LAKELAND SOFTBALL

About Lakeland L akeland S oftball

Welcome to Lakeland Community College, the first college in Ohio founded by a vote of the people. As a college, we take great pride in providing students with the education and training needed to earn a degree, start a career, upgrade job skills or complete the first two years of college education. In addition, it is essential for the college to provide students with opportunities to enhance their college experiences through participation in athletics or on-campus student organizations.

When it comes to athletics, Lakeland has an outstanding history of its teams and players performing at the highest level. Our coaches are top-notch and our studentathletes always strive for excellence on the field, on the court, and especially in the classroom. Whether you are a participant or a spectator, thank you for supporting Lakeland’s intercollegiate athletic programs. Sit back and enjoy another exciting, fast-paced season!

Morris W. Beverage Jr., E.D.M. President

Scott M. Barlow, Athletic Director and Athletic Facility Manager “Academic success for every student-athlete is the ultimate goal of the athletic department at Lakeland Community College,” says athletic director Scott Barlow. “We believe that success in athletics can support success in the classroom and, ultimately, a successful life.”

“We are proud of the fact that we led the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference in academic award winners in 200809. We also had two NJCAA Academic All-Americans and an NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American.” Barlow was named Lakeland’s athletic director during the summer of 2000. He brought with him an extensive educational and practical background in teaching, coaching, and administration.

Women from around the country will strap on their cleats for the tournament. Her coaching career includes stints as an assistant with Kent State and as the head coach at Lake Erie College (NCAA Division II) in nearby Painesville, Ohio. Sargent is also no stranger to Lakeland academics. She has been on the faculty at Lakeland for the past 19 years, teaching health and safety classes. Judy Sargent enters her ninth season leading the Lakeland softball program in the spring of 2013. In 2009, she surpassed the 100-win mark as a college coach in just her fifth year with the Lakers. A three-time Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) coach of the year, Sargent directed Lakeland to a share of the league title in 2011. In the summer of 2012, she was selected to coach high school all-stars in New York City by Triple Crown Sports, which venues high school athletes from throughout the United States and Canada.

Jeff Loga joined the Lakeland coaching staff in the fall of 2008 and enters his fifth season as an assistant with the program. Loga, who’s primary focus is the pitchers and catchers, has worked extensively in the Lake County area with youth softball players. During Lakeland’s conference-winning 2011 season, Loga helped his daughter, Leah, go 12-5 with a 2.38 ERA en route to all-conference honors. In addition to his duties at Lakeland, Loga works with the 18U travel club the Hurricanes. He currently resides in Painesville Township with his wife, Amy.

BATTERY Lakeland’s ace, Kara Fitzgerald (Willowick), returns for her sophomore season after leading the team in appearances, innings pitched, ERA, wins, and strikeouts in her inaugural campaign. The right-hander is complemented by freshman southpaw Morgan Redmond (Wakeman), who will provide the Lakers with added depth and a viable second option in the circle.

INFIELD Sophomore first baseman Amanda Walsh (Painesville) returns as one of the top hitters in all of Region 12 after hitting .464 with 30 RBIs in her first collegiate season. Walsh earned all-conference honors as a freshman when she led the team in nearly every offensive category. Freshman Alex Ungrady (Mayfield) will back her up at first and also see time at the hot corner in her first year with the Lakers. Sophomores Kelsey Ott (Euclid) and Skylar Lund (Quincy, Wash.) will compete at second base while incoming freshmen Aubrey Szalay (Euclid) and Shayla Purnell (Kent) will vie for time at shortstop. Ott saw action in 27 games as a freshman infielder while Lund looks to make an immediate contribution after a year at Corban University in Salem, Oregon. Sophomore Randi Woodworth (Orwell) and newcomer Chantel Smithberger (Madison) will see time at third base with Walsh’s transition to first. Woodworth hit .345 in 29 games as a freshman infielder and posted a .474 on-basepercentage. OUTFIELD Sophomores Alyssa Woltman (Painesville) and Katie Payne (Mentor) will occupy left and center field, respectively, as two of Lakeland’s most veteran outfielders. Woltman was at or near the top in a slew of offensive categories among freshmen including doubles, hits, and runs. Payne provides speed in the field and on the bases, where she was a perfect 11-for-11 in steal attempts as a freshman. Freshmen Ashley Alnadi (Lyndhurst) and Melissa Algeri (South Euclid) will contend in right field.
