WELCOME ABOARD

Seasons Change I

t will take long before we experience the summer heat again. At least that’s what we thought. You can always find a way to extend your favorite season for vacation. This month, we’re going to Croatia, a country located along the Adriatic Sea in Central Europe. Join tourists as they roam inside the Nehaj Castle. Constructed on top of a hill in Senj City, it was built as a defense fortress against the Ottoman Empire. While Nehaj Castle is the most visited in the country, similar structures are also found in Trogir City—the Kamerlengo Castle built in the 15th century and the Duke’s Palace at the city square. Nature lovers can revel in the Hvar and Paklinski islands known for their pristine beaches. Diverse flora and fauna can be found at the Krka National Park. The walled city of Dubrovnik offers incredible sights such as the Rector’s Palace which houses the city’s historical artefacts. You can choose to walk along the limestone-paved Stradun Street. Or head to the seaport where ships come and go throughout the day. Seasons may change but that shouldn’t stop us from discovering new places around the world. It’s all about knowing where to look from finding beauty in everyday things to pursuing greater heights. When you choose the latter, make sure you book a ticket to Croatia.

At the heart of the bustling Makati business district, Ayala Museum becomes a place of quiet and wonder. Marvel at the Gold of Ancestors, a whole gallery filled with elaborate gold accessories from the 1600s. Traditional weaving patterns are displayed at the Art and Order of Nature in Indigenous Philippine Textiles. The Diorama Experience depicts 60 major events in Philippine history through miniature wood carvings. There is also a wide collection of modern paintings and sculptures, changing galleries and monthly activities. You’ll surely experience something new in each visit.

SIP & GOGH, EASTWOOD LIBIS WRITTEN BY FRAN PANG

Painting has always been a favorite hobby of mine. I don’t consider myself a professional in that aspect. I just like how therapeutic it is. When my friend and I booked a painting session at Sip & Gogh, I knew we were going to have a great time. The moment we entered the studio, the teachers allowed us to choose which masterpiece we wanted to do. My friend already had one in mind. I, on the other hand, took time browsing through the artworks. I picked out the classic Starry Night. Our teacher was helpful throughout the process. Snacks and drinks were served on the side. Being immersed in the session, we didn’t notice the time. It was truly a relaxing moment, letting us unleash our creativity in every stroke.

One Step at a Time EXPLORING A DESTINATION ON FOOT WILL NOT ONLY REWARD YOUR HEALTH AND HELP KEEP YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT SMALL DURING YOUR TRAVELS, BUT IT WILL ALSO GIVE YOU THE CHANCE TO GET TO KNOW A PLACE MORE INTIMATELY. DRESS FOR WALKING

It goes without saying that high-heeled shoes and short skirts are a no-no. Opt for shoes that give enough support, and clothes that you can freely and comfortably move around in. Just imagine, you’ll probably spend hours outdoors in this outfit, and you don’t want a wardrobe malfunction to impede your stroll. Being comfortable should always be a priority over looking good. Besides, who says the two can’t overlap?

HAVE A FULL BREAKFAST

From my experience, I find that walking around a city can not only take up energy, but the adrenaline can actually distract me from hunger pangs. Make sure that your body is fully fueled before stepping outside. You’ll need it to power through the day, especially if walking is not part of your daily routine back home.

PACK LIGHT

Bring only the essentials in a small backpack, or any other bag that keeps both of your hands free. Apart from the aforementioned, have some sort of identification with you (like a photocopy of your passport’s personal details page), and other items you think you might need. Leave heavy items back at the hotel. You don’t want to lug those around the whole day.

