For almost two centuries, Southeastern Wisconsin has been a beloved destination for thousands of Chicagoans. Business moguls, politicians, gangsters, media stars, and luminaries such as William Wrigley Jr., as well as thousands of individuals and families who have consistently made Lake Geneva, or one of our surrounding villages or towns, their very own second city. As the area’s leading real estate brokerage for over 75 years, we have had the pleasure of working with and getting to know our friends and neighbors from the greater Chicagoland area for generations. Learning their stories and helping some of them make their dreams a reality is one of the most rewarding things we do. In honor of our friends from the south, and the great city of Chicago itself, we thought it would be fun to dedicate this summer’s issue of Lake & Country to this special relationship. How did it start in the first place? What are the stories of the people who live in both places? Why do they keep coming back, weekend after weekend, summer after summer, and year after year? Of course, we couldn’t answer every question or explore all the nuances, but we hope you enjoy these stories, and we hope that when you put down this magazine, you will have a better understanding of why our beloved area is so cherished by Chicagoans. KEEFE KARES

For the last 100 years, the Water Safety Patrol has served a vital role in the Lake Geneva community. Their mission? To keep Geneva Lake safe for everyone enjoying the water, and that’s no small feat considering the lake’s enduring popularity. “Geneva Lake is the busiest lake in the state in terms of boats per square mile, and it gets a lot of beach traffic as well,” says Ted Pankau, Operations Director. “There’s also a wide diversity of use. Large boats, small boats, wave runners, canoes, kayaks, tour boats, parasailing— any kind of water activity there is, it’s done here. Therefore, an organization like this is needed to maintain safety.” The Water Safety Patrol dates back to 1920, when founder Simeon B. Chapin recognized a need to help keep Geneva Lake safe as it grew in popularity with locals and visitors alike. “As more people started to come up from the Chicago area, they recognized it was going to get busier on the water and the beaches,” says Pankau. As a result, Chapin and other lake dwellers formed the Water Safety Patrol. 14 | SUMMER 2019 |


“We’re not police officers, so we can’t write tickets, but we can educate people, and that education goes a long way toward improving safety out here.” Ted Pankau, Operations Director

Nearly 100 years later, Water Safety Patrol, the only organization of its kind in the country, now includes 80 seasonal employees who teach swimming programs, provide lifeguard services for ten different Geneva Lake beaches, and man a fleet of six patrol boats. Their staff is made up of both locals and summer home residents, and includes high school and college students and many teachers. Pankau says that many staff members have been returning to the Water Safety Patrol for years. In fact, he himself is a longtime member; he started as a lifeguard while in college, stayed with the organization on busy weekends and holidays while pursuing a marketing and business career, then took over as Operations Director 29 years ago. The Water Safety Patrol requires staff members to undergo extensive training and certification in order to participate, and they are required to engage in practices, drills and inservice trainings all season long to keep their skills sharp. Their training is put to good use. On an average summer day, Water Safety Patrol swim instructors provide lessons at locations around the lake, and the boat crew helms up to five boats — six if there’s a special event such as fireworks or a triathlon. They also provide up to seven lifeguards at each of the lake’s large municipal beaches, as well as at other smaller private beaches in the area. According to Pankau, despite its growth, the organization has stayed true to the Water Safety Patrol’s original ethos: to use education as a tool to keep the area safe. “We’re also out there for on-water education,” he says. “If we see people operating their boat in an unsafe manner, we’ll stop and talk to them and inform them about the rules of the water. We’re not police officers, so we can’t write tickets, but we can educate people, and that education goes a long way toward

improving safety out here.” The idea of education extends to the swim programs as well, which are kept low-cost to ensure accessibility. “We want to teach people how to be safe around the water so we have fewer accidents,” Pankau says. As a non-profit organization, the Water Safety Patrol is funded primarily through private donations from both people who live on or near the lake, and those who visit. The Keefe Kares Foundation, a 501c(3) organization run and supported by Keefe associates has been supporting the Water Safety Patrol organization since the inception of Keefe Kares. The community also helps support the organization through two annual fundraisers: a lakeshore cocktail party, and a summer dinner with dancing and auctions. “This community feels very strongly that our organization is vital to the lake. That’s why they continue to support us every year,” Pankau explains. A series of events is planned to mark the Water Safety Patrol’s centennial, including a past member reunion, boat parties, and commemorative materials. But as they pay tribute to the past, the organization is also looking to the future. “We want to continue to be great and to get better every year,” Pankau says, explaining that they’re always researching new methods, techniques and equipment to improve safety. “We’re already looking ahead to the next 100 years.”

