Aloha everyone! This past month, KVIKS media experienced a lot of firsts. This month’s issue of KVIKS Spotlight, titled “KVIKS on the road,” highlights the sports live streams beyond our Hilo High School campus. In fact, our first sports broadcast event of the year took our crew across the island from Konawaena High School, to the shores of Hilo Bay! We were also given many opportunities as a club to learn and experience new things. For example, the month of January marked the first-ever soccer and paddling broadcast events in the history of KVIKS Media. These activities have truly shown how our organization has expanded. However, it is not only our club that can expand; you can too by getting involved!
advisor's letter Darian Takase
What a month it has been! It has been such a gratifying experience to witness the adaptability and growth of our members first-hand as this month brought about challenges we have never faced before in the history of KVIKS. On top of our day-to-day club activities, our schedules have been bombarded with broadcasting events which also brings a plethora of new opportunities for our members. Parents, we are so grateful that you continue to support and allow your student to participate in KVIKS, as our delivery of communication services depends heavily upon them. If you are looking to get involved yourself, we can always use your help with transporting students and/or equipment. Students, despite the craziness of this past month, I am so proud of what you have accomplished. While KVIKS can provide all these opportunities for you, it is amazing to see how you respond by developing your skills in time management, flexibility, and confidence - especially while maintaining your grades and participating in other extracurricular activities. As we continue to work together, I want to remind you that there is a place for everyone in this inclusive club. Try new things! Ask questions! You never know what you might end up enjoying. While this past month has highlighted our activities “on the road,” remember, you always have a home here in KVIKS.

"Mahalo KVIKS Media leaders and volunteers for creating a safe, fun, and forward learning environment for our kids, our growing leaders of our community and world at large." Debbie R. (KVIKS Media Parent)
"KVIKS is amazing! I’ve had the opportunity over the years to watch and work with this talented group of individuals, and the proof is in the poi."
"I just wanted to say thank you. I work every Saturday and Micah A. (Local Media Producer) can't come to see my daughter paddle, but with the video that you provide, I get to be there. You do a great job. Thank you again!" "I just wanted to thank you and your team for always being Jessica S. (Community Member) out there on your own time to film the games for all of our athletes and families. I really appreciate the time you take to Aloha KVIKS Media Families, teach these students skills that they will definitely be able to use in a future career. We've enjoyed the commentary and reThese testimonies from members of the community watching the games." speak volumes of the work that is accomplished here. This month of January was when we pushed ourselves Jodie M. (HW Complex Resource Teacher) even further with the introduction of generator-powered, tent based broadcasting. All this would not have been possible without you, the students and their family for donating time, money and effort. January will mark the beginning of KVIKS eSports. For the first time since the Rocket League State Championship SNS Vikings Team in 2019, Hilo High School is once again participating in the HHSAA eSports League. We were invited by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, and encouraged by our Administrators to start up an eSports Team for Hilo High School. Due to the club nature of eSports, KVIKS Media Officers voted to incorporate eSports into KVIKS for both financial and administrative reasons. We are pleased to announce that we have one League of Legends Team (Wood Division), and Three Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Teams (OK VIKS, Three Stock Vikings, Side B) In total, 16 members of KVIKS Media are participating in one or more of these teams. We welcome the SIX new members who joined exclusively for eSports, and we hope that they work their hardest to compete!

January Recap by Erin Wagner
While we’re in KVIKS, we typically spend our time on the Hilo High School campus. However, January brought several new and interesting opportunities on the road! From a new sport down at Bayfront to an extravaganza of events on the opposite side of the island, KVIKS has seemingly been everywhere as of late.
The 18th of January was the first day to bring us out of the Hilo High gym and into the outdoors to create the first-ever KVIKS soccer live stream! Through the nervous excitement of not only a new location but also an entirely new sport, we found ourselves searching for the most successful system. After some experimentation, we figured out what worked best and continued on to produce a satisfying stream. About the event, Clara Steele, a freshman in KVIKS thought this: “I thought the first soccer live stream was super successful! Everyone performed super well, especially considering the fact that we had never done it before. Overall, I think it was a really great experience and we produced some great content.”
Several more soccer broadcasts would follow, including the games that led us to stream the full Konawaena Extravaganza!
06
On the morning of Saturday, January 22nd, several students arrived at school to start what would become a 14-hour broadcasting experience! Upon arriving at Konawaena High School, we prepared for a long day filled with both basketball and soccer streams. Soccer came first, and after setting up, we settled into streaming the next two games. However, as soon as the second game finished, we began a frantic and fast transition to the next location to stream the basketball games. Most equipment was already there, ready to be used or plugged in, but the cameras, as well as a few other items, still needed to be set up.

