Fun facts

Træskohage Lighthouse is so photogenic that it should be given its own Instagram profile.
The River Gudenå is Denmark’s only river. Its source is in Tinnet Krat near Tørring and stretches for 160 km through Jutland. The stretch between Tørring and Klostermølle is like a rain forest and the closest we have to a piece of the Amazon in Denmark.
There are no cars on Tunø and it was named Island of the Year 2024-25.

At Horsens Prison Museum, you can witness the incredible story of escape artist Lorentzen, who dug an 18-metre long tunnel to freedom. It’s rumoured that the achievement inspired the Hollywood film “The Shawshank Redemption”.
The East Jutland Archipelago consists of 5 islands, 5 ferries, thousands of wild rabbits, hiking trails, Viking stories and a cup for each port

Don’t worry about losing your way in Kystlandet, as we have more than 500 kilometres of signposted hiking trails

Kystlandet is bound together by 266 km of coastline, so the name Kystlandet – Coastal land –didn’t just come from nowhere.

The famous explorer, Vitus Bering, comes from Horsens. In the 18th century, Bering led the largest expedition in world history. Along the way, he became a national hero in Russia and had an entire sea named after him – as well as a strait, a glacier, an island, and not least Vitus Bering Parken in Horsens.
Kystlandet is home to Denmark’s only waterslide with a lift
The slide can be found in the Vandhalla water complex in Hou.
A part of the legendary frigate HDMS Jylland is located in Juelsminde. Here, you can find a lost anchor from the period (1912–1925) when HDMS Jylland was docked in Juelsminde. The lost anchor now stands as a monument at the harbour.
Denmark’s oldest minigolf course can be found at Saksild Beach.

The Hjarnø Ferry between Snaptun and Hjarnø has stayed afloat since 1987, and although the route is not that long, the little ferryboat has sailed the equivalent of approx. 14 times around the world.

Horsens City of Culture
HORSENS IS A CITY OF CONTRASTS A GUIDE FOR FAMILIES, FRIENDS, AND
LOVERS

A FJORD CITY WITH PULSE, CHARM AND STORIES
HORSENS IS NOT THE SAME FOR EVERYONE
For some, the city is the embodiment of culture, for others, it is art. For some, architecture, for others, nature. Some think about history, others see innovation. One thing is for certain though – Horsens is something for everyone. Due to its past as an old prison and industrial city, Horsens has succeeded in creating a city full of the past and future, because here you will find an atmosphere that provides room for both of these and everything in between.
On the pedestrian street, you’ll find the shopping centre Bytorv Horsens, and in the side streets you’ll find small shops with handicrafts and local goods. You can stay overnight in stately surroundings at Comwell Bygholm Park and Jørgensens Hotel, or in a more low-key environment at Horsens City Camping and Four Points Flex by Sheraton Horsens.
You’ll encounter art both at street level with street art and the Boulevard of Sculptures, and in gilded frames at Horsens Art Museum. The Industrial Museum shows you the past as it really was, while Horsens & Friends and Horsens Ny Teater provides contemporary entertainment. At Horsens Prison Museum you end up behind bars, and in the city’s surrounding nature, you are free.
Welcome to Horsens – a city of contrasts.

MUSEUMS AT REDUCED PRICES
A museum pass will give you access to Horsens Prison Museum, the Industrial Museum, Horsens Art Museum and Horsens Museum for seven days, and includes two cups of coffee/tea in the price.

MY HORSENS
HORSENS ACCORDING TO JEANETTE VARBERG
Archaeologist and author Jeanette Varberg has won several awards for her ability to bring history to life for a wide audience. Jeanette has lived in Horsens since 2010.
What
makes Horsens special?
Horsens is the coolest place we’ve ever lived. We moved here without knowing much about it and were completely blown away. First of all, by the magnificent nature, which for us is right outside our front door with both forest and, not least, Horsens Fjord. At the same time, we have the city with all its offerings. It’s the perfect combination. In Horsens I became a grown up, and this is where we’re staying.
What are your greatest experiences in Horsens?
It comes back to nature again. I’m a cold-water swimmer, and a couple of years ago I went swimming in minus 20 degrees. It was a clear and completely calm morning, and we had to break a hole in the ice to get in. It was magical. In addition, my regular runs and bike rides in the nature north of the fjord are always an experience. Suddenly there’s a sea eagle above your head or seals resting on the shoreline. I also want to highlight the concert with The Weeknd in 2023. That was huge. It’s amazing to just get on your bike and roll into the city to experience a world-class name of that calibre.
What do you always recommend to visitors in Horsens?
The bike trip around Horsens Fjord. Our children are now old enough to cycle, and we’ve done the whole trip with the bike ferry from Alrø and an overnight stay on Hjarnø. Again, it’s an example of what the surrounding countryside can offer, and the adventure begins as soon as you leave the city. As a history nerd, I naturally also recommend paying attention to the many traces history has left in the landscape. In Stensballe, for example, there are burial mounds from the Bronze Age, stone dolmens from the Stone Age, and remains of an old medieval castle.

