New Housing Complex Sells for $200 Million

ast August, Atlanta-based Wood Partners opened the 290-unit apartment complex 8th+Hope. Now, the project that had been billed as a $120 million development has been sold — for $200 million. In a press release, Wood Partners announced that the real estate investment trust Essex Property Trust has acquired the 22-story building in the Financial District. The project is

currently 55% occupied, according to the release.

“A lot of positive development and investment activity is taking place in Downtown Los Angeles right now,” Brian Hansen, California director for Wood Partners, said in the release. “8th+Hope has played an important role in this exciting revitalization, and we were active participants in making the area a walkable, livable and connected community with an indoor-outdoor connection in an urban environment.” The project offers one- and two-bedroom apartments, and every unit has floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony.

The rents of nearly $4 a square foot are among the highest in Downtown Los Angeles.

new high-rise is opening in Downtown this summer, but unlike in most buildings, the developer is not seeking long-term inhabitants.

Instead, Vancouver, Canada-based Onni Group is looking for individuals or families staying about a month or more. The company recently announced that its 33-story tower at 888 S. Olive St. will open this summer with the moniker Level DTLA, and that it will offer one- to threebedroom fully furnished apartments. Each of the more than 300 units in the $200 million development will have multiple 40- to 50-inch flat screen TVs, balconies, laundry facilities and a fully stocked kitchen with high-end appliances. “Demand for luxury housing in Downtown Los Angeles is soaring to an all-time high with the area’s recent revitalization,” Javier Cepeda, regional vice president of Onni’s Level Furnished Living, said in a prepared statement. “Level DTLA is primed to welcome upscale guests, Hollywood’s elite, and both local and international leisure and business travelers.” The Downtown Los Angeles building will also have a 37,000-squarefoot, indoor-outdoor facility with a fitness center, a rooftop pool, fireplaces and more.

Ease Up on the Football Frenzy

T

here’s an ironic aspect to the football frenzy breaking out across Los Angeles County: Local residents are exhibiting a fevered passion for football, and in many cases specific teams, despite the fact that no franchise has played a home game in the region for more than two decades. Forget cheering for a brilliant reception or a jarring hit — people are rah-rahing over the possibility of future cheering.

This isn’t a bad thing in concept. However, it is worth remembering who we’re dealing with — the National Football League. This is the same organization run by 32 billionaire team owners who, over the last two decades, have routinely used the nation’s second largest media market, Los Angeles, as leverage to get governments in smaller cities to finance part or all of fancy, revenue-generating stadiums.

We’re not saying that football isn’t coming to Los Angeles. However, we need to be aware of the entity in charge of the process, and the track record that the league has perpetrated.

Granted, there is reason to be enthusiastic. Unlike past football frolicking, which centered on local figures proposing stadiums in different communities, including Downtown Los Angeles, the current effort is being driven by team owners. Stan Kroenke is pushing plans to build an 80,000-seat stadium as part of a massive mixed-use project in Inglewood.

The owners of the Chargers and Raiders are partnering in an exploration of erecting a shared stadium in Carson. Political leaders of these small municipalities are jumping through hoops to make a project happen.

While it all sounds good, we have heard “sounds good” before. In fact, we have heard things that sounded better. Just think back to 2005 when NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue stood on the steps of City Hall and seemed to imply that a preliminary agreement had been reached to bring football to L.A., possibly in a refurbished Coliseum. A decade later, we’re still team-less.

Also worth keeping in mind is that the key decisions won’t be made in Los Angeles. Instead, we’re secondary players, and our football future depends first on what transpires in St. Louis, Oakland and San Diego. If stadium plans come to fruition in those cities, then no team will pack its bags and leave. Forget the claims that a move will happen because coming to Los Angeles increases a franchise’s value — the value is only cashed in when a team is sold, and these owners a) already have enough money, and b) understand the unique power that owning a football team provides.

It’s still worth hoping for football and working to make it happen, including at a proposed Farmers Field in Downtown. We also think that would ultimately be the best proposal, as the $1.4 billion effort would include an upgrade and reinvention of the Convention Center, which would benefit the entire region.

