COSTA RICA 2012 Service Trip

Location

Monteverde is a small region in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Due to its vast stretches of protected cloud forest, the Monteverde region is one of the most biologically diverse spots on the planet. Besides its protected biological treasures, Monteverde is a peaceful, beautiful, agrarian community steeped in ecological tourism. It is one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica. This program aims to give participants the opportunity to serve in a rural area in Costa Rica. Participants will be exposed to eco-tourism, agroecology, community development, women in development, fair trade agriculture and lots of fun!


Schedule Day 1: Travel to San Luis Waterfall at The Leiton Three Gen-

eration Family Farm; Lecture: History, Economics and Politics in Costa Rica Day 2: Travel to Vargas Farm: Mixed Crop Farm and Family Soap-Making Microenterprise Business; Ecobambu Papermaking microenterprise; visit Small-scale subsistence/agroecology farm and dinner Day 3-5: Serve/work in village of San Luis. Service projects are focused around working with the Development Association of San Luis (made up of volunteer local leaders from all village committees). Helping with Health Center small remodeling projects with construction components, electrical work, painting and green space. Community Center water installation, repair concrete floor, paint and other projects. Day 6: Work; visit CASEM (women’s arts and crafts cooperative) Day 7: Monteverde Reserve Natural History Walk/Talk; Selvatura Zip-Line Canopy Tour. All participants will reside in a comfortable modest hotel, the Hotel Atardecer, within walking distance of downtown Santa Elena and tucked away, off of the main road, in a friendly neighborhood. The hotel is owned and operated by a three generation family of women. All meals are included in the program fee and many of these are provided by the hotel. The hotel also offers a laundry service for an additional fee.

Arrive: Saturday, June 30 Return: Saturday, July 7 Program Cost $1,000 per person

Includes: Lodging, three meals per day, in-country transportation and activities, service project costs and exit taxes. Does Not Include: Airfare, passport, personal expenses, independent travel or international health insurance. Application Information