The next day, you can go for a great breakfast at Spisekammeret before moving on to Horsens Prison Museum, where you can spend hours on activities and stories about life behind bars or take part in one of the many events the place is known for. A perfect way to round off the tour is to visit the wonderful playground known as The Great Escape
the family
Horsens is also for kids, and it’s a good idea to start with ‘Horsens Treasure Hunt’, where you explore the city on a 5.5-kilometre walking route and answer questions along the way. Before starting the hunt, you can stock up in the many shops and cafés in Bytorv Horsens. Halfway along the route you will find the Industrial Museum, where you can play your way through industrialisation and see the workers dwellings, which depict the daily humdrum

For friends
Start your visit by unwinding as you go for a stroll along the Boulevard of Sculptures (Skulpturalléen). Walk 3 km from the train station along Denmark’s widest pedestrian street (take a look in Aage Würtz Keramik or one of the other numerous speciality shops in town) until you reach Langelinie, where you can go for a swim or take a walk by the water.
After the long walk, you can satisfy your hunger by having lunch at Café Ella in Horsens Art Museum. The café serves sandwiches salads and open-faced sandwiches, as well as a double prize-winning steak sandwich.
While waiting for your food, you can check out what’s on at Horsens Ny Teater. Maybe there’s something you’d like to see while you’re in town?

After you’ve eaten, you can visit Horsens Prison Museum, where you can, e.g. experience ”the biker wing” and escape artist Lorentzen’s spectacular escape tunnel. Remember to check Horsens Prison Museum’s calendar for exciting events when planning your visit.
You can then go down to Bytorv Horsens where you will be enticed by good deals, before moving on to Jørgensens Hotel, which is a historic boutique hotel where you can both eat and sleep. The hotel includes soft sofas in the lounge area, full glasses at the wine bar and critically acclaimed food at Restaurant Eydes
You can finish off your stay the next day by going to the town’s Latin Quarter for a brunch at Café Gran. Being here is almost like being at home - only with great service and food that you don’t have to make yourself.

For lovers

Horsens invites you to walk in its charming streets where you can seek out handicrafts and exciting architecture, or simply amble along, look at people and, perhaps, stop and enjoy the numerous street artworks, which decorate the gables around town. This is a good place to begin your stay and let peace fall upon you.
Once your pulse is in zen mode, you might be ready for a visit to Horsens Art museum, which is also a great place for people new to the world of art. The museum includes Denmark’s largest collection of works by Michael Kvium (who was born and raised in Horsens).
It's hard to visit Horsens without stopping by Horsens Prison Museum, which is an iconic place full of stories. Be sure to check the calendar at the museum’s webpage, as there are often events, such as concerts, Design & Streetfood and Christmas at the Prison. Once you’ve been released and feel the hunger kick in, we recommend Nior Bistro Horsens, which is located on the dock in Horsens Marina. The bistro serves fish, burgers and classic dishes and looks out over the marina.
Afterwards, head for Comwell Bygholm Park and enjoy a stay at an old manor house. With its organic and local products, the large morning buffet concludes a delightful stay in Horsens. If you’re not quite ready to leave, you might be tempted by a scenic 7 km hike around the lake or a fun round of mini-golf in the park.
Before leaving Horsens, you could swing by Bytorv Horsens, which encompasses almost 30 shops and eateries and is an ideal place for bargain hunting and the last meal of the trip.

Bakkelandet
THE RIVER GUDENÅ FROM TINNET KRAT TO THE KATTEGAT
A DAY OUT IN BRÆDSTRUP BACK IN TIME AND UP TO THE HEIGHTS ON THE UNCOVERED BRIDGE

Town in the hills
Between Bakkelandet’s high peaks and forest lakes – and close to The Uncovered Bridge – lies Brædstrup. Driven by local enthusiasts and offering a surprising selection of exciting shops, good eateries, and nature areas close to the city centre it’s an ideal destination for a day trip. Here is our guide to a day in Brædstrup.
MORNING
Upon arrival, it’s important to sort out lunch, and you can do that at Slagter Laursen, which excels with a large selection of openfaced sandwiches, classic Danish smørrebrød, and delicious salads – all perfect to take with you for the rest of your trip in Brædstrup.
MIDDAY
In the centre of town you will find the green spaces of Brædstrup’s Public Park and Activity Park, which are fervently used by both locals and guests and provide small, peaceful oases for plenty of fun and games. For non-adults, the huge Tarzan course in the Activity Park is a must, and the gigantic troll, Jensnej, pieced together of recycled wood by Thomas Dambo, causes everyone’s jaw to drop.
END OF THE DAY
Brædstrup’s shopping street allows you to go from door to door in

& &

the numerous speciality shops in town. Heidi is ready to provide you with design tips in the interior shop Karmen.dk and just a few steps away is Fru Skov, a supplier of quality equipment for fine cuisine, including Japanese kitchen knives and French ceramics – a fresh cup of coffee can be enjoyed in the shop’s little café. Finish off the day with a glass of bubbly at the bar or on the roof terrace of Water of Life, Brædstrup’s local expert in whisky, spirits and wine.
EVENING
Eat at Restaurant Rummelig. Chef Kim has created a place where most of the vegetables are harvested on the day of serving. The changing seasons and creativity of the cook dictate the consistently delicious menu.
NIGHT TIME
Sleep at Hotel Pejsegården, located close to the beautiful scenery of Bakkelandet and particularly renowned for the revue "Pejserevyen", which is full of music, craziness and fun led by some of the country’s most talented entertainers. It’s also here that you can get your map for the popular ’Brædstrup Treasure Hunt’, which is a huge hit among young children.