Football fans should be advised, however, to temper the cheering. We’re not close to the end zone. Given all the moving parts, the machinations and the bitter history, the drive is just beginning.

With Public Bike Sharing Slow to Materialize, Private Efforts Are a Great Option

L

os Angeles’ lack of a public bike sharing program is both baffling and dispiriting. The city has faltered as bike shares have been launched, to community cheer, in municipalities including Washington, D.C., Paris and Mexico City. We are also far behind New York City, where the corporate-funded Citi Bike program boasts touch-screen kiosks and more than 300 rental locations.

Why is L.A. trailing so many other big cities when it comes to bike sharing? It’s a good question. With our temperate climate and a need to get people out of cars and reduce auto gridlock, bike sharing here ought to be an obvious option. Los Angeles also has an active and organized bike lobby, and the rousing success of public events such as CicLAvia shows the appetite for two-wheeled travel.

In 2013 it seemed like a citywide bike share was moving forward.

Then, somehow, it fell apart. Now the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is looking to create a countywide bike share. The plan calls for finding an operator and starting with a pilot program centered in Downtown Los Angeles in 2016, and for the Central City to get 65 stations and 1,000 shared bikes. We’ll remain hopeful that things roll forward.

Fortunately, some in the private sector are doing more than hoping and waiting. They are digging into their pockets, buying bicycles, helmets and locks, and creating private bike sharing systems for their residential or office tenants. So far the operators of at least two housing complexes and one office building in Downtown have taken the step. Ideally, others will recognize the worth of such an effort and follow suit.

Los Angeles Downtown News last week wrote about the trio of private bike-sharing efforts. The biggest program is at the new Arts District complex One Santa Fe. There, 50 bicycles are available for tenants to check out as part of an overall transportation plan designed to keep residents of the 438 apartments out of their cars as often as possible. Tenants get to use the beach cruisers free of charge for 24 hours. Helmets and locks are provided.

There is a similar program in the Lorenzo housing complex, near USC, where 30 bicycles are available. A recently launched effort at

City National Plaza offers 13 bicycles for office workers. Staff at the Financial District complex said the initial results have been so successful that the program will be expanded.

This is exactly the type of community-minded and forwardthinking investment that we would like to see more of in Downtown. While the building owners have an initial outlay in terms of buying bikes and accessories, and later-term expenses in the form of maintenance and replacements for lost or wrecked two-wheelers, we think that this will more than pay off in terms of convenience and happier tenants. Many people will like the prospect of not having to buy their own bike, instead knowing they can borrow one to hit the market, to catch a movie or to visit a friend.

This is also a smart way to connect neighborhoods in Downtown. An Arts District resident may not want to walk all the way to South Park to shop or dine, and getting in the car can seem wasteful (not to mention the possible frustration of sitting in traffic and then having to pay for parking). The opportunity to borrow a bike for free solves a lot of problems.

Ideally private bike sharing will be incorporated in other new housing projects. We have already seen instances in which Downtown developers are beginning to include more bicycle than car parking. Why not add to the benefits by actually including bikes?

This idea also has tremendous potential in the office world.

Thousands of people work in Downtown skyscrapers and need to get out of the office at various points in the day. Many of these individuals would embrace the opportunity to leave their car in the garage and bike to lunch or a meeting. It would be great if some of the entities that own multiple office towers embrace what building owner Commonwealth Partners has done at City National Plaza.

Having shared bikes available won’t mean much to a large number of Downtown workers and residents. Some people are uncomfortable biking in the Central City, and others just won’t give up their car, even for a short trip. Still, many people will be open to getting around the community in a different way. The key is giving them the choice and making it easy.

Why Did José Huizar Win So Handily? To Start, He Ran Like His Political Life Depended on It

By Jon Regardie here’s no way to say it except to just say it: José Huizar is a campaign monster.

