Pevnev Ballet Academy is Perth’s southern suburbs’ premier Classical Ballet school offering training specialising in Vaganova technique. To complement students’ ballet training the Academy offers specialist Pointe classes, Contemporary dance, Character dance and Dance Conditioning. The Academy prides itself on providing classical ballet training of the highest calibre. Former students of the Academy are now continuing their training and professional careers in schools in Russia, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Classes are available to students from 3 years of age to pre-professional level, as well as adult classes. Gifted students may audition to participate in the Elite programs; Junior Extension, ‘After School Program’, or the Full-Time Program, which are designed to enrich and broaden the dance experience of dedicated and focused students. Our aim is to instil in all students a love of movement, music and dance whilst establishing correct technique and imparting an appreciation of the traditions of classical ballet.

Vaganova Method of Classical Ballet From 2021, Pevnev Ballet Academy will concentrate on delivering Classical ballet training in the Vaganova method of Classical Ballet, developed by Agrippina Vaganova (pictured above teaching at the Vaganova Academy in St Petersburg). The Vaganova is the chosen method by most full-time ballet schools as well as most professional companies around the world and therefore, giving Pevnev students the best training and opportunity for a career in dance. The method fuses elements of traditional French style from the romantic era with the athleticism and virtuosity of Italian Cecchetti technique. The training system is designed to involve the whole body in every movement, with equal attention paid to the upper body, legs and feet. Vaganova believed that this approach increases consciousness of the body, thus creating a harmony of movement and greater expressive range. The steps in the Vaganova method builds on a carefully developed progression in which the “basic” or “preparatory” forms are mastered before the dancer moves on to more difficult forms. The method is founded upon the idea that when a dancer is introduced to a step, he or she will have developed the correct strength in foundation in order for their steps and movements to be successful.

International Character Dance Syllabus The International Character Dance Syllabus has been designed and written by Australia’s leading exponent of Character Dance, Alida Segal. Her experience began in 1970 with Madame Marina Berezowsky AM and continued while studying at the world-renowned Moiseyev School in Moscow. This clear and concise training program takes students from basic concepts to professional standards in preparation for a career on the stage. The course includes active physical practice of technique & movement, as well as information about music and rhythm. Elements of ethnology, physics and design are also involved. This results in a more holistic education & understanding of the development of dance styles.
