IN-CHIEF
APRIL HAS BECOME A TENDER MONTH FOR ME.
It holds my mother’s birthday, and in the five years since she passed away, spring has carried emotions I never expected. The season changes, flowers bloom, and all at once I begin thinking about her birthday, Mother’s Day, my parents’ anniversary, and then the anniversary of losing her. For a long time, I honestly wondered if I would ever feel joy in spring again.
Grief has a way of making even beautiful things feel heavy. But one of the greatest gifts my mother left me was her understanding of joy. She taught us that happiness comes and goes. It can be as quick as one of those afternoon spring storms in North Carolina. Joy is different. Joy lives deeper. It stays even when life hurts.
My mother had a deep faith. People often said she was larger than life, and she truly was. She loved deeply, laughed loudly, and wrote beautifully. She was the best writer I have ever known. Her words carried warmth, wisdom, and honesty, and I still hear her voice in so many moments of my life.
I think one reason joy returned is because I realized I could carry part of her forward. Telling stories mattered deeply to her, and now it matters deeply to me. Sharing her story and the stories of the women of Lake Norman feels like a way to honor that gift every day.
LKNw TEAM
One verse that means more to me now than ever is 3 John 1:4 (NIV):
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”
If spring feels heavy for you too, I hope you know joy can still grow there. Sometimes the most meaningful joy comes in seasons we never expected. w

April
IN THE
IN THE
LAKE NORMAN AREA,
April feels like a collective exhale for gardeners. After months of watching the weather and waiting for the soil to warm, spring planting season is finally underway. Our region sits in USDA Hardiness Zone 8a, which means relatively mild winters and a long growing season—but it also means gardeners must stay mindful of those last unpredictable cold snaps.

