PRESENTING THE SETTING
Bybanks Kentucky is a place where you can be free, not worrying about the danger of any kind. Bybanks is a beautiful place that is also full of wonder and mysteries; a place where miraculously trees can sing. Where Sal used to live before moving to Euclid Ohio.
Euclid Ohio is a place where compared to Bybanks is pretty boring. Instead of nature surrounding you, there's only cement and wooden fences. Where instead of letting you free you're surrounded inside a box. This is Sal’s new home where she met her friends, lover, and neighbors.
Old Faithful In Wyoming is a special place for Gram, it is where Gram wanted to go her whole life, and just before she died her dream came true. One of the places Sal visited in her journey. The last best thing that Gram saw before dying at the hospital was her life’s dream.
Coeur d’Alene is a special place for both Sal, Gramps, and Grams. This is because in a hospital located in Coeur d’Alene Gram died. Since Gram is Gramps wife he is sad and that place is her place of death so it’s important. Sal because Gram was someone whom Sal loved. Lewiston Idaho is where Sal’s mother Chanhassen lies dead in the cemetery in Lewiston by the snake river. This is where Sal was taken by the police officers, where the maple tree grows above the grave and where willows sing.
SUMMARY Salamander Tree Hiddle is the narrator for this novel, she is a thirteen-year-old girl that is full of vim and vigor; according to her grandparents she is a “country girl at heart”. She is from Bybanks Kentucky, near the Ohio River. But after her Mother, Chanhassen left, her father, Dad Hiddle decided to move to the town of Euclid, in Ohio. Sal’s dad had to leave the farm in Bybanks because, after Chanhassen was gone, Sal’s dad was haunted by thoughts of her, and just couldn’t support it anymore. Sal had to give up many things behind in Bybanks. When Sal first arrived at Euclid, she didn’t like it because there were no trees, swimming holes, and free space, in which you could run around in. sal wasn’t used to be jammed in a house with grey cement sidewalks, no trees, no pigs, and no nature. In Euclid, since there were fences around her backyard, she felt like if she were trapped in a box. This is when Margaret cadaver comes in;
Margaret Cadaver is a married woman who lost her husband in a car crash. But Sal doesn’t know this, so she assumes that Mrs. Cadaver is a really mean, scary person. So she doesn’t like Margaret, who’s hair color is red, another reason that Sal doesn’t like her is that her last name is Cadaver, and Cadaver means corpse or a dead body. This is
makes her first
appearance. Phoebe is a shy girl that lives next door, Sal and Phoebe later become best friends. A few days after moving to Euclid, Sal starts to go to school, in school, everyone sees her in a strange way, and the girls are fascinated at Sal’s appearance. There she meets Mary Lou Finney, Megan, Christy, Beth Ahn, Alex, Ben Finney, Phoebe, and Mr. Birkway. Ben will later fall in love with Sal and become lovers. Phoebe tells Sal that she is brave. Afterschool, Phoebe invites Sal to her house for dinner, Phoebe also adds that her mother is going to bake a blackberry pie; this reminds Sal about her mother who loved blackberries. On the way to Phoebe’s house, Sal meets Mrs. Partridge who touches her face. At Phoebe’s house, the girls start talking about the people in their neighborhood, and how strange they are. They talk about how Mrs. Partridge touches faces because she’s blind, and Mrs. 9
Cadaver how she seems to be killing people and burying them in her garden. After some time, Sal’s grandparents come to Euclid and take Sal on a road trip. The purpose of this road trip was to find her mother and visit her and take the same route that she took to go to Idaho. Even though Sal wasn’t excited to go she knew she had to. During this trip, Sal starts to tell her grandparents
story; but meanwhile telling this story she finds out that her story is related to Phoebe’s, and that it is hidden from the outside. Sal starts to tell the story and Gram and Gramps keep trying to interrupt but continuing on the story. After eating in Phoebe’s house for a few days, Sal notices
Winterbottom like a slave more than a mother. They treat her as if she is only supposed to clean, make food, bake for the Winterbottoms. Phoebe asks Sal for a sleepover and the next morning they wake up and
find a note on the front porch, this note contains a message that neither Phoebe or Sal know what it means. Every single day after that morning a secret messenger left a note on the front porch; even though Sal and Phoebe don’t know who it is Mrs. Partridge even though she is blind was the one putting those notes on Phoebe's front porch. With Gram, Gramps, and Sal they go on the same route that leads us to Idaho. They were taking the same route that her mother took about 1 year ago. They visit Chicago Illinois, Madison Wisconsin, The Wisconsin Dells, Pipestone National Monument Minnesota, The Missouri River in South Dakota, The Badlands and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, Old Faithful in Wyoming, Coeur d'Alene in Idaho, Lewiston in Idaho. During this journey, Sal just feels like if she's racing to get to Idaho, Sal feels like this because of the urge that she has to arrive in Idaho before her mother's birthday. In Phoebe’s story, Sal and Phoebe go to Mary Lou’s house, where so many crazy things were happening and happened. As soon as they get there the house is already crazy, and Ben draws a picture of Sal; she asks him what it means and after telling Sal the meaning. Sal slips and Ben catches her, and “accidentally” kisses 12
