PROJECT

PHASE 1 - URBAN DESIGN ANALYSIS

In preparation for our final project, we began by conducting an analysis of the site. Through in-person obervations, transit studies, and photo collages, we could begin to think about and design the framework for our coop and the spaces we would be creating.

FINAL PROJECT PHASE 2 - LIVE WORK CO-OP

The Textile House

Each group of two in our studio section was tasked with designing a workshop and residences for the various types of clients we were working with.

With our clients being clothing designers, my partner and I decided to design a long workshop that bisected both residences. Not only did this design strategy serve as a way of welcoming individuals into the plaza and vice versa; we also created a dynamic space that could be transformed into a runway, with 37th Ave serving as an outdoor public street theater.

ADAPTIVE REUSE: THE COLONNADE

Located at the winding intersection of Concord St., Vinial St., Ahlers Way, and Spring Garden Ave in the North Allegheny Neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, The Colonnade - On Spring Garden Avenue; or just The Colonnade, looks to augment the Pittsburgh experience for visitors and locals alike.

An adaptive re-use project, the hostel is built in and around the shell of an old shoe factory. Pittsburgh has a rich industrial history, particularly in steel manufacturing.

Throughout the program, there are intentional spaces made for commoning. Hostels draw people from all over the world, and are sought after for their ability to bring said people together. From the game room on the lower level, to the library and kitchen spaces, all of these common spaces surround two courtyards and straddle the South facing shell wall. The hardscape courtyard is meant to invite those on foot and bike into the site. Upon entry, one is able to turn right and continue to the community meeting room and café; or, turn left and transition through to the more private hostel game room- which is demarcated by the existing elevator shaft as well as the elevation change from the public program to the private; almost like a portal.

The interior courtyard is an immediate change in ground tactility, becoming a lush rectangular landscape that seemingly grows up and over the wall. Small cuts in the shell provide a glimpse for outsiders as to what this space is like; however, you must “pierce” the façade to experience it. The long colonnades on both side of the shell wall allow for that sort of experience, and also serve as outdoor circulation. These colonnades are internalized on the second level, and allow for a conditioned view of the courtyards and surrounding area. With regards to public and private spaces- these are clearly delineated through the maintenance of the South facing wall. This additional artifact serves as a divider and threshold between the two types of program, and is only pierced in one location. These locations, as previously mentioned, result from the organization created by the old elevator shaft. The exposed structural trusses through the project allows for the creation of large, inviting volumes; drawing the viewer to sit in one of the indoor patios and reflect in the shadows of the various beams and columns.

Polar Perspectives utilizes photographer LaToya Ruby Frazier’s methods of extreme macro to extreme micro in her work to capture distinct moments in Braddock, PA from intentionally different perspectives. Doing so is meant to highlight the proximity of the Edgar Thompson Steel Works to residential and civic spaces, while showcasing the fortitude of a community that must continually straddle the extremes of society against their will.