SPRING PLANTING TIPS FOR LAKE NORMAN GARDENERS
While early April can still bring the occasional chilly morning, the average last frost date around the Lake Norman and Charlotte area is typically between April 5–10. Once that window passes, the garden opens up with possibilities.
Early in the month, it’s the perfect time to focus on preparing beds and refreshing soil. Winter rain and dormant months can leave soil compacted or depleted, so adding compost or organic matter helps restore nutrients and improve drainage. Raised beds especially benefit from topping off soil before new plants go in. A layer of mulch around existing perennials will also help retain moisture and suppress early weeds.
For vegetable gardeners, April is when warm-season planting begins. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, and beans can all be planted outdoors once nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 50 degrees. If you’ve started seedlings indoors, gradually introducing them to outdoor conditions—known as hardening off—helps prevent transplant shock.
Herbs thrive this time of year as well. Basil, parsley, cilantro, and thyme grow beautifully in Lake Norman gardens and containers alike. For those short on space, patio planters or
sunny windowsills can become productive mini herb gardens throughout the season.
"With
our last frost usually arriving in early April, Lake Norman gardeners can finally begin planting tomatoes, herbs, and warm-season vegetables."
Flower gardeners also have plenty to look forward to. April is ideal for planting annuals like zinnias, cosmos, and marigolds, which not only add vibrant color but attract beneficial pollinators. Pollinator-friendly gardens are especially valuable in our region, helping support butterflies and native bees that play an important role in local ecosystems.
Finally, take a moment to step back and observe the garden as it wakes up. New growth is emerging on shrubs, perennials are pushing through the soil, and birds and pollinators are returning. Gardening in April isn’t just about planting—it’s about setting the tone for the months ahead.
With the soil warming and longer days arriving, Lake Norman gardens are officially open for the season. A little preparation now can lead to months of beauty, fresh herbs, and homegrown vegetables all summer long. w
Melissa Vincent ORAL CANCER SURVIVOR
ECHOING FAITH, HOPE, & HEALING
One Woman’s Powerful Voice
APRIL IS ORAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, and for Melissa Vincent—a local wife, mom, writer, and oral cancer survivor — there’s no better time to bring light to her story. “My son Ryan can confirm I’m the loudest mom cheering in the bleachers,” she laughs. “But nowadays, I’m using my voice to help oral cancer patients navigate their own journeys with the disease.” Melissa explained her cancer diagnosis led to a glossectomy, a surgery in which half of her native tongue was removed and reconstructed using a flap of skin from her wrist.
With a communication degree from Purdue University, a certificate in Social Impact Storytelling from Georgetown, and a memoir writing class through Davidson Learns under her belt, Melissa has always been drawn to the power of words. She gratefully continues to spread her message by leading Bible studies, speaking publicly for oral cancer education and advocacy, and writing with passion and purpose.
“I created a website called SimplySpokenLife.com as a platform to share more about my experience with oral cancer and about my Christian faith,” Melissa says. Her storytelling blends honest details about the raw emotions of diagnosis and recovery with stories of hope, grace, and perseverance.
“Today I celebrate my postoperative scars. I believe they are my greatest storybook,” she says.
Melissa’s efforts recently expanded through a partnership with White, Haines, & Rodrigues Advanced Dentistry in Cornelius where she and Dr. Claire Rodrigues hosted a free oral cancer screening day in March. Through events like this, they extend free education and early detection while also giving folks an opportunity to voice concerns regarding their own oral health.
“I’ve never been at a loss for words,” she smiles, “and being an oral cancer survivor has given me so much more to say to others.” Whether through writing, speaking, or leading with her faith, Melissa is motivated to speak words of inspiration and hope using, what she calls, her new tongue. w
Melissa’s storytelling space, Simply Spoken Life, invites readers to learn, donate, volunteer, and connect. For more information and updates on screenings and other oral health events, visit www.simplyspokenlife.com and www.oralcancerfoundation.org.
BE CURIOUS. Be Brave. BE SCRAPPY.
ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO, our dog Roxie came through the doggie door with a bloody nose. With the urgency of a first-time parent, my daughter (Roxie’s human mom) scooped her up and off to the vet we went. The diagnosis: snake bite. Fortunately, not poisonous, but still ... yikes!
Once we were sure Roxie was fine, we were on the lookout for the offender. No sign of the sneaky serpent until the day I was late for an appointment and running out the back door through the garage. There he was, mocking me, curled up next to the black garden hose.
You can’t exactly leave the house with a snake in the garage, so I grabbed a leaf rake. This was a relocation mission, not a battle to the death, but the snake had other plans—slithering behind storage racks, under the car, and back again. Eventually, I think it’s fair to say, he got tired of me and left on his own accord. I’m claiming it as a win!
I've always seen myself as confident, capable, independent, and practical as I was raised by
a dad who believed daughters should know how to change a tire and manage a snake. But moments like these remind me of a quieter truth: when you're the only adult in the house, everything falls on your shoulders. It's not that you can't do it all, it’s that you must.
Who’s going to hold the ladder when the smoke detector chirps at 4 a.m.?
These aren’t just tasks. They are symbols of the invisible weight of being alone. Even if a past relationship wasn’t what you needed or deserved, the absence of a partner can sneak up on you in unexpected ways.
And in those moments, a question creeps in: Am I really all alone in this? Here’s what I’ve learned.
GROW:
Learn the things you never had to do alone before. You can mow the lawn, take a solo trip, negotiate the car purchase. Be curious. Be scrappy. Be brave.
ASK FOR HELP:
Even when it feels hard. That friend who says, “Let me know if you need anything.” Let them know. You don’t lose strength by leaning on others. You don’t lose independence by asking for a hand. You’re not weaker for needing community. You’re human.
EVEN IF A PAST RELATIONSHIP WASN’T WHAT YOU NEEDED OR DESERVED, THE ABSENCE OF A PARTNER CAN SNEAK UP ON YOU IN UNEXPECTED WAYS.
Who’s going to drive you home after your colonoscopy?
Who’s going to help you chase the snake?
Because the hardest part isn’t chasing a snake around the garage, it’s standing alone in your kitchen at night trying to believe you’re enough. But when you grow and ask, it stretches your skills, softens your pride, and you begin to build a life that rests on you ... and you ARE enough! w

The EBO2 Full-Body Detox
IN THE WORLD OF HOLISTIC wellness and longevity, a groundbreaking therapy is making a splash right here in the Lake Norman region. Renew Specialty Group now offers EBO2, a cutting-edge, full-body detox treatment that goes far beyond traditional cleanses, offering a detailed, medical-grade approach to improving your body’s inner ecosystem.
What is EBO2?
EBO2, short for Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation, is an advanced therapeutic procedure that gently circulates a patient’s blood through a specialized system designed to filter out toxins and introduce a precise blend of medical-grade oxygen and ozone before returning that blood back to the body. Think of it as a high-tech “oil change” for your circulatory system, cleansing, oxygenating, and rejuvenating from the inside out.
Unlike more surface-level detox methods, EBO2 works at the bloodstream level. Over the course of a treatment session, a significant portion of your blood is processed through advanced filtration, nutrient dosing, oxygenation, and controlled ozonation. By targeting blood quality directly, where every cell in your body ultimately draws its sustenance, this therapy supports a profound detoxification process, heightened oxygen delivery, and immune modulation.
Patients Who Seek Deeper Wellness
Who is this treatment for? While people turn to EBO2 for a variety of goals, many seek it when they’re ready for more than a standard cleanse or lifestyle change: fatigue that won’t budge, chronic inflammation, sluggish metabolism, immune challenges, mental fog, or just that intangible sense that their body needs a reset. By removing inflammatory proteins, excess lipids, cellular waste, and environmental toxins, EBO2 gives the body a fresh start, something many patients describe as an internal “refresh” that affects how they feel across the day.
But EBO2 isn’t just about removal. The process also delivers a boost in oxygenation and stimulates cellular pathways tied to energy production, immune responsiveness, and metabolic efficiency, all foundations of long-term wellbeing.