That was proved — nay, solidified — last week, when Huizar not only beat former County Supervisor Gloria Molina in the 14th District City Council race, but trounced her. The

THE REGARDIE REPORT 66% of the vote that he received — Molina got 24%, with the remainder divided between three fringe candidates — blasted past even the sunniest pre-race prognostications. The victory not only let Huizar avoid a May runoff, it gave him a 6-0 record in elections, with four City Council wins and two school board contest victories before that.

Huizar now has the same number of election triumphs as Michael Jordan has NBA titles. Whoda thunk?

What is even more shocking than the record is how Huizar got here. Six months ago, when Molina entered the race, Huizar’s foundation seemed to be as shaky as a house made of balsa wood. A sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a former deputy looked ready to undermine his re-election bid. He seemed to be on the outs with Mayor Eric Garcetti. Molina’s name recognition and threedecade long record of public service threatened

to splinter Huizar’s constituency.

Yet, it turns out that Molina was the one in a precarious predicament. She ended up like the past-his-prime Muhammad Ali who unwisely challenged champion Larry Holmes in 1980 and got walloped. Or, if you prefer movies to boxing, she’s Boyhood at the Oscars, a film with a great pedigree that loses its momentum and ultimately gets steamrolled by Huizar’s Birdman.

None of this happened by accident. The race ended like it did because of a combination of Team Huizar’s campaign mastery, a little bit of legal mystery, and some serious bungling by the Molina camp.

Now Huizar has five-and-a-half-more years in office (thanks to the election day passage of Charter Amendments 1 and 2). Here are some of the moments that got him where he is.

The Race of His Life: Huizar ran this race like his political life depended on it. His top strategic moment may have been settling the lawsuit filed against him and the city in October 2013

by Francine Godoy, his former Deputy Chief of Staff. The suit unleashed a media frenzy and Huizar was forced to publicly acknowledge an extramarital affair. The city later allocated spending $200,000 for his legal defense. Huizar looked like the walking wounded.

Then, last October, a private settlement was reached and the case was dismissed. It was shrouded in mystery, as the only public revelations were that a) the city paid no money toward the settlement, and b) any actual payment was kept private. No one ever leaked a settlement figure. The result was that Molina lost her best card before she could play it. She couldn’t tell voters that Huizar had cost them a boatload of taxpayer money for his extracurricular dalliances.

They Showed Him the Money: The settlement coincided with Huizar raising more money than any City Council candidate for any office this millennium. He started early, and by July 2014, nine months before election day, he had $650,000 in his campaign war chest. That financial prowess may have scared off potential com-

petitors such as Ana Guerrero, Garcetti’s chief of staff, and former Speaker of the Assembly John Pérez.

The early money, including from numerous developers with projects in Downtown Los Angeles, made it easier for others to keep giving to Huizar — no one would be alone in supporting him. He sucked up cash like an anteater does ants and by election day he had raised more than $866,000, along with another $100,000 in city matching funds.

Add in the more than $600,000 spent on Huizar’s behalf by political action committees and other independent groups, and Huizar and those who like him had about $1.6 million at their disposal.

While the numbers will be refined in coming days, the 11,081 votes collected means Huizar Continued on page 16

Downtown’s Victorian Victory Low-Income Housing Project Opens in Century-Old Historic Core Buildings

By Eddie Kim ike Alvidrez stood on the fifth-floor deck of the New Pershing Apartments on a cloudy Monday afternoon. The Rosslyn Hotel’s intricate stonework and massive heart-shaped rooftop sign loomed from across Main Street. In the distance was City Hall.

“You can hardly hear all the street noise down there. Imagine coming here just to hang out on a sunny day, talk to neighbors, or just sit and read a book,” said Alvidrez, the executive director of Skid Row Housing Trust. “It looks like a condo deck out here.”

That comment was somewhat ironic, considering that rather than residences selling for more than $600 a square foot, the New Pershing contains 69 low-income apartments.

That’s not the only thing that sets SRHT’s $28 million development apart. It also marks the return of one of the Historic Core’s most gorgeous facades, a Victorian masterpiece complete with massive bay windows. The project turned two former separate residential hotels, with uneven floors and bad spacing, into a single five-story edifice. The renovation’s design came from Killefer Flammang Architects, which has worked on numerous market-rate adaptive reuse projects in the Historic Core.

