BY MICHAEL BOWER The Rancho Bernardo High boys tennis program has a history filled with talented players. But none could match the all-around success that Steven Chen has produced in high school. The senior has carried over a 4.00 GPA for the last four years — including a 4.6 GPA last semester — has been part of the Rancho Bernardo High Madrigal Choir for four years and shined as the No. 1 singles player for the Broncos this season. Chen has not emphasized one area of his life over another. Instead, he has poured his heart and every minute of his time to being the best he could be in the classroom, the choir and on the tennis court. And people notice. “To be honest,” longtime Rancho Bernardo boys tennis coach Mike Parrinello said, “in terms of school, community and other outside interests, he is probably the most wellrounded player I have ever had. Patterson, Akins lead way for RB BY MICHAEL BOWER Rancho Bernardo High sprinter Jackie Patterson will have two more years to try to top the performance she put together Saturday at the San Diego Section finals. Last act for seniors at state meet BY MICHAEL BOWER Doctors told Tyler Nelson in March that it was going to be six or seventh months before his torn right hamstring would be ready for a race. But the Del Norte High senior made it back to the track in seven weeks and now he is preparing for the state championships.