You don’t have to go far to experience something great. A spring coming up from the earth in Tinnet Krat marks the start of the River Gudenå, which is Denmark’s only river. If you pay a visit to the southernmost part from Tørring to Klostermølle, you will experience water winding its way around small bends and trees reflected on the surface. The shallow water on the stretch offers a wealth of outdoor experiences, from bike trips to canoeing and, for those who can’t get enough: A night under the open sky.

Experience the old Benedictine monastery from the 16th century, which later became a paper mill. The drying barn in the mill is now Denmark’s longest wooden building and features relics of the past and a birdwatching tower with lookout post. You can also take one of the many paths from Klostermølle to Sukkertoppen, which is a 108 metre high hilltop with views to the Mossø and Salten Langsø lakes, as well as the woods and hills around Himmelbjerget.

Experience a piece of rediscovered Danish history when The Uncovered Bridge in Bakkelandet takes you up to the heights and back in time.
THE UNCOVERED BRIDGE

HOW TO FIND THE UNCOVERED BRIDGE
There is a large parking area around 300 metres from the bridge at Vestbirkvej 2A, Brædstrup. A path leading to the bridge can be found here. There is easy access for wheelchair users via an asphalt path from the parking area.
A steel grid bridge was built as part of the railway between Horsens and Bryrup in 1899, and the impressive structure was, in its day, the highest bridge in Scandinavia.
The new trains on the line were not made to fit the construction, which meant that the otherwise magnificent railway bridge became unusable. In short, it wasn’t viable to demolish or break up the bridge for scrap, so an alternative was put in place; the bridge was made into a dam and buried under several tons of sand. Hidden and forgotten.
WE FAST-FORWARD 85 YEARS
It wasn’t until 2014, when the aim was to create better conditions for fish life in the Gudenå, that the bridge was uncovered and restored. And it’s not only the fish that benefit - every year more than 100,000 people visit the beautiful red steel bridge. It’s also a very special experience to walk across the bridge, from where you have views of forest-clad hills and the murmuring waters of the River Gudenå.

Brandbygegaard
In the rural surroundings by Horsens Fjord lies Brandbygegaard , where Søren and Lone run their small farm entirely on nature’s own terms. When they’re not in the fields or busy with concerts and other events, things are in full swing in the couple’s distillery, where the farm’s apples, grapes, and herbs are transformed into juice, cider, wines, and spirits.

The year at Brandbygegaard
Spring
Preparing greenhouses and kitchen gardens, spreading compost and the small amount of animal manure provided by their few sheep, hens, and ducks. Sowing and planting vegetables and flowers, planting potatoes, and weeding — constantly. Everything depends on staying ahead!
Summer
Tying up and thinning the vineyards. Mowing open areas, composting clippings and other plant material, harvesting vegetables, fruit, and berries, preserving tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and more.
Autumn
The apple harvest stretches over 2–3 months because the varieties ripen over a long period. Grape harvest, pear and quince harvest in September/October. Fermentations of the fruit are started, monitored, and distilled. Some of the work moves indoors.
Winter
Pruning the apple orchard and vineyards — major tasks that take a long time. Producing and bottling juice, cider, sparkling wines, and spirits. Sowing selected vegetables, tomatoes, etc. begins in February to ensure a long harvest season for the kitchen.
Søren and Lone recommend
Groft
At Brandbygegaard we bake our own rye bread, wheat bread, etc., but when we want the best bread and cake in the country, we get it in Saksild, where Torben and Stine turn organic ingredients into world-class baked goods.

Troldgården

& LONE ON COUNTRY LIFE
For Søren and Lone – known locally as Søren Sørøver and Lone Landmand – sustainability, ecology, and regenerative farming are not empty buzzwords. When they use those words to describe their farm, they mean them wholeheartedly. On the farm, no artificial fertiliser, pesticides, or other chemicals are used, and most of the land has been converted to wild nature, where flora and fauna can unfold freely while carbon storage increases.
The remaining land is cultivated regeneratively and provides the couple with most of the ingredients they use for their popular “restaurant evenings” and the other events held on the farm throughout the year. The ambition of Brandbygegaard is to show guests that it is entirely possible to live and produce in harmony with nature — and that it doesn’t mean compromising on great flavour. Quite the opposite. When you visit the farm, you also have an open view of much of the production setup, because it is important to Søren and Lone to show where the ingredients come from and to create a fully sustainable experience. In the Brandbygegaard kitchen, plants take centre stage, supported by fish and meat sourced from suppliers who share the couple’s high standards.

One of the best ways to experience Kystlandet is on foot. Here is an overview of some of the area’s many hiking trails for long and short legs, day trips and trips with accommodation.

THE FJORDMINO
One of the Kystlandet’s longest — and perhaps most beautiful — routes is Fjordminoen
A 59 km hiking trail that takes you through forest, across water, out onto islands, and back to the mainland. Fit adults and young people can probably complete the route in two days, and if you have children or older hikers with you, we recommend setting aside four days.
SOUTHERN ROUTE
You can start your trip from wherever you want. A good place would be from Horsens Station and then onward to Bakkelunden, the new park area. Follow the trail signposted with red arrows, which will point you onward to Boller Forest. It's then time for a bit of village hopping from Brund over Bisholt and Glud to the cosy harbour town of Snaptun.