W

ith roughly 80 miles between Chicago and Lake Geneva, the cities are much more than a hop, skip and jump away from each other. But that hasn’t stopped thousands of Chicagoans from migrating to this familial Wisconsin city for nearly two centuries. The just-far-enough distance is all part of the charm. “It’s an escape,” says Chicagoan Kevin Noll, who for the past 15 years has left his condo in Chicago’s Loop behind in order to race to Lake Geneva, where he stays most weekends. “You’re far from city life but still have a little hustle, like golfing and beautiful weather… it’s what I know summertime to be.” The exact number of Chicago residents that own a second home, rent or simply visit the area regularly is hard to pinpoint, says Jim Davis, a

board member and docent at the Geneva Lake Museum in downtown Lake Geneva. But he estimates that 80 percent of lakeside residents come from Chicago. The main factors that tend to attract the Chicago crowd to the small town of Lake Geneva are the direct access to its manicured beaches, the boating culture, the abundance of golf courses, and of course the good old-fashioned peace and quiet.


IT ALL GOES BACK TO 1831

I

t may not come as a surprise to learn that Lake Geneva’s quiet countryside and rippling lake waters were first formally documented by two Chicagoans. Husband and wife John and Juliette Kinzie were living at Fort Dearborn in Chicago, when they got transferred to Fort Winnebago, which was near what is now Portage, Wisconsin. “In 1831, they were the first [non-native Americans] to see the lake and write about it,” says Davis. He explains that on their trips between the two forts, the Kinzies met Potawatomi Indians who were led by Chief Big Foot, and Juliette documented the impactful encounters in her 1856 book, Wau-Bun: The “Early Day” in the North West. The Kinzie’s oral and written histories generated interest and, in 1856, seven Chicagoans headed up and formally founded the city of Lake Geneva, buying 463 acres of land for a bargain price of 1.25 cents per acre. One of the founders, Phillip Maxwell, a physician for the United States Army, built the first mansion up on a hill near the lake, and momentum picked up from there. By 1870, Lake Geneva’s population was 1,700. Chicago’s was 300,000, for comparison. The Chicago & North Western Railroad was built in 1871, connecting downtown Chicago to Williams Bay, right within reach of the boat docks. The line was dubbed the “Millionaire’s Special,” according to Davis, and regularly whisked away what were primarily Chicago’s wealthy elite to their summer cottages on and around Lake Geneva. There were no cars at the time, so travel once they got there consisted of a horse and buggy, or a boat.

he Lake Geneva community of today has certainly diversified. In addition to grand manors, there are modern condos, singlefamily homes, and burgeoning subdivisions that almost mimic Chicago suburbs with their deliberate layout and landscaping. It’s exactly this kind of mix that keeps attracting Chicagoans who might desire anything from a full-time summer residence to an easy spot to hunker down for the occasional weekend. Sarah Cobb, from Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, has owned a home in the Lake

Geneva area for six years. She lives there with her husband and daughter for the entire summer, and visits frequently on weekends year-round. “In college, I remember going up to Lake Geneva from Chicago to visit my friends’ parents, and I slowly got exposed to it all,” she says. “When you live in the city, you always feel like you’re in tight quarters. It’s busy and crazy, you just want an escape. [Here at the lake], things are scenic, relaxed and beautiful. It’s what we need; a vacation experience without getting on an airplane.”


The Cobbs just sold their first home in Lake Geneva and are currently finishing a new build right along the lake. Their new residence will provide direct access to the boating and swimming opportunities they’ve come to love. They’ve also met a community of friends not only in their neighborhood but through many activities that Lake Geneva offers, from sailing camps to festivals and tennis clubs. “It becomes this great place to bring family and friends together,” says Cobb, who recommends joining a country club to get to know community members. Although she loves the social aspect of lake life, her own pace is decidedly slower. “It’s not like you can’t sit around and play board games in the city… but up here it’s more natural and you don’t get caught running errands all weekend.”