At the heart of the program is Katherine Armitage, Club & Kids Program Manager, who has led the program for years with passion, imagination,

For parents, the program offers peace of mind as well as joy — knowing their children are spending summer days in a welcoming environment led by someone who truly understands kids and cares about their development.
“We try to create a place where kids feel like this is their second home,” Katherine explains. “I want them to come in excited every morning and leave feeling proud of what they created or learned that day.”
Katherine’s longterm leadership has allowed her to build meaningful relationships with families year after year. Many children return each summer, growing up alongside the program and forming bonds that extend beyond the season.
“Seeing kids come back summer after summer is incredibly special,” she says. “You really get to know them — their interests, their strengths, and what makes them smile.”
The Summer Kids Program has also become an important part of the club’s appeal to prospective members, highlighting the club’s commitment to family life and community connection. “This program isn’t just about keeping kids busy, it’s about creating memories and building a sense of belonging,” Katherine adds.
As summer unfolds, the program continues to be a place where children feel inspired, friendships flourish, and families experience the heart of what makes Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club so special. w
WHEN DESIGN MEETS ADVOCACY
a tool helping kids be heard
APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH, but for many families, awareness is something we live every day. Autism advocacy is both personal and close to my heart since my son was diagnosed with autism at age five, connected to a rare genetic condition called SETD1B.
Around that time, I had been following the advocacy work of fellow autism mom and designer Jen WhiteJohnson, whose work elevates neurodivergent voices. Inspired by her advocacy for her son, I reached out about collaborating on a tool that could support other families facing similar challenges. As the graphic designer for Lake Norman Woman, design is also my passion and my way of communicating. I know how powerful thoughtful design can be in helping organize information.
Structured in a colorful, magazine-style format that feels engaging rather than clinical, The Advocazine reflects something I’ve learned throughout my career as a designer: thoughtful design can make complex ideas more approachable. Through guided prompts it helps children explore how they learn, communicate, and experience the world.
Together, we created The Advocazine, a self-advocacy tool designed to help children better understand themselves and communicate their needs.
grown far beyond what we imagined. Today, The Advocazine is used by multiple school systems, private therapy centers, and hundreds of families across the country.
The tool was also designed for children who may not yet be able to articulate these needs themselves. Parents, caregivers, or therapists can help complete the pages based on their observations, creating a starting point that gives educators and support teams insight into a child’s strengths and sensitivities. What began as a resource created by two mothers hoping to support our own children has