MAKANSUTRA HAWKERS WRITTEN BY YLLAINE SABENECIO • PHOTOGRAPHED BY FLOYD JHOCSON OF STUDIO 100

You don’t have to book a flight just to taste a variety of authentic Asian cuisines—all it takes is a trip to SM Megamall and you’re all set. If you have been to Singapore, you’ve probably heard about Makansutra in Gluttons Bay. Founded in 1997 by entrepreneurphotojournalist KF Seetoh, Makansutra is meant to celebrate and promote Asian cuisine in Singapore. Seetoh has been promoting the culture of eating street food and is recognized as Singapore’s Food Ambassador. Now that this famed Singaporean hawker food market has reached Manila, it’s meant to do the same. Together with local food authorities like JJ Yulo and Chef Him Uy de Baron at the helm, you’re sure to get your money’s worth with Makansutra’s hawker-style creations. Expect famous dishes like Braised Beef Noodles, Satay skewers, Chili Crab, and Hainanese Chicken Rice to satisfy your appetite. As Singaporean cuisine is a mix of influences from different cultures like Chinese, Malaysian, and Indian, Makansutra delivers the tastes of Asia all under one roof. Makansutra Hawkers is located at 2nd floor, SM Megamall, Building A, Mandaluyong City. Open from 10:00AM-10:00PM.

TRAVEL NOTES | TIPS

Guide to Solo Travel TRAVELING BY YOURSELF MAY SEEM SCARY AT FIRST, BUT A WELL-PLANNED SOLO ADVENTURE CAN TURN OUT TO BE THE BEST TRIP OF YOUR LIFE. CHECK OUT THESE TIPS FOR A MEMORABLE AND HASSLE-FREE VACATION WRITTEN BY KLARA ISKRA AÑONUEVO • PHOTOS COURTESY OF PIXABAY

RESEARCH AND PLAN

Any kind of travel requires research, and even more so if you’re traveling solo. Apart from reading on the attractions of a destination, also look up known tourist traps and scams so you can avoid falling prey to them. Once you have the basic information, map out a daily itinerary for your trip. While this can sound tedious, remember that the only person you have to take into account is you. Is there no one in your family or friends who share your love for parks? Use this trip to hit up all the parks you can, without being rushed by anyone. This also means your itinerary can be as fluid as you want it to be. Not feeling a particular museum’s vibe? You can leave as soon as you want to.

A PHONE WITH DATA CONNECTION IS YOUR FRIEND

It’s easier to get where you want to go if you have a smartphone with an internet connection. You can use navigation apps, translation apps, and even dining apps to make your trip run more smoothly. Don’t forget to also use this to check in with your friends and family back home from time to time. It doesn’t have to be a blow-by-blow account via a private message. It can be as generic as an Instagram post. Also remember to bring a juiced up powerbank with you, as navigation apps can quickly drain your phone’s battery.

CONNECT WITH THE LOCALS

Even if there is a language barrier, there’s no one better to show you a place than a local. Whether it’s a hotel staff or someone you meet on a train, if assistance is offered, and if the person seems genuine, go for it.

HUILE SOYEUSE BY PHYTO

In a world of multi-hyphenates and multidisciplinary practices, hair care doesn’t fall too far off as it keeps up with the times, formulating hybrid products that pack a punch. A versatile combination that has the lightness of a cream but with the potency of oil, Phyto’s Huile Soyeuse provides intense hydration, anti-frizz protection, static control, all while maintaining vitality and manageability. Delivering serious moisture, the treatment oil is the finishing touch that tames pesky flyaways, leaving hair healthy, smooth and conditioned.

VIOLET LEAD HAIR BALM BY AESOP

No matter how fussy or precise we are with our hair, we all get to a common point where it is a bane to maintain. Coarse, unruly and at an awkward length, the solution comes in the form of a hair balm, an alternative to sticky and greasy styling products. A wonder for air-dry mussing, the moisturizing Violet Leaf Hair Balm by Aesop softens and shapes, coaxing even the wildest of hair condition in place. Infused with camellia nut, lavender stem and violet leaf, the product leaves a sweet but subtle scent that deodorizes and refreshes.

ANTI-POLLUTION SHAMPOO BY ACCA KAPPA

Don’t let the harrowing effects of convenience-driven pollution get in the way, especially when it comes to your grooming routine. Fortify your simple wash and go with Acca Kappa’s Anti- Pollution Shampoo, a formulation crafted with delicate surfactants particularly suited for frizzy hair that is sensitive to humidity and polluting agents. Moisturizing and nourishing, diligent use also tames, leaving hair soft and silky with its mix of wheat, oat, cucumber, peach, juniper and horse chestnut.

