e started the month of March entering our final quarter of the school year. There are a few more months before we close out our school year officially and yet our program continues to grow. In March, we updated the way we present our Morning Bulletin. Instead of having our anchors read out announcements in the studios, we now have teams who create videos for the announcements. Each video has different reporters, reporting the announcements. Four teams worked together in making our new format for our Morning bulletins. We've formed various teams to work on projects for the morning bulletin or standalone studios. Meaning each team is given an assignment or a project to work on. This also allows our KVIKS members to learn the process of video production and other interests and most important is to have our members become productive. This new change in our program allows us to go from good to great, which is one of our program’s main core. Our new Morning bulletin is now formatted in a news show. From talking with the advisor, Luke, and early members of KVIKS, this format is one of the main goals that this program has been trying to achieve for years. Now we finally have achieved it. Each after school shifts now begins with daily briefings to let everyone the work that needs to be accomplished that day and to remind members which team they are part of.
We continue to become better and better as a whole!

arch was very exciting. We wanted to get as many students possible involved in the making of the morning bulletin. From what we experienced, we noticed just how talented our students are when they put their mind and hearts to it. Writing this letter so late, including from the month of May, there are so many things that I want to say, but you are going to have to wait until our May 15, 2022 edition of KVIKS Spotlight to Read. I would like to give a heartfelt mahalo to our students, parents and guardians for their support of our program, and we are looking forward to an amazing end of our year.

march Recap by Erin Wagner
With the start of the final quarter, KVIKS Media has been able to dramatically expand the morning bulletin while also maintaining its usual broadcasting events. With so many members and so many new opportunities, we’re glad to see countless different people become more involved. With the previous addition of new departments in KVIKS, we’ve seen an enormous amount of people get involved. Spot crews, studios teams, tech, and all of our other departments have been wildly successful and we’re thrilled to see so many more people with a purpose after school. Our news spot and studios teams in particular have helped to truly transform the morning bulletin. Anela Pola, a member of our spot teams, said this about working on various announcements:
“My experience in producing the morning bulletin is fun. Something that I find fun about KVIKS is when the spot teams get to go around campus and film, instead of our anchors sitting in one spot and having the same boring background. I know KVIKS is doing a better job of giving the kids more work to do, instead of having most of the kids sit around. The kids in KVIKS are fun, funny, and entertaining. KVIKS is a great afterschool program to join.” Through teams like spots and studios, more people are becoming familiar with our most commonly used equipment like cameras, tripods, and microphones. With setting up different angles and practicing good composition in videos becoming almost a daily routine, we’ve seen many show a new interest in broadcasting that we’re glad to have.

Speaking of broadcasting, we’ve had a number of broadcasts this month. From volleyball with Na Leo TV to delayed baseball games, we’ve had quite a few interesting broadcasts. One of the most memorable nights was a broadcast of a home baseball game. Before the game had even started, it was delayed nearly two hours due to lightning! After a long wait, we finally began the stream. It went on without too much difficulty, but with the fact we were already running late in our minds, many of us were just waiting for the game to end. As the 7th inning ended, we realized that we would be going into overtime. Despite the momentary dread, the KVIKS broadcasting crew persevered through the night to deliver a successful, and overall enjoyable stream. Reana Lagronio, a part of that fateful crew, had this to say of the event:
“Even before the baseball broadcast, things were pretty crazy. Rain was pouring like crazy and we all thought the game was gonna be canceled (but it wasn't). When we arrived at Wong Stadium, set our equipment up, and went live, there was a long wait because it was pouring literal LITERS of water. The sky cleared up, and the game FINALLY started. Then yeah uh, lightning struck and it took a good 60-90 minutes till the game resumed. Everything was going smoothly, until we had to go overtime. It wasn't really an awesome experience, but that definitely won't stop me from attending baseball live streams. I still had a great time even though I fell asleep multiple times!”
Pressley Domingo, a photographer at the volleyball stream, said this about seeing what Na Leo TV does:
“It was really fascinating, seeing the trailer, the equipment, and especially the cameras was incredible.”
With all we learned, we hope to work with Na Leo TV When one of our volleyball streams was broadcasted by Naonce more in the future, but until then, we aim to Leo TV, a few of our members got to see what a professionalcontinue delivering the best streams we can. With all our broadcast looks like! Despite the strangeness of not new teams, and departments, and given what we’ve been broadcasting a game we attended, we were able to learn aable to achieve, we’re incredibly excited to see KVIKS lot about the world of professional broadcasting. Media continue to grow and prosper. We hope to see new faces get involved with more opportunities in the coming months, and we can’t wait to see what new part of KVIKS we create next.