GOING THE DISTANCE

A

lthough there’s no longer a direct train from Chicago to Williams Bay (it was stopped due to low ridership), Chicagoans are now making the drive up. Or, if they’re like Kevin Noll, they’re getting creative with their transportation. Noll takes the Union Pacific Northwest Metra train as far up as he can to Harvard, Illinois then gets picked up by his dad, who drives the last leg of the trip. “The Chicago train departs about a block from my house, at Ogilvie station, and stops about 20 minutes away from my dad’s house in Fontana. It’s actually a really simple commute,” says Noll. Things aren’t always so simple if you’re driving from Chicago during rush hour. Cobb says on Friday afternoons her family tries to get out by 4 pm to beat some of the rush. “We get all stressed out in the traffic getting out of the city,” she says. “But once we take the exit for Highway 50 off of I-94 we feel our shoulders relax and get so excited for life at the lake.” The rewards of lake life always prove to be worth the trip. For Cobb, it’s that quieter pace. For Noll, it’s the time he gets to spend with his family; golfing, barbecuing, boating, and helping with projects around the house. “We always go up for Thanksgiving and celebrate as a family. It’s noticeably quieter then but still beautiful and you do get those surprise 50 degree days,” he says.

N

o matter what lures an individual to this lake, renowned for its 22 miles of gorgeous shoreline and rolling hill landscape, one thing is always consistent: When people visit the area once, they keep coming back. That’s true for John Notz, a fourth generation Chicagoan and Air Force veteran who first voyaged up once on a lark because he had scored a spot in a golf club. “I ended up being a member for a long time,” he says. Sure enough, one game became many games, and then it all led to commuting nearly every weekend in the summer to play. When Notz got married, he and his late-wife’s love of the area only increased. “We started staying at local hotels, then renting for short periods of time, then staying the entire season. We really built a life in Lake Geneva,” he says. In 1980, Notz bought a house near his golf club where he lives to this day, in addition to also

owning a condo in Lincoln Park, where he stays during much of the week. He continues the drive up to Lake Geneva all winter long and says that in many ways he prefers the off season. “Restaurants are happy to see you. And now the golf club has lengthened its season,” says Notz. “I have been involved in local civic activities and really have almost all my civic contacts up here. In winter, it’s easier… you can sit and reflect.” Like many who migrate to Lake Geneva, it all comes down to tradition that will be passed down for generations. Notz’s own children are proof. “Everybody in my family lives in Chicago and everybody has a house key to our lake home.” Indeed, the lake lifestyle is worth sharing. Especially by Chicagoans who have found that much-needed quiet escape. Their visits are remembered. They’re special. And they’re as rooted in history as the glistening body of water itself.

nyone fortunate enough to live on the water knows that boating appeals to different people for different reasons: as an escape, as a pleasant environment for a business meeting, or as a sightseeing excursion. But the biggest draw for most is having fun with family and friends. “Boating creates memories that last a lifetime,” says Mike Misch, Sales Manager and Head of Operations for Munson Ski and Marine at its Fontana location. Munson Ski and Marine, with its original location in Round Lake, Illinois and a newer store in Fontana, Wisconsin, has been a one-stop shop for all boating needs for over 60 years. Patriarch Lloyd Munson founded the company with “a passion for the industry,” states Misch. The family-owned and operated business is now continuing unbroken into the third generation. Misch calls the 30+ Munson employees who round out the staff, “some of the best people in the industry.” Munson’s Round Lake location offers new and used boats, a full-service department, a storage facility, a fiberglass shop and detail crew, brokerage services for buying and selling boats, pro shop items, and clinics for waterskiing, wakeboarding, and wake surfing. The four-year-old Fontana location, on the other hand, expands on those services. For those with time constraints, the Fontana staff can provide in-and-out service. The store maintains a small number of boats for hourly, half-day, and fullday rentals. And for those interested in buying a boat, all boats at the Fontana location are available for demo rides. While it might seem obvious that a boat dealership would be an active place in the summer, the employees at Munson Ski and Marine stay busy all year. In fall, end-of-the season boat repairs and refurbishing occupy the attention of the service

department employees. Winter is the season for boat shows and purchasing inventory for the coming year. In spring and early summer, everyone is getting ready to place the boats in the water as soon as the last shard of ice melts on the surrounding lakes. Misch believes that the decades-long success of Munson Ski and Marine is due to the company’s commitment to customer service and their down-to earth manner. “The Munsons bend over backwards to take care of their customers,” he asserts. For generations, Chicagoans have been trading one lake life for pursuit of

the other, spending their summers in Wisconsin at Geneva Lake, rather than the closer Lake Michigan. Bucktown-based Kelly and Marty Pankau can attest to that, since they frequently pack up their young daughters, eight-year-old Misha and three-year-old Zara, and make their way to the Wisconsin border. Their destination: The Little Blue Cottage in the quaint and quiet town of Williams Bay, on Geneva Lake.

