

3 When you’re

ready to serve, unwrap the cheeseball and roll around on a plate with the chopped pecans, white and milk chocolate chips.

Serve on a platter with desired dippers.

Building a business that combines retail, furniture, gifts, and interior design services meant thinking beyond traditional retail models; and like many entrepreneurs, Michael’s journey required equal parts creativity, determination, and faith. Over time, he and Kim developed a concept that allows customers to shop for a single accessory, furnish an entire room, or work with designers on a full-home transformation. “We’ve always believed people deserve more than a transaction,” he says.

“They deserve someone who listens, understands their needs, and helps them create a space they’ll enjoy every day.”

What began as a passion for helping people create homes they truly love has grown into one of Lake Norman’s most distinctive design destinations. Through Knotty & Board’s Davidson Décor & Gift Boutique and Langtree’s Knotty & Board Furniture Market, owner Michael Fournier and wife Kim Hankins have built a business centered on thoughtful design, personal relationships, and the belief that a home should reflect the people who live there.

Rather than focusing solely on furniture or décor, they have created an experience that blends inspiration, functionality, and expert guidance. “We wanted to create a place where people felt comfortable exploring ideas and discovering their style,” Michael smiles.