CROATIA YOUR HONEYMOON ESCAPADE WRITTEN BY ERIKA GRACE R. LAPITAN

L

ast month, my dearest and closest friend finally tied the knot with her long-time partner and best friend. Bearing witness to the challenges and emotional ups and downs during their wedding preparations, I can truly say that their love for each other is stronger now than when they first met. After all the stress, they truly deserved a one-of-a-kind honeymoon where they can spend time together. The newlyweds have decided to spent their honeymoon in Croatia. Located along the shores of the Adriatic Sea, Croatia has long since established a society way back in the 7th century. King Tomislav, the country's first ruler, united the region and founded the Kingdom of Croatia. With this unique history and a beautiful location, this country serves as an ideal vacation spot for different wanderers, from couples on a sweet escape or a solo traveler in search for different inspirations. OLD-AGED LANDMARKS Surrounded by the breathtaking blues of the Adriatic Sea and verdant mountains of Velebit and Mala Kapela, the city of Senj is famous among tourists for three reasons: beaches, campsites and fortresses. Pebbled and sandy beaches decorate the different parts of the metropolis, and the most famous ones are the Skver Beach, Diga Beach, Lukovo Beach, and Prva Draga Beach. The camping sites located along the shores of the Adriatic Sea are also crowd-drawers. Suitable for budget travelers, these provide tents and camping equipment for visitors. Pocket-friendly restaurants and rentals are also found within the area for a more comfortable stay. The usual camp site picks are Camp Skver, Camp Bunica I and V, Camp Ujca, and Camp Racva.

(Top) Best seen at night when the many lamp posts illuminate the area, Stradun street is the most well-known street in Dubrovnik City

The third reason, but certainly not the least, is the noble Nehaj Castle. Built by the Uskoks in 1558, the fortress stands dominantly with its of five lookout towers and 11 massive cannons. It now serves as a museum with a wide display of weaponries, coat-of-arms, and many artifacts once used during its prime.

(Bottom) Walk along Croatia’s old seaport and interact with the locals as they go with their daily tasks

The small town of Trogir is a popular attraction for individuals who want to revel in the beauty of the medieval era. Considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved landmarks and sceneries, it boasts of many ancient infrastructures. Among these are the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, constructed during the 13th century and is now the most favorite attraction of the city; the 15th century town hall situated in the town square; and the Kamerlengo Castle built by Marin Radoj in the 15th century and now displays many historical exhibits. Travelers also love to flock the Kaštela Village for a peaceful walk in its streets and alleyways or a sumptuous dinner of local cuisines in its many restaurants, cafés, and taverns. It’s also ideal to visit Dubrovnik, another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Croatia. The walled city is home to sights like the 16th century Sponza Palace which now houses the National Archives. A stroll around the area will take you to Trsteno's Arboretum, the world’s oldest arboretum which now contains the magnificent Neptune's Fountain; the Island of Lokrum with its botanical garden and monastery; and the Gothic-styled Rector's Palace which now houses the Museum of Dubrovnik. Don’t forget to drop by the Fort Lovrijenac for a panoramic view of the whole metropolis and surrounding Adriatic Sea. Further, visit the Palaca Stradun, Dubrovnik's main street and shopping hub. Best seen at night, the street is the most preserved area of the old town and still shows many buildings from pas eras. Enter the Church of St. Blaise, constructed during the 18th century in honor of the city's patron saint. End the day with a romantic walk along the streets of Dubrovnik's seaports. Complete with restaurants, bars, cafés, and local shops, Dubrovnik's waterfront is probably the most populated area in the city due to the many cruising and trading ships that dock in the area.