elly and Marty have a lifelong affection for the area, instilled in them by their parents and the generations before them, all of whom invested in second homes around Geneva Lake. “Marty and I grew up spending our summers on the lake,” says Kelly. “That’s where we met– on college break– when I was working Water Safety Patrol and Marty was renting boats at Marina Bay.” A few years after graduation, the couple returned to their summer roots, marrying in Lake Geneva at St. Francis de Sales Church and celebrating their reception at the Geneva National Resort & Club. Their careers then took them to Chicago’s loop, where they purchased a

home on the trendy northwest side. “We bought a smaller house in Chicago so that we could better afford a lake home, which was always our goal. Lake Geneva is where our most cherished family memories are, and we wanted to pass that experience on to our children.” After becoming parents, the Pankaus stepped up their quest for a fixer-upper in the Cedar Point Association in Williams Bay. For a while, nothing caught their eyes– or their hearts– until the refurbished Little Blue Cottage came on the market. “It was a bit above our range, so we passed it up at first,” admits Kelly, “but we couldn’t pass up the Open House.” When they walked in, they fell in love … again. “The first thing you notice is how utterly charming the house is,” says Kelly. “It is very much a cottage; likely a kit house copied from a Sears catalog model,” complete with a white picket fence trimmed by flowering native plants. Built in 1924, the storybook home has original wood floors and a substantial wood-burning fireplace built of hefty rocks. Once a single-level, two-bedroom home, the dwelling now features two additional bedrooms and a bath in the converted attic. “My favorite room in the house is the screened-in porch,” says Kelly, who starts her mornings in the openair retreat curled up in a white wicker chair with a cup of Milwaukee-brewed Colectivo coffee. “From the porch, you can hear boats on the water, and in the early morning, the sound of water skiers yelling and cheering. It really feels like lake living.” Because the move-in-ready cottage already checked all the boxes, the Pankaus didn’t do much to make the delightful abode their own, other than

adding a rustic sandbox and a wooden tree-swing, which hangs some 25 feet from a lofty oak in the front yard. (So high, in fact, that it had to be installed by a cherry picker.) While Kelly admits the swing is quite the thrill, Misha and Zara’s most prized element of the Little Blue Cottage is its location. It’s just around the block from their cousins, and only three doors down from Grandma and Grandpa’s summer home. “If the girls see my parents in their driveway when we’re pulling in, they make us drop them off while we unload the car,” says Kelly. “It feels so good to arrive and get started with the weekend fun.” The Pankaus adore their cozy cottage and make it a point to spend as much time enjoying their neighborhood and its surroundings as possible. Utterly committed to this end, they forgo both cable and internet service once they cross the state line. “Our memories of the lake didn’t focus around screen time, and we want to pass that onto our daughters,” says Kelly.

For them, true lake life consists of making a splash off the Cedar Point swimming piers, motoring about the lake in their Chris-Craft Lancer, hiking the Shore Path or the Kishwauketoe trails, and gathering for family cookouts with 20-plus cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents in attendance. “The girls and their cousins are always running back and forth from one of our family houses to another,” says Kelly. “We don’t have any family nearby in the city, but with the cottage, we’re able to make family time a priority.” Other summer highlights for the family include watching the Fourth of July fireworks over the lake, attending Williams Bay’s Corn & Brat Fest, and Misha’s August birthday. “She always picks celebrating with her cousins at the lake versus anything we might do in the city,” says Kelly. Like many other vacationing kids, Misha attends sailing camp at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club and day camp at Covenant Harbor. There’s no doubt about it, summers by the lake are unforgettable, but the winter months in the Geneva Lakes area hold cherished memories of their own and create the possibility for a new season of adventure.

