Twin City Hockey Skating School Twin City Hockey Skating School Achievements!! Twin City was very proud to have two skaters at this year’s World Junior Championships, Tanner Pearson and Mark Scheifele. Tanner skated with Bob since he was Bantam age fine tuning his skating skills and Mark joined Twin’s NHL/OHL/Midget skating sessions this past summer. They both should be returning this summer, so if you would like to view some of these sessions, and get out of the heat check our website for days and times. Also, Mike Halmo, from Waterloo, who plays for the Owen Sound Attack just signed an entry level contract with the New York Islanders. CONGRATULATIONS to another TCHSS graduate! We will have camps running this summer for all levels from Atom up. Hope to see you on one of our sessions. Visit www.twincityhockeyskating.ca for program detail. Message from Marie As we celebrate the end of winter session with our SHOWCASE this week (all are welcome- tickets available at the door- Sat march 24th at 3pm) we are in full swing to launch spring session. One notable change for spring this year is a new group junior star format named “Introduction to Figure skating”. This program has been designed by Kristy Wirtz, 2 time Canadian champion and Olympian, 7 time world team member, who leads an impressive group of coaches in providing a strong base for skaters moving from our CanSkate and Enrichment programs into our Star Skate system. We have also added Power 1 and 2 classes on Saturday evenings to meet the growing demand in our power skating division, Twin City Hockey Skating School. Our spring session has some challenges with holidays requiring facility closure and “no skating days” as well as Rim Park hosting tournaments and the Ontario Skills event where there will be parking lot disruptions on selected days.

Showcase Showcase 2012 – Presenting IceList – March 24th 3pm Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex – Tickets at the Door. It's hard to imagine that planning for Showcase 2012 has been underway for four months now. We are grateful to the many volunteers who donated their time and energy to making "IceList" a huge success. But more importantly we are thrilled for the nearly 300 skaters who participated in the show. Rebecca Babb spent countless hours on and off the ice; planning, dancing, skating and directing everyone in their routines. So many smiles and laughs! Many memories are being made for all the children, teens and adults who are a part of the production experience. We also would like to thank the generous sponsors for helping to make our show happen. All of the donations were greatly appreciated! For those watching, we hope you all enjoy Showcase 2012 - we know we will! We look forward to Showcase 2014 when the club will be wrapping up celebrations for the 75th Anniversary. L.T.A.D Info Session Competitive Parents When: Tuesday April 10th Time: 5:45—6:30 pm Where: KWSC Boardroom 1 STAR Parents When: Monday April 16th Time: 6:05—7:05 pm Where: KWSC Boardroom 1

Skaters and parents will notice as we prepare for spring school that some session names and requirements have changed to reflect the new category and age requirements that Skate Canada has introduced for the 2012/13 season. Summarized below is the impact on Competitive skating. Please note parents are invited to attend an L.T.A.D information session. (see side bar on left for details.) Junior Comp – This program is for skaters who are entering the 2013 Sectional championship (hosted in November 2012) in Pre-Juvenile under 11 and the Pre-Juvenile under 14. Both of these events have a test prerequisite of the complete Junior Bronze Free Skate test. Space permitting: Skater who have completed Senior Bronze Free Skate test and are competing at the 2013 WOS STARSkate Championships in the Senior Bronze or above level singles event. This program will also include skating skill sessions and dance sessions to reflect the stage of development as suggested in the LTAD.

George’s involvement in skating goes well beyond his work as a coach. He has served as the Korean delegate to the ISU congress since 1992, representing the views of small country partners. He was an international judge in singles and dance, and served as the chairman of the figure skating technical committee and a member for over 10 years where he provided interpreter services to ISU officials. He has served as the ISU technical delegate for the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, and organized all the ISU short track, speed skate, and figure skating events in Korea for over 10 years. George served as the Korean Skate National team head coach and team leader for 10 years, including the 1998 Nagano Olympics.

Congratulations George and your family on becoming new Canadians! KWSC is very fortunate to have you in our skating family, and now Canada is fortunate to also call you one of its own.

Synchronized Skating

KWSC has a number of skaters who qualified for both provincial championships, Ontario Winter Games in Barrie (March 8 – 11) and the Trillium Championships in North Bay (March 16 – 18). It is a wonderful honor for our skaters to advance to these events. The skaters have worked hard and qualified for these championships at a variety of different events. One of the fun stories this year is that a brother and sister qualified and they don’t dance together or skate Pair together but rather they are both Singles skaters.

Intermediate Comp – This program is for skaters who are entering the 2013 Sectional Championship (hosted in November 2012) in the Juvenile under 11 and the Juvenile under 14 and the Pre-Novice singles events. All 3 of these events have a test prerequisite of the complete Junior Bronze Free Skate test. Space permitting: a skater who has passed their complete Junior Silver Free Skate test and are competing at the 2013 WOS STARSkate championships in the Junior Silver singles event. Senior Comp – This program is for skaters who are entering the 2013 Sectional Championship (hosted in November 2012) in the Novice, Junior or Senior singles events. All 3 of these events have a test prerequisite of the complete Gold Free Skate test. Space permitting: a skater who has passed their complete Junior Gold Free Skate test and are competing at the 2013 WOS STARSkate championships in the Gold singles event. There are not age restrictions for this program.

At a ceremony held in Kitchener last January, KWSC base coach George (Seung-Jong) Han and his two sons, Brian and Kevin, took the oath of citizenship and became new Canadians. George has worked at KWSC for 7 years, coaching in recreational, STARSkate, and competitive programs. Prior to that, he coached in his native homeland of Korea for 20 years.

Pair and Competitive Ice Dance – Skate Canada’s LTAD has some impact on the age and stage of these programs however their requirements remain the same as in previous years. Together with our teams of coaches, KWSC is looking forward to a bright and successful Future for our skaters. As you process this information the most logical place to start is with your base coach. Should you have any questions that are left unanswered please do not hesitate to contact Paul MacIntosh pmacintosh@kwsc.org

Anna and Yi Zhou have skated here at KWSC all their lives and this year Yi Qualified for the Ontario Winter Games in Pre-Novice men and Anna qualified for the Trillium Championship in Pre-Juvenile Ladies. What a great accomplishment for both skaters and all of KWSC is as proud of them as Mom and Dad. What is the best part about making it to a provincial championship?