ISLAND HOPPING Get sun-kissed as you go island hopping in Hvar and the Paklinski Islands. Hvar Island is famous for its bountiful lavender fields which fill the island with inspiring scents and paint its hillsides with a nice shade of blue. The best time to tour the place is from May to mid July when the flowers are in bloom. Meanwhile, the Islands of Paklinski, affectionately called as "Hell's Islands", is a must visit for the different sights seen on each of the islets. Accessible to small boats and yatchs, the most visited islands are the Sveti Klement, the main and biggest island; the popular dining hub that is Galesnik Island; Vlakar Island, a fishing village known for its scuba diving spots; Marinkovac Island with its pebbled beaches and coves; Pokonji Dol Island famous for its lighthouse built since 1873; and the Jerolim Island whose name was taken from the now ruined church. Palmižana Village in Sveti Klement Island also draws in tourists because of its interminable restaurants, resorts, souvenir shops, and of course nightlife. LOVE FOR NATURE Nature lovers will surely have a good time trekking in the Krka National Park and viewing its many changing sceneries. Probably the most well-loved park in the country, Krka National Park offers its visitors many recreational activities from boat rides, to hiking and bicycle trails, to many archeological sites. Souvenir shops and multimedia galleries are also found within the area for visitors to enjoy. Popular sites in the region include the Skradinski Buk, the longest of the many waterfalls in the park. Accessible either by boat rides or walking trails, the falls is a beauty in its own with its mills-turned-souvenir-shops and cultural exhibition areas. Next is the Roški slap, the biggest waterfall in the park with many backwaters and small islands. Aside from viewing the falls through footpaths made since the Roman Empire, visitors can also go spelunking in the Oziđana Pećina Cave adjacent to the falls. Also a sight to behold are the Manojlovac Waterfall and the Bilušića Buk. The current in these waterfalls are so strong that visitors can hear the rumble from afar.

Spend a few hours with nature as you roam the sites of Krka National Park along with the famous Krka River

Aside from the interminable falls found in the park, there are many landmarks that are also worth a visit. Among them is the Visovac Island affectionately called by the locals as the Our Lady's Island. Here you can find the Church of Our Lady of Visovac and the Monastery of Our Lady of Mercy. It is accessible only by boat coming from the Skradinski Buk. Another is the Burnum Roman Military Camp whose ruined amphitheatre is a beauty among architectural and historical buffs; as well as the Krka Monastery with its Roman catacombs open for public viewing. Lastly,

never forget to see the exceptional beauty of the Krka River itself which is the main reason why the park was made. YOUR HONEYMOON ESCAPADE Life is too short to restrict ourselves of the happiness we rightly deserve. Grab every opportunity to smile and be grateful of the life given to us. And like my newlywed friends who found their love for each other, spend your honeymoon in Croatia and celebrate your wedding in this beauty.

Heaven in the City NEWLY-RENOVATED DUSIT THANI MANILA BRINGS ADDITIONAL TREATS FOR THOSE WHO WANT A PERSONALIZED STAYCATION WRITTEN BY MARBEE SHING-GO PHOTOS COURTESY OF DUSIT THANI MANILA

THE WELCOME Being a business hotel, Dusit Thani Manila provided me the usual quick and no-frills check-in when I arrived. The entire process only took 15 minutes, in which I was escorted to the hotel lounge, offered a cold towel, and given my keycard. The big welcome, however, happened when I went to my room. I was surprised because I was greeted with a box bouquet of flowers, and not the usual bouquet some hotels routinely give out as a token to the guests. I have stayed in Dusit Thani many times before, and knowing that I love flowers, the hotel really made a special and thought-out effort with that box bouquet. They also printed out a number of what seemed to be exclusive Dusit Thani business cards, with my name being printed on it along with the hotel as my residence address—another personalized gesture that I really appreciated. The welcoming team made an effort to personalize, and the hotel became more of a home to me in that sense. THE ROOM Since I have stayed in Dusit Thani a lot of times in the past, one thing I noticed back then was that the rooms had always looked too big. It sort of appeared unbalanced in terms of design, with huge furniture on one area, and somewhat

empty spaces on the other. The overall feel of the room also used to be very dark—playing with the colors of gold, brown, and orange. Upon renovation, however, the room got a lot brighter and the window became wider that it extends from the living room all the way to the bedroom. The renovated room looked more spacious yet balanced and organized. The bathroom is also huge, with the space being properly maximized. THE FOOD Dusit Thani’s Benjarong Royal Thai Restaurant for me has always been the best Thai restaurant in the Philippines. So when I returned, it felt good because it seemed like coming home. However, the offerings of the place—the food and interiors— are so authentic you’ll also feel as if you’re already in Thailand. In addition, the hotel’s renovated all-day dining restaurant, now called The Pantry, is one of the more exciting breakfast buffets in Manila. There are so many stations that offer meals that are not only pretty to the eyes, but satisfying to the stomach as well. You can see stations offering Filipino breakfast, American and continental breakfast, European breakfast, Indian breakfast, and fruits.