Move-ins began last month and SRHT expects full occupancy of the building at 108 E. Fifth St. in April. The inhabitants will initially be people formerly living on the streets, though

over time there will be a transition and 15 residences will be occupied by non-homeless tenants who make up to 60% of the Area Median Income (which works out to about $34,200 for a single person, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).

The mixed-income model has been a success for SRHT in buildings such as its New Genesis Apartments, just across the street at 456 S. Main St., Alvidrez said.

The New Pershing residences are about 360 square feet and come furnished with kitchens with dark-colored cabinets, a dining table set, a bed and a dresser. The floors are blond wood laminate. Four units are split-level, with the kitchen/dining area and bathroom up top, and a sleeping section below. Large windows flood the rooms with natural light.

For Alvidrez, the project continues SRHT’s aim of giving people the chance to turn their life around by putting them in an attractive environment.

“There’s a better response in terms of recovery when you’re living in a beautiful building you can be proud of,” Alvidrez said.

Building Community Like most new market-rate projects in Downtown, the New Pershing utilizes outdoor space for community building. There is a fourth-floor area with shiny red steel planters; residents will soon get to plant vegetables and fruits for the garden.

general recreation areas and provide views of the Historic Core, the Civic Center and Little Tokyo. On the ground floor is a large courtyard anchored by a huge red brick wall that frames a bundle of young bamboo trees. A community room with a kitchen and lounge sits adjacent to the courtyard.

Similar to other permanent supportive housing projects, the New Pershing has on-site space for case workers to help residents with medical, mental health and counseling needs.

SRHT has a long history with the former Pershing (built in 1889) and Roma (1905) hotels, as they were the first properties the company worked on after forming in 1989. That initial renovation joined the buildings, but was ac-

complished with very little money, Alvidrez said. The resulting layout was inefficient and unwieldy, filled with awkward staircases. Residents often spent time in their own corner of the structure without interacting much with neighbors.

SRHT aimed to raise enough money to build a new structure on the lot, and even considered erecting a tower. That was shot down by the (now-defunct) Community Redevelopment Agency.

“We’ve found that larger buildings work better in terms of our long-term financial impact, but the CRA said no,” Alvidrez said. “They wanted to preserve how the building appeared from the pedestrian point of view.”

March 9, 2015 Construction finally began in April 2013. It required gutting the building while leaving the facade intact. Massive steel support beams were shoved into the ground to keep the walls upright, and the new structure was built and essentially attached to the exterior.

While the work on the Victorian frame was expensive, it was worth it to preserve a neighborhood “jewel,” Alvidrez said. It even impresses Killefer Flammang partner Wade Killefer, whose experience in the area goes back to designing the transformation of the first century-old buildings in Tom Gilmore’s Old Bank District.

“It’s very extravagant. People don’t build like this anymore,” Killefer said. “Beyond that, it’s functional now. You can see people coming in and out of the building. It has wide open corridors. People get to know each other and build community.”

Blair Besten, executive director of the Historic Core Business Improvement District, praised the project for helping alleviate homelessness while fitting in with the neighborhood’s look and feel.

“Skid Row Housing Trust is a good operator, and my one hope is that they can recruit tenants from our area and Downtown, which has such a surplus of people who need housing,” Besten said.

Alvidrez said the next task is filling the roughly 3,600 square feet of retail space on the ground floor. While SRHT is considering a variety of tenants, its goal is to raise enough money to fund a meeting center that can hold art and enrichment activities for the community, Alvidrez said. He imagines it as a place for poetry nights, pop-up galleries and civic discussions, with people who live in the building and their neighbors all coming together. eddie@downtownnews.com

Related Splits With Nazarian’s Company on Grand Avenue Project Search for New Hotel Partner Is on After Break With SBE Entertainment

Bill Witte, president of Related California, which has spent more than a decade working with the city and county to develop a Frank Gehry-designed mega-project, told Downtown News that Related has broken off its partnership with SBE Entertainment, the company headed by nightlife mogul Sam Nazarian.

