19 Ideas Are Like Threads class

¬

Senior Portfolio semester

¬

Spring 2019 instructor

CONCEPT

Being a designer requires tying together many threads, such as research, mood, color, design brief, history, and feedback. We also weave a little bit of ourselves into our work, infusing it with life. TASK

Follow the thread (find it in each chapter opener). Enjoy the journey.

OBJECTIVE

Design a conference of conceptual/experimental nature that focuses on typography and design. Produce a 60-page takeaway book, a promotional poster, and digital conference badge. APPROACH

The umbrella conference, Code-Icon is an annual event that focuses on a different aspect of “code” every year. This year, the conference will look at the evolution of what “code” has meant throughout written history. Because the conference is about a technical and often dry subject, conference organizers are taking a different approach this year. The book is intended to be a fun, whimsical take on a history book or scientific text about evolution, appealing to both kids and adults. Keywords include “quirky”, “colorful” and “cartoon-like”.

OBJECTIVE

Choose a topic that is meaningful to you for a semester-long investigation and create a solution that is largely driven by visual elements. Determine the vehicles best suited for delivery of the solution. APPROACH

An overdependence on social media often leaves people missing true human connection and daily personal satisfaction. This conference seeks to introduce Craft into workplaces and educational institutions. Crafts engage us mentally and physically, tie us to traditions, foster connections, and encourage creativity. The conference is geared towards business leaders and educators. I was inspired to reframe Craft as something beyong scrapbooking and watercolors; something that could appeal to a wide audience. Since crafts are a passion of mine, I immersed myself in the research by attending workshops and classes, which I photographed for the book.

Visual Systems 1 semester

Fall 2017 instructor

¬

Troy Alders

OBJECTIVE

Design the visual system for a fictitious music festival. Name the festival and create a logo, poster (or poster series), website, mobile app, festival ticket, as well as product applications. APPROACH

DropKaas is an electronic dance music (EDM) festival powered entirely by sun and wind, in Joshua Tree National Park, where these resources are abundant. DropKaas is Dutch for “licorice cheese”. The Dutch is a nod to big name DJs from the Netherlands and Belgium who have had a big influence on the EDM scene; the randomness of the words evokes the playful spirit of music festivals. The pulsating, bright colors reflect the light shows and clothing typical of EDM festivals, as well as the intense colors of sunsets in Joshua Tree. The use of circles evokes the balloons and beach balls that bounce around at the events, as well as sun spots. [p a g e ]

OBJECTIVE

Create a memorable brand for a boutique business chain based in San Francisco. Bring the brand to life through a logo, color palette, stationery system, and on-brand postcards. APPROACH

Bitter Bar is a retail chain selling to the food and beverage industry and mixology enthusiasts. They also offer classes in mixology and the crafting of homemade bitters. Since bitters are made from botanicals such as herbs, bark, flowers, and roots, the logo is a bright, updated take on traditional botanical illustrations. The modern twist is designed to tie in to the current popularity of craft cocktails and home bar carts.

OBJECTIVE

The boutique brand created in the previous project is throwing an event in San Francisco. The task is to define the visual brand of the event and employ it through the deliverables. APPROACH

In order to tie in with the Bitter Bar brand, I took exact elements from that design and literally “mixed them up” to give a recognizable and connected feel to this event. The mixing of the elements is also a visual metaphor for the art of mixology.

Thomas McNulty

OBJECTIVE

A rebranding of an existing sports venue, airline, or taxi service. In addition to a new logo, design the visual standards guide and a stationery set. APPROACH

The Iditarod Trail Invitational is different from the better known Iditarod sled race in that there are no dogs involved. Participants must ski, snowshoe, or bike the distance. The inspiration for the logo comes from the shape of Alaska, where the race is held. Its geometric shape mimics ice crystals and also has a cool, hard feel. The colors mimic the environment of the race. The logo incorporates a reflection, which represents both the mirror-like ice as well as the inward, reflective journey that characterizes what it takes to make it to the finish line.

OBJECTIVE

Create a functioning mobile app that fills a need which you have identified. Write the design brief, conduct user interviews, create a paper prototype, user journey, and app icon in addition to the app. APPROACH

Commuting in the Bay Area can be time consuming and frustrating. BART is a good option, but the scramble for parking spaces during the morning rush hour can be a deterrent to many potential users. I created a mobile app called ParkSmart. Using sensor technology, it allows users to see how many empty spaces are available at the selected station so that they can make an informed decision about their commute.

OBJECTIVE

Animate the logo of an existing or fictional business to bring the spirit of the brand to life. APPROACH

The logo for the restaurant chain Mixt has always been one of my favorites. On the company website I discovered variations of that logo that show the four seasons, but which are not used in the restaurants or packaging. I felt that these logos could be featured more prominently, to emphasize the restaurant’s focus on seasonal ingredients. Adding color and animating the icons for the four seasons would attract viewers’ attention in a fun and engaging manner, and make use of this beautiful asset.

TAKEAWAY

We don’t accomplish anything in this world alone … and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one’s life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something. SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR APPRECIATION

I am forever grateful to my teachers at AAU who have taught me so much and basically showed me a whole new world: Troy Alders, Scot Crisp, Jasmine Friedl, Ariel Grey, David Hake, Phil Hamlett, Wioleta Kaminska, Thomas McNulty. A huge mahalo to Mary Scott, whose words and feedback took my work to a whole other level … so blessed to have been your student! My heart overflows with love for friends and family (+ dog) who basically carried me to this point. Especially Dan Z., Erin C., and (hugely) Donna B. Mauli Ola, I love you to the moon and back again and again. Most of all, MAHALO KE AKUA.