From Snaptun, the Hjarnø Ferry takes you to Hjarnø, which offers island idyll, Viking history, and one of Denmark’s smallest churches. The only way to continue on the route is also the cosiest: the small, charming bike ferry that carries you to Alrø. Here, the route follows the quiet country road, which leads you back to the mainland via the dam on the northern side.
NORTHERN ROUTE
The northern part of the Fjordmino snakes its way through a variety of nature, including Brakør Forest and Sondrup Hills. The trail finishes where it all started: in Horsens.

8 AROUND TUNØ
If you long for a real island atmosphere, take a trip to Tunø where you can take the 8 km hike around the island. The tour starts at the harbour, where you can decide whether you want to turn right or left (we recommend the latter). The trail along the south coast quickly reaches a distinctive high point in the form of the 20 m high Sønderklint – and a magnificent view of the Kattegat.

21 THE KANINO
KM
On Endelave, thousands of wild rabbits live freely, and the island is commonly known as The Rabbit Island (Kaninøen). So of course, the island’s hiking trail is called Kaninoen. The marked trail is 21 km long and takes you past several of the rabbits’ favourite habitats and through the island’s particularly rich nature, which is partly a result of their unrestricted roaming.
A GOOD TIP
The rabbits are best observed at dawn and dusk, so you may want to spend the night on Endelave to cherish this experience.
22KM
THE COASTAL PATH

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HIKE

Tips for nature enthusiats

A STAY IN NATURE
Vejle Fjord

The
From water’s edge to treetop, from whales to bird calls, from wellness to wilderness. Vejle Fjord can force the most ardent of city dwellers to stop, be enthralled by and explore the surrounding nature. Below are some highlights of what you can experience. Have a nice trip!
magical lighthouse
The 13-metre-high Træskohage Lighthouse - operational until 1986 - stands proudly amidst the landscape at Vejle Fjord. You can enjoy free access to the lighthouse, which has a view that must be seen to be believed. If you feel like staying a little longer, there’s a sandy beach at the foot of the lighthouse - so remember your picnic basket and bathing clothes!
360 degree view
Vejle Fjord was formed during the last Ice Age. You can therefore experience huge steep slopes such as those at Staksrode Forest. Here you will get a wonderful view and impression of Danish nature: from the endless views over the water (as far as Æbelø and Funen) to the profound sight of the wild and untamed natural forests.
Take a break from everyday life at Hotel Vejlefjord
A single day at the hotel will give you the feeling of being dressed in a robe spun from threads of well-being and indulgence. Lovely rooms, food and spa experiences that will make you forget the washing up, everyday grind and lunch boxes – and, if you need some fresh air, you can take a walk on the historic treatment paths and rest on one of the thinking benches.
Daugård Beach
The Blue Flag flies over the small sandy beach in its green surroundings. With its clean bathing water, Daugård Strand is perfect for a refreshing dip on a warm summer day — or an icy plunge in winter, if that’s your thing. There are toilets, good parking facilities, and for wheelchair users there is access to the water’s edge, ramps, parking, and the toilet building.
Pirate Castle
If you are curious about remains from the distant past, we recommend taking a walk on the yellow route in Staksrode Forest. If you cross the ancient moat via the little tree (tread carefully), you will arrive at the ruins of Stagsevold, a medieval castle from the 14th century. According to legend, the castle was a base for pirates who wreaked havoc and plundered in the strait of Little Belt.
Little treasures in Det Kreative Gartneri
You will find Det Kreative Gartneri (garden centre) in the village of Stouby. Here you can easily while away the hours by being inspired by handicrafts, enticed by retro finds, shopping for local specialities and buying some beautiful flowers to take home.

Hop in
the saddle
The nature in Kystlandet is for anyone who loves to hike, bike or ride in the wooded countryside or along the gentle waters of the east coast. On the following pages we have picked some of the most stunning routes for all lovers of nature.

NOIGER A L ROUTE33:SOURCEOFGUDENÅ
kilometres
This 44 km long cycle route starts at the source of the River Gudenå by the Great Danish Watershed. The route then follows the flow of the river northwards to the woods, lakes and hills of the Danish Lake District. This tour takes you close to nature and far away from the big towns and heavy traffic.
The Culture by Bike route is no less than 540 km and has 22 stages. We recommend the 3rd stage, where you can enjoy a ride from Odder down to Horsens Fjord near Gylling by following the blue signs.

Cycle routes
kilometres
The route follows National Cycle Route 5 from Vejle Fjord via Horsens Fjord to Norsminde Fjord. The 129 km route brings you close to urban life, rural idyll, and cosy harbour towns with good options for accommodation.
kilometres
The route leads you through Bakkelandet’s lush river valleys, ancient beech forests, and across The Uncovered Bridge. The nature trail follows the old railway line that winds through the landscape, and for long stretches the route is completely separated from other traffic — and practically as flat as a pancake. If you take the trip over several days, you can stay overnight at one of the many tent and shelter sites along the way or at Hotel Pejsegården in Brædstrup. If you’re craving something out of the ordinary, you can stop at Holmely, which offers accommodation in a tree-top shelter or a glamping tent.