SBE was identified in November 2013 as the partner Related needed to build two towers and a large retail and entertainment complex in a single phase. SBE was slated to operate an approximately 300-room SLS Hotel as part of the project. The other building would be a residential tower. The complex would rise on the site known as Parcel Q, which is currently a parking structure across the street from the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the under-construction museum The Broad.

“We made the decision not to move forward with SBE in early January and shared that with City and County representatives at that time,” Witte said in an email.

Witte did not elaborate on the reason for the split with SBE. It follows some well-publicized troubles that Nazarian and SBE encountered in December. During his attempts

to get a gaming license for an SLS Hotel in Las Vegas, an investigation revealed that Nazarian had used cocaine and had paid as much as $3 million to a convicted felon in a possible case of extortion. Nazarian got the license, but stepped back from running the hotel, letting a partner take over.

A spokesman for Related said the company intends to have a new hotel partner within several months. Witte said he believes Downtown Los Angeles has a “significant void” of what he termed “luxury lifestyle” hotels.

“We are actively engaged in discussions with a number of these hotel brands and operators and have gained significant traction with a number of them,” Witte said.

A Related representative last month said the company hopes to break ground on the development dubbed The Grand in 2016. The representative also said that a pre-leasing effort has begun in the attempt to find tenants for the project’s retail, food and entertainment space.

This marks the latest twist in a long, winding process for The Grand. Related was selected in 2004 to develop a collection of parcels on Bunker Hill owned by the city and the county. A city-county Joint Powers Authority oversaw the proceedings, and in 2008 approved designs for what was then a $3 billion project designed by Gehry.

When the recession took hold and lending markets froze, those plans were thwarted.

Related later opted to take a piecemeal approach to development, working on one plot at a time, but without Gehry. It relinquished one parcel, which became the site of The Broad, and built its first tower, the $120 million The Emerson, which opened last fall.

In November 2013, Related revealed that Gehry was back on the project and that a partnership had been established with SBE. The project also had a new, updated design.

Despite the shake-up, Witte expressed optimism about the future of the project.

AEG Planning 38-Story Hotel Near L.A. Live Expansion of the J.W. Marriott Would Create 755 Rooms

Marriott hotels and its management contract for the Los Angeles Convention Center. Now, the company is looking to be an even bigger player: AEG officials announced last week that they are planning a 755-room, 38-story tower as an expansion of the J.W. Marriott.

An elevated walkway over Olympic would connect it to the main J.W. Marriott.

AEG hopes to begin construction by early next year and open the expansion in 2018.

AEG chose to expand the J.W. Marriott rather than build a new hotel partly because it allows for growth while maintaining brand continuity, said company spokesman Michael Roth.

“We looked at a lot of alternatives and in terms of our investment and the need to attract and book bigger groups to increase our convention business, this was the best choice,” Roth said.

The project follows a previous failed proposal for the site. AEG in 2013 signed a deal to sell the parcel to Portland-based Williams/Dame & Associates, which last summer opened the Courtyard

by Marriott/Residence Inn joint hotel at 901 W. Olympic Blvd. However, that deal was nixed when the project’s funding fell through, Roth said. AEG then opted to move forward on its own.

The expansion plan drew praise from Convention Center Executive Director Bud Ovrom, one of many who has long clamored for more hotel rooms in Downtown. The area near the Convention Center needs 3,000-5,000 additional rooms to maximize tourism activity and business at the trade show hub, added Bruce Baltin, senior vice president at hospitality firm PKF Consulting.

Baltin said there has been an uptick in area hotel development, with the debut of the Ace Hotel and the Courtyard/Residence Inn, the upcoming completion of the 900-room Wilshire Grand replacement, and the plan for a 18-story hotel at developer Greenland’s Metropolis. Still, he said, more rooms are needed.