“Misha is obsessed with snow and prays for enough of it to fall so she can go sledding on the Cedar Point hills right by the cottage,” says Kelly. “Marty chops wood and piles it on for a roaring blaze in the fireplace afterward.” For the Pankaus, winter in Wisconsin wouldn’t be complete without the annual London-time New Year’s Eve parade. “We celebrate with whatever cousins and kids we can round up, and march down our street at 6pm with noisemakers, yelling ‘Happy New Year!’” says Kelly. “The kids get the biggest kick out of it.” Despite their best efforts, not everything is the same as when they were kids. As a dual-income couple, they can’t spend every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day at the lake like they did when they were growing up. But still, the trade-off is worth it. “Every week on our way up, when we’re just a few miles from the cottage, our drive takes us through a winding, wooded road in Knollwood,” says Kelly. 76 | SUMMER 2019 |

“The girls know we’re almost there, and are on the lookout for deer, red foxes, or a pack of wild turkeys. They know we are so not in Chicago anymore.” Experiencing treasured time at the lake through the eyes of their daughters allows Kelly and Marty to relive what made Geneva Lake so magical for them. “Last summer, Misha was finally old enough to walk to downtown Williams Bay with her cousins to get ice cream,” says Kelly. “I can still remember when my parents first said it was okay for me to walk downtown with my cousins. And just like my cousin says, ‘It’s so fun seeing our kids hanging out together. It’s like seeing ourselves grow up again.’” The nostalgia for summers gone by with beloved family is what anchors three generations to this enchanting little cove on Geneva Lake. For Kelly and Marty, that is reason enough to make the drive whenever they feel the need to escape urban living and enjoy their idyllic lake life at The Little Blue Cottage.

The company began when Orren, who was a college student, decided to create a small house painting business to help finance tuition and other expenses while attending Bradley University. Over time, Orren graduated to remodeling and building luxury homes with his wife Tina and before long, his small painting business turned into the large firm we know today as Orren Pickell. Now, with nearly a half-century in business, the Orren Pickell Building Group has completed thousands of home projects in Chicago, the North Shore, Southern Wisconsin, and Harbor Country, Michigan. The family-owned and operated business has received over three hundred awards for design excellence and innovation, and in January of 2019 was named the Best Custom Builder for a Traditional Home by Modern Luxury Interiors Chicago magazine. “No job is too big, and no job is too small,” explains Lisa Pickell, the company’s president since 2017. The services Orren Pickell provides range from room remodeling to home building, and the company also offers a custom home maintenance program that sends a team out twice a year to complete homeowners’ “honey-do” lists: providing maintenance on appliances, wrapping and storing patio furniture, checking smoke detectors, touching up paint, and more.

The maintenance program is much appreciated by those who don’t have the time, or aren’t able to complete those tasks, but it is in the remodeling and building sectors that Orren Pickell has truly become a name associated with top-notch construction. The business’s 30 employees, including designers, architects, project managers, accountants, and a sales team, build 8 to 10 new homes and complete 40 remodeling projects each year. And while building a home might seem like a daunting prospect, Orren Pickell’s architects and construction managers work together to make that process as easy as possible for the client.

Designing Your Custom Home with Orren Pickell Orren Pickell’s award-winning designs are created for people to live well in their new homes, and each step in the process works to that end. First, the building group helps clients find a site for the new home, either by choosing a new lot or tearing down an existing home and rebuilding. After that, Orren Pickell guides clients through their wish lists for their new home, resulting in a set of final working drawings. At this point, Orren Pickell designers can recommend showrooms for clients to visit in order to choose lighting, flooring, and other home elements.

Once that process is finished, the project is assigned to a Project Superintendent who meets with the client weekly. Clients can check online photographs of the progress on their own personal and secure website. The custom-built software also includes ongoing time and money reports. Finally, when the home is completed, the Project Superintendent and the Orren Pickell Maintenance Group Manager conduct a final walk-through of the house with the client. After the home closes, another walk-through takes place in 60 days, and yet another one year later. or decades, Lake Geneva has been drawing Chicagoans in, luring them north with the appeal of fresh air and relaxation that is often in short supply in the city. This break from city life can be much needed, like it is for one prominent Chicago attorney and his family. Indeed, the Montgomerys rely on this balance between work in Chicago and relaxation in Lake Geneva. It keeps their lives on an even keel. Barry and Shauna Montgomery’s anchor in Chicago is a three-bedroom condo on the 56th floor of the Trump International Hotel and Tower. From there, Barry can walk to the Willis Tower offices of Williams Montgomery & John Ltd., the commercial litigation firm he co-founded in 1967. The condo also serves as Shauna’s base of operations as mother to their two children, Knox and Meredith, and as stepmother to Brooke, who has two children herself, and Jennifer, who has