LIFE inFULLBloom
Time has a funny way of coming full circle.
For Dr. S. Rene Benson, that realization often appears in the eyes of her young patients whose parents once sat in her exam room themselves.
“Knowing that I am now a multigenerational doctor is mindblowing,” she says. “What bigger compliment could there be?”
WRITER LESLIE OGLE PHOTOGRAPHER CHELSEA BREN
AS THE FOUNDING PEDIATRICIAN OF Mooresville Pediatric and Adolescent Care, with Piedmont HealthCare, Dr. Benson has spent more than two decades caring for families across the Lake Norman region. What began as a childhood dream to become a pediatrician has grown into a career built on trust, compassion, and the rare privilege of walking alongside families through some of life’s earliest (and most important!) moments.
Bloom“I grew up in a small town in West Virginia,” she shares. “As a very young child of divorce, I was raised primarily by my mother and older sister. I learned early on what it meant to be a strong, independent female supported by other strong women.”
Her family eventually grew when her stepfather joined their lives. Those early experiences shaped Dr. Benson’s outlook on resilience and independence— qualities that would guide her through medical school and beyond.
“When I began my college search, I thought I wanted to attend a large co-ed school until I visited Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Virginia. As a higher academic institution designed specifically to support the further development of women, it appealed to me. It allowed me to grow both academically and personally, preparing me well for medical school.”
Dr. Benson attended West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed her pediatrics residency at the University of Kentucky. It was during her residency that she first learned about Piedmont HealthCare.
“While at the University of Kentucky, I learned of Piedmont HealthCare from another pediatric resident,” she says. “As I listened to her discuss the position, I thought to myself, ‘Sounds like the perfect fit’ … although a year too early.”
Fortunately, the timing eventually worked out. When Dr. Benson began her own job search, another pediatric position had opened within Piedmont HealthCare in Statesville.
“The position with PHC fulfilled all my professional and personal goals,” she says. “I wanted a physician-owned group where I would have the opportunity to build a practice with the appropriate support and mentorship for longterm success, and I wanted to live and serve in a smaller community where I could make a genuine connection and impact.”
Soon after relocating to Statesville in 2002, she met her husband, Jason. The two married in 2004 and now share life with their son, Hudson. “My husband has always been my biggest support,” she smiles. “Without him, I would not have been able to build and sustain the successes I have been so blessed to achieve.”
Over the past 30 years, PHC has grown significantly while staying true to its physician-led roots. The original 43 shareholders envisioned a multi-specialty practice dedicated to providing excellent, comprehensive care for the Iredell community. Today, PHC has expanded into one of the largest and most trusted medical organizations in North Carolina and the Southeast, with more than 70 locations.
“There have been many wonderful people through the years who have helped my practice evolve into what it is today,” she says. “As the next chapter unfolds, I am looking forward to seeing how my amazing staff and nurse practitioner, Cassie Freeland, will continue
building upon the service and excellence of care our patients and families expect. After almost 24 years of practice, I am still energized by the relationships I have built with my patients and their families. I never take for granted the privilege it is to be entrusted with their medical care.”
Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming something, but about unbecoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can step into who you were always meant to be.”
Outside the office, Dr. Benson enjoys the simple pleasures in life including a love for birdwatching. “I have turned into a bit of a bird nerd,” she says. “I enjoy studying different birds and identifying them by their calls. It satisfies my nerdy science self and keeps me in the present moment.”
Dr. Benson also understands the importance of giving back to the community. For nearly two years, she and her son Hudson have been active in the Young Men’s Service League of Lake Norman (YMSL), a
mother and son program designed to develop leadership and a spirit of service in high school boys. Each year, they complete at least 20 hours of community service at various local philanthropies, including Bags of Hope, Bridge of Hearts, Cool Kids Campaign, The Christian Mission, the Mooresville Kindness Closet, Feed NC, and others.
At the end of the day, Dr. Benson is deeply grateful for the journey that has brought her full circle to the dream she held as a child. “Because of the support I’ve had,” she reflects, “I’ve been able to return to the girl who simply wanted to be a doctor and care for kids. Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming something, but about unbecoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can step into who you were always meant to be.” w

GALA
HEARTwith
supporting FOSTER LOVE ADOPT REPEAT
LAKE NORMAN WOMAN MAGAZINE is proud to announce that Foster Love Adopt Repeat (FLAR) has been selected as the nonprofit partner for the 2nd Annual Lake Norman Woman of the Year Gala, taking place Friday, September 25, at The Brawley Estate in Mooresville.
The Lake Norman Woman of the Year Gala is an evening dedicated to celebrating the women who lead, serve, and inspire throughout our community while supporting organizations making a meaningful local impact.
Founded in 2018 by Jeremy and Alyse Breger, FLAR is dedicated to ensuring that no child walks through foster care alone and that no family feels unsupported. The organization works to raise awareness, provide resources, and meet the needs of children in foster care and the families who care for them.
“Our heart has always been to come alongside children and families in foster care in practical, meaningful ways,” said co-founder Alyse Breger. “Sometimes that looks like meeting an immediate need, and sometimes it’s simply reminding a child or caregiver that they are not alone.”
Through programs such as First Night Bags and First Night Pizza, FLAR helps children entering foster care feel welcomed and supported from the very beginning. Youth-focused initiatives—including Thrive, Driven, and Rise—create opportunities for growth, mentorship, and connection. For caregivers, programs like Foster Your Soul, support groups, and scholarships offer
encouragement and resources to help them continue their important work.
“We believe every child deserves stability, support, and people who believe in them,” Alyse said. “Our community plays a huge role in making that possible.”
The 2026 Gala also marks a special milestone as Lake Norman Woman Magazine celebrates 20 years of highlighting the remarkable women of our community. Guests can once again expect an unforgettable evening at The Brawley Estate filled with connection, celebration, and purpose as extraordinary women are honored and funds are raised to support Foster Love Adopt Repeat.
Those who wish to support the organization can donate to FLAR, where 100 percent of donations go directly toward the organization’s mission. As Alyse puts it, “Not everyone can foster or adopt, but everyone can do something.”

