f you ask most residents, they will tell you homelessness isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a major issue in the area.

Indeed, you are unlikely to find someone sleeping in an alley, or perched on a street corner holding a sign looking for work; however, the lack of visibility doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t paint an accurate picture of the plight of the homeless who live among us. The Transitional Living Center, in Burlington, Wisconsin, supports hundreds of people each year. Having opened its doors in 1993, the facility, commonly known as TLC, is the only resource in western Racine County to solely address the needs of the homeless. As most homeless shelters do, TLC provides shelter and food to those in need. However, the center goes above and beyond any typical homeless shelter. The Transitional Living Center also provides extensive

There are hickory trees and oak trees. There are ospreys, owls, woodpeckers and hummingbirds. There are butterflies, bobcats and wolves. This is no manicured backyard. You may be wondering, who could pull off such a transformation? Well, Mariani had already worked for his family’s company, Mariani Landscape, for 37 years before he left two years ago to start his own, LandServe LLC “Landscapes For Life”. His mission now is to make native plants culturally acceptable in landscaping on private, commercial and public lands to help protect the environment and its wildlife. So naturally, he was up for this challenge. “Most people in this country do not accept natural landscaping for their residences. They see them as weed patches. very traditional manner and care for them in a traditional manner and have it work for people,” Mariani says. Before tackling this major project, John and his family had been living in Lake Forest, Illinois. John and his wife Marie had both grown up in the area; John on his family’s nursery, and Marie on a chicken farm. But after their children went off to college

they decided it was time for a change. One day as they were driving, they saw a sign advertising five acres of land for sale. They drove up an old farm road to the top of a hill, and saw a beautiful old barn on the highest point of the property. “I said, ‘This is it. We have to have this,’” explains Marie. “We had a great need to get back into nature.”

Once they returned home, the Mariani’s repeatedly tried to get in touch with the owner. One Sunday, as they were sitting outside on their patio, John said, “Give me the phone. I’m going to call him again,” and to their surprise, the owner picked up. After several in-person meetings, they eventually convinced him to sell the entire sixty acres. Since they purchased it, the Mariani’s have been dedicated to restoring their beloved property back to its pre-settlement environment. Today, their land is a mixture of savannah, woodlands, and prairie. It’s a far cry from the old hayfield that it once was, which had been grazed by cattle, tilled by farmers, and overgrown with invasive plants. The restoration was a conscientious process that began with John Thomas Curtis’s book, The Vegetation of Wisconsin: An Ordination of Plant Communities. Curtis, according to John, started the whole trend of restoring prairies, and he wanted to learn more about Wisconsin’s native plant communities. John purchased one hundred different seeds, mainly from a seed company called Agricol. Then, he mowed invasive plants, burned

debris, disked and cultivated the soil, and hired a farmer to plant special soybeans to nitrify and hold the soil in place before he began seeding. A year after they began their work, there were so many species of native plants on their land that John didn’t even recognize hundreds of them; some of these seeds had been dormant in the soil for 200 years! As for the building itself, the Mariani’s two bedroom, four bathroom house was also built with the natural environment in mind. John designed it himself, and constructed it to fit the vernacular of the area. It took nine months to build this cedar wood house, but it looks like it has belonged there for years. The building materials are all high quality, local materials, from the fireplaces and chimneys made of limestone, to steps and patios mined from stones from Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. The floors and cabinets are made of local white oak, and an outdoor deck made of red fired clay, which is over a hundred years old.

This was a labor of love for us, and we want to share that with other people.”

The inside of the house reflects Marie’s unique taste. She fashioned the main staircase to look like a horse’s fence and hung decorative Native American blankets from the railing to overlook the living room. Every piece of furniture was passed down from Marie’s grandparents or her mother, adding to the house’s personal charm. For anyone looking to restore their own property, John says the best place to start is the Public Land Survey System, an online surveying system used to subdivide and describe plots of land, where anyone can look up a property and find out about

its history. From there, they need to decide what their goal is for their property, investigate the property’s wildlife needs by contacting their state’s department of natural resources, and, if need be, research federal and state programs that can help with funding. John also recommends contacting an ecologist, before employing a landscape architect like himself, to gain a better understanding of the local, native ecology. “This was a labor of love for us, and we want to share that with other people,” Marie said.