five. The Trump condo also serves as the site of much of Shauna’s philanthropic work for Lurie Children’s Hospital, the Joffrey Ballet, the Garfield Park Conservatory, and Films Without Borders. The reality of their lives, says Shauna, is Chicago, where the views from their 3,000 square foot condo are “absolutely exquisite.” With a panorama that includes the Chicago River, the Magnificent Mile, and Lake Michigan, the couple can take in the Chicago Air and Water Show, the dyeing of the Chicago River for St. Patrick’s Day, and the river’s regular kayak and boat parade. “It’s a great place to live,” says Barry, who cites access to the hotel’s amenities, the plethora of outstanding nearby restaurants, and the unit’s privacy as the primary reasons he and Shauna love the condo. But despite the insulated nature of the condo and its magnificent city views, living in the middle of the action means needing, occasionally, to raise anchor and settle in calmer waters. “Down in the city, it’s helter-skelter all the time,” Barry explains. For the last four decades, Lake Geneva, has been Barry’s destination of choice whenever he needs a hiatus from the city and the relentless demands of his law practice. Lucky for him, Shauna has come to love Lake Geneva as well. “Lake Geneva is far enough, yet close enough to the city, [and it’s] a totally different world,” says Barry. “It’s a wonderful respite when you live in Chicago.” Born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and raised in Pittsburgh, Barry was introduced to Lake Geneva as a young lawyer while working at Jacobs & McKenna in Chicago and living in Lake Forest. His friend Jim Abbott, his frequent golf and squash partner, had grown up spending summers at his mother’s house in Lake Geneva. Barry began playing golf with Abbott at the Lake Geneva Country Club in the 1960’s, and in 1980, Barry himself became a member. In 1992, Barry purchased Whippoorwill, a lovely home about four miles from the club, on Geneva Lake’s south shore. Within two years, he and Shauna had started their family. But as Knox and Meredith grew older, Whippoorwill’s downside became apparent. “I felt like I was running a jitney service back and forth to the club for the kids,” says Barry. He and Shauna sold Whippoorwill in 2002, and the family began taking trips abroad to France, Italy, and Croatia. Despite the romantic allure of those places, something was lacking. “We really missed Lake Geneva,” says Shauna. So, in 2003, Barry and Shauna purchased a 50-yearold home in the 700 Club. The main attraction was the property’s location relative to the Lake Geneva Country Club; it was a football field’s length from the front door to the clubhouse. The house, however, was in desperate need of a makeover. 102 | SUMMER 2019 |

The Montgomerys decided to tear down the structure and build a home that suited their tastes and their need for a large entertaining space. Working with Barry and Shauna over the course of a year, Chicago architect Chip von Weise came up with a design that Barry described as pods connected by an atrium. “It’s like a glass house,” explains Barry. “Every room in the house is like you’re living in the outdoors.” Inspired by architect Hugh Newell Jacobson, the 5,000-square-foot home features exterior materials commonly associated with New England summer homes: white clapboard, bluestone, and cedar shakes. The Montgomerys asked Suzanne Lovell to design the interior. “Suzanne captured our ideas on light and views,” says Shauna. “I wanted everything to be really open. Each pod is a room,” she explains. The home’s windows allow its inhabitants to see “all the seasons.”

Slide and Fold doors open the house to the outdoors and the pool area. With Geneva Lake visible from every room, Shauna did not want window treatments to intrude on the view. The master bedroom’s Philippe Stark bathtub, for example, is “right there in the woods” where cardinals and hummingbirds make their homes. Shauna’s philosophy is that a home’s personality comes from the people in it, so she wanted, “a really clean palette” that she described as “white, white, and more white,” while blue accents represent a nod to the lake. All of the elements within the house were kept simple and natural to create, “a serene, peaceful, and calming retreat.” “The house is a gathering place,” says Shauna. In the fall and winter, the family gathers in front of the massive bluestone fireplace to watch the Bears games. Indeed, the Montgomerys spend most of the summer and nearly every weekend together in Lake Geneva, with the Fourth of July marking the traditional weekend when everyone comes together.

