At the heart of the community
Funday is big success! Lache Community Funday once again proved to be a success - with more people than ever enjoying the fun! The annual event, organized by Lache Park Neighborhood Management, saw residents of all ages enjoying a wide variety of activities, from the bungee run to the BBQ. The day started triumphantly, as the parade through Lache created a carnival atmosphere and captured the imagination of local residents. In the showcase of the day, young Tyler Flynn became the 2011 winner of Lache Has Talent, wowing the judges with his routine to Bruno Mars’ hit song, ‘Grenade’. More inside on Page 4...

Message from David Challen Acting Chair of Lache Park Neighbourhood Management At the Board meeting held on 8th June 2011 it was unanimously decided to change the public name of Lache Park Ltd to Lache Park Neighbourhood Management - Lache Park NM for short. The registered name of the charity remains Lache Park Ltd. So in future on our stationery, newsletters etc the letter heading will be changed to Lache Park Neighbourhood Management and the website with also change. The logo remains unchanged. This new name will describe more accurately the role of our charity and hopefully be more understandable to funders.
Message from Alex Tate Lache Ward Councillor It was good to meet up with Ed Milliband on his recent visit to Wrexham University on the Policy Forum tour. Ed showed real commitment to working to find a way to address the ever widening gap in communities leaving those at the bottom end with less and less chance to move forward in life. Recent social disorder and criminal activity has appalled us all and points to the danger of what may be the result of the inability to tackle the issue by successive governments. Let’s hope for punishment that fits the crime and a real change in policy to get to the root of the problem. Turning to local issues, we all had a great Lache Fun Day when I was delighted to help judge the Talent competition with Tyler shining as a worthy winner. It was truly heart warming to see our young people develop their skills and show amazing self assurance which will be of great benefit as they move forward in life and enter the word of work with heads held high! It was also good to be involved in the Northgate Church fair where food was free and stalls sold new and nearly new items for 50p and under with my stall selling bargain bags and shoes from 20p. Progress is being made on plans to develop the LAPA field to become a useable community space – a possible Lache Country Park with the site being cleared this autumn. We can begin discussions at our Community Forum in September on just how residents would like to see it developed. Good news also that CW&C have agreed that we will no longer be joined up with Curzon, Westminster and Handbridge for community forums but can have our own dedicated meetings where discussion will be on issues that affect the greater Lache area only. We will have our first Lache Park Forum on 22nd September at 6pm in the Community Centre with reports on the Community Wardens, from the dog Warden, PCSO’s and the NHS. It will be a good opportunity to start discussions on issues such as the LAPA field and also ideas on renovating the Community Centre itself. At a meeting this week with Steve Robinson, Chief Executive of CW&C, he agreed to funding the renovations and for us also to have much greater community involvement in what happens and how money is spent in Lache. So hopefully there will be a good turnout on the 22nd and we can get started with a concentrated focus on what really matters in Lache.
Community News Lache Funday proves to be a hit once again! Lache Funday was again a big hit with the locals as it made it’s annual return in July. On a glorious day, with the sun shining, young and old in the community were able to enjoy a host of activities, stalls and treats. The day started off with a parade around Lache featuring Giants, dragons, the King and Queen of Lache and samba drumming and chanting, before things moved into the grounds of Lache Community Centre. The main attraction of the day was Lache Has Talent, hosted by Lache resident Blake Duckers. This event once again showcased a huge variety of local talent and was greatly enjoyed by spectators and participants and spectators alike. As usual Lache Fm’s top reporters Dan Burns, Brandon Clarendon and Rhys Roberts were at the heart of the action, and even managed to get and interview with ’Lache Has Talent’ 2011 winner, Tyler Flynn. One of the popular events was the circus skills, as children learnt how to use the diablo, and walk on stilts amongst other activities. There was also a bouncy castle and a bungee run available too, as well as stalls to make bracelets and fruit kebabs. In the raffle, there were a host of prizes up for grabs, with the first prize being a 50 pounds High Street shopping voucher. There were refreshments on offer to all with a BBQ available, and free pizza from the Pizza Hut Delivery stall which went down a treat with everyone! A spokesperson for Lache Park Neighbourhood Management, said “It was a great day and a success yet again. There seemed to be a lot of people there, and the weather was on our side too! People enjoyed what we had organised, and I think we can all be proud of our efforts.”
Community News Lache FM returns... and will be back! Lache FM returned in July, with a four day live radio broadcast extravaganza! The broadcast, from 14th-17th July, featured many different shows and included many people from the community kicking off at 7am on Thursday 14th with ‘The Full English Breakfast Show’, hosted by Dan Burns. There were many different daytime shows including ‘The Ann & Les Show’, ‘Mini Time’ with Zibby D and ‘All Muck and Magic’ with Steve Jones, before John Rankin Mills’ ‘Interactive Drive’ Time show. In the evening listeners had Mike Powell’s show ‘The Zone’, whilst Boyd hosted ‘I’ve got a soap box’, before ‘The Late Night Rock Project’ with Flash, and Eddie Shields’ famous ‘In The Mix’ show. The broadcast also featured Chris Gentile, live from Corfu, Greece, and a ‘Funday Special’ show, including coverage of Lache Has Talent, in which Tyler Flynn took the top prize. It was a huge success, as the studio was inundated with texts, e-mails, and calls for song requests, competition entries and much more. However, before the broadcast began, plans were thrown into chaos, as regulatory board Ofcom, changed the Frequency of Lache FM from 87.9 to 87.6 - just two days before the station went live. The team then began a grueling 36 hour campaign to amend posters, flyers and logos with a new 87.6 FM frequency. Plans are now afoot for another live FM broadcast in November, but Lache FM is still live each Thursday from 1pm via www.lachefm.org.uk. To get involved contact Chris on 01244 677 721.