her collarbone; there’s a moment of suspense and Sal leaves the room. Sal is afraid of buses and cars, so during the road trip, she prays to the trees that she wouldn't be in an accident. They have finally reached South Dakota, where all of them decide to take a dip in the river; when suddenly a guy named Tom Fleet appears with a gun and threatens them saying that the river is private property. While Gramps and Tom Fleet argue, a water moccasin (snake) bites Gram. In Phoebe’s house, a man is coming by asking for Mrs. Winterbottom every night; this man is Mike, Mike the lunatic. In Phoebe’s house, after Phoebe came back from school. Mrs. Winterbottom left her house, leaving only a single note and some food in the fridge. Phoebe thinks that the Lunatic who visited her house a few nights ago kidnapped her mother. Sal helps Phoebe look for her mother, which reminds Sal of her when her mother suddenly left her, and she did nothing to try to find her. As soon as gram screamed Gramps and Tom took her out of the water, and the top started to suck the venom out, after taking much of the venom out Gramps, Tom, and Sal go to the nearest hospital, where she gets better; but after the snake bite Gram was never the same again. Even
though Gram does see Old Faithful the place where she wanted to visit her whole life. After searching for Mrs. Winterbottom, Phoebe decides to go to the police station to look for her mother. Inside she talks with an officer that has a picture with the lunatic on his desk. Because of Phoebe’s curiosity, she asks the officer if the lunatic is his son, the officer nods and tells them his name, Mike. After some research about Mike, they find out where his college was; and decide to go, Ben also decides to go. After going to Old Faithful, they were heading to Coeur d’ Alene when Gram has a stroke. Gramps takes Gram to the hospital, where she dies after a few days of medications. Gramps ends up giving Sal the driving keys and Sal drives off toward a winding road in Lewiston. At the top of Lewiston Hill, she stops and gets off to look at the view. As soon as she’s about to get in the car, she encounters another car. A man steps out and asks where her family is Sal just responded that they were close and nearby. While Sal and Phoebe go toward the university, Ben goes to the hospital.
Phoebe and Sal look on campus and inside the dorms to ask for Mike; as soon as they were about to give up they see Mrs. Winterbottom sitting on a bench with Miek. Then Mike kisses Mrs. Winterbottom on the cheek, Phoebe keeps watching while Sal runs away toward the bus stop. But she quickly passes the bus stop and goes into the hospital, where she sees Ben. The man starts walking toward the edge off the cliff and points at a bus wreck gleaming in the moonlight. Telling Sal that a year ago a bus went off the road here, sliding into the overlook, and through the railing and rolled over and over into the trees. There was only one survivor from the crash, Sal later finds out that, the survivor is Mrs. Cadaver. Sal sees Ben with a woman in the hospital when she gets closer to Ben to see’s her and signals to wait. After leaving the woman in a room he went to talk to Sal, telling her that, the woman in hospital clothes was his mother. Sal gets to meet Ben’s mother and after meeting her, Ben and Sal kissed. Meanwhile, all of this drama was happening Sal and Ben were dating and had grown affection for one another. After the kiss, they go back to the bus station where Phoebe is waiting. Sal decides to observe the bus wreck a little closer when police officers pull
up. The police officers scold sal because of observing the bus a little closer; then they asked about sal’s family and how she came here. Sal just tells them the truth about her driving. They ask Sal to get in their car, they drive Sal toward a graveyard near Snake River, where under a maple tree the Name, Chanhassen was written. Eventually, Phoebe's mother came back with Mike the Lunatic, and a whole new style of clothing and mood, and when her whole family asks her questions she responds them one by one, she starts to explain everything. It turns out that Mike is her son that she gave up for adoption. In the end, everything worked out and Phoebe's family came back together. After seeing the name carved on the stone she knew that her mother was really never coming back. After seeing the grave and getting back to Coeur d’Alene, Sal returns to Bybanks were she goes over the things that her mother had given her. Phoebe, Ben, Mrs. Cadaver, Mrs. Partridge, andMr. Birkway was possibly going to come to visit next month in August. Sal says that the trees sing and she has a chicken, Gramps has a beagle it was just the way it was before.
PERSONAL COMMENTS This book is really deep, it talks about deep topics that are not usually spoken about. The topics that this book focuses on making this novel what it is; this means that, because it talks about these topics this book becomes more interesting, and makes you want to read more. In my opinion, I really enjoyed this novel, I liked that it was narrated in a character's point of view; also that it tells us how that character feels when a change in its environment happens. It also makes the narrator character’s life a kind of normal life even though the character is going through tough or hard times. The deep topics did make the novel harder to understand and kind of makes the environment kind of moody.
includes objects that are sometimes not related to what is happening, such as the main character talking about her house, or her mother in like a not appropriate moment. Meanwhile reading this book you also feel a little sad or depressed, since Sal loses someone, and isn’t usually in a good mood. You sometimes know how she’s feeling and think about
your experience. I didn’t like the topic selection. I would change some characters and the topic. The characters because the novel revolves around a single character, which is Salamander. Even though she is the main character I think the author should’ve included the other characters such as Ben or the Lunatic more. The topic because I would make the topics change a lot since the novel isn’t that bright I would add some humor to lighten the mood. If I were a character, I would be Salamander Tree Hiddle. I would be Sal because I would like to feel how she feels during all of this commotion. If I were her I would also try doing my actions a little differently. Lastly, a possible end or finish for this novel, in my opinion, would be that Sal’s mother doesn’t die and it is another person that dies but is mistaken by her mother. Also that in the end, her family and Phoebe are living in the same neighborhood, and that they lead a happy life. I would end it in a happily ever after.