AROUNDHORSENS FJORD –R87 52
kilometres
Get comfy in the saddle and enjoy the winding bike track along Horsens Fjord. If you are fast you can do the trip in one day. We recommend, however, to set two days aside. This will allow plenty of time for swimming, museum visits and lots of ice creams! Here are some ideas for a two-day trip:
DAY 1
34 KILOMETRES
It’s an obvious choice to start the trip in central Horsens. From here, you can ride along the north side of the fjord and continue across the dam to Alrø. Via the bike ferry you hit Hjarnø, where you can rent a cabin or a glamping tent at Hjarnø Camping.
DAY 2
18 KILOMETRES
Take the Hjarnø Ferry to Snaptun in the morning and cycle along the south side of the fjord all the way back to Horsens.
HOTELJUELSM
kilometres
DNARTS
The MTB trail in Tofteskoven Forest is a hot spot for all mountain bikers - both young and old. The trail comprises of a single, 5 km track with an official start at Hotel Juelsminde Strand.
GET AROUND EASILY ON TWO WHEELS
At Holmely, you can rent an electric bicycle for your trips around Kystlandet. If you need help to plan your tour, you can choose one of Holmely’s guided electric bicycle tours.

Mountain bike

BJERRE MTB TRACK 5
10 kilometres
If you like sharp turns and high speed, then stop by one of Denmark’s best mountain bike trails, which is situated in Bjerrelide between Horsens and Juelsminde. The blue trail is 10km long and offers 250 height meters, which is perfect for both novices and families with children. Experienced cyclists can head for the red or black tracks, which offer steep descents and 550 height meters.
TURRIDNING ENDELAVE
Turridning Endelave offers various guided tours depending on your riding experience, but what they all have in common is that they give you a different way to experience the island — and take you to places that regular visitors never get to see. Turridning Endelave also offers accommodation in a cosy holiday apartment.

On horseback
Experience Bakkelandet from the saddle of an Icelandic horse. The small family business, Fuglsang Rideture, offers guided tours in the hilly terrain, and Turriding Endelave allows you to see more of the island’s beautiful nature and experience places rarely visited on foot.
KIDS AND ADULTS, NOVICES AND SEASONED RIDERS
Experience is not a prerequisite for getting in the saddle. There are horses for riders at all levels, whether you need a calm, reliable buddy or a horse who’s up for a gallop. You can choose anything from short, half-hour rides to half and whole-day tours to, e.g. The Uncovered Bridge. Children can take a lead rain ride on one of the farm’s friendliest horse mules.

Enjoy a soothing day spa or a delicious lunch with a view of the fjord.

DENMARK’S AMAZON
THE RIVER GUDENÅ
The River Gudenå provides the water for many great experiences from short stretches to the long haul. Sometimes you will need to stay alert for the fast turns, other times you will have to carry your canoe over land. You are in for a treat with any one of our four recommended routes.
TØRRING-ÅSTEDBRO 15 KM
The trip starts off on a narrow, calm and shallow stretch of the river, and allows you to get acquainted with your canoe. You will subsequently head northbound and pass by Uldum Marsh, which is Denmark's largest non-tidal marsh, before continuing to “The End of the World” (don’t worry, this is not the end of the trip). Aale Teltplads is an ideal place to pitch up your tent before heading to Åstedbro, where you will need your strength to haul your canoe on land. The trip takes around 4.5 hours.

ÅSTEDBRO-VESTBIRK
12 KM
After departing from Åstedbro, you sail past open landscapes with forests and lakes, while the river is somewhat wider and deeper in several places. After 6 km you pass Gudenå Camping (with a kiosk and cafeteria), and immediately after the campsite you reach a winding, entertaining stretch. Later you arrive at Bredvad Mølle, considered one of the most beautiful sections along the Gudenå. From here you paddle across Bredvad Lake until the trip ends at Vestbirk Camping. If you feel like extending the nature experience, you can spend the night at the campsite in a cabin, a glamping tent, a rented wagon, or your own tent. The trip takes approximately 4 hours.
KLOSTERMØLLE

VESTBIRK
CAMPING-KLOSTERMØLLE 14 KM
The trip from Vestbirk Camping will take you through the beautiful Bredvad, Naldal and Vestbirk lakes. When you get to Vestbirk Hydropower Plant, you will need to carry your canoe over land until you reach the water again. The trip then continues to the charming Voervadsbro, where you can stop for lunch at the local canoe campsite. The final stretch is calm, and surrounded by beautiful woodland until you paddle around the forested hill known as Sukkertoppen (the sugar loaf) and arrive at Klostermølle, where the canoe is hauled back on land. The trip takes around 4.5 hours.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW
You may only paddle WITH the current on the southernmost part of the River Gudenå.

In the summer, all canoeists can use the designated stops to board the Gudenå Bus and be driven back to the starting point – free of charge.

Wild rabbits, Viking history and wilderness. Set your course for Hjarnø, Alrø, Endelave and Tunø if you're looking for green spaces.

Hjarnø – Full of Viking history
On Hjarnø, the fierce Viking Age isn’t just history — it’s alive and thriving. Among other things, you can experience Kalvestenene, which are 10 large ship settings from the period 850–950, rising proudly in the landscape. If you explore the nature, you’ll almost certainly spot other traces of a distant past, and if you pass the island’s church — Denmark’s second smallest — you’ll see that Viking history has made its mark here as well.
There is a ferry connection to Snaptun on the south side of Horsens Fjord. It’s a short five-minute trip, and the ferry sails back and forth more than 30 times a day.
The frequent departures make the island an obvious destination for a walk with friends or a family outing. In the summer season, you can also sail with the bike ferry from Alrø.

