C H ÂT E A U DE LA C H E V ALLERIE I first experienced Château de la Chevallerie in the summer of 2017 and it was love at first sight. In a state of total neglect and disrepair, I nonetheless saw La Chevallerie’s charm, its incredible architectural details, and I was compelled to purchase the property. Th rough time , energy and even a global pandemic, my love for this restoration has only grown, as I’ve become more intimately a cqua inted with the place. This is not the first Château that I h ave owned, and for me it isn’t about property acquisition or other secula r pursuits, but rather, it’s something much more ethereal, more intimate and personal. Th is plac e, with all of its wonderful history, and the challenge of making it viable for life in the 21st century, is the ultimate canvas for me to express who I am, a nd to play a smal l role in pres erving some of the patrimony and culture of our world’s architecture. – Timothy Corrigan

Kyle Bunting proudly introduces Chateau, a new collection of European-inspired hide rugs developed with Timothy Corrigan. The collection features six new designs - Aubusson, Chambord, Empire, Moderne, Polonaise and Savonnière - inspired by Corrigan’s French Estate in the Loire Valley; Château de la Chevallerie. Long-time friends and collaborators, Bunting and Corrigan anticipated unveiling the collection with the completed renovation of Corrigan’s Chateau. As global circumstances changed and the inevitable delay, the pair decided the time was right to unveil the collection now.

BIENVENUE À LA MAISON When I was first introduced to the Château, it was along this private drive, after passing through tall iron gates at the main road. The century old oaks standing on each side of the road greeted and embraced me like old friends. There, I began to get the sense that this was going to be my next home. As you pass along the half-mile long entry drive, you get occasional glimpses through the trees of the chateau in the distance. It’s at that moment that you begin to fee l the outside world disappear and gain a sense that you are entering a magical place, one that will restore and rejuvenate your soul.

A UB USSO N Inspired by 18th and 19th century English and French rugs that delight the eye with floral and leaf motifs, this contemporary interpretation adds a trellis background and a geometric border to create a fresh take on a classic design.

After the long gravel drive, you come upon a small bridge that passes over a moat and then through a set of tall, open gates. I like the symbolism of opened gates, that, much like an open door, says: “Welcome, you are wanted here!” Homes should be places in which we feel nourished, comfortable and safe; in that kind o f environment, we are encouraged and allowed to be the very best versions of ourselves.

The château is surrounded by 100 acres of canals, waterfalls, formal gardens, fields, and magnificent woods. The grounds offer the perfect blend of French formality, set amidst a backdrop of bucolic countryside. While the property is generally flat, there are soft inclines and rolling hills that pierce the landscape, offering mystery and a subtle sense of drama to the vastness of the space. There’s a remarkable peacefulness in the casual formality of the grounds. At the end of a

long canal is a charming boat

house, surrounded by fields of grazing sheep. A number of sculptures and follies provide wonderful surprises as you walk the park and woods. In a place designed by the man who created the famed Tuileries Gardens in Paris, is the juxtaposition of art, architecture and nature that makes the experience so unique and fulfilling.

Private chapels are found in many châteaux throughout France. At La Chevallerie, I decided to transform the formerly dark wood chapel into a luminous, light-filled small dining room. It’s here that my family and friends will enjoy leisurely morning breakfasts with the doors open to the gardens and the sound of water splashing in an old stone fountain. It’s those special and universal moments of kinship and family that I wanted to reflect and represent in this space: almost a moment in time, a memory, the essence of homecoming.

One of the most spectacular areas of the château is a former artist’s studio: a vast space with tall windows that is fil led with soft, northern light, on even the darkest of days. The studio is so special, that I decided to transform it into my own personal suite. I have always found it important to live in a space that delights the eye and nourishes the soul, and this space does both.

The rear of the château looks out upon a generous stretch of lawn and the 50 acres of woods that lay beyond the park. There one can stroll the grounds, visit wooded spaces, and feel the quiet essence of the countryside. Over the years, I have become attuned to a greater appreciation of trees; their determination and fortitude, their stability and grace, and the sense that they have borne witness to so many things and yet still carry on. It is the blend of splendid architecture and nature, in both its tamed and untouched glory, that makes this place so unique and provides the framework for my creativity.

JEAN-BAPTISTE D’ANVILLE In t he front courtyard is a sculpture of Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville, one of the owners of the château during the mid-18th century. As the King’s cartographer, his ownership, in history with the property, captured my attention. Cartographers are mapmakers and my business employs a similar craft; different tools, but symmetrical pathways. I felt a kindred spirit in the presence of the sculpture, perhaps thinking that, if he were alive today, he’d appreciate what we created, and Mr Corrigan’s enterprise. Similarly, to me, Tim is, and always will be, more brother than friend. Through many journeys, some physical, and others deeply personal, he’s been a steady reminder of how strength, compassion, courage, and love can define us all. Tim has taught me to live as I love, with all I have. And his passion for life, and La Chavellerie, is a refreshing reminder of a sweet memory, and the potential in us all. – Kyle Bunting
