OPENING KEYNOTE SESSION Leadership in Health Care Today William C. McGinly, Ph.D., CAE President, Chief Executive Officer Association for Healthcare Philanthropy

Leadership is challenging — challenging to demonstrate and to deliver. Leadership does not simply happen, rather it is taught, learned, developed and nurtured in and by those who desire to achieve, stand and deliver. It is PEOPLE who influence leader styles. Learning about leadership begins early and never ends. Significant challenges in health care today require the enhancement of skills, guts,

moxie, risk taking and beliefs that transcend the every day. During this session you will hear about the leadership characteristics of people in your own life so you can recognize what you need to nurture and develop in yourself to be an effective leader. Also, we will deliver the top ten characteristics associated with high functioning leaders in health care and how philanthropy is an integral part of that role.

William C. McGinly, Ph.D., CAE With more than 40 years nonprofit management experience, Dr. William C. McGinly is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), representing over 4,800 executives raising funds for nonprofit health care providers. McGinly, who has been named for 15 consecutive years in the NonProfit Times Power & Influence Top 50, is a former board member for the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University Indianapolis; a past chairman of the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives (GWSAE); an active member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE); an I/D/E/A/ Fellow; a Certified Association Executive (CAE); and received his doctorate in administration from The American University.

Physician/Caregiver Engagement: The Secret to Increasing Grateful Patient Referrals Are your physicians/caregivers hesitant to send you names of potential donors or to work collaboratively with you to increase donations? If the answer is yes, then you don’t want to miss this discussion. Many opportunities are lost simply because caregivers are unable to identify grateful patients. Or, worse yet, they may recognize that the patient wants to give back but worry about how connecting the patient with the development staff will impact their own relationship with the patient. In this session, you’ll be given easy-to-implement strategies that will result in more caregivers making grateful patient referrals and an appreciation for the efforts of the development staff. Gail D. Rudolph, CFRE Senior Director Philanthropy Institute Cleveland Clinic Cleveland, OH Physician Co-Presenter TBA

Shaping the Strategic Board Many development organizations have used countless tactics and tools in an empty attempt to spur the meaningful participation of their boards in advancing health care philanthropy. This session seeks to take a step back to look at boards from a new, strategic vantage point. The session asks tough questions and explores specific issues and obstacles that hinder board performance. Subsequently, the session moves into identifying specific and actionable levers to reverse or refine your board's engagement and performance.

The Chief Development Officer – What are the Right Leadership Competencies for Today and Tomorrow? Lessons from a Start-Up: What Health Care Philanthropy Can Learn from Silicon Valley

The Art & Science of MOVES: Using Metrics to Increase Results

Innovation. Solutions. Technology. Nimbleness. Discovering new patterns and connections across platforms. Faster pace. The above are Silicon Valley attributes that have changed how business happens and, along the way, how we live our lives. High net worth donors are seeking these things, too. Are you meeting them where they are? Learn how to think like a start-up and in doing so optimize philanthropy. Health care is at the crossroads of science, technology, healing: a fulcrum for giving!

Fundraising is about relationships – you can’t get the gift without the art of the relationship. However, used and analyzed properly, metrics are an invaluable tool in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of your program and making changes needed to increase results. This is the story of one foundation’s successful metrics journey.

Patty Franson Director of Philanthropy, Major Gifts Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation Sioux Falls, SD

Jan W. Wood President and Chief Development Officer Anne Arundel Medical Center Foundation Annapolis, MD

Building a Culture of Philanthropy – Strategies for Success For the modern-day hospital to be truly successful and effective, it must build a culture of philanthropy, if it doesn’t already exist. This means that everyone in the organization understands the crucial role that philanthropy plays in their future, including the roles of the Board, the CEO and the leadership team; the role of marketing in building a positive culture; using special events to help cultivate and secure major gifts; and engaging hospital staff for success. Opportunities for sharing insights and discussing practical applications of concepts presented will be plentiful through roundtable discussions throughout the session.

The Role of the CDO – How to Become the Most Important Employee in Your Organization

From Episodic to Sustainable: The Power of a Comprehensive Capital Campaign to Transform

With rapid changes occurring in the health care marketplace, the role of the CDO and development/ foundation office has gained significant new responsibility and now are even more critically important to the future of our organizations. Most health care providers are expecting razor thin operating margins and further stress on the ability to fund debt-service for future expansion. This session will examine how you can best position your team for this increased responsibility with your board, CEO, executive peers, physicians, donors and community. Ultimately, you could be the most important employee in your organization.

Shifting focus from event-based fundraising can be challenging, especially for small shops. However, the right approach to a comprehensive campaign can have transformational results on the patient care side and on the culture of philanthropy for your organization. A strategic approach to your campaign can broaden awareness about your organizations impact, raise significant funds, identify new donors and empower volunteers at unprecedented levels, while strengthening the foundation short-, mid- and long-term.
