LISD’s annual Cowboy Breakfast was a smashing success. Students, parents and faculty came out early this morning decked out on their western wear. There was great food, line dancing, singing, hobby horse racing and even a couple of donkeys.

Thank you to all of the clubs, staff, our wonderful food service department, custodians and maintenance crew and everyone else who helped make this year another wonderful event.

Stacey Young Leaders

Page 3 of 11 Jan. 27, 2012

YOUNG LEADERS London Slater and Raejone’ Lucas spent the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend at the Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly (RYLA) which is held at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels.

The purpose of this assembly is to give students an opportunity to learn and to exchange ideas on leadership techniques and topical issues with outstanding community student leaders. Students must be a junior in high school to attend this assembly. The entire weekend is an interactive weekend with every session building on the previous one. Along with London and Raejone’, Alex Bentancourt from Stacey was also there as one of the Team Leaders. He was chosen to return after attending his junior year. If you get a chance, ask London and Raejone’ about their experience. They have made friends from all over the State and are in constant communications with these new friends.

Mrs. Torre’s Science

Page 4 of 11 Jan. 27, 2012

Students in Mrs. Torre’s science class demonstrate Sir Isaac Newton’s First Law of Motion: An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion, in a straight line, unless it is acted upon by an outside force. This is also known as the concept of “inertia.”

Don’t try this at home with the good dishes!!!

Fantasy Football

Page 6 of 11 Jan. 27, 2012

Well, the season is about to end, and the Super Bowl is upon us. Congrats to the New England Patriots and the New York Gaints. Also congratulations to our fantasy football leaders! Our final rankings were: 1. Joshua Alvarez 2. Andrew Del Vecchio 3. Ethan Newberry 4. Ms. Fohlmeister 5. TIED!!! Ethan Savey and Adrian Garcia

The club celebrated with prizes from some generous teams (Cincinnati Bengals, San Francisco 49er’s, Carolina Panthers, Washington Redskins, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers). It was a great year, and the students worked very hard. While our numbers did dwindle this season due to requirements to remain in the program, those that did tough it out worked very hard and should be congratulated for their hard work.

Pictured are some of the members: (left to right) : Joshua Alveraz, Adrian Garcia, Ethan Savey, Andrew Del Vecchio, Miranda Mayfield, Cameron Wilder, Ethan Newberry. Not pictured: Adrienne Suglia, Ms. Fohlmeister

Foundation helping students find college scholarships By Marissa Villa Initially run in the San Antonio Express News

When Brian Morris was a high school student, he applied for scholarships to help him pay for college. Morris, who graduated from Virginia Allred Stacey Junior/Senior High School in 1998, looked to the San Antonio Area Foundation. He was awarded several scholarships that helped him pay for his education. Now, almost 15 years later, Morris has started his own fund for high school students at the San Antonio Area Foundation.

The Brian Morris College Gateway Scholarship Fund is one of dozens of scholarships that have quickly approaching application deadlines. In February alone, there are deadlines for 47 scholarships. In March, there's an additional group of 30 scholarships that have deadlines. Several, in addition to the Morris scholarship, are geared towards students who live on the Southside. “It's important that they start now because they will need a recommendation letter and of course they will need to fill out the application, write short essays so it does take a little time,” said Bernice Uresti, scholarship program officer at the foundation. Many of the scholarships are funded by people like Morris, who, although he now lives in Arlington, Va., still believes it's important to give back.

“I was coming off a full time job, starting my own company and it was something I wanted to do,” said Morris, who graduated from Ohio University and now owns a consulting company