They have everything for every kind of appetite. The restaurant’s highlight, however, was the lechon station, where you can see the pig being roasted in front of you. How many restaurants in Manila can you see lechon being cooked right before your eyes? It’s really such a nice treat for me. THE SERVICE Dusit Thani Manila’s service is Thai style—from when you open the door up to when you’re escorted to your room, the service is very quiet and serene. It’s very simple; the staff would bow humbly as their gesture of greeting, and give you what you want in a quiet way. THE SPA Dusit Thani’s spa center Devarana means “garden on heaven” in Thai-Sanskrit, which is why the spa resembles that of a natural garden. While most spas are usually conducted in dark areas, Devarana Spa has bright and well-lit interiors. It has big windows, and on the side, there’s a little pond and other water fixtures. This is because water plays a big role in Thai culture and history. For instance, Mekong River has become an important part of Thailand because it helped the country progress through the various trades that went on there. Many of their celebrations also involve water, such as the Songkran Water Festival, wherein the Thai would splash water on each other for purification and removal of one’s sins and bad luck. Devarana Spa’s most recommended massage, though, is its signature massage package, which combines five different massage techniques in one treatment—providing an extraordinary soothing experience that’s one for the books. AT CHECKOUT Just like my check-in, checkout was hassle-free as well since all I had to do was go to the Continental floor and return my key. Everything was already pre-arranged to make sure I left stress-free. It was all a breeze. THE VERDICT I would definitely come back and make sure that I have nothing scheduled for the entire stay so I can enjoy the hotel in its full glory. My experience at Dusit Thani Manila was so relaxing that even just staying in the room is already enough to get me satisfied. The room was really comfortable, not too big and not too small, just the right size, and it comes with a nice city view. I also love that it comes with amazing restaurant outlets which offer choices that are as good, if not better, as when you go out to eat. It’s definitely the epitome of a sanctuary in the heart of Makati.

he crystal blue ocean view at the Henann Prime Resort is only one reason to return to the luxury hotel group’s latest property in Boracay. Sunbathing beds are placed on the white sand beach that faces a horizon fit for the pages of an Ernest Hemingway novel. A mango shake is best enjoyed under a large umbrella, where a personal masseuse helps put you in complete relaxation. This is a typical afternoon at the newest luxury retreat, where rest and carefree living is considered the top priority. An attentive staff is ready to collect your baggage at the docks before a private boat ride to the island. When getting off the sea vessel, a short drive from Henann’s private port to the hotel lobby in Station 1 gives guests the opportunity to observe the vibrant Boracay life that surrounds them. After a seamless check-in and a cool welcome drink, suites are readily available for freshening up before a long day by the beach.

Signature restaurant Seasalt brings the flavors of the sea to the table

SEASALT ON THE TABLE Those seeking for refreshments and good eats can make their way to Seasalt, the hotel’s signature restaurant facing the prime beachfront. The sprawling space is filled with multiple tables, fi ttingly placed far apart for maximum privacy. Modern fixtures, like artistically designed ceiling fans, give the restaurant an edgy look. Its convenient location by the main recreation area makes it a favorite spot within the property. Food options at the eatery vary from savory main dishes to snacks that are ideal for a seaside holiday. Appropriately named Seasalt, it is no surprise to discover that the seafood dishes at the

outlet are easy favorites. A tender salmon dish is the best seller and is a healthy choice before hitting the water. The Uni Pasta is a richer alternative for those willing to indulge before getting into their bikinis. The Panay Pizza is a twist on the popular Italian dish, adding shrimp and anchovies suitable for seaside dining. A MASSAGE BEFORE HAPPY HOUR Napping by the shore is a favorite past time for hotel guests. Large umbrellas shade the hotel’s sun beds for a comfortable afternoon in and out of snoozes. Upon request, a personal masseuse is ready to help you drift into pure relaxation.