“It’s a tough climate, and hotel development has been so low for so many years. We’ve been below the national average for hotel development because it’s competing with other uses with regard to development and land costs,” Baltin said. “In Downtown, land values are rising and it’s mostly multi-family housing that’s

AEG will pursue a tax subsidy from the city to help fund the hotel, Roth said. The company received transient occupancy tax subsidies from the city to build the original Ritz/J.W. Marriott.

‘The Price’ Is Mostly RIght A Rarely Performed Arthur Miller Play Hits the Taper Stage

By Jeff Favre uch of Arthur Miller’s prolific career is judged in unfair comparisons to itself.

Miller, who died in 2005, penned three of the most enduring plays of the 20th century — All My Sons, Death of a Salesman and The Crucible — between 1947 and 1953. He never reached the same critical or commercial success with any of his other titles for the next 50 years.

It’s a disservice, however, to discount several of Miller’s later works, in particular The Price, simply because they don’t measure up to his trio of masterpieces. Despite the shortcomings of a slow opening scene and a few strays toward heavy-handedness, The Price, which premiered in 1968, is an impressive, and at times heartbreaking, examination of a family’s unified sense of regret and remorse.

The Price is not revived frequently, and last appeared on Broadway in 2000. Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie deserves credit for giving Downtown audiences a chance to experience it with a remarkable cast that includes an unforgettable performance by octogenarian Alan Mandell. Directed by Garry Hynes, the play runs through March 22 at the Mark Taper Forum.

As with Miller’s characters, the flaws in The Price are not hard to spot, and Hynes makes the mistake of exacerbating the biggest one by dragging the first 15 minutes. The mood is established before characters even appear in Matt Saunders’ set. An overwhelming display of early 20th century wood furniture stacked 20 feet high, collecting dust in the attic of a Manhattan home, speaks volumes about its owners.

That sense of history primes the audience, but momentum is lost when police officer Victor Franz (Sam Robards) enters alone and spends a few minutes in silence, walking through the furniture and glancing at other items, before he plays a 1920s record of people laughing. Without context, Victor’s silent musings lack emotional impact.

From there, Miller gets tied up in too much backstory, as Victor and his wife Esther (Kate Burton) discuss their woes, as well as the impending sale of the family furniture to a dealer because the building is soon to be demolished.

Victor has tried calling his long estranged brother, Walter (John Bedford Lloyd), to talk about the sale, but they haven’t connected.

Esther is unhappy with their lives and drinks to cope with her sadness. She hopes the money for the furniture will encourage Victor to retire from a job he hates, giving them one last shot at happiness.

The somber tone and steady pace portend a long two-and-a-half hours, until Esther leaves and Gregory Solomon (Mandell) struggles up the attic stairs. From there, everything changes.

Solomon, an 89-year-old who seems much older, is a mostly retired dealer. Staggered, literally, by the amount of furniture in the room, he stalls in every way imaginable instead of quoting a price. Miller’s humor in this part of the play is original and fresh, and Mandell’s Solomon is one of the funniest and most interesting characters to cross the Taper stage in years.

His halting walk, wild hand gestures and somewhat intelligible mumbles elevate the material in the same way Art Carney did as Ed Norton on “The Honeymooners.” Yet, it’s clear from his pearls of wisdom, such as, “With furniture you can’t get emotional,” that he has seen it all.

He’s right, of course, because the furniture

is the impetus for bringing out the angst between Victor and his late-arriving brother. Walter is a successful doctor who Victor believes abandoned him and their father after the stock market crash that demolished the family fortune. Victor, feeling responsible for the father who spent his remaining years sitting all day in the attic, left college and his dreams of a different career.

After Solomon’s appearance The Price takes off. It’s almost as if Miller found his footing in the script, delivering a second act that, though a bit long, is loaded with gut-wrenching exchanges between the brothers, both of whom have valid points about why and how things went wrong.

Robards and Lloyd are impressive in their restraint, remaining matter-of-fact in their tone and mannerisms until they are unable to con-

tain the rage that has been building for years.

