EDITOR'S LETTER Dylan Yanazaki
As the seasons changed from Winter to Spring, so has the shifting of focuses in KVIKS. Spring itself is all about starting fresh and beginning again and with KVIKS, this brings us a new opportunity to learn and grow as a club. Throughout the past month, KVIKS has expanded into different sections of departments all dealing with their own variation of media, stemming from AV, to news, to tech. With this in mind, it is our goal to bring new light to different areas of media. Not only that, but this month has continued to allow KVIKS to experience broadcasting off-campus. We hope to be able to reach some of our fullest potential on live streams. Having all that in mind, it is truly my honor to bring you this month's March issue of KVIKS Spotlight. Enjoy!
ADVISOR'S LETTER Luke Eclipse-Ujano
Aloha KVIKS Media 'Ohana! This past mid-February, we changed how we schedule students for work sessions. Students will now be assigned to work on projects on days they are available. These projects range from creating infographics for social media, to producing videos for the morning bulletin. To also encourage a variety of people to attend live broadcasts, students were split into three separate groups: Advance Notice, On Call and Catering. A lot of our broadcasting regulars end up in the On Call group, by offering Advance Notice students positions first, or equally, we were able to provide first-time experiences for these students who could never quickly fill one of our coveted broadcasting positions. Also, we finally got our KVIKS Media shirts! We understand that the sizing is much larger than anticipated, so we are looking to purchasing smaller sizes to replace them. I am proud to announce that as of the publication of this issue, the KVIKS News Bulletin has changed for the better, where we go from being anchor based to reporter based. If you watch the 3/11/2022 News Bulletin, you will see how much more effective our reporting and skit based news broadcast can be. To pull this off, we need students to be committed to attending their assigned work session. All this was made possible because of our scheduling change.

“During the soccer live stream we had at Kamehameha, we had a lot of things to overcome. Our fear of heights (more like my fear of heights), lack of equipment, and the issues we had going live. Luckily, we’re just so epic and built amazingly, that we were able to work with what we had, and we all did a wonderful job! I absolutely loved that live stream, since it was the birth of the ROOFSTERS. OLE OLE OLE OLEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! ”

FEBRUARY RECAP BY ERIN WAGNER
KVIKS Media has continued its travels around the island broadcasting all sorts of events. With so much to do and so many members, we’ve also been working on ways to get organized! From a new bus to new departments, there have been several changes throughout the club.
Walking through the hot sun with equipment was tiring, especially with sand in our shoes. Even so, the fun we had and what we were able to do was worth it; and we hope to see more people getting involved in news.
Our streams this month continued to take us offcampus, whether it was to Bayfront for canoe races or all the way to Kona for basketball. At these broadcasts, we almost always focus on whatever is live. However, we’ve recently begun to include interview segments produced on-site by our recently created news crews! Nga Hoang, a part of the February 12th canoe paddling news crew on Bayfront, said this about the experience
“It was fun doing something new in KVIKS and interviewing people from different schools.”
06
February also provided many opportunities to broadcast final games. For instance, the previously mentioned canoe paddling championship, a wrestling tournament, boys’ basketball finals, and the boys' soccer championships! All of these games took us off campus, with the boys’ basketball game taking us to Konawaena High School on the 18th for a special collaboration with Konawaena’s media club! Working with their team was a spectacular experience for all involved, allowing all of us to learn and meet new people.
Nathan Ragasa, another member of the February 12th news crew, voiced a similar interest:
Kira Edmoundson, a member of Konawaena’s media team, said this about their experience working with KVIKS
“Being a part of the news crew for one of the paddling live streams was quite interesting, as I learned how to use a different camera as well as hear the thoughts of the paddlers themselves, along with their coaches.”
“It’s a lot more techy than what we have, but I think it’s overall really fun and pretty easy to pick up on. Thanks for letting me have this experience!”

FEBRUARY RECAP Also on the Konawaena media team, Justin Afga, said “The hands-on stuff of operating and moving the camera is very simple. It looks difficult from an outside perspective, but it’s pretty fun!” The excitement around working with another media club was certainly shared, and Jazz Gardner, treasurer of KVIKS, said this about working with the Konawaena media members:
“It felt pretty fun to work with new people and get to teach them the ways of KVIKS.” With the wonderful experience we had with the Konawaena media club, we hope to work with them again in the future. After the stream, we headed home on our brand new KVIKS bus with the tired satisfaction of another fun broadcast.