Barry is proud to say that his children and grandchildren all grew up in Lake Geneva. “It’s bucolic, with a beautiful lake,” he explains, “and yet there’s so much to do there.” For Barry, however, the real advantage is being able to do as much or as little as he chooses. To him, Lake Geneva is the perfect place to rest and recharge. “I hunker down for the weekend,” Barry says. “I’m not always interested in going out for dinner. I just want to relax and go play a round of golf.” Barry and Shauna are pleased that their Lake Geneva retreat will soon expand to accommodate the next generation of the Montgomery family, since Barry’s daughter Jennifer and her husband Sean have purchased the Lake Geneva home, with Barry retaining a part-interest. After renovation for the next generation, Barry and Shauna will have their own suite, allowing them to continue retreating to Lake Geneva, for more gatherings with the whole family. As Shauna says, “Chicago is our reality, but Lake Geneva is our serenity.”

amp wandawega is a historic campground on the shores of lake wandawega in wisconsin, owned and operated by chicago-based husband-wife duo david hernandez and tereasa surratt. By day, Hernandez and Surratt work in the advertising world. He’s the Executive Creative Director of Ogilvy and Mather, and she is the VP Global Group Creative Director at Ogilvy, but in their spare time they don their flannel shirts and wellies, roll up their sleeves, and get their hands dirty, restoring and running every aspect of the camp. Thanks in part to its close proximity to Chicago — just under two hours — as well as a blend of positive local and national press and enthusiastic word-of-mouth from guests, Camp Wandawega has emerged as a unique destination for everyone from city dwellers to large brands, providing visitors with a place that’s as much a bucolic getaway as it is a direct link to a simpler time.

But let’s start at the beginning: The history of Camp Wandawega is long and varied. The Wandawega hotel was built in 1925 by a group of Chicagoans looking to create a speakeasy during the Prohibition Era, and the building was quickly outfitted with all the essentials for illicit activities— think trap-doors, hidden spaces and extra exits— making it an ideal destination for gambling and illegal liquor distribution. Despite these tricks, the Feds raided and temporarily shut down the operation in 1931. Shortly after, the property reemerged as Orphan Annie’s, a lively, debaucheryfilled tavern run by Anna Beckford Peck, who entertained various characters with gambling and booze (though liquor had been legalized by then). After Peck went to prison in 1942, the property began a more wholesome chapter: it was bought by a Chicago family, the Andrzejewskis, and converted into a lakefront resort. Despite its popularity with Chicago families looking for a getaway, the property was then purchased by the Catholic Church, which used it to house Latvian priests who were unable to return home during the Soviet occupation. Thus, in the 1970s, Wandawega became a Latvian church camp, which eventually went up for sale in 2003. This is where Hernandez enters the camp’s story. He and his family had always spent their summers visiting Camp Wandawega, and the place was close to his heart. So, when the property went up for sale, Hernandez and Surratt decided to buy it and breathe new life into the camp, which is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. With an eye for design and a passion for digging up vintage treasures, they’ve spent the last 15 years painstakingly restoring the camp, all while still working their demanding advertising jobs. It’s a passion project for the duo, who come up most weekends with their daughter, Charlie, who is now the fifth generation to spend summers at Camp Wandawega. “It’s a communal family project, in that when we are there, we’re doing the work ourselves. We don’t have investors, and we don’t even have big construction companies do the renovations. It’s very much mom and pop,” Surratt says. “David’s parents come up every weekend, and it has become a place for us to spend time together that we wouldn’t otherwise have if we just stayed in Chicago. Here, Charlie gets to go to weddings, attend art camp and band camp, and have s’mores every night. It’s a different sort of upbringing for her, and we feel very fortunate to be able to give that to her.” KEEFEREALESTATE.COM | 125


In restoring the camp, Surratt and Hernandez have spruced up the cabins, lodge and other structures, adding vintage items and outdoorsy decor that expertly pairs with Wandawega’s natural surroundings. The vintage-rustic design has attracted a wide range of visitors. In fact, since it was started, Wandawega has hosted everything from art, theater, culinary, and kids’ camps to company retreats, as well as weddings, photo shoots and collaborations with top brands, including Warby Parker, Faribault Woolen Mills, Threadless, the Land of Nod, and many more. While Wandawega is often booked for full-camp private events, in between, Hernandez and Surratt open up the Camp to visitors, continuing the camp’s long-standing tradition of providing a respite to families, including many from Chicago. Despite the pitch-perfect design, Hernandez and Surratt do their best to inform prospective visitors that Camp Wandawega wasn’t created to be a luxury experience. Their website includes a “Manifesto of Low Expectations,” explaining that the camp is the “definition of rustic.” There’s no air conditioning, a weak wi-fi signal, old-school camp showers, lumpy mattresses and shared kitchens and baths. But rather than offer high

