THE ANSWER TO THE EDUCATION CRISIS? Overcrowded classrooms, inadequate learning tools, transport problems, financial constraints…let’s face it; these days obtaining a quality tertiary education is a bit like trying to jog through quicksand. And there doesn’t seem to be any viable solution on the horizon…or does there?
The innovative vU5 Virtual University and Virtual Academy of South Africa offers an accessible, affordable and recognised tertiary education to every community in the country. It literally places the future in the palm of the learner’s hand via their cell phone. Studying can take place anywhere in the world, at any time of day or night, with the assistance of qualified tutors. In fact, the ratio of learner to lecturer at vU5 is 5:1 (hence the power of 5 in the name vU5). The concept of mobile learning or “mLearning” is fast becoming a priority on the world’s educational agenda, and is indeed effective already in some areas of our country. Founder and Managing Director of vU5, Laetitia Nienaber-Oosthuizen, has firsthand experience of the benefits of the system. Her children have all obtained SAQA approved matric certificates through virtual education. “Yet, after a decade, this option is still not available to the majority of our youth,” says Nienaber-Oosthuizen. The good news is that the South African government plans to reach 100% broadband penetration in the country by 2020. This means access to virtual learning for all. More good news is that this “green” method can save learners over 80% of the costs of traditional classroom training in the form of transport, accommodation, books, and computers. As traditional education flounders in a sea of bureaucratic crisis, the rise of virtual learning is a life raft for the youth. The future of quality education lies firmly in the palms of those who embrace technology. Consider the fact that thousands of scholars would not have lost 6 months of education if learning material was available on their cell phones.
Company History vU5 has been piloted for four years to enable a quality education in a virtual learning environment using a mobile phone and/ or computer and passed every quality assurance acid test.
