Parents have a new way to stay up-to-date on sex offenders’ presence in their neighborhoods. The county has launched a new Sex Offender Email Notification System, which gives locals automated email alerts about sex offenders living in their area as listed on the Megan’s Law website. Joining the system is free and information on more than one area or ZIP code can be requested. Sign up at www.SanDiegoCountySexOffenders.com. “We get so busy in our daily routines that we may not be checking the Megan’s Law website as regularly as we should,” said Supervisor Bill Horn, who proposed the alert system to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors in May 2010. Later that year, officials estimated one-time cost to implement the system was $20,000. In addition, hosting costs would be $200 per month. Since 2004, Megan’s Law websites provide information on many registered sex offenders living in local communities across the country, but See ALERT Page A16

Transit center changes impact commuters BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Beginning at 8 p.m. tomorrow (Friday), those who use the Sabre Springs/ Penasquitos Transit Station must use one of three nearby parking lots when catching a bus or carpooling as a yearlong, $12.2 million construction project begins. Starting Monday, drivers who use the Rancho Bernardo Transit Station can again park in its northwest lot instead of the Roadway Inn parking lot.

Construction work at both stations is in preparation for the new, $246 million Interstate 15 Bus Rapid Transit project scheduled to launch next year, according to San Diego Association of Governments officials. The bus service operated by Metropolitan Transit System will connect the county’s major employment centers in downtown San Diego, UCSD and Escondido. With BRT, officials said buses will operate more frequently, so reliability and customer convenience will increase.

Unlike the existing Express service, which operates during morning and evening peak traffic, BRT will operate throughout the day in a similar fashion to a light rail service, but without tracks. Officials said it will be the first of its kind in the county. At the Rancho Bernardo station at West Bernardo and George Cooke Express drives, where $768,000 in renovations began last August, last week passengers started to use new bus bays, See TRANSIT, Page A16
