PATRICK DE BROCK Artist at the fair Ethan Cook (b. 1983, Texas) Lives and works in New York
Using stock colours in pre-dyed cotton, Ethan Cook weaves the cotton into canvas on a four-harness floor loom. The woven canvas is then sewn together, generally creating colourfield-like abstractions. Cook’s most recent Band works use space more sculpturally, implying mass and gravity, creating spatial depth and perspective. The Bands are the most laid-bare way of presenting the canvas: widths are determined by the parameters of the loom and the bands are simply stacked without extra sewing, cutting or compositional concerns. With the Bands, colour becomes paramount, as the composition has been paired down so far. Recent solo exhibitions were held at T293, Rome (2019), Gana Art, Seoul (2018), Patrick De Brock Gallery, Knokke (2018) and Anat Ebgi, Los Angeles (2018).