BrightSpot:
by Clara Steele The Morning Bulletin Continuously, the KVIKS News Bulletin has been increasing in quality. In the hopes of making the bulletin more engaging and getting more students involved in KVIKS, we’ve been adding on-site news reports, skits, and switching our bulletin up a few times weekly to make it more dynamic for about a month now. With this change, more people have been able to get involved in KVIKS, see how to use all the equipment we have to offer, and become passionate and confident video creators! Let’s see what the students of KVIKS think of this change to our bulletin… Nathan Ragasa, a sophomore, and very active member of KVIKS Media says he’s noticed a change in KVIKS since we started switching up the bulletin.
"For me, when I watch the older bulletins with the original and legacy members of KVIKS, it's very obvious that the Morning Bulletin has improved. As time goes on, I just see more and more improvements think that it really shows that with the advancement of technology and tools at our disposal, we are able to make bulletins, news reports, and skits much better. I personally have fun when I edit the bulletin because of how much influence I have over just the thumbnail.” Newer members of KVIKS Media have also seen changes to the bulletin and have reaped some of its benefits. Jasmine Heaster, a junior in KVIKS Media, says that “With the new innovations to the bulletin, it has allowed me to be more creative with a team and it taught me how to film proper videos on the fly.” Jasmine also says that “It has allowed me to learn how to work in all the areas that together create the bulletin: from being an anchor to a camera op to an editor; it allowed our teams to become more flexible in our expertise as we need to learn how to operate the equipment, edit the material, film the material neatly and put some creative juice into it, and it teaches us how to be assertive anchors to report on issues.” It’s fair to say that the KVIKS News bulletin has greatly improved over the years, and will only continue to do so as time goes on and more and more members become engaged and educated on all aspects of the filmmaking process. I think I speak for everyone when I say I’m very excited about where this new bulletin will take us in the future!

Network Acting Sus By Nathan Ragasa
(HILO) - On the first day of 4th quarter, March 21st, 2022, Hilo High School experienced a severe network issue involving the WiFi, Internet, Bells and Phones. Seeing how dependent our school is on the internet, the outage caused multiple problems for the students, teachers, and staff. According to Hilo High School’s Technology Coordinator, Luke Eclipse-Ujano, “We first noticed the issue when the 8:00 bell failed to ring. I checked the system and things appeared normal on my end, so I informed the right people to get it fixed. Our Complex Area IT Manager was on site most of the day and worked with the DOE’s Network Team to get the issues resolved.”
Tatsuya Koch, a 12th Grader said, “During my Culinary 1 class, we unfortunately resorted to speaking with each other. We promised we would not talk about politics.” Billy, “I was in ceramics, and we don’t use Computers, if I was in any other class, I would have LOVED IT, especially Mrs. Sanbei’s class.” Kylia, “I was unable to watch Netflix during Chad Hao’s Class. ;’( I was devastated. ;’( I didn’t know how to emotionally feel. ;’( I was desperate to know if things were cake or not. ;’(“ Although the bells did not work, some just knew when the bell was supposed to ring, and as these students began to pack and leave, others followed in suit.
Kalani Keliipaakaua, a 10th Grader observed, “I did not realize that our morning routine of raising the flags included our school’s network. Our JROTC cadets patiently waited a long time before realizing that their cue to raise the flag at 8:05 would not be played. It was very sad.”
12
The outage lasted until Period 4, until it was fixed, bells could be heard in a few areas, and during STARS, the whole network came to a halt. Access to the internet was completely gone.

get involved
By Nathan Ragasa and Luke Eclipse-Ujano
The daily production of the Morning Bulletin will always welcome members to participate, and allows for members to help out with one of KVIKS Media’s most active duties. If the bulletin has everyone needed for its production, then idle members could help by assisting Spots Teams in their video productions that will be put on the bulletin. Live streams always welcome members to participate in, whether it be experienced or new members. As always, positions that are available are Camera Operator, Broadcast Tech, Technical Director, depending on if the broadcast, Scoreboard, and now Broadcast News! The job of the news crew is to learn how to do sports journalism by interviewing players, coaches, or audience. Taking videos and photos of the live stream also helps give photos to add in the articles and future Spotlight articles. If members feel as if they don’t have enough experience, they are welcome to learn how any position works by asking Jasmine Gardner, Nathan Ragasa, or any of our broadcast regulars. To participate in a broadcast, members will only need to ask Jasmine Gardner, Nathan Ragasa, or Reana Lagronio in-person or through Discord and a position will be assigned and posted to the WhenIWork app thanks to Reana

The daily production of the Morning Bulletin will always welcome members to participate, and allows for members to help out with one of KVIKS Media’s most active duties. Should students be unable to attend after school activities, a way to participate in KVIKS Media activities during school hours is Audio/Video. This school year, new events such as lunchtime rallies, where students can take up the position of Audio/Video Technician, Photographer, and occasionally Camera Operator. As always, the McChicken Fund always welcomes donations as KVIKS solely relies on it to provide some sort of sustenance for members. The donations will be used to provide snacks for KVIKS students who stay after school to help with the bulletin, or to provide a meal for those who attend broadcasts. With the donation of just $3, our Catering department could purchase a box of chips for the members, so any donation is welcome.
