Although the athletes are members of opposing teams, they are friendly rivals. Their participation in the games reflects the essence of interscholastic athletics – to play hard but fair.
We encourage you, as fans and spectators, to demonstrate good sportsmanship and cooperation to ensure continued success this year and in years ahead.
Please support the advertisers in this program. Without their help, these programs would not be possible. Thank you for your support of all Loyola Academy sports programs.

Ramblers on ice
Dear Loyola Academy Hockey Community,
Welcome to the 59th year of Loyola Academy Hockey and the 54th Annual O’Grady Thanksgiving Tournament!
The Loyola Academy Hockey Club (LAHC) has a long tradition of excellence, both on and off the ice, thanks to the tireless efforts of the coaches, parents, volunteers, board members, Loyola Academy staff members and alumni that have served our club for nearly six decades and continue to do so today. Most importantly, we are grateful to our student-athletes, who represent our school and club with great dedication and competitive spirit.
I’d like to give particular recognition to our Hockey Director DJ Lavarre who, in his 35th year at LAHC, has been at the forefront of establishing and mainaining the culture of excellence that we so cherish.
We are thrilled to host the 54th Annual O’Grady Thanksgiving Tournament, to our knowledge, the biggest and longest-running high school hockey tournament in the State of Illinois. The competition once again promises to be outstanding across three divisions of play and 38 teams. Special thanks to Nic Pape, for his energy and diligence serving in his first year as our O’Grady Tournament Director.
This Yearbook and Program serves as the club’s primary fundraising vehicle and we are ever-grateful to the sponsors that support our players and their
families by helping to offset the costs of playing hockey. High school hockey is a club sport that is not governed by IHSA and, accordingly, entirely privately funded. As you review this book, please take a moment to get to know our gracious sponsors, and please consider patronizing their businesses as we’d like to return their generosity in kind.
I’d also like to thank Peter Schoonyoung and Dick Thomas, along with our long-time design partner Peter Birren, for their tremendous effort in publishing this book.
Lastly, it’s important to underscore the mission of Loyola Academy, which also serves as the foundation of LAHC: “To form women and men for meaningful lives of leadership and service in imitation of Jesus Christ through a college preparatory education in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition.”
It’s a great privilege to serve as the President of Loyola Academy Hockey Club and to be able to thank you for your support. Enjoy the tournament, have a safe and happy holiday season, and thank you for spending part of your Thanksgiving holiday with us.
Go Ramblers!
Sincerely,
Tom Macina President, Loyola Academy Hockey Club

Kyle Adam Shellberg was a two-time state champion with Loyola Gold, a model teammate and standout student-athlete. He unexpectedly died in 2010 in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
Kyle was a staff nurse at St. Joseph's Presbyterian Hospital of Denver. He was an amazing and unique soul with personal qualities for which most people could only wish. He was a friend to everyone and would offer all to any person in need.
To keep his memory alive, the Loyola Hockey Club created a scholarship fund in his name. The award comes with $1,500 that will be applied to the recipient’s college freshman year tuition.
Thanks to everyone who helped to make this scholarship possible. We are thrilled to have created such a fitting legacy for Kyle, and we are looking forward to many more award recipients in the coming years!
We hope you will continue to support Loyola Academy, and the Kyle Shellberg Scholarship Award, as we’ve seen first-hand the impact your gifts make.

Gold Jesuit Cup Champion
O’Grady Cup finalist & State tournament semi-finalist
Gold started last year strong by winning the Jesuit Cup in Denver and making it to the finals of the O’Grady Cup where they lost a very close game. Gold had a solid winning percentage during the regular season, especially the back half, and had a strong run in both the SHL and State Championship tournaments.
gold preseason
During the first weekend of September, Loyola Gold traveled to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to compete in a highly competitive tournament against other top teams from across the Midwest. The weekend provided an excellent opportunity for the team to bond and assess their standing in terms of talent, discipline, chemistry, and teamwork. It proved to be a very successful tournament for Gold. Despite a rapidly shrinking roster due to injuries and illness, the short-benched LAG battled their way to the championship game and narrowly lost in a hard-fought final. Players left the rink exhausted but proud, knowing they had laid a strong foundation to build upon for the season ahead.
Maroon O'Grady CupFinalist & AHL Academic Cup
The Loyola Maroon roster delivered a stellar 2024–25 campaign, capped by finals appearances at the O'Grady Tournament and the AHL conference tournament.
Crowned AHL regular-season champions, this team brought grit, unity, and pride to every game.

The Loyola Academy Hockey Club has had a long history of service over the years. Two seasons ago, a more formal service program was introduced and led by player Cooper Nelson to mirror the school's mission of women and men for others. Puck Pals is now in its 3rd season and under the direction of two seniors, Nick Thomas and Quinn Reynolds. They work with a committee of fellow players to plan events for all four of our teams throughout the season.
The goals for the year are:
2023-2024 Gold TeamPuck Pals starter group
1. To continue to establish Puck Pals as a tradition within Loyola Hockey
2. Raise awareness about the program and its importance to the hockey community, and
3. Continue to establish Loyola Hockey players as: women and men for others
ervice events have included helping at the Misericordia Family Fest and Bakery, and hosting various groups to learn how to play floor hockey or other sports with organizations like
Misericordia, Our Place, Maryville Academy and the New Trier Transition Program.