TREASURE HUNT ON ALL OF THE ISLANDS
Hjarnø, Endelave and Tunø feature small and large treasures, so let the hunt begin on one or more of these islands. You can get hold of the treasure maps at kystlandet.com, Kroen Endelave, Hjarnø Camping and at the Tunø ferry.

Endelave – The wildest nature
A hundred years ago, six rabbits were released on the island, and today the population of the soft, hopping creatures can reach as many as 15,000. That’s why Endelave is also known as Kaninøen (The Rabbit Island), and usually it doesn’t take long after you set foot on the island before the first long-eared local crosses your path.
If you follow the rabbit trail, you can hike the Kaninoen route, which offers a wealth of other wildlife, deciduous forest, large salt meadows, heathland and a miniature version of a tidal flat. The ferry to Endelave takes one hour, departing from Snaptun.

A clear recommendation is a walk around the island, which takes just a couple of hours. The distance is only eight kilometers. The island may be small, but the experiences are not. HOLIDAY ATMOSPHERE IN NORSMINDE, SAKSILD, HOU, AND ODDER A GUIDE TO GOOD PLACES TO EAT ON THE ODDER COAST

FOUR QUAINT TOWNS
by th e water and on land
The Odder Coast stretches from Norsminde over Saksild to Hou with Odder, as the region’s capital, a little further inland. Here is an overview of some of Denmark’s best beaches, camp sites, cottage gardens full of children’s laughter and atmospheric towns.

Saksild
THE LAND OF SUMMER
The shallow water tempts the kids to go for a swim, while Saksild Strand Camping entices the older youngsters to go further out on the water with paddle boards and kayaks. The whole family can compete in a game of mini-golf at Strandshoppen and Minigolfbanen Saxild (Denmark’s oldest course). You can re-energise with some goodies from Strandshoppen, lovely sourdough bread from GROFT bakery and a little of everything from Bagergården in Saksild.

HOLIDAY RESORT FOR WATER LOVERS
Hou is not only a ferry port with connections to Tunø and Samsø. The town in itself is worth a visit and offers, among other things, water games, an old fishing village and a 10 km hike along the coastal trail. The beach and harbour in Hou merge together as one, which makes it easy to take an ice cream down to the water’s edge. If the weather is bad, you can try out the 90 m slide, hot water pool and sauna at Vandhalla.

Norsminde
The little marina, relaxed pace and aroma of freshly fried fish cakes from Norsminde Fiskehus attracts many families to the town. You can unplug, go crab hunting and celebrate your catch with a cold ice cream, while listening to the relaxing sound of waves and sails beating against the masts of the yachts.

Odder
SHOPPING AND HOLIDAY ATMOSPHERE
Odder is the main town of the Odder Coast and the city is perfect if you are looking for shopping and urban atmosphere during your stay at the coast.
If you’re travelling with children, explore the town through ‘Odder Treasure Hunt’, catch a movie at Biffen, or visit Økologiens Have, which is Denmark’s largest organic visitor garden. If you’re ready to be active (and compete a little), head for the Kuglen og Keglen, which guarantees hours of fun and high energy. If you prefer outdoor activity, you can swing your clubs at Odder Golfklub
Explore Odder Museum, located in a lovely green oasis around the mill pond and the old water and steam mill, in the middle of town. Experience the journey of grain through the mill, which stands just as it did when it closed in 1955. Dive into the local history in the museum’s exhibitions and enjoy a cup of coffee in the cosy café. In the museum shop, you’ll find beautiful gift items and local handicrafts.

THE GREAT DAY ON THE BEACH
The coasts of Kystlandet are a mecca for water lovers and landlubbers alike. The calm and shallow waters makes it the ideal choice for a beach holiday with children and there are plenty of beaches to choose from. Here are four of the beaches we return to again and again.
Calm wa ter and fne-grained sand
SAKSILD BEACH
A small, cosy beach oasis beckons on the Odder Coast. Saksild Beach is simply really nice and safe, especially because during the summer months a watchful eye is kept on all bathers from the lifeguard tower. So give the kids plenty of factor 40 and set aside the day for splashing, playing and enormous ice creams. Tip: You can rent paddle boards and kayaks from Strandshoppen and Saksild Strand Camping.
Clo s e to the city and water
HUSODDE BEACH, HORSENS
If you and your family need a change from Horsens' city life, you don't have to look far, because Husodde Beach is close to the centre. When it's time for a break from sand and water, you'll find both delicious ice cream and a fun miniature golf course at Horsens City Camping, which is located next to the beach.
Coastline as far as the eye c
STORSTRANDEN, JUELSMINDE
Juelsminde = beach holidays and a 5 km long coastline. Here you will find, among other things, Storstranden, where the stone walls are not only breakwaters, but also a perfect spot for crab hunters. You can jump into the blue waves from the 66 m long bathing jetty, and restaurants, a playground, a miniature golf course, and an ice cream shop are all within walking distance.

HOU BEACH
Hou Beach buzzes with life and the smell of summer, It’s located in perfect continuation of the city's cosy harbour. The little ones can play by the water's edge, and the slightly older ones can jump into the sea from the jetty. Safety is top notch, as is what’s served at KØST Deli & Gastropub at the harbour.