Community News New addition to Garden Village allotment Lache Garden Village has added a brand new log cabin to it’s allotment as it looks to move on for the future. The log cabin, which is 7.5 x 4 meters in size, has been added so that the project can provide a base for allotment volunteers to hold meetings and social events. The cabin will also be used for courses / workshops run by the Garden Village project, where people can come and learn how to grow fruit and vegetables in their own gardens. The allotment has been used by the Lache Garden Village project since 2009, and the project has recently been granted lease of the area until 2014. Bob McCombe said ”this a good example of a community led scheme which appeals to a wide cross section of Lache residents. It's a healthy way to meet new people and provide inexpensive, nutritious food for your family. We are always looking for new members so give us a call and arrange a time to come along and we will help you develop your gardening skills.’’ You can contact Bob on 01244 679 796

Feta baked with tomato & oregano Ingredients for Bake - 1 tablespoon of olive oil - 2 garlic cloves, sliced - A big pinch chilli flakes - 3 ripe fresh tomatoes - 2 x 400g tins plum tomatoes, drained (full of antioxidants) - A small handful oregano leaves, chopped or dried oregano - 300g feta cheese, broken up into large chunks - Crusty bread, to serve
Although the summer has been quite disappointing for UK tomato growers, you can still get lots of lovely fresh, extra tasty tomatoes at this time of year, making this recipe a lovely meal from July to September. Cooked feta keeps its shape but becomes lovely and spreadable when heated. Serve this with warm crusty bread to scoop up the sauce or over pasta with steamed vegetables
Method - Preheat the oven to 200C/ Fan 180C/ Gas Mark 6. - Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a pan, add the garlic and cook for a minute. If using dried oregano add it now but fresh can be added later. - Add the chilli and all the tomatoes and simmer for 25 minutes until thickened. Season with pepper (not salt as feta is quite salty) and stir in the fresh oregano. - Put the feta in an ovenproof dish, cover with sauce and bake for 20 minutes before serving.
