letter from the executive director Dear friends, During this Holiday Season I want to express a sincere note of thanks to the many, many “Habitat angels”, as our National CEO calls you. Your gift of time, dedication and commitment as staff members, volunteers, committee members and Board members to our affiliate makes every day worthwhile at Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity. Allow me to express a special thank you as well to the many build volunteers from Lake and Geauga county and to our ReStore donors, customers and corporate and private donors for your support and belief that affordable homeownership is important to the quality of life for our local families. During this pandemic, your support has been unwavering and we couldn’t do it without you! You are all truly making a difference and impacting the lives of local families who need a helping hand up here in Lake and Geauga county. We look forward partnering with you in the upcoming year and furthering our mission together. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Be well. Jim Thie, Executive Director Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity

more than brick and mortar A Time of Reflection The holiday season marks a time of reflection and gratitude for many of us. As you find comfort in your own blessings, I encourage you to reflect on the power behind a new beginning. The journey of Chris and Danielle has led them to that new beginning - full of hope, strength, and stability as a result of you giving today to build tomorrow. For 14 years, Chris and Danielle have lived through some of life’s hardest trials, including losing everything they owned in a flood, halting the rehabilitation of their Habitat home due to COVID-19, unexpected life events, and struggling to make ends meet due to increasing rental payments. But this holiday season will be different. Chris, Danielle, and their two daughters will move into a home of their own in Montville made possible by the support of Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity and you! More Than Brick and Mortar Today, more than 100 Lake and Geauga County families have had a new beginning because of the life-changing work we do. However, we know that we have more families who need us – all with stories like Chris and Danielle. Your donation helps these families, our neighbors, that lack decent, affordable housing to build the strength, stability and self-reliance they need. We can’t do it without you! You can come alongside other families, like Chris, Danielle and their two daughters, to take the next step in owning a safe and decent place to live. As you reflect on your blessings and the comfort of home during this season of thanks, please give generously. It’s more than a home. Your generous gift today will help us build hope for our families tomorrow. To make your donation – visit Lake-GeaugaHabitat.org/mtb

Thank You! We couldn’t do it without you.

Although 2020 has been a journey of emotional ups and downs for us all, we have many causes to celebrate as the year comes to close. On December 1, Giving Tuesday, our donors and community came together to support and uplift Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity. Leading up to Giving Tuesday, Stella, our North Pole Elf, showed our donors and social media followers the ins and outs of what we do which kicked off our efforts. Throughout December 1, supporters donated and shared our mission. As the clocked turned over to December 2, we raised over $2,500 towards our mission! Thank you for your generosity and partnership this holiday season!

Welcome

NDCL starts a campus chapter We are thrilled to announce the start of Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity’s Campus Chapter at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin! We cannot wait to continue to work alongside the students at NDCL to better our community! A Campus Chapter is a group of students who are passionate about helping families build better lives for themselves and are ready to take the next step to lead the charge at their school to help fulfill Habitat’s mission. Chapters are student-run, student-led organizations on high school and college campuses that partner with Habitat to perform four main functions: service, fundraising, education, and advocacy.

Life is What You Bake It In September we presented one of our homeowners with a Whirlpool stove. We held a raffle for one of our overstocks and this homeowner won! She resides in our 83rd home that we rehabbed. From Rose: I just got the stove installed yesterday and I already love it!! So many improvements in just 6 years. I’ve already made pumpkin seeds and a pumpkin pie in the oven and of course the turkey today. Again thank you so much for gifting me this fabulous stove. Happy thanksgiving. I know mine is. Gift Planning WHY a will is important: A will gives you control over how your assets will be distributed and who will oversee the distribution. Without a will, these decisions will be made by state law. Through a will, you are able to avoid unnecessary expense in the administration of your estate, reduce your estate taxes, provide for the people who are close to you, and support the charitable causes important to you. WHY consider a bequest to benefit Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity Bequests to Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity are one of the most important ways we have to build our financial resources. Gifts made through bequests provide support for your local Habitat for Humanity. These gifts will enable us to purchase the properties and they build homes we need to provide affordable housing to families in our own community. Or your gift can support Habitat’s other crucial programs and services if desired. A bequest is an ideal way to ensure that Habitat for Humanity can continue to help achieve a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

There are three different types of bequests you might consider to benefit Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity: 1. You can make a specific bequest of cash or property. The decision to leave Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity a certain amount of money, stock, bonds, or real estate would fall into this category. 2. You can make a residual bequest. Such a bequest would leave Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity the remainder of your estate (or a percentage of the remainder), after all specific gifts have been distributed. 3. You can create a contingent bequest. This type of bequest would provide for a gift to Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity should your designated beneficiaries not survive you.