ODDER
FOLKEPARKEN'S PLAYGROUND
Odder is a city full of history, as is Folkeparken's Playground. Here, the kids can play in the old-fashioned mill, where they can grind sand to flour and sell it in the local bread shop.
THE PLAYGROUND IN MØLLEPARKEN
A lovely playground with classic playground equipment that most parents remember from their own childhood: tire swings, a playhouse, seesaw and slide.

HORSENS
THE INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM PLAYGROUND
There is an eight-metre-tall play tower in the shape of a gas tank that is ripe for exploring, and an obstacle course that simply must be tried. The Industrial Museum Playground injects life into the city’s history. There are things to do for both the older and younger kids, e.g. the wonderful Nimbus motorbikes on springs, playhouse and nest swings.
THE GREAT ESCAPE PLAYGROUND AT HORSENS PRISON MUSEUM
Escaping from prison is not for the faint of heart, it’s for the kids! The kids of the family can take a trip through the secret escape routes and jungle net, scamper up the steep climbing wall and whiz down the sharp bends of the slide.
BAKKELUNDEN
What do you do with a disused rubbish dump? You turn it into a brilliant nature playground with climbing walls, seesaws, play tower, suspension bridge, lunchbox house and much more.
PLAYGROUNDS IN BYGHOLM PARK
The jungle drums invite you to Bygholm Park, where children and the young at heart can try out the 200-meter-long jungle course. Bygholm Park has a second playground close to the parking area, which includes a zip line for lovers of speed, as well as table tennis and pétanque for multi-player games.
CAROLINE AMALIE LUND PLAYGROUND
A small, charming playground, especially for the littlest ones. It includes a climbing frame, slide, swings and a sandpit, where apparently you can make the best sand cakes in town.

JUELSMINDE
JUELSMINDE NATURE PLAYPARK
What rhymes with “play all day”? That would be Juelsminde Nature Playpark, which offers a huge sledding hill, an 8-metre climbing tower, a zipline, carousel, ball courts, a Tarzan course, the play ship Julle, trampolines, a skate arena, and much, much more.
THE PLAYGROUND AT JUELSMINDE HARBOUR
Take a trip out to sea on dry land. This cosy playground at Juelsminde Harbour includes a climbing tower with slide, walkways and climbing course.

ON LAND, ON WATER AND IN PRISON
Rainy weather is museum weather, and some of these rainy days are particularly suitable for a family visit to The Prison Museum, The Industrial Museum, Horsens Art Museum, Horsens Museum and Glud Museum. All of the above have activities that are tailor-made for kids – especially during the school holidays.
COOL CREATIVITY AND FULL-ON ACTION
Check the programme at Kulturstationen in central Horsens, where workshops and activities for children are often on the menu.
At Kuglen & Keglen in Odder, kids can beat their parents at everything from bowling and air hockey to escape rooms, and if they still have energy left, the family can compete in mini golf or go wild in the bouncy castles outside.

FOR WATER LOVERS AND OTHER ACTIVE TYPES
At Hedensted Centret, you can get your pulse up with sports courts, a padel centre, a fitness centre, a swimming pool, a gymnastics hall with trampolines and foam pits — and afterwards you can enjoy a cold refreshment in the café. If you want even more water, stop by Aqua Forum in Horsens or Vandhalla in Hou, both offering water slides, warm-water pools, a sauna, and a steam bath.
CHILDREN'S LIBRARY
Kystlandet is teeming with indoor cultural activities, and many of them can be found at the Libraries of Horsens Municipality. Here you will find fun and games for the little ones, and immersion for those a little older. Creativity can be unleashed on creative days, there are mini concerts where you can let yourself go and Legeteket invites you to let your imagination run wild. The Libraries of Horsens Municipality are located in Horsens, Brædstrup, Gedved, Hovedgård, Østbirk, Søvind and Endelave, and you may want to check horsensbibliotek.dk to see what’s happening near you.

HISTORIC HORSENS HANDICRAFTS AND GALLERIES ON A ROAD TRIP IN KYSTLANDET

HISTORIC
THE PRISON MUSEUM

FROM PRISON TO CULTURAL LIGHTHOUSE
High above Horsens sits FÆNGSLET, which is the city's best known landmark. It’s a building with a long and interesting history that began in 1853 when Horsens State Penitentiary was brought into use. At the time, 500 men were under lock and key and the atmosphere would probably have sent shivers down the spine of most people. The last prisoner was released in 2006 and the doors to Horsens Prison Museum were opened in 2012. It soon became a cultural centre full of wonderful tales of everything that happened behind the barbed wire and high walls.
EUROPE'S LARGEST PRISON MUSEUM
You can learn more about life behind bars at the award-winning The Prison Museum Among other things, you can hear the story of escape artist Lorentzen, who dug an 18-metre long tunnel to freedom in 1949. You can also go on a guided tour with a prison warden, who will tell you about the spectacular history of the prison. Check The FÆNGSLET's calendar, which often includes concerts, events and other exciting events.
A NIGHT BEHIND BARS
You can book your very own cell with up to four beds at SleepIn FÆNGSLET
Here you will experience authentic bars on the windows, a call radio and a WC in the hallway (which you can use without waiting for the warden to let you out of the cell).
INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM
A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME IN THE HISTORY OF INDUSTRY
At The Industrial Museum, the story of industrialisation unfolds so vividly that it almost feels as if you were there yourself. Explore the old textile factory from the 1920s, sit at school desks as they looked in the 1930s, 50s, and 80s, and in the machine hall you can feel the heat from the steam engines.
AN INVITATION INTO THE HOME
The museum invites you to step into a wide array of time pockets in the old Workers’ Homes. Here you can browse through the newspapers of the time, listen to old radio programmes and play vinyl records while you move through time in the dwellings from 1883, 1924, 1932, 1955, 1975 and 2000. Along the way, you will experience the increasing prosperity from the poor standards of the 1880s until the year 2000, when a Bosnian family had settled into the new surroundings with the associated modern comforts.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW EVEN MORE
There are thousands of historical objects and archaeological finds on display at Horsens Museum. The museum is a veritable treasure trove for gaining more knowledge abut the history of Horsens. Among other things, you can hear about son of the city, Vitus Bering, who travelled the world in search of discovery. With the help of 10,000 men, he was behind the largest expedition in history, became a national hero in Russia and had a sea named after him.

