Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club “Inspiring A life long passion for excellence”

The Rink Link President’s Message Welcome back to another exciting skating season. We have many special events planned as we enter our 75th anniversary year. Kicking off these celebrations is an anniversary dinner to be held on Saturday September 28. All current and former KWSC members, friends, and family are invited. We hope you will join us for this very special event. Ticket order forms can be found on our website at After a long absence KWSC will once again have a float in the Santa Claus Parade, which takes place Saturday November 16. Please mark your calendars and watch our website for more details as they become available. As you likely know, KWSC is a not-or-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. I am pleased to welcome our newest Board of Director members Sandi Chalhoub and Sally Heath to our leadership team. I also thank our retiring directors Peter Joza and Bill Poje for their countless invaluable contributions to KWSC including their years of service on the board. Thank you also to all our other volunteers who are so generous with their time, including our program assistants, event and competition volunteers, test organizers and evaluators. We have a greater than normal demand for volunteers this year because of the many anniversary celebratory events planned, including a very special ice show involving all our skaters. I hope you will consider joining our volunteer team to help us with these events. More details can be found on our website at Paul Mallet, KWSC President

Notice to all KWSC Members We are excited to announce a new leadership team for our singles programming along with some upcoming changes to our programming, starting on September 1st. Michelle Leigh will be serving as our new Technical Consultant to work in partnership with Kris Wirtz who will be expanding his role at KWSC to include serving as our new Singles Discipline Consultant. You may recall this team co-delivered a very dynamic and well-attended Olympic Year Seminar of Excellence to our club on May 31st. This leadership team has demonstrated an ability to work effectively together with our skaters. Michelle Leigh has been coaching for 32 years and is NCCP Level 5 certified. Some of her past students include Canadian Champion, World Champion and Olympic Silver medalist Elvis Stojko, two-time World Bronze medalist Takeski Honda, and six -time Canadian Champion Jennifer Robinson. Kris Wirtz is no stranger to the KWSC and as a skater and a coach he has extensive experience in both the singles and pairs disciplines. Together with his wife Kristy he has coached teams to 8 national medals and many teams to national and international success including current national team members Kristen Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch who placed 4th at the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships in London. Kris was a silver national medalist in junior men and represented Canada internationally in singles. He also coached two junior medalists in the singles discipline at nationals. He has over 18 years of coaching experience and is NCCP Level 3 certified. He is a two-time Canadian champion and has competed at three separate Olympic games. Kris has also been named the Skate Canada Western Ontario Section Competitive Coach of the Year three times in the past 4 years. One of the biggest changes will be a move to group lessons on Tuesdays and Saturdays for our competitive teams. Our competitive coaches will work together with the group of all levels of competitive skaters during these group sessions so all skaters will benefit from the collective expertise and experience of our coaches. We look forward to exciting changes to our program in the fall.

Congratulations Paul Macintosh!

Skater Spotlight Liam McKenzie is 11 and has been skating for 3 years and is currently in the Intermediate Competitive program at KWSC. His favourite part of skating is the jumping and his best element is his double loop. He is currently working on landing his double axel. He is also working hard on improving his spins and will soon be competing at the pre-novice level. Outside of skating he enjoys tennis and soccer.

Paul Macintosh has recently received his NCCP Level 5 certification! This makes Paul the first coach in Western Ontario Section to have achieved this milestone. Paul joins a very small group of only 11 Level 5 skating coaches in the entire country, including 2 ice dance coaches. Congratulations Paul on his outstanding achievement!

Welcome Justine DeRabbie! Annika McKenzie is 8 and has been skating for 5 years and is currently in the Junior Competitive program at KWSC. Her favourite part of competing is all of the beautiful dresses she gets to wear for competitions. Her best element is her axel and she is working on her double salchow and improving her jumps and spins. She is excited about starting gymnastics.

Justine joins the staff of the Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club as our new Membership Coordinator. Justine is a recent graduate from Nipissing University and a former skater with the KWSC. She is excited to be back and to meet everyone. Make sure to stop by and say hello!

KWSC 75th Anniversary ICE SHOW KWSC’s Ice Show allows skaters to apply their technique and enjoyment of skating to a live production featuring innovative choreography and tasteful costumes in a positive atmosphere. The performance opportunity is offered to all our skaters in a professional show setting. Skating, as a sport and as an artistic expression, is meant to be shared and to be performed!

Corporate Sponsorship The Ice Show needs Corporate Sponsors to celebrate our 75th Anniversary Ice Show with us. An Ice Show is an expensive endeavor and the money we raise supports our skaters in their pursuit toward excellence. If you would like to help by calling on business for support or would like to investigate how you can support yourself, please contact Alison Smerchinski for further details. Opportunities exist at all donation levels.

The production celebrates our 75th year. It gives skaters an opportunity to entertain their parents and friends with the results of their proEmail: gress and successful training. Their training continues as the show Phone: 519-497-7653 experience teaches elements that they learn apply to all aspects of their life – poise, responsibility, self-discipline, confidence, and teamwork. The skaters get to work with club members across all our programs. International Competitors and Beginners, Hockey Players and Figure Skaters all come together and share the ice.