The day after, the boys’ soccer championships also took us off-campus. This time, to Kamehameha Schools. Upon arriving, some of us had to overcome the fear of heights because, for the first time, we were able to set up on the roof of the press box! Setting up in such a small outdoor space was definitely a challenge, but with some teamwork and determination, all of us were able to overcome our fears and prepare to start the steam. Unfortunately, even though we were ready to start, we had some issues going live! This led to the first stream starting late, but we adjusted quickly to the timing and carried on with the game. However, the issues with the stream carried on into the second game leading to the stream, inexplicably cutting out just as the first goal of the game was made! Despite all these obstacles, we were determined to continue the streams. Once the games had ended and all was done, we were able to celebrate not one, but two generally successful streams.

FEBRUARY RECAP With all the places we’ve been to recently, we hope to see more of the island as we continue to provide quality streams for the community. This month also had another extensive broadcast: wrestling. Traveling to Kealakehe High, several students spent nearly 10 hours working with KVIKS to produce an amazing stream! Joseph Gardner, a senior at the wrestling stream, had this to say about the event: “The Kealekehe Wrestling Livestream was an experience like no other! Waking up early was probably the hardest part of the day, for since we had to drive to the West side of the Island before the wrestling tournament started. The scenic and restful bus ride in the KVIKS short bus allowed us to prepare for the arduous day of streaming ahead of us. Setting up the stream was relatively simple but figuring out the technicalities of the tournament was among the harder aspects for the stream. Challenges like cameras falling down the bleachers and the long matches that almost drove the crew to insanity made the small victories and effort completely worth it. Victories both on the wrestling mat and in the broadcast brought great experience, greater celebrations, and even greater memories with everyone helping at the stream. With a broadcast outro made, the stream ended, photos taken, and a cold bus drive to the school done, what was effectively a successful broadcast and adventure for the KVIKS Media crew was complete”

FEBRUARY RECAP KVIKS has been very successful in its work lately, as shown by everyone's dedication and excitement surrounding our activities. With all our people and projects, we’ve been working on getting organized aiming to give everyone a purpose. We have begun to expand into all sorts of new departments, ranging from News crews to Tech. Already, these new departments have proven successful in giving all of our members something to do on the days they’re available. Pressley Domingo, president of KVIKS Media, thought this of the new system:
“All the new departments are awesome it feels more organized and efficient. It’s really cool to see everyone have a sense of purpose. Everyone actively looks for something to do and I think the new departments have really helped in that sense.” We’re so excited to see the countless kids in KVIKS finding new jobs in the club and we look forward to future progress. United by our new gradient polo shirts, we’re looking forward to the next quarter full of new spring sports to broadcast. We can’t wait to see new members get involved, and we can’t imagine what more amazing things KVIKS can accomplish next

MEET THE KVIKS Media Advisors
Luke Eclipse-Ujano
I am a proud graduate of the Hilo High School Class of 2011. I became interested in videography, photography, website design and technology at a young age and pursued it at all schools. As a high school senior, I participated in the live KVIKS bulletin program, participated in the inaugural season of PBS Hawaii’s HIKI NO program, and competed in video competitions, winning first place in junior year. I was hired immediately after graduation to work at Hilo Intermediate and started the Spartan TV program. A few years later I started working at Hilo High School in 2013 and was appointed to Tech Coordinator in 2015.
Darian Takase
In addition to being a Transitions and Health teacher at Hilo High, I am also a proud graduate from Hilo High’s class of 2015! My experience prior to being at Hilo High school was mainly within the medical/life sciences field where I was an Emergency Medical Technician at a Level 1 trauma center, studied brain cancer at the Mayo Clinic, and taught a chemistry lab at Arizona State University, where I eventually graduated from in 2018. Despite having a limited background in technology, Luke offered me the amazing opportunity to get involved with KVIKS this past summer. Like Chef Gusteau said in Pixar’s 2007 critically acclaimed movie Ratatouille, “anyone can cook.” By the same logic, anyone can strive in technology if they put their mind to it. Technology is not all about coding, computers, and broadcasting; Personally, I mainly assist with the production of these lovely Spotlight issues and overseeing students whose main interests are centered around graphic design. I am thankful to witness the growth of all the students that get involved with KVIKS and find great personal satisfaction being a part of such an innovative organization.
Kyle Miyashiro
I attended Hilo High from 2009-2013. I volunteered as a caretaker for 8 years through a family friend. While doing that a friend got me interested in computers which has led me to find a passion I never thought would develop into what it is today. I’ve made custom pc’s for family and friends, and have done custom water cooling loops for them too. I was a cook at an okazuya style restaurant for a few years and started volunteering with Hilo High’s tech department. I was hired after a few months and later became an esports coach for the school
Reynard Galdones