R O A D T R I P
The best way to understand yourself is to understand all that once was. We would therefore like to invite you on a trip back in time. A trip that, among other things, features the world’s largest collection of Ferguson tractors, charming rural tranquillity and a prison, which was once home to murderers and thieves.
11 4 KM – 15 MIN

JUELSMINDE HARBOUR MUSEUM 1
1ST STOP
Learn more about life as it unfolded at sea and in the little fishing town of Juelsminde, which developed in tandem with the first railway and subsequent ferry link to Kalundborg coming to town. The railway is now just a thing of the past, but the town and marina continue to be vibrant meeting places for the locals and guests who visit this charming holiday resort.
The museum will provide you with an explanation for why there is an anchor from the frigate HDMS Jylland in the harbour, and you can devote all your efforts into being the captain of your own ship in the museum's ship simulator, which will make you feel as though you are virtually on board one of the ships moored in the harbour just outside the door.
2ND STOP
DENMARK’S FERGUSON MUSEUM
The world’s largest collection of Ferguson tractors is located in Kystlandet, more specifically at Denmark’s Ferguson Museum in Stourup. The 250 tractors paint a really nice picture of the developments in Danish agriculture from the 1910s until the 1970s. Aside from the machines, there is a wealth of rural tranquillity, and you are welcome to bring your picnic basket and sit under the trees or in the old timber-framed barn.

3RD STOP GLUD MUSEUM
350 years of rural history. Glud Museum is an open-air museum that invites you into the old parlours, kitchens and stables in timber-framed buildings, fishermen’s huts and homesteads. The fragrant kitchen gardens outside are in full bloom during summer and the museum keeps the age-old Yule traditions alive when it invites you to the town’s Christmas celebrations. On Animal Day, old breeds of domestic animals take over the museum and you can enjoy produce from the fields and gardens of the area on harvest and market days during late summer.
5TH STOP
ULDUM MILL MUSEUM
The flour in this enormous mill from 1895 is still ground using the same traditional methods that have been practiced for centuries. You can learn more about this noble craftsmanship when you get to see the flour being milled on the old machinery at close range. You can even go right into the engine room and see the mill's huge grinders and, if you're up for even more, take a walk on the external balcony and see the 23 m long blades. Uldum Mill is an example of history that once was – and still is.

6TH STOP HJORTSVANG MUSEUM
The provincial way of life is in full bloom at Hjortsvang Museum, where you can walk around in a world of small rural communities from the 18th to 20th centuries. You can, e.g. experience the smithy from 1750, Family Markussen’s farmhouse as it looked in the 1950s and Linnerup Parish Co-op from 1908. You can even pick up a hammer and enhance your knowledge of the classic, age-old trades. The museum’s gardens, with their wild flowers and fragrance of aromatic herbs, are also worth a visit.

4TH STOP
BJERRE PRISON
The old jailhouse stands out in the small village of Bjerre. The jail was built in 1846, and this is where the town’s troublemakers were locked up while they awaited their punishment. During World War II, Danish resistance fighters sat behind its bars, and in 1956 the last prisoner left his cell. The raw walls remain just as they were back then.
7TH STOP
THE MONASTERY MILL (KLOSTERMØLLE)
Surrounded by beautiful nature, Klostermølle lies at the bottom of the Sugar Loaf (Sukkertoppen) and just next to Lake Mossø with the River Gudenå rushing past. The mill dates all the way back to the Middle Ages and was originally a Benedictine monastery. In 1872, the mill was converted to a saw mill, and later a paper mill. You can both feel the history in the old buildings, as well as read about it on the museum labels. The old drying barn is Denmark’s largest wooden building, and you can still see how the cardboard and paper were hung up to dry here. You can also enjoy the view of Lake Mossø from the birdwatching tower in the same building.

8TH STOP
ODDER MUSEUM
Odder Museum is beautifully situated in a historic area and green oasis around the mill pond and the old water and steam mill. Explore the journey of grain through the authentic mill, which stands exactly as it did when it closed in 1955. The journey begins in the grain loft and continues through three floors filled with machines and mechanics.
On the ground floor, you’ll find the museum’s cosy café, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and delicious sweets. In summer, you can enjoy your coffee outdoors in the beautiful surroundings. There is also a museum shop with a large selection of lovely gift items and local handicrafts.
In the museum’s exhibitions, you can dive into the area’s history, and in 2026 the special exhibition I naturen (In the Nature) will be shown, where the acclaimed artist Finn Have portrayed the region’s landscapes.