Expert therapists performing firm massages put the body in complete shutdown mode, making long hours drift by seamlessly. It helps achieve a Zen state of mind, difficult to accomplish in the bustle of Manila’s city streets. Fresh fruit shakes help vacationers stay hydrated in the heat of summer. Beverages at Henann Prime Resort are served in traditional cocktail glasses that look appealing and classic. A mango shake (or one of the many numerous shake options) is suggested to help set the tropical mood. When the sun becomes golden in the afternoon, cocktail

zingers are a must. The classic martini is refreshing with a generous amount of gin and olive juice, while off-the-menu options, like an Amaretto Sour, is ready upon request. A live band playing memorable tunes during Happy Hour invites hotel guests to participate in impromptu sing-alongs. Those who can muster enough courage can go on the stage and perform their own rendition of their favorite Frank Sinatra tune. With enough liquid confidence, cocktail hour becomes an entertaining show, where being offkey is never an issue.

A POOL OUTSIDE YOUR WINDOW Evenings in are recommended when staying at the resort. Quiet neighbors in the adjacent suites respect privacy and demand it in return. Every room is equipped with a large tub, ideal for a warm bubble bath before bed. Crawling into the soft linens of a king sized bed is made better when wearing nothing but a soft, cotton bathrobe. The experience is enhanced further, after discovering the television set is equipped with Netflix and a USB cable that can play hard drives loaded with film favorites. A sinful treat before bed is possible when ordering room service from the kitchen. Cold nights in the hotel suites are just as delightful as hot afternoons by the shore. When daylight breaks, the familiar sounds of Boracay can be heard outside the bedroom window. Waves hitting the shore, flocking birds and the laughter of those enjoying the facility are a comfort to the ears. In several suites, a long swimming pool is located right outside the bedroom window. Fresh from slumber, one can jump into these exclusive springs for a refreshing, early morning swim. It is another day of sun, wind, sand and Seasalt.

W

hen one thinks of Dubai, two things come to mind: the desert and ultramodern architecture. It’s certainly amazing how, despite being in the middle of a desert, it has flourished into a progressive and developed modern city, having the most advanced architectural and engineering wonders of today’s time—from futuristic buildings down to modern cars and a carefully planned public transportation system. Dubai may initially not give off that inviting vibe among every traveler

worldwide, but its magnificence comes crystal clear once you’re already there, discernable in everything this emirate has to offer. One thing that you’ll notice when you get to Dubai is that it’s full of Filipinos. From the airport, to the hotel, to the restaurants and cafés, to basically everywhere you’ll go, there’s at least one Filipino who will greet you—making the city almost close to home as well.

(Top) The exhilarating 4x4 ride (Bottom Left) At the Burj Al Arab (Bottom Right) Camel riding is one of the famous activities in Dubai’s desert safari

OF SANDS AND ADVENTURE One of the best activities that you can experience in Dubai is the 4x4 drive, where you will get a good sampling of the way 4x4s are driven in the sandy dunes. Seatbelts are required however, and holding on to something is strongly recommended if you want to survive the ride. The dunes at sunrise are definitely a must-see, because it’s where you can actually feel the vastness of the desert. The best time to start would be just before sunrise as the sun is not yet hot and the sand is still a little cool. During this time, walking around the desert barefoot is such an exciting experience. Just keep your footwear beyond reach, though, because once it gets close to midday, the sand can instantly feel burning hot.

Another recommended activity in Dubai is the desert safari, where you can ride a camel and roam around the massive sand dunes. Getting on these gentle creatures is easy, but when they stand up or sit down, that’s when it gets kind of tricky. You have to hold on tight and shift your body backward or forward to counter the uneven stand of the camels. However, it’s going to be all fun and leisurely once they start walking. You should take note as well that some camels rest during midday as the sun becomes hotter. Even if you go there on a winter season, it can still get really warm during the day.

CREEK IN THE DESERT The Dubai Creek is a saltwater creek that has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists. This body of water is known to be the very reason for the existence of the city. The traditional abra or boat is a favorite way of getting from one side of the creek to the other. Up to 20 people can fit in each abra, but tourists may also opt to rent out the whole boat if they want a private cruise around the creek. There are also several ports along the Dubai Creek. Thousands of people access these ports every day to cross from the Bur Dubai to the Deira side. Tons of souks or markets are located as well around the area, including the textile souk, the gold souk, and the spice souk. Birds are also a common sight along the creek, since there is a bird sanctuary near the area. Aside from abras, the creek is also crossed by other water transportation such as water taxis, tour cruises, yachts, speedboats, and trade boats. The traditional trade boats lined up along the side adds to the whole charm of cruising along the cree k and seeing Old Dubai.