Though the ingredients are simple, the recipe is very precise; a recipe only the best trained pizzaiolo can create. Oakfire was opened in spring of 2015 when David Scotney, who was vacationing with his family in Lake Geneva, convinced his wife to abandon their plans to build a lakefront home in Maine, and instead stay in town to build a lakefront restaurant. With the help of Keefe Real Estate agent Debbie Cobian, they found the perfect location. After a successful initial eight months, Scotney decided it was time to further develop the restaurant. “I saw the opportunity to take advantage of the view and build up,” he says. Oakfire 2.0, as Scotney refers to it, opened its doors to the public in spring of 2017. The new building has almost tripled the seating capacity as well as added exciting new alfresco dining. ond floor, the patio and interior seamlessly blend to make a dining area with an exceptional view of the lake. Scotney, who has a history in design, cultivated the new Oakfire image. “Industrial vintage vibe is the heart of the brand,” he says. He and Pete Juergens, of Geneva Bay Construction, worked closely with architects to design the new building. Juergens then operated as a liaison between Scotney and Keller Construction, the commercial builders for the job. Steel, concrete, and reclaimed wood all contribute their unique texture to the fresh atmosphere. Though the environment is crisp and new, it’s still the exquisite pizza that steals the show. “Neapolitan pizza is a hundreds of years old tradition.

It’s a very specific type of pizza that follows a very specific set of guidelines,” says Scotney. The pizza is typically characterized with a smoky, charred outer crust and a soft, delicate center, then topped with the freshest ingredients before being baked at one thousand degrees in a specific wood burning oven. As per its name, only Oak is burned in the ovens at Oakfire. To celebrate the fusion of traditional Italian with an American twist, many ingredients are locally grown and made, including our own Wisconsin cheese. In addition to using local fresh ingredients, executive chef Nick Crawford works to fulfill the Oakfire promise by doing everything he can to make their entire menu from scratch. can be found in Wisconsin fields. Some things require true Italian roots. Oakfire tomato sauce is made from San Marzano tomatoes, imported from the base of Mt. Vesuvius. They are hand crushed, and mixed with sea salt, oil, and basil. Also imported is fresh mozzarella di bufala, or buffalo mozzarella, which gives a creamier and sweeter taste to their special Napoli pizza. To accompany the savory menu, Oakfire offers a great list of Italian and American wines as well as craft beers and a meticulously created craft cocktail list. “Sean Forbeck, our bar and restaurant manager, has really brought our bar to life.” says Scotney. Sangria, Beached Mule, and the Melonballer are all favorites of Oakfire patrons. These delicious drinks are no longer limited to mealtimes; Oakfire is now open late on the weekends. Scotney saw a niche for a different type of bar in town. “You have your sports bar covered and your local bar. But there isn’t really a craft cocktail and beer bar in town.” Oakfire now