thread-count sheets and luxury steam showers, Surratt and Hernandez aim to bring visitors back to a simpler time and help them connect with life’s simple pleasures. Of course, Surratt realizes the rustic experience isn’t for everyone; “Some people say they love the idea of camping, but they really don’t,” she explains. “When they get there, they’re like, oh shoot, this isn’t glamping, this is full on sleeping in a tent with no air conditioning.” But those who are along for the rustic ride are treated to an almost immersive trip back in time to an old-school summer camp. Scattered across the 25-acre grounds, you’ll find every sort of camp activity imaginable: an archery field, shuffleboard, horseshoes, a tennis court (wooden rackets provided), more than 20 acres of hiking trails, a fleet of vintage bicycles, canoes, several vintage aluminum boats, fishing equipment, a private lakefront, and a giant bonfire pit, complete with s’mores fixings. The lodge, the main building of the former Wandawega Hotel, provides indoor communal areas, such as a great room and dining room, and guests are welcome to cook their own food using any one of the camp’s grills, smokers or griddles.

Hillhouse The newest addition to the camp is the Hill House, a recently restored three-bedroom, twobath home adjacent to Camp Wandawega’s property. “It was sitting on four lots next door,” Surratt says. “We bought all the lots of the land that it sat on. We wanted to own it because it was bordering us, plus it was falling apart, and we wanted to fix it up.” Surratt and Hernandez rehabbed the property over the course of two years with help from Patrick McGuire, owner of McGuire Architectural Interiors. The project attracted the interest of notable vendors, including Kohler, Rejuvenation and La Marzocco, who provided a deluxe espresso machine, giving the 128 | SUMMER 2019 |

home a more upscale vibe than the camp’s other accommodations. “The Hill House is for folks who really want central air conditioning, good coffee, and a culinary kitchen, but still want to go down and visit camp.” According to Surratt, the Hill House is an extension of the camp, and they similarly use it for everything from individual rentals to corporate retreats, brand shoots, and photo shoots. Hill House can be rented a maximum of four times per month, which is an ideal situation for Hernandez and Surratt. “We would much rather have fewer guests than a constant turnover,” Surratt says. “We’ve invested too much in the house. I have family heirlooms in there, things that are really easy to break. In that way, it’s totally different from Camp Wandawega.”

When Hernandez and Surratt bought Camp Wandawega in 2004, they sparked something back in Chicago. Since then, Surratt says around a dozen of their friends, all from the city, have purchased second homes in the area, creating a community away from home. “It’s a blessing because you’re seeing all these old buildings, sometimes abandoned buildings, come to life,” Surratt says. “It’s great to see a resurgence of interest in an area and a real diversity of creative types.” She attributes this in part to the abundance of amenities in the area. Visitors to Walworth County have access to the lush natural landscape, a vibrant food and drink scene, artisan-made products, creative entrepreneurs and much more. “There are so many boutique grocers, growers, farms, and makers that are moving here from downtown New York or Chicago, since they have the ability to launch their brands and businesses from almost the middle of nowhere,” Surratt says. “It’s providing so many more options. It’s not just solitude, though it can be.” Given how close Wandawega is to their hearts, plus the community and amenities offered in their home-awayfrom-home, it is not surprising that the family has been discussing moving to the Lake Geneva area permanently. But Surratt says that at the moment, splitting time between Chicago and Walworth County is the ideal set up. “Right now, it affords us a certain degree of balance,” she says. “We can go up and recharge, then come and [enjoy Chicago]. DANCING FOR A NEW BEGINNING Music, dancing celebrities and a ton of sparkle helped transform a barn into a ballroom for charity in Elkhorn, raising $40,000 to help build a domestic violence shelter. The event raised money for New Beginnings APFV, a non-profit organization that has been helping victims of domestic and sexual violence in Walworth County for 41 years, including 40 years as The Association for Prevention of Family Violence, or APFV for short. New Beginnings has pledged to build a shelter to provide a safe place for abuse survivors throughout the county to escape the violence and start the healing process. For each family, it will be a new beginning.