UNDERSTANDING OLD DUBAI Al Bastakiya in Old Dubai is a historical neighborhood dating back to the 1890s. The remaining structures were beautifully restored and preserved, and now serve as a center for arts and culture. The Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood, on the other hand, is another great way to get a glimpse of Old Dubai. Here, you can see wind towers which served as the air-conditioning system of the city centuries before. The complex is also a labyrinth of small alleys, some even as narrow as when you open

your one arm wide. Exploring the neighborhood of Old Dubai will also make you stumble upon quiet courtyards, restaurants, galleries, and shops that feature local artisan works. BUSTLING MODERNITY One of the recommended hotels for travelers who want to experience the best of Dubai’s luxury is the Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel in Burjuman Center. What’s perfect about this hotel is that it offers arguably the most beautiful skyline view of the city—and you can see it from its roof deck swimming pool area.

Dubai is replete with so many ultramodern structures, the most famous of which is arguably the Burj Khalifa—a skyscraper said to tower above the whole city, and the whole world. Preceded by Taipei 101, this mega-structure stands mighty at 828 meters with 163 floors. You can feel on top of the world by going up the observation deck during the day. And when the night falls, you can enjoy several beautiful light shows throughout the skyscraper. Even if you’re at the Dubai Mall, you can still watch and enjoy these water and light shows. One of the first architectural wonders of modern Dubai is the Burj Al Arab. The sail-shaped hotel— which is complete with luxury design and extravagant offerings—stands on a man-made island, and is best viewed along the Jumeirah Beach. Lastly and surprisingly, Dubai is also known for having a lot of lavish yachts. For a desert city, this fact amazes a lot of travelers, especially those who visit the Dubai Marina. This district is one of the best places to see many of these yachts, especially during the night, while enjoying an al fresco dinner with friends or loved ones.

Into the Heart of Vibrancy LOCATED AT THE CENTER OF HONG KONG’S BUSIEST DISTRICT, MARCO POLO HONG KONG HOTEL PROMISES A SANCTUARY THAT OFFERS A QUIET TIME AWAY FROM THE CITY’S HUSTLE AND BUSTLE, BUT ALSO ACCESS TO ALMOST EVERYTHING IN THE CITY WRITTEN BY JAMILLE DOMINGO PHOTOS COURTESY OF MARCO POLO HONG KONG HOTEL

THE WELCOME Accessibility was the first word that came into my mind when we arrived at Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel. From Kowloon Station, a free shuttle service was readily available for us. Although it stops only at Marco Polo Gateway, it was still just as convenient since we only had to take a very short walk to the hotel. It was full of people when we reached the lobby, but check-in was hassle-free, and the accommodating concierge made it easy for us to feel at home quickly. THE SCENE Overlooking the famous Victoria Harbour, Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel is located along Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, arguably the city’s busiest commercial and business area. It is also part of Harbour City—Hong Kong’s largest shopping complex. In addition, the hotel is also a stone’s throw away from the Star Ferry and Hong Kong’s cruise terminal. Aside from its free shuttle service from Kowloon station, the hotel is accessible as well via bus, MTR, and its limousine service. For tourists, it is also near major tourist attractions like the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Space Museum, and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. THE ROOM I was booked in a Deluxe Room overlooking the picturesque Victoria Harbour and the beautiful Hong Kong skyline. I couldn’t get enough of the view that it took me minutes before I took my eyes off it and focused on the other in-room amenities. The room—one of the hotel’s 665 rooms and suites— has a complimentary handy smartphone with Wi-Fi connectivity and Dual line, an extensive selection of TV channels, an in-room safe, a mini bar and a refrigerator, and a coffee machine and tea-making facilities. It was complete with everything I would need for the entire trip, and more.

THE LOUNGE Perhaps the only place in the hotel that I stayed a lot at aside from my room was the Continental Club Lounge. This is perfect for guests preferring exclusive comfort and personalized service. The lounge has a dining service complete from breakfast down to dinner—including snacks, wines, coffee, and tea. I loved it because aside from its cozy atmosphere that gave me the quiet time I needed, it has a friendly staff that provided non-stop service until its closing time at 11 PM. AT CHECKOUT The hotel let us have a late check-out at 2 PM, and even kept our baggage when we left for our last shopping and touring spree before our evening flight back to Manila. Like with check-in, we didn’t have any problem when we checked out—instead we left feeling relaxed.

