Initial material explorations of wood revealed interactions between veneer and water results in a self determining curling of the wood product.
The curling can be solidiďŹ ed in watery plaster. The relationship between the veneer and plaster allow the plaster to form the veneer and the veneer to form the plaster.

The addition of a maker space to the community bridges the gap of other maker spaces that exist outside the city. Maker functions are available to the growing community as well as the schools that border the site.

The building is formed by a series of rotated ﬂoor plates that react to the exterior pressures of the site. The program of the building rises from the ground plane into space, forming to the interior pressures of the skin. Various programs expand through space, linking diﬀering ﬂoors throughout the creative process.

With the use of rotated ďŹ‚oor plates, the building gains a sense of upward mobility as the form expands through space. The ďŹ‚oor plans are arranged in a radial system, based on the center point of the central atrium. 4

absorbing & ďŹ ltering eco-social ďŹ‚ows through time A new research/education facility for The UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island, Georgia. The construction consists of overlapping and interpenetrating systems that allow socio-ecological functions to coexist on the site while accounting for future ecological changes.

Initial research uncovered the threat of rising sea levels to the island. Coupled with the overlap of marine and terrestrial conditions creating various conditions of interpenetrability, design solutions must account for extreme weather events, decrease impact on the ground plane, and allow for the natural ecosystem to thrive.
The design take ideals from the sea sponge, in both structural sponge formation and physical sponge processes, to allow natural ecological ďŹ‚ow to permeate the site undisturbed, while employing a regulating cantor set to create a sense of overlap through opaque, translucent, and transparent conditions.

current scheme potential expansion
The building itself mimics the sea sponge in the display of varied densities of enclosure. The river-facing facades serve as permeable barriers, allowing the interpenetration of indoor and outdoor functions. The cantor set provides the ability to expand the scheme while still maintaining the original geometries. 20
Physical sponge processes are created on the ground plane to enhance the ﬁltration of groundwater runoﬀ and allow interpenetration of existing marine ecosystems. The overall raised condition accounts for extreme weather events, speciﬁcally sea level rise.

integrating science and art This addition to the College of Design East building on Georgia Tech's campus serves as a collaboration space between art and science.
John Carter, Incursions II, 2012-13
John Carter's works often depict the tension found between painting and sculpture as well as ďŹ gures within the work. This piece includes both solids and voids, in which Carter attempts to reverse the roles of each. The art work is governed by an over-arching grid of slipped squares, creating a sense of strict geometry, while allowing for slight asymmetries to occur. The work can be imagined as a series of tilted planes creating illusionistic perspective. 28
Taking inspiration from Incursions II, this constructivist piece employs tilted planes to create the illusion of a planer object when viewed from the top. The void from the original piece is reimagined as a physical form in a two-dimensional perspective illusion.

The addition provides stark visual diďŹ€erence between old and new while still retaining a sense of continuity to the original. With a metal exterior wrapping, the distinction of what traditionally constitutes roof and wall is blurred.

drawing from nodes across the site Apex provides a community center for Savannah, Georgia that restores the site to the original tything plan the city was founded on. Based on mat-building strategies, the building draws on several points surrounding the site to extend views out towards the city.
By reinstating the original dimension of the tything systems, the site is transformed from a parking lot into an active portion of the larger Savannah urban strategy.
The design draws on points derived from the entrance of the Civic Center and the center of the neighboring square to create visually distinct corridors . These immensely transparent forms provide enhanced view sheds both in and out.

adaptive lifestyle shelter A modular housing solution for refugees of the Al Zaatri Refugee Camp. The project utilizes shipping containers in shape grammar conﬁgurations. The proposed container conﬁgurations adapt to several scales, from individual to population, while also being tailored to diﬀering lifestyles.
The two diďŹ€erent ďŹ‚oor plans are inhabitable by two diďŹ€erent lifestyles. One provides privacy from the main street but opens up to the back alley, a design oriented to support an extended family scheme. The other is very open to the street, oriented towards public home markets.