Through it all, the character that’s causing the pain is the absent dad. Though he died long ago, his chair sits center stage, a constant reminder that he’s still pulling the strings.

For much of his career, Miller’s favorite emotion in his writing quill was regret, and The Price is no exception. It may not rival Death of a Salesman in its scope, but to discount the entirety of this remarkable work for its few faults is a mistake.

There’s a sense of loss and pain in this impressive revival that’s universal and timeless, and it should prompt audiences to examine their lives on the way home and for days afterward.

Finding a New ‘Barber’ L.A. Opera Show Has Big Voices But Suffers From Flat Staging

By Eddie Kim s legend has it, the debut of Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville in 1816 wasn’t just a dud, but a disaster.

The crowd at the Teatro Argentina in Rome jeered and yelled at the performers. Much of the outburst came from supporters of rival composer Giovanni Paisiello, who had already written an opera based on the play by Pierre Beaumarchais.

Fast-forward about 200 years and Rossini’s Barber stands at the peak of the comic opera repertoire. Its easy humor and score, rife with recognizable compositions, resonates with audiences. No wonder it’s one of the most performed operas around the world.

Many laughs rang out in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion during the opening-night performance of Barber, no surprise considering the tongue-in-cheek, slapsticky libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The lilting arias and vocal acrobatics from the leads drew warm, extended applause. Conductor James Conlon’s lyrical and balanced leading of the orchestra was, as usual, impeccable.

So why does L.A. Opera’s revival of a 2009 production feel a bit... flat? Its most energetic conflicts sometimes look listless. Its most intimate moments lack a sense of closeness. Its stars sometimes don’t appear to have any focused physical act in mind.

Part of the problem is director Trevore Ross’ often static staging that gives performers little to do. More coherent and striking movement could heighten the tension and deliver a sharper, more physical comic edge.

This isn’t to say Barber lacks visual appeal. The opera, which has four more performances through March 22, opens in dramatic fashion, with just a big yellow moon hanging over a dark horizon. Piece by piece, the set rolls in to form a beautiful Italian street, colored in austere black, silver and white tones. Soon comes the first sight gag: The protagonist, Count Almaviva, pops out of the top of a tiny carriage held by two servants before

launching into song.

Barber follows the wealthy Almaviva (René Barbera), who is in love with the beautiful Rosina (Elizabeth DeShong). He woos her using an alter ego, Lindoro, to confirm that she’s falling for him, not his riches. However, Rosina is guarded by the jealous Doctor Bartolo (Alessandro Corbelli), who wants to marry her himself.

Things look hopeless until the arrival of Almaviva’s former servant, Figaro, who suggests the count disguise himself as a drunk soldier assigned to stay in Bartolo’s home, just to get in contact with Rosina.

The set soon transitions into the grand mansion, which looks like the scene of a sleek Vogue photo shoot, complete with a lanky silver tree. It’s the site of one big highlight, the “La calunnia” aria of Don Basilio (Kristinn Sigmundsson), in which he sug-

gests that Bartolo should slander Almaviva to cut his courtship short. The imagery of a sheet billowing out into an ever-growing cloud around Basilio as he sings is wickedly effective.

This Barber could use a few more similar touches. The production, originally from Teatro Real Madrid, has a gorgeous design, but one that leaves a lot of room for the players to use. They often don’t do it well — Ross has many scenes in which people pace the floor without much focus, including in duets. Figaro and Almaviva may be singing “Such an exquisitely clever plan!” together, but there’s no sense of conspiratorial deviousness in their motions.

There is a sizeable chorus, but its members are only rarely effectively deployed, such as in the finale of the first act. Even then, when a massive police squad confronts Almaviva (in his drunk soldier garb), there’s a lack of choreography that adds energy to what should be a tense scene. Why have the guards standing in neat lines in the background?

Despite these shortcomings, Barber has some standout performances, in particular mezzo-soprano DeShong, who handles Rosina’s songs with grace and virtuosity. Barbera, meanwhile, shows off why he won Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition in 2011; his punchy tenor and easy top notes sound crisp and full. Russian baritone Rodion Pogossov could give Figaro a bit more physical swagger, but he displays great vocal agility and a lyrical flair.

