Ashley Hillman Period 3 SAT Essay Over 200 years ago the founding fathers of the United States developed the basis of America as the rights of the citizens to have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Happiness however is not an aspect of life to be pursued and found but a state of mind. Throughout the course of a lifetime it is human nature to experience the highs and lows. The choice of optimism, hope, and joy may reflect that of personality or may be due to a selfevident decision made at the beginning of each new day. As each obstacle is overcome, each friendship developed, and goal accomplished happiness and joy is found due to hard work and positive attitude and not by fate. In the popular movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, Will Smith acts as an impoverished middleaged homeless man who resides on the streets with his young innocent son. Through the course of the film, Will Smith surpasses the expectations of his employer, his wife, and even himself. He transcends economic status to acquire a leading job at a prestigious company, finally enabling himself to give his son the stable home he only dreamed of. Even though he is robbed, abandoned by his wife, and forced to raise his only child on the streets, he finds happiness by never losing sight of his dreams and goals. Will Smith’s character finds the joy he yearned for in the recognition of the love of his child and the hard work and accomplishment of a seemingly unattainable goal. Happiness is also a choice and decision in that people can take matters that seem uncontrollable and change the situation with the help of cunning, wit, and hope. Cinderella, a fairytale told to young children for centuries has the moral that anything is possible if you set your heart and mind to it. The young Cinderella finds herself having to clean, cook, and wait
upon her evil stepmother and stepsisters, who treat her more as a slave than family. When an invitation to a ball and a chance to meet the prince arrives, Cinderella with the aid of her fairy godmother goes to all costs to present herself to the prince. Cinderella and Prince Charming immediately fall in love, and that love becomes the solution to the problems of Cinderella’s home life. The love that forms between Cinderella and Prince Charming reflects a choice, for love only happens when the heart is open to the affection and the happiness that follows. In life, situations and decision present themselves that appear without the choice of a pleasant outcome; however, greeting each with an amount of optimism and joy changes the result. Positive attitudes and negative attitudes cast different lights on experiences, the choice is in which way one chooses to see it. Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success.