January Recap Despite such a quick change in location, Nathan Ragasa, a sophomore in KVIKS, said this:
"The location switch during the Konawaena Extravaganza wasn’t as stressful as it probably should have been as it was a long day, and most of the equipment was set up there so only another spool was needed."
Pressley Domingo, a junior of KVIKS, thought this about the event: “It was really epic. It was like a 'big field trip' kind of fun and also really rewarding when we successfully executed all 4 broadcasts that day; probably one of the most rewarding. We also went to the park and that was pretty neat.”
Even with how tiring it was, the Konawaena Even with such a speedy switch, we were able to promptly adjust and once again, return home Extravaganza was nothing short of an exceedingly valuable and fulfilling experience. with the satisfaction of a successful stream.

January Recap Following these broadcasts would be another first for KVIKS, a canoe paddling stream! Another early Saturday morning, January 29th, would host the first KVIKS Canoe Racing stream down at Bayfront! While overcoming the strange and dramatically different location, we were able to produce a splendid stream. Reana Lagronio, a sophomore in KVIKS had this to say about her experience:
“Ah yes, KVIKS broadcasting but at the beach. I absolutely loved the canoe paddling broadcast. It was so calming, especially since we were at the beach. It was my first time as TD and I was extremely nervous, but I believe the stream was a success. Our crew was relaxed, and it was a great atmosphere. It was a new experience for all of us, and I was amazed at how well we pulled it off! We could’ve improved on some things, but we overall did great for our first time streaming at the beach.”
Along with our off-campus activities, we continued with the now nearly comfortable routine of basketball broadcasting from our Hilo High Gym. With all our recent travel, we look forward to whatever might come next, as well as to the spring season sports coming up in late February. We also hope to see more members get involved in the upcoming broadcasts. With all of January’s excitement, we can’t wait for all that’s to come. Overall, all of our off-campus broadcasts were largely successful, and we look forward to more opportunities to explore our island while providing for the community.

BrightSpot:
by Clara Steele The personnel and the crew It is no secret that KVIKS Media continues to grow and expand in both the number of students and the production quality of our work. This is evident in our ability to produce impressive live streams of sports we’ve never done before, such as paddling and soccer, as we’ve seen in the past month. So, as KVIKS becomes bigger and busier than ever before, it has become ever more important to be organized with the scheduling of students, as this ensures the success of our club and makes us able to produce such amazing content consistently. This is why KVIKS has prioritized its personnel department, and continues to add more members to perform a very valuable service for this club. To sum up the work of the personnel department, they are responsible for assigning all KVIKS shifts, from the morning bulletin, to broadcasts, to lunchtime rallies. Personnel is also responsible for reminding people to confirm these shifts. It sounds relatively easy, but as a personnel officer myself, I would definitely call it a thankless job as people don’t respond or ever confirm their shifts. Please respect your personnel officers and respond to them!

Despite the difficulties that come with the job, growth in this department allows for KVIKS to perform its very important duties, so it is well worth it to all involved. Erin Wagner, a seasoned personnel officer said,
“The personnel department has definitely become a much bigger part of KVIKS; I left that job for a while, but returning to the department now and seeing how much it’s grown has been an inspiring experience. With all of the new members, the personnel department has truly become one of the key factors in keeping KVIKS organized, and we’re doing our best to continually improve ourselves while helping others in the club contribute in the best ways they can.” So, the next time you get a text or DM from a personnel officer, remember the brightspot they represent in the KVIKS community and how scheduling, and personnel as a whole, helps our club, and in turn, our community.

get involved
By Nathan Ragasa and Luke Eclipse-Ujano
With the new Spring Season of Athletics upon us, KVIKS Media is reaching out to live stream Boys Volleyball, Softball, Baseball and perhaps even Judo and Tennis. With our new partnership with Konawaena High School, and with their lack of having any sort of broadcasting, we will start to organize more streams at that location. Since most of our broadcasting will take us off campus next season, we need a larger variety of students to make themselves available to attend a broadcast. Parents and Guardians can help too by volunteering to transport members and equipment or pick up food for our crews.
McChicken Fund donations are of course, always welcomed to subsidize the cost of purchasing craft services during school and for feeding those who help with broadcasts. The McChicken Fund is a voluntary donation which heavily relies on the donation of students, as well as parents. Students who help after school are expected to work, having a supply of snacks and water on hand will ensure that no one has to work under the distraction of hunger. At times, the nature of our work extends even further into the evening, having a quick snack is crucial, especially when our attention demands us to stay on campus without the hope of leaving to pick up a meal. KVIKS Media is very appreciative of the kind donations our extended community has given to us! It has certainly helped with covering the cost of keeping our KVIKS Media crew fed and ready to keep on working.