Also strong are Corbelli, a veteran Rossini singer, as Bartolo, and Sigmundsson, whose thundering bass gives a sense of weight and danger to Basilio. There’s much to like in the pit, especially with Conlon keeping the score grounded and sensitive with a few smart pushes of tempo that add a flourish to big moments.

No doubt fans of Rossini will have little to complain about after seeing this show, and the literally colorful finale is a nice, if mildly confusing, finish. Comic brilliance, however, has as much to do with the subtleties of body language and movement as it does speech, and Barber winds up a bit short.

Everywhere Man: In the six months leading up to the election, Huizar was seemingly everywhere in the 14th District, which stretches from Boyle Heights to Eagle Rock and includes nearly all of Downtown. While this prompted some sniping that he shows up only when it’s politically expedient, the work paid off. The activity ramped up even further in the last month, which just happened to be when absentee ballots were going out. Huizar orchestrated the mammoth Night on Broadway on Jan. 31 and held a big York Avenue street festival tied to a park opening in Highland Park on Feb. 21. He was at events in El Sereno, attended the groundbreaking of the Sixth Street Bridge and cheered sidewalk improvements in South Park, among many other things. He even appeared at the Arts District dog park last month for an event titled Happy Healthy Dog Day. I swear I’m not making that up.

Master of Mail: Huizar’s cash advantage allowed him to drop a mountain of mail, and while many people avoid campaign paraphernalia like it’s dog poop in Spring Street Park, it was consistent. It was also intriguingly varied — late last month he sent a mailer, in English and Tagalog, touting his backing from boxing champ Manny Pacquiao! Before seeing a photo of the two together I’d have wagered a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream that they had never been in the same room at the same time. Yet Huizar’s campaign team obviously knew there were votes in the Filipino community, and no one hooks those voters like the guy who’s going to lose to Floyd Mayweather in two months.

Social Butterfly: Huizar’s posse was all over Facebook and Twitter, particularly with online communities in Downtown. While Molina also had a social media campaign, Downtown web users were particularly vocal after a Central City debate in which she criticized a push for more density in the area. Huizar engaged the populace to his advantage.

Questionable Team: The following can unequivocally be said about Gloria Molina: She is a political legend who has done tremendous work and broken barriers. She was the first Latina elected to the City Council and the first Latina on the Board of Supervisors. She could be combative, but during her decades in office she secured many victories for her constituents. She has been frequently independent and, unlike many other politicians, can never be accused of being owned by unions or other special interests. Even with the CD14 loss, her legacy is secure.

That said, she was never able to form a competitive election team. Many political watchers scratched their head when she hired Fred Register to helm her campaign, and not someone with deeper ties to the community. While she likely found raising money more difficult than anticipated, election whisperers say that she should have been aggressively hitting up every vendor who ever had a contract with the county during her time in office.

Then there were the bungled endorsements, with the MayorSam website breaking news of her backing from Sen. Barbara Boxer, former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilman Gil Cedillo. This was not a crisp campaign.

Too Much Mrs. Nice Gal?: The most intriguing component of Molina’s loss may say more about her as a person than a politician — she played it nicer than anyone expected.

Given the Godoy lawsuit, and another $185,000 the city paid after a Huizar car accident in Boyle Heights, many thought the mud and blood would fly. The belief was that ceaseless attacks would be the cornerstone of Molina’s campaign, that voters would be constantly reminded of Huizar’s personal and moral shortcomings.

These were brought up, but not all that often and not to the degree anticipated — at least when compared to some past elections. Maybe Molina thought negative campaigning would not play well long-term. Or maybe, just maybe, Molina chose to take higher ground, and to try to make the contest about leadership and serving constituents. It’s something everyone asks for, but that rarely occurs.

Whatever her intent, it didn’t translate into votes. Now Huizar is in the CD14 seat until 2020… unless he sets his sights on something else before then. regardie@downtownnews.com