EASTER
BRUNCH Bites
Easter brunch calls for dishes that feel special without keeping you tied to the stove all morning. These mini quiche cups are hopping onto your table with smoky bacon, sweet onion, and creamy eggs tucked perfectly into flaky phyllo shells. Make them ahead so you can spend more time hunting Easter eggs, sipping coffee, and enjoying the holiday with family.
BACON & ONION QUICHE IN PHYLLO CUPS
INGREDIENTS:
30 Mini Phyllo Shells, 1 ½ inches in diameter
3 Eggs
⅓ cup Half and Half
¾ cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese
2 tbsp. Real Bacon Bits
1 tsp. Dried Minced Onion
Fresh Chives, for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS:
Place phyllo shells on baking sheet. In a mixing bowl, beat together eggs, half and half, cheese, bacon bits and onion.
Spoon 2 teaspoons of filling into each shell. Bake at 375oF until quiches puff and turn slightly brown or about 15-20 minutes.
Garnish with fresh chives, if desired.
notes:
I prefer to use regular half and half in this recipe, but you can certainly use fat free if that’s what you have on hand. These can also be made in regular sized phyllo shells. Simply adjust the cooking time to accommodate the larger sizes, adding about 5-6 minutes.

WE’RE USUALLY ALL ABOUT HIGHLIGHTING WOMEN, BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN, WE PASS THE MIC.
In our column In His Own Words, we invite local men to share their stories, insights, and a bit of their personality. From doctors and dentists to entrepreneurs and realtors, these professionals are part of the fabric of our community—and they’ve got something to say. This month, meet Chef Bill Schutz of Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse as he gives us a glimpse into his world.
in HIS own words
A TASTE OF DESTINY
“I grew up in a small fishing town where I learned early on that what we put into our bodies truly matters. My career began as a line cook, building skills the hard way one shift at a time. Everything changed when I dined at Chef David Bouley’s restaurant in New York City. That meal was life-altering. I was invited into the kitchen to meet him, and he hired me on the spot. Under his mentorship, I learned every corner of the kitchen and worked my way up, discovering not just how to cook, but how to create an experience for every guest.”
TRAVEL, TEACHING, & CONNECTION
“I moved my family to the Charlotte area and opened Bentley’s on 27th, where I also discovered a deep love for teaching at Johnson & Wales. Sharing knowledge became just as fulfilling as cooking. Through that work, I met Master Chef John Sloan, who invited me to Singapore to train airline chefs in plating and molecular gastronomy. That experience broadened my vision and continues to influence my dishes today, especially our signature salmon entrée. Traveling, teaching, and learning reminded me that food is a universal language— one that connects people across cultures and moments.”
“Dining should be an experience, not just a meal. We host cocktail classes, wine and bourbon dinners, and tasting menus pairing creative pours with elevated cuisine, while Chef Bill’s off-menu specials encourage guests to step outside their comfort zone. Beyond the table, we support local youth sports, the Davidson Community Players, and partner with rescue organizations to help shelter dogs find forever homes. Giving back—through food, friendship, or furry companions—is simply who we are.”
A PERFECT PAIRING
TURNING TRAGEDY INTO TRIUMPH
“When Chef Bouley sent me to Paris to train in Michelinstarred kitchens like Arpège, it pushed me beyond anything I thought possible. I returned as Chef de Cuisine and spent years refining my craft at his flagship restaurant. My final menu from that time still hangs at Flatiron, signed by Chef Bouley himself, and it reminds me where I came from. Afterward, I became a partner at a West Village restaurant called Midway. We were thriving until September 11 changed everything. That tragedy reshaped my path and strengthened my resolve to build something meaningful.”
“One night, while celebrating my daughter’s 16th birthday, I dined at Flatiron and saw its potential instantly. I knew I could bring something special to the Lake Norman community, and that decision changed my life again. Today, Flatiron is home. I focus on clean eating, thoughtful composition, and partnerships with local farmers and vendors for meat, produce, and fish. Cooking has always been about passion, integrity, and connection for me. I love meeting guests and sharing my story, my food, and my gratitude with the community that welcomed me so warmly.” w

The Psychology OF SPRING
WHY WE FEEL LIGHTER WHEN THE WORLD TURNS GREEN
THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE AIR when spring arrives … and it’s not just the pollen! With warmer temps and blooming colors, our minds react in kind. We shed heavy layers, fling open windows, and let the sunshine in. Spring fever is real, and it comes with a rush of energy, optimism, and curiosity. The season doesn’t just change the landscape; it rewires the way our brains work. Psychologists agree that longer days and brighter light boost motivation and creativity. Here are a few reasons why spring feels like a reset button for the soul. w