I am a graduate of Hilo High School class of 2011! If you ask the KVIKS Media members about me, they’d probably describe me as the quiet guy that has a desk by the door, or the guy that is into 3D printing, or maybe even the guy that loves Animal Crossing. Yes, I am all those things, but I’m also one of the Advisors for KVIKS Media! I first began my journey with KVIKS back in 2019 after I randomly saw Luke at Panda Express, where he suggested joining the Hilo High Tech Department after graduating college. Once I joined his team, I was quickly introduced to the KVIKS program where I learned many skills alongside the students. Fast-forward to today, I currently help advise the program with a focus on broadcasting and tech. In broadcasting, I assist the students with setting up equipment as well as providing transportation to events. In tech, I introduce students to Chromebook management skills and basic tech support skills for faculty and staff. KVIKS Media is an amazing program where students get to learn many skills that they can implement into their lives beyond high school, and I’m proud to be part of a program that offers these opportunities.
MEET THE KVIKS Media Advisors
Raleigh Gacayan
I am a graduate of the Hilo High School class of 2019. I discovered, joined, and participated in KVIKS during my Senior year. I was looped into a skit before I even joined. Thanks Remington. (Great guy by the way) I was invited to join after the recording. My first job or role in KVIKS was being the designated mic boy. I was the original Boomer on set. At first I wasn’t really interested in being in productions but soon found myself being a part of the Thundercats group which was in charge of making skits for announcements. I then worked part time during the following summer to assist with troubleshooting equipment around the school. Soon after my graduation in 2019 I found myself back at Hilo High School working as a VTECH and assisting with KVIKS activities.
Oly Ujano
I am a 1974 graduate of Hilo High School. Yes, I am a long time alumni and proud to work for my Alma Mater. I presently serve as the PCNC for Hilo High. Part of my responsibility is with the Communication Department which is a big part of KVIKS MEDIA. I was actually recruited by Luke, my son, who brought me out of retirement. My prior experience is working for 33 years as an electronic technician with the local Telecom and volunteering with installation and operation of AV Equipment for an organization. I am able to use that experience and expertise to help mentor and be an advisor to assist KVIKS MEDIA on their Production Crew. I see big things for those that are part of KVIKS MEDIA. Although much is behind the scenes, their work is being seen and appreciated around the world. It gives them life skills that they can take with them after high school. I am proud to have a part with that.
Hinano Naeole
I graduated in 2009 from Hilo High School. My interest in photography and videography started in college. I was able to put what I learned into practice when the Hilo High tech department took over KVIKS. Since then, I’ve been learning and honing my skills over the years; alongside my colleagues and students. I am very grateful for having the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people, and hope to continue going forward.
Jennifer Kamimura
Hey Vikings! My name is Jenny and I am a recent graduate of Hilo High, from the Class of 2020. I got my start with KVIKS during my freshman year when the morning bulletin was still being broadcasted LIVE! This was before Luke and the rest of the gang really elevated KVIKS to what it is today. As time went on, I enjoyed being an honorary anchor, creating funny and creative announcements and skits. I was involved in swimming, tennis, Key Club, and Student Association. Through all of these activities, I began to find my niche in the tech department designing infographics for any and every HHS event! KVIKS was the perfect place to start because I had the best mentors at my reach at any time. After graduation, I was fortunate enough to get hired as the Communication Specialist where I continue to create infographics for the school social media and website. I am currently attending college at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington where I continue to work remotely. The knowledge I’ve learned being involved in KVIKS has benefited me in a numerous amount of ways. The most recent being recently hired as a Social Media and Content Specialist for my college where I create Instagram and TikTok videos for our school’s page. I also create flyers and infographic posts for our dance team! After college, I hope to become a Senator or a Youtuber, whichever takes off first, but I know my new tech skills will benefit me in either endeavor I choose.

