Baby Signing A Mother’s Story As a mum of three, the one piece of advice I could give to any new parent would be to consider signing with your baby. I started attending Sing and Sign classes when my eldest daughter, Niamh, was just 6 months old. After hearing about it from a friend we decided to try it. I was a little sceptical, “My husband says baby signing is but the classes turned out one of the most rewarding things he’s to be great fun. Classes are ever done” small, friendly and a great social ground for parents and babies. Niamh enjoyed the music, and the songs made it easy to learn the signs.

“Our baby delights Maegan is now almost 4 years in being able to make old, and has stopped signing herself understood and it’s a real thrill being able in favour of talking non-stop!! to understand her” Like Niamh, she is chatty and confident with incredible vocabulary, and the Sing and Sign DVD’s are still amongst her favourites.

Baby signing is entirely natural and instinctive, it’s not another language, it’s just a normal part of what parents and babies tend to do anyway….use lots of gestures!! “Instead of tantrums

and guessing games she is Through the Sing and Sign capable of letting me know exactly what she wants” programme, Niamh learnt signs for a huge variety of words and phrases. Before she could speak, she was able to ask for things that she wanted, tell me how she was feeling, and even engage in conversation!! Her favourite signs were for animals. At 10 months old, over breakfast one summer morning, she told me she could hear the birds singing!! She also loved to sign every animal she saw from the window of the car.

Signing gave me an insight into the real little person she was fast becoming, her thoughts, preferences and ideas long before I would have been able to share them if I’d waited until she T: 028 9267 0055 could talk clearly. She rarely became frustrated because she was able to make E: info@ herself understood. Now “She’s had a laganviewenterprise.com real head start aged 6, Niamh is chatty and confident with a very mature www.laganviewenterprise.com vocabulary. I believe this is due to this head start in communication as a baby. 69 Drumbeg Drive, Old Warren, Lisburn BT28 1NY

By the time my second daughter, Maegan, was born we started to sign without even thinking about it. She liked to talk about her feelings most of all. It was wonderful that the children Funded by Lisburn City Council were able to understand each other through as part of the Local Community gestures. It made my heart melt to see Maegan Fund Programme.

ask Niamh or William for a hug, or sign sorry.

Having discovered the benefits of baby signing for myself, I was inspired to become a teacher of Sing and Sign to share this rewarding experience with other families. I have been teaching in Antrim, Ballymena and Carrickfergus since January 2010 and will be expanding into Lisburn, Lurgan and Dungannon in January 2011.