fills that gap. Weekend evenings the bar remains open until two in the morning and offers DJs or live music. As one would assume, weekends are very busy. The restaurant can easily serve fifteen hundred people on any given Saturday. Consequently, a very large staff is needed to operate a restaurant and bar of this size. Paul Meckler, Operations Manager, oversees the near one hundred employees. “He is basically my right hand man.” says Scotney. With an executive team including the lives of Crawford, Forbeck, and Meckler behind him, you can be sure Scotney has big plans for the future of Oakfire, including the possibility of a second location. Nestled in the center of Walworth County right off a major expressway, East Troy is only 45 minutes from Milwaukee and Madison, and two hours from Chicago. East Troy has a rich historical feel with well-maintained historic homes and buildings. The center of it all is the East Troy town square, which features local restaurants, bars, coffee shops, an antique bookstore, and a shave shop. The square is a favorite spot for the locals to host events. East Troy’s historic main square has been coming back to life in the past few years, thanks to several families who bought a few of its buildings and renovated them, decorating them with bright awnings and vibrant colors. In 2013, a café, bakery, and grocery store were opened. Milwaukee. Besides coffee, there are a variety of homemade baked goods. Inside the café is the Square Roots grocery store, where residents can buy locally-grown seasonal produce, dairy and meat, some of which comes from the farms of the families who own it, as well as specialty items like jars of local honey, tahini, Brazilian nut butters, hot chocolate mixes, sesame oils, and tomato purees. Recently, an independent bookstore called Ink Link Books opened next door to the café, featuring a collection of 5,000 books of all genres. round the corner from 2894 on Main is Sammy’s Place, a bar where many locals come to relax and enjoy themselves. The bar’s owner, Samuel Bresler, was born and raised in town. The building used to be a bank before the Great Depression hit. There aren’t many old-fashioned soda shops or 1950s driveins in most parts of the country anymore, but East Troy has two such places: J. Lauber’s Ice Cream Parlor and Gus’s Drive-In. J. Lauber’s is modeled after a 1920s-drug store in Milwaukee that the owner frequented during his childhood. Patrons truly feel like time-travelers when they step inside this ice cream parlor. Not only are the desserts delicious, but they can also be customized. As for Gus’ Drive-In, it is a 1950s-style rock and roll drive-in restaurant that sells burgers, Chicago hot dogs, and gyros, among other things. Gus’ is known for its classic car shows on Saturday nights, featuring cars, trucks, and motorcycles that travel there from all over the Midwest. harming businesses aren’t the only things to explore in East Troy. As a result of that, around this area there’s probably six to eight different small farm operations that have been started by students who came here and stayed in the area,” explains Perry Brown, Executive Director of the Michael Fields Institute. One of the main historical features of this community is the East Troy Railroad Museum, located in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum is run by local volunteers, and visitors can learn about the history of the East Troy Electric Railroad, as well as ride restored, historic trolleys. East Troy is full of pleasant little spots to enjoy the surroundings. With three lakes in the area, lake life is a major part of living and visiting East Troy. One of these spots is Booth Lake’s Memorial park and beach. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, this quaint beach is a favorite for children and adults. Lake Beulah is a popular spot for boating and enjoying the summer days

In addition to enjoying lake life and celebrating the history of the town, East Troy is a progressive community when it comes to its children’s education. Personalized learning is at the forefront of the East Troy Community School District. The school district was the first in the state to have SmartLabs, twenty-first-century classrooms where students study robotics, computer sciences, circuitry, and other areas within STEAM education. Brian Beierle, a teacher in the school district who has been teaching for twelve years and grew up in the community, sums up what he loves about the towns school system, and indeed, the whole community: “There’s always been a sense of community in East Troy that I haven’t felt in other places. The town may be tiny, but it is an epicenter for a much larger community. The people here really look out for one another.”

Syverson gets many of these items through

real estate transactions. Most of the current items in the store have come from South Shore Club, Country Club Estates, and Geneva National. The refreshing feel (and scent) of the store is enhanced by products such as the luxury candle line, Voluspa. “The consignment pieces keep the inventory unlike what you see in any current catalogue, but I love to shop new, too,” says Syverson. Offerings like Voluspa’s Crisp Champagne candle, a colorful rug, or some sparkly earrings provide an intriguing variety where customers are guaranteed to find a little something special. One of the shop’s quirks is that it is located in what was once a bank. Vacant for 14 years, the 1970s building has been freshly painted and decorated with flowers. Born and raised in Walworth herself, Syverson takes pride in her part in transforming a piece of town that needed it so badly.