Da Advisas BY CLARA STEELE
Obviously, none of the work done by KVIKS Media could get done without the students who consistently participate in the program and always strive to make it better, but we also must appreciate the hard work of our advisors that makes this amazing program possible. Let’s see what the students of KVIKS Media have to say about some of these awesome advisors! Starting with Luke Eclipse-Ujano, our head advisor. Personally, I have a lot to say about Luke (all good things, all good things, I swear). First of all, his knowledge of everything that we do is so commendable, and his willingness to teach all of us kids and then have us be able to teach others is so valuable. Luke is so passionate about KVIKS, and wants to instill the same passion in all of us, which I think he really does, and does well.

K V I K S
I’m not the only one who thinks this, either. Erin Wagner, a sophomore in KVIKS Media, says that
“Luke is one of the most dedicated people I know, and he pours his soul into KVIKS. Whether it's through broadcasting or just putting up with us for the afternoon, he's given so much to the club and I hope to see KVIKS continue well into the future. It's such a wonderful club that exists all thanks to him, and we're so glad he decided to continue working with us.” Luke isn’t the only one who works hard for KVIKS. Reynard Galdones is another one of our advisors, and he works with the school on IT support, social media, as well as helping a while KVIKS Media specialties like broadcasting.
Reynard is super helpful to all of the KVIKS Media students, and, although he is quiet, when he gives insight it’s really helpful and good to hear! Reynard juggling his home life and work life, and still making time for KVIKS activities on weekends and breaks such as broadcasting is so commendable, and we’re all so grateful to have him.

Another relatively new advisor for KVIKS Media, Kyle Miyashiro, has helped us out with both A/V, and coaching our new League of Legends Esports team! Nga Hoang, a member of this team says that
Yet another advisor who helps make broadcasting possible is Hinano Naeole. Braysha Nobriga-Namihira, a junior in KVIKS Media, says that
“Kyle is a really cool and chill person. During esports, he always makes sure everyone is doing their best and helps us improve. He is very caring and makes sure that we are all taken care of.” Do you enjoy our spotlight magazine? Well, another one of our advisors, Darian Takase, helps make it possible! Darian is not only a beloved transitions and health teacher at Hilo High School, she is the advisor that helps make the KVIKS Spotlight happen! King James Mangoba, editor in chief of the KVIKS Spotlight, says that
“I love Ms. Darian! Ms. Darian is one of the teachers that many of the students love because of her welcoming and bright vibes. She has really helped us a lot in the making of the KVIKS Spotlight. She guides us and provides insightful feedback on how we can make it better. I’m really glad and grateful to have Ms. Darian as one of our advisors.”

“Hinano is a real help for KVIKS… he helps with the kids, the live streams, equipment, and more. More than a help, he is a good person who is always fun to have around. He gets along with everyone and is just an overall great person to have around.” So, we hope you can see how much the students of KVIKS Media really appreciate the work our advisors do for us and the club. Without them, KVIKS would not be able to happen and none of the students would have the same great knowledge and passion for digital media that they do now!

BY NATHAN RAGASA AND LUKE ECLIPSE-UJANO With the new Spring Season of Athletics upon us, KVIKS Media is reaching out to live stream Boys Volleyball, Softball, Baseball, and perhaps even Judo and Tennis. With our new partnership with Konawaena High School, we will start to organize more streams at that location. Since most of our broadcasting will take us off campus next season, we need a larger variety of students to make themselves available to attend a broadcast. Parents and Guardians can help too by volunteering to transport members and equipment or pick up food for our crews. McChicken Fund donations are of course, always welcomed to subsidize the cost of purchasing craft services during school and for feeding those who help with broadcasts. The McChicken Fund is a voluntary donation that heavily relies on the donation of students, as well as parents. Students who help after school are expected to work, having a supply of snacks and water on hand will ensure that no one has to work under the distraction of hunger. At times, the nature of our work extends even further into the evening, having a quick snack is crucial, especially when our attention demands us to stay on campus without the hope of leaving to pick up a meal. KVIKS Media is very appreciative of the kind donations our extended community has given to us! It has certainly helped with covering the cost of keeping our KVIKS Media crew fed and ready to keep on working.