THE SERVICE I fell in love with the service of Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel, as its staff was nothing but accommodating and friendly. Whether my concerns were about printing of documents for work, touring the city, or more tea, they all provided me results that are exemplary, and there was no time that I felt short of pampered. THE VERDICT Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel is perfect for everyone—families, tourists, and business travelers. The convenience and accessibility it provides make it easy to get through the bustling city, and its world-class warm Asian hospitality is truly something that you have to experience when you’re in Hong Kong.

LAOS This country is considered the least visited in ASEAN, and it’s probably why it developed quite an interest among many seasoned travelers. Jaison Yang, General Manager of Travel Warehouse, said that more people are now booking tours in or expressing curiosity about this humbling country because of its numerous beautiful temples sans the selfie-absorbed crowd, which are often observed in some of its more famous neighboring countries. “It’s a spiritual destination, and when I say spiritual, I mean it. Because not a lot flock Laos, its temples really exude that peaceful and Zen environment,” he said. It also gives an opportunity to interact with the monks, who go on an alms procession every sunrise.

TAIWAN Taiwan has been on the side, if not, behind the shadow of other more famous Chinese regions like Hong Kong and Macau for so long. But as Chal Chang Lontoc-Del Rosario, General Manager of Jeron Travel and Tours, observes, the island now has its hands full with the great increase in tourist arrivals, thanks to social media. From rich cuisine found in the night markets, to cultural destinations like Jiufen, down to natural sites like Shiffen Waterfalls, Taiwan is now the ideal place for quick family and barkada getaways. “The airfare is much cheaper, flights are easier, and the cold climate is really enjoyable. It’s really worth traveling to,” said Chal.

BHUTAN If undiscovered is what you really seek, Bhutan is definitely the place to be. Where else can you find a Buddhist kingdom on the edge of the Himalayas? Or temples and monasteries perched atop cliffs and mountains? The serenity that it brings, coupled with dramatic landscapes that range from subtropical plants to steep mountains and valleys, as well as the almost non-existent internet reception, make it the perfect place to really feel the beauty of the world—and the peace that once came with it. “It’s mysterious and has totally no exposure yet,” adds Angely Dub, owner of Access Travel and Tours.

NEPAL Just like its neighboring country Bhutan, Nepal is also blessed with a uniquely diverse landscape featuring the gorgeous Himalayan Mountains, hills, flat expansive plains, and deep gorges. The country’s people are also one of its main attractions, with charisma and hospitality comparable to Filipinos. Angely said that Nepal is gaining popularity among Filipino tourists mainly because of the opportunity to be near Mount Everest—the world’s tallest mountain, and believed to be the birthplace of Buddha. “People are now focusing on Nepal because they seek the serene Kathmandu temples, as well as the thrill of trekking the base camp of Mount Everest,” she said. ARMENIA This country has sparked the curiosity of seasoned tourists who are devout Christians or Catholics, according to Jaison, because it is the oldest Christian country in the world. It is where the religion was basically born. “Armenia has become an emerging destination because of its pilgrimage tour—which can also be historical for the devout. It boasts of having one of the first Christian churches in the world as well as Mount Ararat, where Noah’s Ark is located,” he said.

Being a big fan of Miyazaki films since my mama introduced me to them, the Ghibli Museum has been on my list of places to visit in Tokyo. Hearing about this museum gave me goose bumps. The famous My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service, have been on replay since my childhood. My friends would tell me how wonderful it is there with its own Ghibli Café, and life-sized characters, designs and souvenirs. I’ll definitely have to schedule my visit soon when I go back home to Japan.

Seeing Tate Modern from afar and the space it occupies on the banks of the Thames three years ago oddly appealed to me. Not that I’m the artsiest person nor do I fully understand how to appreciate its intricacies but knowing that it held floors and floors of modern and contemporary collections and exhibits made the vast structure seem like the ideal concrete haven for a meanderer like myself. It’s the perfect slice of what I found in my favorite city, and I can’t wait for the day I get to visit London again and check what Tate has in store.
